In “Sharing the Farm Story”, National Peanut Board co-hosts Lauren Highfill Williams and Ashton Pellom takes listeners on a thrilling ride into the realities of farming, debunking food myths, discussing sustainability, and exploring what keeps farmers passionate about their work.  Featuring insights from Tara Vander Dussen, Randy the Peanut Farmer, and Abram Martens, this episode is a powerful reminder that the food we enjoy every day comes from hardworking individuals who care deeply about their land, crops, and communities.  Social media has made food trends more accessible than ever, but with that accessibility comes a wave of misinformation. Dairy farmer and agricultural advocate Tara Vander Dussen has seen firsthand how viral food influencers can create confusion about what's actually in our food and more importantly, how it's produced.    Tara's mission? To clear the air. She believes that when consumers understand where their food comes from and how it's produced, they feel more confident in their choices. Instead of listening to misleading claims, she encourages people to turn to real farmers for answers.  For Tara, farming isn't just a profession, it's her way of life. Living just steps from her dairy barn, she shared how her daily routine remains consistent, year-round, to keep her animals healthy and well cared for.  Her story is a testament to the deep connection farmers have with their work, there's no separation between their livelihood and their personal lives. The commitment to caring for their animals and land is a 24/7 responsibility, not just a job they clock into.  Switching gears to peanut farming, Randy the Peanut Farmer reminded us that agriculture isn't just about growing food, it's about preserving a way of life and inspiring the next generation. But with the average age of farmers creeping higher, there's growing concern about who will take up the mantle.  But despite the challenges, Randy remains hopeful. He believes social media can play a role in making farming look fun and inspiring future generations to consider agriculture as a career.  While passion keeps farmers going, sustainability is what will keep agriculture thriving for future generations. Abram Martens, a peanut farmer with a strong focus on soil health and conservation, emphasized the importance of taking care of the land.  Abram highlighted the ways peanut farmers are using new technologies and conservation techniques to improve efficiency while reducing their environmental impact.  This episode is a powerful reminder that agriculture is more than just an industry, it's a deeply personal, passionate, and evolving field. Whether it's Tara fighting food misinformation, Randy encouraging young people to farm, or Abram leading the charge in sustainability, one thing is clear: farmers are committed to feeding the world while preserving the land for future generations.  So the next time you pick up a jar of peanut butter or pour a glass of milk, remember the stories behind your food. And if you're curious about how it all comes together, don't believe everything you see on social media, ask a farmer instead! Catch the full episode of The Peanut Podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts!

In this enlightening episode of the National Peanut Board's The Peanut Podcast, hosts Ashton Pellom and Lauren Highfill Williams explore the cutting-edge intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and agriculture, with a particular focus on how AI could impact the peanut industry. Joining them are two experts in the field: Alina Piddubna, Delivery Director at Intellis, and Dr. Simer Virk, Associate Professor at Auburn University, who share real-world insights into AI's potential to effect farming practices.Alina sets the stage by demystifying AI, emphasizing its practical applications over the "magic" many associate with it. “AI is about empowering farmers to make data-driven decisions,” she explains, citing examples like personalized crop recommendations and IoT sensors that track soil and moisture conditions. These tools, Alina says, help reduce losses and increase yields by providing actionable insights tailored to specific farms. Her message is clear: the key to AI's success lies in building trust and infrastructure to make these technologies accessible.Dr. Simer Virk complements Alina's insights with hands-on examples of AI applications in precision agriculture. One standout? A mobile app called Weed ID, which uses AI to identify weeds through your phone's camera. “It's like having a personal plant detective in your pocket,” Simer quips, adding that similar technologies could one day be adapted to peanut farming. He also highlights projects like using drones for targeted spraying and developing systems to reduce peanut harvesting losses. The episode also dives into the challenges of implementing AI in agriculture, from navigating strict regulations to overcoming farmers' hesitancy to adopt new technologies. Both guests stress the importance of experimentation, urging farmers to start small and see the benefits firsthand. “Big hugs to those brave enough to experiment with modern technology,” says Alina, encouraging listeners to take the leap into innovation. With its blend of expert insights and practical advice, this episode is a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of agriculture. Whether you're a farmer, tech enthusiastor peanut aficionado, The Peanut Podcast offers a fascinating glimpse into how AI is reshaping the fields—one byte (or bite!) at a time.

