Jacqui MacPeake’s interest in food allergies became a particular passion when her own daughter began to struggle with multi food allergies and intolerances at the age of 14. Jacqui’s unique position as a professional caterer and a parent of someone who needs to pay particular attention to her choice of foods enables her to provide valuable advice and a personal insight into this particular field. Jacqui has also been awarded “Free From Hero Award 2018” for the work she has already undertaken to raise awareness of allergens in the University Sector. In this episode, Jacqui shares her personal story and how business can become more allergy aware and most importantly allergy safe.
Q: Our daughter was recently diagnosed with a nut allergy. My wife and I are used to eating a lot of nuts in our diet. We of course want to keep our daughter safe but wanted to find out could we keep nuts in our home or should get rid of them all? What should we do? Q: When you do an elimination diet is there a "delay" in your stomach getting better? It took me over a month off the foods for my joint pain to subside, but I am still getting stomach aches nearly every day, usually right after I eat. But it doesn't seem to matter much what I eat that I can tell, it happens after every meal of a reasonable size. I've been totally free of intolerant foods since early September...does it just take a while for the stomach to heal or am I missing something? Q: My son is allergic to all nuts, sesame and egg. We don’t eat “may contains” and we don’t have his allergens in the house. Is it wrong that I really miss eating eggs and nuts but I feel guilty whenever I do? Even if he is not around? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here. Q: Looking for some sauce ideas. I can’t have egg, dairy, gluten or high sugar. I’ve been using Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce to throw on meat but it’s too much sodium. Anything I could make or buy? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here. If you are interested in having 1-on-1 coaching, find out more on my Allergy Coaching page.
It’s not very often I get to talk to allergy Mum’s who are coming to the end of their journey. This week I am excited to introduce you to Sarah Chapman blogger and founder of The Allergy Matters Conference (inaugural year October 19th, 2018!!). Sarah walks me through her journey raising 2 allergy kids, one who has had their allergies since a baby and her daughter who developed allergies as a teenager. She has managed allergies including nuts, dairy, soya and Oral Allergy Syndrome. We talk about the road of discovery, diagnosis, raising the kids, eating out, being teenagers and now how they are managing their allergies on their own. Sarah talks about her experiences in hindsight, how to manage the anxiety, the difference between children being diagnosed in the 1990s and children being diagnosed now. We then go on to talk about the Allergy Matters Conference that Sarah is organising taking place in Runcorn, UK on October 19th 2018. There are a number of speakers including healthcare professionals and allergy organisations who will be there and we get a sneak peak at who will be there! Q: My son goes to a private daycare. They had decided to make the room peanut and tree nut free for him... until... another mom complained. Because, obviously, it's not fair to her child since she wants to send almond milk for her child as his protein. The director asked for a letter from our allergist explaining the need of being nut free. Even after receiving his letter saying my son needs to be in a nut free room, they've decided to allow them to send almond milk. Which, ironically, has less protein than the soy, coconut, or Lactaid milk I give my son! I'm ticked! What can I do? If you want to ask a question, send an email using the contact form here. In today’s episode I talk with podcast listener allergy Mum Jessica. Jessica is a mum to two allergy kids, her 2 year old daughter (nut and egg allergy) and 5 month old son (dairy free, and who joins us on the episode). Jessica has just finished her first year of being an allergy Mum and she tells me what its been like. She shares how some things have got easier and what she is concerned about for the future. Although this wasn’t originally a coaching call, towards the end of the episode I offer an alternative ways to think about having nuts in the house, I ask Jessica to talk about why she felt guilty for eating nuts even when she is away from her daughter, and offer a way to think about planning for the future. At the end of the episode Jessica shares what our chat has made her think about and what she’s learned from our chat. Katy is an allergy mum (and money blogger on katykicker.com) to a toddler who they discovered has FPIES. In today’s episode, Katy tells me all about the reality of living with FPIES on a day to day basis, the lack of information GPs hold, and how they often assume that when your child is just unwell. We also talk about managing your anxieties around your child’s allergy, when they are justified and perhaps when they are just you being a parent. Katy also talks about the symptoms her daughter has when she is reacting and how they can vary. We talk about educating family, friends and extended family too. What is FPIES? FPIES stands for Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome. It is a type of food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. What are the symptoms of FPIES? Symptoms include but are not limited to vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration which leads to lethargy. Children can often look pale or blue. Other symptoms can include low blood pressure, and blood tests that mimic infection which can look like sepsis or lead to sepsis like shock. All children are different and can have different symptoms. Q: My son is 3 and attends daycare. Occasionally people will bring in store bought cupcakes. This happened today and they called to ask if he could have them since it said the bakery used peanut products