Today's 'Song To Chew' is INSPECTION. I wrote it with Penny Pefley, one of the pediatric nurses who helped us make our “In The Hospital"album. My buddy Bill Harley and I 'rap' this one. Our personal privacy is challenged regularly in a hospital by doctors, nurses and assistants who want to make sure we're okay. They even wake us up at night to make sure we're sleeping soundly! Today's kids are taught that it's their body and they can say "No!", but this all changes in the hospital. We can feel trapped, helpless, and angry as stranger after stranger invades our privacy. We want to honor a child's sense of self-worth by answering their questions and making safe space for their feelings to surface. They have a right to know what's happening to them. Some hospitals have child-life staff who support children when parents can't be there, to be sure the child receives age-appropriate explanations for things that are done. We never, ever tease, but enjoying a good laugh decreases stress and helps us get beyond some tough situations. Being in a hospital becomes easier if we remember we're all going through this together in the hope of returning to good health. I'm Peter Alsop. I'll be back soon with another ‘Song to Chew'. Recently I met up with Grammy-award-winning storyteller and family entertainer Bill Harley. We chat about the importance of rehearsing stories, of finding your voice, how to connect with an audience, and how to tap into your own personal experiences for poignant (and often funny!) stories to tell. Give it a listen and check out Bill's storytelling at www.billharley.com.
This time on The Children's Hour, we immerse ourselves in good vibes with a summer fun soundtrack. We've got brand new Kindie music and a classic Bill Harley story about the terror of the high dive and power of unrequited love. Be uplifted with us!
Our 'Song To Chew' today is WHILE I'M SLEEPING, written with Diane Gates. She and Penny Pefley are pediatric nurses from Seattle Children's Hospital who encouraged me to write and record our 'In The Hospital' album. I got my buddy Bill Harley to join us, and we won Parent's Choice 'Best Album'! This song addresses difficulties we face with going to sleep, particularly when we're in a hospital. We have fears about not being conscious or in control when we're asleep, and our strange surroundings and fears about our health compound these problems. What if we don't wake up? If a child has an operation that requires anesthesia the word "sleep" is the best way to explain this to them. Unfortunately, it's also used when we talk about death. It's confusing and scary to be told we'll get some "special medicine" that will put us to sleep, so it's important to be very clear about this 'kind of sleep'. We can help kids who have trouble sleeping in the hospital by continuing their home bedtime routines, giving them a small flashlight in bed and making sure they meet the primary doctors and nurses. Your child's physician may also have some suggestions. Best of all is to be there, and ask them what they think would help them feel safe. ~ Listen and subscribe to my Songs To Chew podcast = anywhere you get podcasts, or https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peter-alsop-s-songs-to-chew/id1446179156 ~ CAMPING WITH DADS = https://www.amazon.com/Camping-Dads-Peter-Alsop/dp/B08CS871QW/ref=sr_1_1 ~ www.FaceBook.com/WeLikePeterAlsop ~ www.Youtube.com/peteralsop = videos ~ www.Patreon.com/peteralsop = support my music & other artistic endeavors ~ www.peteralsop.com/music = CDs & downloads
Our SONG TO CHEW this week is PEACEFUL FEET, from my 'Grow It At Home' album. I wrote it as part of a challenge sent out from Rounder Kids Records asking some of the best artists in children's and family music to create a one-minute song for an album called "HEAR AND GONE IN 60 SECONDS" It included my friends Bill Harley, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Justin Roberts, Kim and Reggie Harris, Tom Paxton, Beethoven's Wig, Dan Crow, Dave Kinnoin, Parachute Express and Joanie Bartels, just to name a few! I wrote a song that was silly, but also had larger themes of world peace, and we'll talk about that process. Thanks for stopping by. I'll be back next week, with another ‘Song to Chew'! ~ Listen and subscribe to my Songs To Chew podcast = anywhere you get podcasts, or https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peter-alsop-s-songs-to-chew/id1446179156 ~ CAMPING WITH DADS = https://www.amazon.com/Camping-Dads-Peter-Alsop/dp/B08CS871QW/ref=sr_1_1 ~ www.FaceBook.com/WeLikePeterAlsop ~ www.Youtube.com/peteralsop = videos ~ www.Patreon.com/peteralsop = support my music & other artistic endeavors ~ www.peteralsop.com/music = CDs & downloads
My SAMIT AND THE DRAGON song comes from our “In The Hospital" album, recorded with my buddy Bill Harley and the two pediatric nurses from Seattle Children's Hospital who instigated the whole project, Diane Gates and Penny Pefley. We won the Best Children's Album of the Year Award from the National Assn of Independent Record Distributors in 1983! Doctors and nurses in pediatric hospitals still use it to help kids and families. It was new back then, but today, many traditional medical professionals use visualization techniques to help patients support their own internal healing processes. It helps them relax and become part of the team of people who work to make them healthier. Children are very receptive to mental imaging or visualizing stories as it's something we do naturally while we listen to stories, or daydream. And it's not just for kids. Adults who run businesses, parents, other-abled people and elderly folks use imagery to help change some of the negative stories we carry within us, so more positive outcomes can surface. Our Song To Chew this week, 'IF IT DOESN'T HAVE ME' was written