The best selling author of the Geek Girl series, Holly Smale, was diagnosed as autistic in 2021, at the age of 39. She said she felt relief that she now has an explanation for why she's felt she's never “fitted in”. She couldn't herself anywhere. She needed to see herself in a book, so she wouldn't feel so alone. Holly has now written her first adult fiction – the highly autobiographical, The Cassandra Complex. She joins Anita to explain why it's important to her that autism is represented in the media. Anita is joined by another one of the women on our Power List celebrating 30 women in sport. Manisha Tailor is the Assistant Head of Coaching at Championship club Queen's Park Rangers and is the first woman to hold such a position in men's professional football in England. The BAFTA-nominated documentary director Emma Cooper, joins Anita from Los Angeles. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Louise Corley
Imagine being 30 weeks pregnant, excited to start the family you have always dreamed of and then one day the glossy vale falls away and reality confronts you, “OMG, why did I think my life was so amazing?”. From broke to self-made multi-millionaire in 2 years, nothing makes you move faster than when you are in pain. Emma Cooper is a mum, wife, sister, property investor, AirBnb business owner and creator of the Pro-Planner. Having retired from network marketing, in September '22 she founded Entrepeneursity, an online membership platform that teaches others how to build multiple income streams and achieve their own dreams through entrepreneurship. So what did the journey to success look like? From scraping through school and having no confidence until she was 30 but “I don't really know why?”, to becoming more self aware when she was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. From learning valuable lessons as a police officer such as, “you can't reason with unreasonable people”, to a pivotal moment thinking, ‘that could have been me', when two female colleagues were shot and killed in her area. From humble upbringings and naivety around money, believing £5000 a month was “mega rich”, to shifting her money mindset and earning £100,000 a month through Network Marketing. From losing her business partner, best friend and sister to cancer aged 42 she shares,“when grief hits you, it changes everything”. “Life is too short” to be waiting for the ‘right time'.Emma's story demonstrates the possibility of the modern day, where ordinary people can create extraordinary wealth in years rather than decades. We hope you are INSPIRED.Listen to this episode if: If you want an online business, empire or side hustle but don't have the skills yet. If you had a late ADHD diagnosis. Episode 16 of the Sheffield Digital Podcast is out and features a conversation with Emma Cooper, co-curator of Playgrounds, a week-long free exhibition of interactive art for children and families. Emma has worked in Sheffield’s digital sector for many years, so we also talk to her about all sorts of other topics too. That includes finding a way to describe what we do, the new Sheffield Women in Tech group/meetup, and how children and young people interact with all things digital. Sadly, Mel was away for the recording, but me and Chris really enjoyed talking to Emma. If you’re part of or have an interest in Sheffield’s digital community, I think you will find plenty to think about and chew over. Fans of Jojo Moyes and Marian Keyes will love The Songs of Us by Emma Cooper, a charming, funny and heartbreaking novel of love, loss and what it means to be a family. If Melody hadn't run out of deicer that day, she would never have slipped and banged her head. She wouldn't be left with a condition that makes her sing when she's nervous. And she definitely wouldn't have belted out the Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' in assembly at her son's school. If Dev hadn't taken the kids to the zoo that day, then the accident wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have left Flynn and Rose without a dad. Or shattered the love of his life's heart. But if they hadn't seen the missing person report that day, they might never have taken the trip to Cornwall. And, in the last place they expected, discovered what it really means to be 'Us'. Channel 4 pioneered the use of The Rig with The Family. Since then the technology has spawned many series from 24 Hours in A&E to One Born Every Minute and it’s now pushing into new territories such as The Marines. After having changed the way that we view many traditional observational documentary spaces, The Rig itself is now transforming. First the more mobile mini-rig used in The Chicken Shop and Nightclub Toilet and now the Digital Rig. Channel 4 commissioned RAW to take The Rig a step further and reflect our digital life - the thoughts and feelings that are captured on mobile phones and computer screens, but which don’t necessarily feature in real world conversations and interactions. This gave rise to the ‘D-Rig’ which has been used to explore the connections and secret life of students and teens, effectively providing a whole different narrative and perspective on their lives. For 4 months the D-Rig captured every text, call, tweet and Facebook update of twelve students alongside traditional observational filming. This data was then used on screen to tell the complete story of the social network of students. In this session Dimitri Doganis and Emma Cooper discuss the vision for the D-Rig, the impact it had on the narrative (effectively providing two sets of rushes), the implications of using the data and the reaction of the contributors to seeing their digital lives.
"Never Gonna Be Bored" is by Adam and the Couch Potatoes. H. H. Monro (known as Saki) wrote "The Storyteller." The poet Horace wrote the Ars Poetica, which says (depending on your translation) that "poetry has two aims -- to instruct and to give delight." You can read a little bit about the history of children's literature at Random History. American Children's Literature and the Construction of Childhood is by Gail Schmunck Murray. Louisa May Alcott wrote a lot of stuff for children, including: * Little Women, followed by Good Wives (sometimes published as part of Little Women) * Little Men, followed by Jo's Boys * Eight Cousins * Rose in Bloom * An Old-Fashioned Girl, parts one and two "Lumberin' Bunny" is by Tom Smith. "It's Windy, Your Majesty" is by KidsCastUK. The American Library Association has an official Library Bill of Rights. They emphasize that parents should be involved in and will be held responsible for their children's reading. They also say that librarians should withhold from the parents as much information about the child's reading choices as possible: "Parents are responsible not only for the choices their minor children make concerning the selection of materials and the use of library facilities and resources, but also for communicating with their children about those choices. Librarians should not breach a child’s confidentiality by giving out information readily available to the parent from the child directly. Libraries should take great care to limit the extenuating circumstances in which they will release such information. (ALA, "Questions and Answers on Privacy and Confidentiality." -- scroll down to the question, "Are privacy rights of minors the same as those of adults?") In case anyone is wondering if I know what I'm talking about regarding the ALA, I got my PhD in Library and Information Science. James R. Kincaid wrote Child-Loving: The Erotic Child and Victorian Culture, as well as Erotic Innocence: The Culture of Child Molesting. Anne Geddes takes photographs of babies dressed up or staged as if they were food or flowers, among other things. The purpose of the photographs is to make us think of the Geddes children as consumables, which we can buy a picture of and consume with our eyes over and over without having to deal with the complexities of babies in real life. It works a lot like porn. "I Wrote a Song About Allergies" is by Kyle Dine. Emma Cooper does the Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast. I'm involved with two writers groups affiliated with the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. "Now, That's Magic" is by KidsCastUK. All the music (and the KidsCastUK bits) were provided by Mevio.com.