there. I told them no but in saying this what do you suggest I leave at daycare for my child in events like this? Any treat ideas I could leave there for him instead? Rebecca is a mum to two children (and two dogs) and blogs at Glutarama - life’s a drama but gluten free doesn’t have to be. In her family life she manages multiple autoimmune diseases of type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease, and autism. Rebecca is a woman I greatly respect for perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges and with such an amazing sense of humour. The symptoms in both her children were occurring at the same time. There was no history of auto-immune disease in the family. In today’s episode Rebecca gives an open and honest account of what life has been like starting with noticing symptoms in both her children, getting a diagnosis, changing their family lifestyle to manage these conditions, how to parent and how she keeps herself sane. I would like to say a special thank you to Rebecca for coming on the podcast and sharing her story in such an open way about the highs, the lows, the challenges and the wins! 2 Pieces of Advice to Parents: How You Can Keep on Track to Help Your Kids Keep organised & prepared (i.e. extra snacks, calling ahead if eating out, keep a checklist for what you ave to take with you, check out ‘escape routes’ or plan B/C/Ds) Communicate with your child so you can empower your child to take ownership of their decision Resources Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes Sign up for my FREE allergy 101 tutorial series Join the Eat Allergy Safe Facebook Group My new recipe book "Chocolate Treats: Decadent delights free from the top 14 allergens" on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk Leave a Review Thank you to all of you who have sent me feedback! Q: I had an unexpected close call this evening. We went out to dinner with a couple we just met. We all met at Denny's - as they have been awesome with us and my 16 month daughter's pn allergy. I always bring food from home for my girl just in case, and was explaining to the other couple about my girl's allergy and how severe it is, how we have to be so careful about foods prepped around peanuts and butter- you know the drill when you tell new people. Well we all go to order our food and this other lady orders PEANUT BUTTER PANCAKES. I can't even. It's got this peanut butter sauce all over it dripping everywhere. So I tell the waitress how my food needs to be cooked separately (because obviously) and was silently freaking out. I gave my husband THAT look and stared at this woman like, did she just not pay attention to what I just said? My daughter is ana to pn. I don't know how to handle these situations with people and do not have the ability to be diplomatic sometimes when I'm in freak out mode. What would you have done? (Note- to complicate- they had two young boys sharing food with mom, who were very eager to play with my girl and I wouldn't let them.) Allergy Mum Helena shares her relatively new but very involved journey in today’s episode. She talks about figuring out what what was making her children ill, her experiences at the doctors, adapting to an allergy safe lifestyle and mother’s guilt. Helena’s 3 small children (the twins are 4 years old, youngest is 2 years old) have between them environmental allergies, (potentially) asthma, and multiple food allergies (egg, dairy and soya). The twins were premature babies so that had its complications too. It was and still is a journey to maintain health and a full diagnosis, but Helena has grown so much. I ask Helena about how she dealt with the emotions and anxiety for her sick babies. What she looked out for, her instincts as a Mum and then how she communicated that to the doctors. 27:00 I offer some of my experiences as a grown up allergy kid on how to think differently about mother’s guilt. How, although your child has to be in and out of hospital, your child will probably have a different idea of it because their association is where they get better. As an adult we have so much more awareness of the world and the connotations of allergy and asthma management and the worse case scenario, but children getting involved, wanting to put together their spacer or take their medication themselves is just like wanting to push the button at the pedestrian crossing. They want to be involved in their world, they want to take ownership and be grown up. That’s a good thing when they have allergies. Top 3 Tips For Food Allergy Parents 1. Jess is writing an allergy cookbook and lifestyle guide and has launched a campaign on Kickstarter (ending Mon 18 June 2018!). Today she is on the podcast to tell me all about it; the history, the inspiration and how she needs your help to get it published! Jess calls herself a food allergy collector. Having grownup with a shellfish allergy as a kid she then developed more food allergies as an adult including corn, wheat, gluten, oats, soy and sesame. I ask Jess about her journey getting diagnosed the process she went through and how she finally figured out what was causing her symptoms. The lifestyle and cookbook started from a little note book Jess was keeping as she was trying to figure out how to make the foods she loved, before all her food allergies. In the last episode I was open and honest about where Eat Allergy Safe is right now and my efforts to keep it going. The solution is to make it a viable business both to keep the blog, podcast and me in house and home. What viable business could I make? Much of my time is spent answering questions via email and on social media so I thought the most sensible solution is to start personal consultations, a.k.a Allergy Coaching. In this podcast episode I talk all about Allergy Coaching: what is it, who's it for, why it would be useful to you, where it happens and how you can book in. I will charge by the hour at $60/£40. If you would like to book for a session, book a free 15 minute consultation and find out some more information, send me an email today.