by my buddy Bill Harley. It's from our “In The Hospital" album that helps kids understand more about hospitals and doctors and nurses, and builds compassion for other kids and people who have medical difficulties. The original inspiration for this project came from two wonderful pediatric nurses, Diane Grimm Gates and Penny Pefley. They suggested a number of topics that would make great songs. We got together with Bill and together won the 1989 Parent's Choice Award for Best Children's Recording of the Year! When a child has to be away from familiar places and people in their lives it's hard on them. The younger a child is, the more painful the separation from parents, family, and home. The feelings generated by this experience can develop into a sense of loneliness, isolation, depression and sometimes, "problem behaviors" such as refusal to eat, difficulty sleeping, or being uncooperative. Kids need to know they're important to others and that they're missed, but not forgotten when they're not there. This album has helped tens of thousands of children and families over the last 34 years. If you have any ideas about more funding to help get this album into more hospitals and into the hands of kids and families who need it, please get in touch with me at peter@peteralsop.com. I'll be back next week with another ‘Song to Chew'. This time on The Children's Hour, get spooked out with us as we celebrate kids' favorite holiday: Halloween! We've got spooky ghost stories from Bill Harley, Katherine Dines, AJ, and Show Mo and the Monkey Bunch.
Today our SONG TO CHEW is called A FRIEND LIKE ME, from my 'In The Hospital' album. The idea came from two nurses at Seattle Children's Hospital, Diane Grimm Gates and Penny Pefley. I asked my buddy Bill Harley to join us, and we won a Parent's Choice BEST CHILDREN'S ALBUM award that year. We included a booklet full of helpful notes about how the songs and stories help school-age kids and families who spend time in a hospital. I visit Bill, and we exaggerate some of our scary concerns by 'enlarging them' to be much bigger than possible. Our silliness minimizes the 'hospital fears', and the laughter creates a balance for the loss of control a child feels being away from home and school. The importance of a patient's affective state has only recently been recognized by traditional allopathic medicine as being a critical factor in people's ability to recover. This album has helped tens of thousands of children and families over the last 33 years. A BIG 'Thanks!' to Bill, Penny and Diane for their wonderful work , and thanks to you for listening! If you have any ideas about how we can get this album into more hospitals and to kids and families who need it, please get in touch with me. I'm Peter Alsop. How do you feel about failure? It's not something many people enjoy, yet it is something we all have to deal with. Absolutely everyone fails at something at some point. Maybe there are some people who don't ever seem to fail, but they definitely have moments you may not know about that are less successful. With all the failure in the world, we might start to think that things aren't looking too good. But is there another side to failure? What are the benefits to losing? As it turns out, failure is the way we learn. If you talk to successful people, they'll often describe their first attempts as being failures, but they learned and kept going. Feeling the occasional pain of failure allows us to appreciate fully the joy of success. Here on the Apple Seed we have put together a few stories that may not seem like successes at first, but things turned around with some new ideas and a little work. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Diffendaffer Taffy Cafe” by Laura K. It's time for a special episode of The Apple Seed, filled with stories for you and your family, celebrating the passing from one year to the next. And what a year this has been. We're looking forward to the hour with you. We'll think together about the unpredictable nature of a year's journey as we enjoy a story from Kevin Kling about riding the rails is search of great seafood. We'll acknowledge the difficulties of the year in a snatch of a story as old as 1889, written by Jerome K. Jerome. We'll think about the setting of goals and the making of resolutions as we hear the story of Kyle McDonald about his audacious adventure in trying to trade a single red paperclip for a house in Canada. We'll talk about the New Year's tune Auld Lang Syne, written by Bobby Burns and sung each year all over the English-speaking world to send the expiring year into the past. And we'll even have a little party with Bear and his animal friends in a story from Bill Harley. On today's episode, enjoy the following:"Train" by Kevin Kling (8:31)"Goodly Knights" by Jerome K. Jerome, performed by Sam Payne (2:48)"Red Paperclip" a conversation with Kyle MacDonald (13:22)"Come on Out and Play" by Bill Harley, performed live in The Apple Seed studio (12:08)"Auld Lang Syne" by Stewart Foster (3:33)
