In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with McKenna Peplinski, a senior research associate at Resources for the Future, about delays in building up the infrastructure that delivers electricity to the United States. Many electric power projects, such as bids for new generators and transmission lines, are waiting in long queues to connect to the grid. In a recent study she coauthored, Peplinski examines the consequences of these delays in building out power infrastructure by comparing two scenarios that the research team modeled: one in which projects move forward on schedule, and another in which projects get stalled. She shares the research findings, which reveal that these delays have negative consequences for energy costs, emissions from power plants, public health, and the feasibility of adding renewable energy sources to the grid. What's the deal with the cease and desist letters going to Los Angeles pizzerias? Is OpenTable's comeback slowly killing Resy? And was our visit to the LA Times 2024 Restaurant of the Year a Chef's Kiss or a Big Miss? Today on The LA Food Podcast… What game is Norm Langer playing by reposting Rick Caruso's scathing video of Mayor Karen Bass' efforts (or lacktherof) to clean up MacArthur Park? Why is Martha Stewart irate over the way she's being portrayed in her brand new Netflix documentary “Martha?” And why is a trip Dan Tana's pretty much obligatory in your near future, dear listener? We're joined today by SF Gate's Karen Palmer to discuss all of the above. She's filling in for Father Sal and, dare I say, Father Sal watch out. If he keeps abusing his PTO days, Karen just made a case for why there might need to be a change in administration. Too soon? In Part 2 we're joined by Richard Pink of Pink's Hot Dogs. The Hollywood icon that is Pink's is celebrating its 85th birthday and is giving out 85 cent hot dogs to celebrate. I caught up with Richard at Pink's to hear about the promotion, but more importantly, to hear his reflections on the little hot dog stand that could. What does it mean to be a failure? Failing is typically seen as moving in the opposite direction of a specific goal, when in reality, most achievements in history were made possible by a series of non-successes. "The very concepts of success and failure are words that never really meant anything," says astronomer Michelle Thaller. She and others argue that successes and failures are inextricably linked, and that how we define them for ourselves is what matters. As Ethan Hawke, multidisciplinary filmmaker Karen Palmer, entrepreneurs Steve Case and Tim Ferriss, executive coach Alisa Cohn, and others explain, finding personal success means taking risks, being willing to fail, and recognizing when—and why—things are not working. "Most things will fail, but that doesn't mean you're a failure," Steve Case says. "That just means that idea failed. And what can you learn from that idea and then move forward." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRANSCRIPT: Do something where it's going to go bad. Where you know that ahead of time. 'Cause like what's the worst that can happen? You have to try a lot of things. Most things will fail, but that doesn't mean you're a failure. That just means that idea failed. And what can you learn from that idea? And then move forward. The very concepts of success and failure I think are words that never really meant anything. And actually, I strongly suspect they have a lot to do with privilege. MICHELLE THALLER: I often get questions from young students, and they say, well, how did you become a success? Or another great question these days is how did you overcome failure? And the funny thing is I found myself really kind of at a loss because the very concepts of success and failure I think are words that never really meant anything. And actually, I strongly suspect they have a lot to do with privilege. That if you can make yourself in the model of a research professor of 100 years ago, that's defined as a success. And if you do something different it's defined as a failure. There's never been any time in my life where, even after having received an award, or having been on a television show, I sat back and said, boy, I really feel like a success. It was always wrapped up in feelings of I should've done something differently, I should've had a different career path. There's never been a time where I felt like a success. And at the same time the idea that you ever really fail at something. There are plenty of times that, I very nearly failed differential equations in calculus, there were things that I was not very good at. But I eventually got them on, say, the third or fourth try. And the problem was just staying around and telling yourself that I really want to learn this, and I'm just not gonna leave until I do. There wasn't any really true failure either. It was always kind of twisted up with things I was proud of, that I was actually working through and trying to learn. So this idea that at some point in your life you're going to stop and feel like a success. Yes, I am successful now. I get very, very nervous when people ask me about that, about how did you become a success. I wanna sit them down and tell them all the things I screwed up, and all the things I did wrong, and all the reasons I'm not a success. And at the same time, when anybody calls me a failure, it's like, I wanna sit you down and explain why what I'm doing is actually getting your money and your funding for the rest of science. I'm not a failure either. Everything in life is gonna be a flow between those two things. Everything is gonna be a jumble of success and failure. Your personal life, your professional life, the way you feel about yourself. And it's a strange model we give young people. Try to be a success, try to overcome failure. All I can do is just kind of breathe and just realize that at no point in my life am I gonna separate those two. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In 1846, two years before Wisconsin achieved statehood, Pliny and Valeria Clark, along with their children, arrived in the Wisconsin Territory from Vermont and became some of the earliest settlers in the newly established Town of Montrose. Pliny purchased land from the US Government, including the present farm and much of what now comprises Paoli. In 1849, he brought the first Spanish Merino sheep to Wisconsin, followed by the first Morgan stallion in 1851. He built the enduring Italianate limestone house in 1853. After Valeria's death in 1899, one of the Clark children sold the farm to Frederick Gafke, who later passed it to his brother, William. William's daughter, Julia, and her husband, Wayne Palmer, bought the farm and moved their family into the historic house in 1928. The Palmers raised livestock and crops, with Les Palmer continuing the family tradition until health issues led to selling the dairy herd in 1988. Despite development pressures, the Palmer family wishes to maintain the farm, now planning to sell it to Prairieland Dairy, LLC, to continue its agricultural legacy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this week's episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Chiara Lo Prete, an associate professor of energy economics at Penn State University, about the design of electricity markets in the United States. Lo Prete discusses the differences among electricity markets in different regions of the country; efforts to ensure that electric utilities can meet demand for electricity under adverse conditions, such as extreme weather events; and new designs of electricity markets that aim to accommodate both growing demand for electricity and the further integration of renewable energy resources into the US electric grid. Kuya Lord's Chef Lord Maynard Llera took home this James Beard Award this week for Best Chef California, and we'd like to extend him and his whole staff a heartfelt LA Food Pod congratulations. Today's episode is all about awards. I'm joined by Father Sal to discuss LA' showing at the Beards, as well as some of the most interesting takeaways from the World's 50 Best, which was also announced since our last episode. We talk about what these awards tell us about the state of dining in 2024, whether we'd rather win a Beard Award or be named on the World's 50 Best and why, and which award recipients caught our eye and may warrant an LA Food Pod excursion in the future. We also discuss a fascinating Karen Palmer article in SF Gate on why Little Tokyo as we know it may be endangered, and finally, the earth-shaking news that competitive eating GOAT Joey Chestnut has been banned from the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Stick around to the end if you want to hear a true story about the time that I, your friendly neighborhood podcast host, won an eating competition of my own. It has been over a decade since we last spoke in-depth to the author and kung fu movie expert, Ric Meyers - the man responsible for introducing much of America to the classics of martial arts cinema over a writing career spanning five decades. His books - including 1985's 'Martial Arts Movies: From Bruce Lee to the Ninjas', 1995's 'The Encyclopedia of Martial Arts Movies', 2001's 'Great Martial Arts Movies: From Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan and More', and 2011's 'Films of Fury' project, which involved both a book and a documentary - are essential resources for any serious fan of kung fu cinema. Now aged 70, Ric shows no signs of slowing down. He is still offering his honest, forthright opinion on modern action movies - particularly in his role as a regular reviewer on the 'That Phat Samurai Guy' YouTube channel - and as the long-standing compere of the annual Kung Fu Extravaganza event at San Diego Comic-Con, which just celebrated its 26th anniversary. On this episode, Ben catches up with Ric on the kung fu movies he has enjoyed in the last decade since they last spoke, the future of the genre, and how his own martial arts journey is progressing. As a kung fu practitioner, Ric has developed a keen eye on authenticity in kung fu cinema, something he feels is distinctly lacking from the genre today - although he does recognise and celebrate the filmmakers still trying to convey a more accurate portrayal of kung fu practice on-screen, acknowledging the works of Jackie Chan and the director, Xu Haofeng.LINKSRic Meyers on IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1838515/Ric Meyers on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ric_MeyersRic