Scientists work every day to unlock more value in the staples we've relied upon for literally hundreds of years. We get better, more nutritious food and innovative new uses that meet real market needs, and we get smarter consumers to boot. Our food system does more than ever before to provide a steady stream of information so we can all make better, smarter food decisions.  None of that happens by chance. It takes money and lots of it. It takes work by thousands of researchers all pointed toward finding answers to some of the toughest issues we still wrestle with in our food system. It takes a concerted effort to get the word out to people. But who's in charge of this endeavor? Not the government, not fancy think tanks, not big business or big universities. All those folks play a role in important roles, but we often overlook what hardworking, financially-challenged farmers who drive research and better consumer understanding of our food.  In this episode of Digging In, we're turning to the peanut industry to provide a stellar example of these organizations that work on behalf of its farmers. The National Peanut Board, a research, marketing and promotion organization for peanut farmers in the U.S., is headed up by Bob Parker, current CEO; and Ryan Lepicier, current Chief Marketing Officer and next CEO. Together, Bob & Ryan have worked for more than a dozen years to turn the commitment of peanut producers across the United States into something really, really important to the interests of consumers everywhere. Here's who we're speaking with in this episode: Bob Parker joined the National Peanut Board, a farmer-funded research, marketing and promotion organization based in Atlanta, Georgia, as its president and CEO in 2012. At the National Peanut Board, he has focused on the mission of improving the economic condition of America's peanut farmers and their families. Those efforts have centered around promoting the increased consumption of U.S.-grown peanuts domestically and internationally, addressing barriers to consumption such as peanut allergy and supporting production research to make peanut farmers more productive, efficient and sustainable.  The 2023 peanut crop is the 47th of Parker's professional career, although he has been around peanuts his entire life. He has a broad range of experience in peanuts and agriculture, both domestically and internationally, from growing, processing, public policy and marketing. Parker is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in agricultural economics. Ryan Lepicier serves as senior vice president and chief marketing officer at the National Peanut Board with a passion for fueling peanut demand and consumption. He will begin his role as NPB president and CEO on January 1, 2024. He and his team are working to make peanuts the most relevant nut among millennial consumers by ensuring people are thinking about peanuts differently, talking about peanuts positively, engaging with peanuts more often, and buying more peanuts.   Lepicier has a bachelor's degree in journalism and communication from the University of Oregon and an MBA from Auburn University. He likes his peanut butter straight from the jar on a spoon. Crunchy, please.

There’s no evidence that withholding any allergen prevents food allergies, and the newly revised Dietary Guidelines for Americans reinforce that in order to reduce the risk of food allergies babies should be fed infant-safe potentially allergenic foods once they’ve eaten a few other complementary foods successfully – starting at around 6-months of age. This recommendation is particularly important when it comes to helping prevent peanut allergies.   Despite current research, recommendations and expert consensus, many families are still apprehensive. Yet, research shows that parents and caregivers are 47 percent more likely to introduce peanut products to their infant if it is recommended by their pediatrician or family doctor. Dietitians and other healthcare professionals have an opportunity to spread awareness of new evidence-based research in this area and help reduce parental stress around early infant feeding so that people are more likely to feed their babies in such a way that the likelihood of food allergies is reduced. Tune in to this episode with guest Sherry Coleman Collins, MS, RDN, to learn about: An overview of updated DGAs for infants/toddlers and pregnant women The top 5 takeaways for pregnancy and babies from the DGAs The top 8 food allergens Practical tips for introducing potentially allergenic foods and peanut foods in particular A new certification program for dietitians to learn more and follow the latest guidance on early peanut introduction This episode is sponsored by the National Peanut Board. In most recipes, the only difference is how they are dipped in chocolate. Buckeyes are only partially dipped in chocolate, leaving the peanut butter showing on the top. That way they look like the nuts from the buckeye tree. Peanut Butter Balls are traditionally covered in chocolate. Buckeyes (Peanut Butter Balls) Buckeyes, also known as Peanut Butter Balls have a smooth peanut butter center and are dipped in chocolate for a fun treat. PREP TIME 1 hour TOTAL TIME 3 hours Ingredients filling: 1 1/2 cups 12-ounce jar peanut butter 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened(1 cube) 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3 cups confectioners sugar chocolate shell: 9 ounces semisweet chocolate chips 3 tablespoons butter Instructions In a large bowl, mix together peanut butter, butter, and vanilla until completely smooth. One cup at a time, add powdered sugar. Start by mixing with a spoon and then mix with hands to form a thick dough. For the last cup of powdered sugar, be sure to add it slowly one heaping spoonful at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Shape tablespoon sized balls and roll them smooth in between your hands. Set on parchment lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for two hours for a freeze for at least 15 minutes. In a medium-sized bowl, combine chocolate and remaining butter and microwave at half power in one-minute increments, stirring each time, until everything has melted and is completely smooth. Dip each peanut butter ball in the chocolate. You make use one or two toothpicks to help and then just smooth over any holes the toothpick leaves in the ball. Return the dipped peanut butter balls back to the parchment lined sheet and allow to set. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze until you devour them. Tip: Dip the chilled peanut butter balls three-fourths of the way into the melted chocolate several times We suggest a Tupperware container. More On Buckeye Balls: Buckeye Balls are one of the best desserts because it combines two of the greatest flavors together: peanut butter and chocolate. Peanut butter buckeyes are about as simple as it gets. Just a few ingredients and clean hands create these tasty little no bake peanut butter balls that are great to set out during a holiday party or to include in a cookie tin. Did you know… The National Peanut Board estimates it takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter. That's approximately 45 peanuts per ounce of peanut butter. If your family buys peanut butter in that large 40-ounce mega-jars, each one of those jars takes a whopping 1,800 peanuts to make! That's your fun fact for the day! Again Why are they called Buckeye Balls? Named for their resemblance to the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree, the state tree of Ohio, this candy is particularly popular in Ohio and neighboring states. A Buckeye, for those who need explanation, looks somewhat like a bloated chestnut. A woman who married a rabid Ohio State fan in 1964, whose idea of fun was sitting in the rain and snow watching football games, was the person who created these no-bake peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate Another Buckeyes Balls Recipe Ingredients 12 oz (1 1/2 cups) creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 pound (4 cups) powdered sugar 16 ounces semisweet chocolate (you can use chocolate chips or y --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/roger-keyserling/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/roger-keyserling/support