We all know that looks can be deceiving. Not everyone or everything is exactly as it seems to our first judgment. Many times, small things can have large effects. For example, tiny bacteria are so small that we can't even see them, but they help us digest our food, break down garbage, and keep the world clean. We don't notice they're there, but if they were gone, we would know it. So, big things can have big effects, but you should never underestimate something small. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Most Powerful Being in the World” by Antonio Rocha from Cross Roads: Stories from Brazil & the World (12:07)Antonio Rocha (pronounced haw-sha) is originally from Brazil. He came to the United States to study mime with mime master Tony Montanaro. Since then he has blended mime with verbal storytelling to enhance his tales. This story is about two proud rats. They are proud, not in a bad way, but of their daughter, and they want what's best for her. So, when it's time for her to get married, they want to find the most powerful being in the world to be her husband. Thus begins their quest, traveling all around, to find the most powerful being to be their daughter's husband. “What is Strength?” by Len Cabral from It's How You Say It (5:15)Len Cabral descends from Cape Verde, a country located off the coast of Africa. Since 1976 he has been telling stories and has garnered international acclaim. He tells stories from Africa, the Caribbean, Cape Verde, and the rest of the world, including his own original tales. This one is about a contest. In order to find out who is the strongest, the animals hold a competition. All the animals are there, and many of them are very strong. But when the human takes a turn, the animals have to ask, is that really strength? Or is it something far more sinister. “The View from Here” by Allison Downey from Allison Downey: a Selection of Stories and Songs (5:56)Allison Downey has lived and traveled all over the world, collecting a rich variety of stories. Recently, she has been recovering from treatment for a rare form of cancer, which she talks about on her blog. She says, in her own words, “...as I'm returning to the stage...I really come with a renewed strength of spirit and a deeper vision and voice.” This story details the events of an outdoor adventure she had as a fifteen year old when she found herself at a camp in Wyoming. The group she is with goes rock climbing and she has to learn a few things in order to succeed after getting stuck on a cliff face. “Lost in the Ooze” by Ted Fink from The Flight of the Spielkamrad & Lost in the Ooze (6:09)It's probably safe to say that most of us have learned about the dangers of addiction. And addiction can happen with a lot of things, not just illegal drugs. But sometimes we can use a reminder to be careful of things that make us forget about things that should be important. Ted Fink started writing poetry when he was just five. From there, his writing grew to encompass stories, music and other things. His tale “Lost in the Ooze” was designed to help listeners understand the perils of addiction and why it can be harmful. “Bellybuttons” by Bill Harley from The Town Around the Bend (5:10)When Bill Harley was young, he wanted to become the second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Instead, he became a storyteller and songsmith, and a good one at that. In his collection The Town Around the Bend, he tells tales about a town with the peculiar name of Around the Bend. Lots of peculiar things happened there, and in this story, he tells about a belly button mix up. In it, you'll learn just what the point of a belly button is, and what happens when you don't have one. “Sundays on Walker's Bend” by Bruce Walker from Good for your Soul (8:25)Bruce Walker says of himself “I am a husband, father, grandfather, minister, entrepreneur, teacher, performer, and pretty nice guy.” That list is certainly respectable, and his stories are more than respectable as well. He was Born in Oklahoma City but moved to Alabama and has lived there ever since. In this story he tells about growing up with his family on Walker's Bend.
Happy Thanksgiving from The Apple Seed! Wherever you're gathering this year we hope you'll take an opportunity to not only give thanks for the blessings in your life, but that you'll also share memories with or about the people that you love. And we'll provide the stories to help spark those memories. So put together a plate of turkey, yeast rolls, pumpkin pie, and an etrog, and get ready for stories from Bruce Walker, Bill Harley, Linda Goodman, Kevin Kling, and Martha Hamilton. On today's episode, enjoy the following:"Pie Made of Pumpkin" by Bruce Walker from Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts (3:57) If you're looking to bake your favorite pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving but can't track down the recipe card, here's what you do: just memorize this song from Bruce Walker which is basically step-by-step directions on how to make this festive dessert. "Yeast Rolls" by Bill Harley from Nothing For Granted (9:27)We're going to move from that food song to a food story from Apple Seed-favorite, Bill Harley. Have you ever been guilty of eating too much of a beloved side dish? How about the entire side dish? No judgment here, especially if it's something as good as yeast rolls. "I Need An Etrog" by Linda Goodman from Pass It On: A Journey Through the Jewish Holidays in Story and Song (8:31)If you were to ask someone 'What does Thanksgiving mean to you?', they might mention something about the food. But really at the heart of this holiday is gathering, being together with people you love. That will certainly ring true with this next story. And although it's not about Thanksgiving (it takes place during the Jewish holiday of Sukkoth) the elements are the same. Sometimes we focus too much on securing particular food items for our feast that we lose sight of what's really important. "Harvest" by Kevin Kling from Wonderlure! (6:20)What starts out as a humurous story about young Kevin Kling's reluctance to slaughter pigs that he's named turns into a rather sweet memory of Kevin's grandmother. "Why Anansi Has a Small Waist" by Martha Hamilton (with Mitch Weiss) from Stories in My Pocket Tales Kids Can Tell (3:15)Ever wonder why spiders have small waists? You're going to find out in this story about Anansi, the 'Trickster', who, when she doesn't receive an invitation to either of the local village's harvest festivals, devises a plan to find out when and where they will occur, that also includes attending both.