Meyers on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ricmeyersRic Meyers on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ricmeyersRic Meyers on 'That Phat Samurai Guy' YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=that+phat+samurai+guy+ric+meyersBuy 'From Bruce Lee to the Ninjas: Martial Arts Movies' by Bill Palmer, Karen Palmer, Amy Harlib and Ric Meyers on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Bruce-Lee-Ninjas-Martial-Movies/dp/0806510099/Buy 'The Encyclopedia of Martial Arts Movies' by Bill Palmer, Karen Palmer and Ric Meyers on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Martial-Arts-Movies-ebook/dp/B00CG16G2W/Buy 'Great Martial Arts Movies: From Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan and More' by Ric Meyers on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Great-Martial-Arts-Movies-Citadel/dp/0806520264/Buy 'Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Book' by Ric Meyers on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Films-Fury-Kung-Movie-Book/dp/0979998948/Buy 'They Shouldn't Have Killed His Dog: The Complete Uncensored Ass-Kicking Oral History of John Wick, Gun Fu, and the New Age of Action' by Edward Gross and Mark A. She creates immersive film experiences that watch you back using artificial intelligence and facial recognition. Karen has been the opening keynote speaker at AT&T Shape Conference, MIT, Wired for Wonder Festival Australia, and TEDx Australia at the Sydney Opera House. She's exhibited around the world, including NYC Armoury Arts Week, Museum of Modern Art Peru, PHI Centre Montreal, and more. Her latest project is Consensus Gentium which had its world debut at SXSW this past March where Karen also won the SXSW 2023 Film & TV Jury Award in the XR Experience Category. Consensus Gentium is a powerful exploration of the implications of A.I. technology. Experienced on a mobile device, Consensus Gentium taps into the intimacy and authenticity of your smartphone features to create a realistic experience. Set in a near future, it is an emotionally responsive film that integrates cutting-edge facial detection and A.I. to transport audiences on a unique quest to discover what could happen if we succumb to unchecked surveillance. Karen and I first met at SXSW this past March and then saw each other again at Ars Electronica this September, and I couldn't be more excited to have her come from the future to speak to the Creativity Squared community. In this episode, you'll learn more about Karen and her latest project Consensus Gentium in addition to her social justice approach to her work that explores A.I. bias and unchecked surveillance. You'll understand why she sees it necessary to democratize A.I., how you can experience the future today through her “reality simulators,” and how she uses immersive art to make you conscious of your subconscious behavior. Energy economist Karen Palmer, renowned for her research on the nation's electric power sector, shared her insights on electricity regulation and deregulation, carbon pricing, and climate change policy in the latest episode of “Environmental Insights: Discussions on Policy and Practice from the Harvard Environmental Economics Program.” Read a transcript of the interview: https://www.belfercenter.org/sites/default/files/files/publication/karen-palmer-podcast-transcript.pdf
In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Resources for the Future (RFF) Research Associate Maya Domeshek and Senior Research Analyst Nicholas Roy about the Inflation Reduction Act and the emissions reductions that the law could achieve, according to projections from various energy models in an analysis they published recently in “Science” magazine. Domeshek and Roy discuss the projections; the law's potential costs, benefits, and effects on electricity prices; the differences among the models in their analysis; the caveats of economic models; and how decisionmakers can use the modeling results to improve policy. Food writer, editor and founder of Pain Pizza Karen Palmer joins the pod for a wide-ranging conversation on making a career in food writing, the joys of pizza, and why everyone should aspire to become a regular at their favorite restaurants. I'm a big fan of Karen's and her perspective on food (read: carbs) and I think this conversation will remind you to do (and eat) what you love. Father Sal also joins me for a far less enjoyable conversation reliving Top Chef Season 20. We allow him to revel in his Fantasy Top Chef victory, and we award the superlatives of the season. Consensus Gentium is took him the Grand Jury prize for SXSW Immersive 2023, and it's the most immersive phone-based experience that I've ever had. The Latin title translated means that “If everyone believes it, it must be true,” and it's a near-term speculative sci-fi piece that explores what China's social scoring system might look like in the context of the United States where mobility is restricted by algorithms but can be expanding if citizens agree to be surveilled by a phone app. The experience shifts automatically shifts between mobile app videos onboarding you into a surveillance state juxtaposed with Facetime calls where your face appears in the lower right corner, and text messages are seamlessly popping throughout the experience as you jump in between different tasks and cut scenes that build up the world and immerse you deeper into what director Karen Palmer describes as a “reality simulator” that feels entirely plausible near future. The piece is also tagged with the logline of “the film that watches you back” as it integrates facial tracking technologies and an eye gaze mechanic that allows you make a few conscious and unconscious choices throughout the piece. Some of the themes of the piece are around algorithmic bias in facial detection algorithms and how that impacts marginalized communities (and why the EU's AI Act bans facial detection in certain contexts like police enforcement). It also explores agency, self-determination, and biometric threats to freedom of thought as you are scored on a spectrum between how compliant you are to the state versus any deviant or resistant behaviors. Overall, using the multi-channel communication affordances of the phone is able to create an entirely plausible portal into this near-future world that Palmer is creating for us which I found deeply, deeply immersive. It's no wonder that this piece took home the top prize as the SXSW jurors seemed to agree with that sentiment, while this piece also presciently covers many relevant topics around AI, bias, and threats to our cognitive liberty — notably I spoke to Palmer on the same day that Nita Farahany's book officially released titled The Battle for Your Brain, which I had a chance to unpack with Farahany ahead of SXSW.
Charlie and Ted are back with tales from SXSW. In the news: Meta layoffs, Adept AI's massive round, JP Morgan Payments backed Tilia raises $22M for metaverse currency and the Apple XR launch. Our guests are Karen Palmer, producer, and director of “Consensus Gentium” a smartphone movie that won first place at SXSW for Best XR Experiences Cameron Kostopolous, whose VR experience “Body of Mine” won the special XR Jury Prize, and Roman Rappak of Miro Shot, which performed a sold out mixed reality concert in Austin.Thank you to our sponsor, Zappar!Don't forget to like, share, and follow for more! In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Casey Wichman, an assistant professor in the School of Economics at Georgia Tech and an RFF university fellow. Wichman and several coauthors recently published a working paper that uses a field experiment to estimate how smart thermostats and time-varying electricity pricing can help reduce household utility bills and demands on the power sector. As more and more of us install smart thermostats, Wichman discusses how much money these devices can help us save, how the devices affect the temperatures in our homes, and what smart thermostats might mean for the grid's reliability and environmental impact. People often see immersive technology as a way of entering new worlds to experience things that they would never normally get to do in real life. While there is certainly much out there to delight and entertain, immersive stories can also enable a glimpse into someone else's world or provoke new perspectives on social or political issues. This week we look at the issue-based work of two XR makers: Francesca Panetta, who led the Guardian's VR studio and more recently has been dabbling in deep fake technology; and Karen Palmer, whose body of recent immersive work deals with race, ethics and AI to challenge our own implicit biases. With Francesca Panetta and Karen PalmerFrancesca Panetta, Artist & Journalisthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/francesca-panetta-895b457/Karen Palmer, Artisthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/storytellerfromthefuture/Credits:Presenter: Shehani FernandoProducers: Chris Hogg & Shehani Fernando Assistant Producer: Max BowerExecutive Producer: Will SaundersEditing and sound design: John Wakefield & Matt McGuinnessThe title track is ‘A Thousand Years' by David A MolinaOther music: ‘Allston Night Owl' by Blue Dot Sessions courtesy of Free Music ArchiveAdditional music by Neil CullenClips from ‘In Event of Moon Disaster', courtesy of MIT Centre for Advanced Virtuality Clips from ‘6x9' and ‘Sea Prayer', Copyright Guardian News & Media Ltd 2020Clips from ‘Riot' courtesy of Karen Palmer.Resources: In Event of Moon Disaster - co-directed by Francesca Panetta & Halsey Bergund, an MIT Centre for Advanced Virtuality Productionhttps://moondisaster.org/6x9: A virtual experience of solitary confinement https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2016/apr/27/6x9-a-virtual-experience-of-solitary-confinementExperience all The Guardian's 360 contenthttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa_1MA_DEorE_Qwa-4uURxeOvRxYfqA-6Karen Palmerhttp://karenpalmer.uk/Thoughtworks Artshttps://thoughtworksarts.io/Immerse NewsCreative discussion of emerging non fiction storytelling (and great newsletter)https://immerse.news/MIT's Docubase of new forms of documentary storytellinghttps://docubase.mit.edu/VR Non-fiction - A Mediographyhttp://vrdocumentaryencounters.co.uk/vrmediography/Virtual Reality: Immersive Documentary Encounters research projecthttp://vrdocumentaryencounters.co.uk/Canny AIhttps://www.cannyai.com/Respeecher - Voice cloninghttps://www.respeecher.com/ Hosted on Acast.