If you're on my email list, you will have received this email last week. Although this wasn't comfortable for me to write or record, it's time I ask for help. Like most people, I choose not to openly discuss money issues. But I’m going to put that to one side because I think it’s more important to tell you the whole truth of my own finances and therefore the future of Eat Allergy Safe… Eat Allergy Safe Now I run Eat Allergy Safe out of my own pocket and have done so for the last 3 years. I have a few products I sell including Chocolate Truffles and my first recipe book Chocolate Treats. But the majority of content I do for free, including: Blog posts Podcast and video episodes Recipe posts Email list hints and tips Answering private messages asking for advice about allergy management (this takes a lot of time) Costs The truth is, book and truffle sales are enough to cover only a small portion of running Eat Allergy Safe. The rest of my expenses are covered by my freelance tutoring (for GCSE and a-level students) and from my savings. These costs include: Website hosting Podcast hosting Recording equipment Food for recipes My time, which I can’t spend on other money generating activities The Future of Eat Allergy Safe To keep this project going, as well as keep myself in house and home, I have to start changing the mix of free vs paid services I offer. The things I will keep doing for free are: Blog posts Podcast episodes Recipe posts Allergy Show talks What I Will Start Charging For Most of my time is spent answering people’s questions online or via email. I realise that this information is valuable, and after positive feedback a couple months ago, I have designed a consultation service, a.k.a Allergy Coaching $60 (or £40) per hour, which will be conducted by phone or online via Skype. Allergy Coaching can be 1-on-1 for you and your spouse, or family sessions. I think this is the most reasonable solution to keep Eat Allergy Safe and myself going. Without it I have to spend more time on other paying jobs and you would receive much less valuable information as a result. If $60 / £40 per hour is too much for you but you would still like to ask questions and get advice, please ‘reply’ to this email. I may set up a private paid group for those who want to pay less. In there you’d be able to ask questions online as long as you are subscribed. What My Boyfriend Said About This It has been really tough to write this email. (I tried 4 times before it was even semi coherent.) The idea of charging for something that I would happily give away for free is terrifying! And how do you put a price tag on it? When I came up with £40/$60, I told my other half and he said, “well that’s cheap, mines $150 p/hr!”. How You Can Help, Without Spending Anything If you are not in a position where you need allergy coaching please pass my information on to another parent who is in the first phase of dealing with an allergy diagnosis. Here’s the link you can forward: www.eatallergysafe.com/coaching Finally I really want Eat Allergy Safe to live on and become something that helps people every day. So that you don’t feel alone or helpless in the overwhelm of diagnosis, or feel guilty that your child has a food allergy but that you can give your child the life you dream for them. I feel the only way to make this happen is to turn Eat Allergy Safe into a viable business, and the larger it becomes the more people we can help who’ve just received the dreaded allergy diagnosis. Thank you for your understanding and for helping me take this idea forward. Nina Modak P.S. Today is the finale in our Allergy Kids Series. Over the months of September and October each week I have been talking to kids with food allergies about what they really think about having allergies and how they live with them everyday. These allergy kids range from as young as 4 years old all the way up to the grownup allergy kids. The aim of this series is to give you an insight into the thoughts, likes, dislikes, worries and celebrations of allergy kids and how it changes over the years. In the finale of the series I have invited on Allergy Mum Lusi to ask me questions. The cycle has come full circle now and that is something to celebrate! From our parents as our protectors, our educators and our advocators, now we allergy kids can start helping the new generation of allergy parents. I think this is such a wonderful circle because we can provide reassurance that allergy kids don't have to suffer or miss out. Instead we can learn to use our allergies to become better, more creative, more skilled and more compassionate people! A new project I am just dipping my toe into the water with is mentoring. I want to help newly diagnosed parents, allergy kids and allergy teens to be more confident. So, in this episode I invited Lusi to come on the podcast and have a recorded session where she can ask me any questions she likes. What does she want to know about living with allergies? What are her fears and worries for her daughter as she's growing up and how can she as a Mum help. Resources: Check out my mentoring page here and book your free 15 minute consultation. Over the months of September and October I will be publishing the Allergy Kids Mini Series. Each week I will be talking to kids with food allergies about what they really think about having allergies and how they live with them everyday. These allergy kids range from as young as 4 years old all the way up to the grownup allergy kids. The aim of this mini series is to give you an insight into the thoughts, likes, dislikes, worries and celebrations of allergy kids and how it changes over the years. Many times allergy parents can worry that their child with allergies will miss out and will have a worse quality to life, but I know this isn’t the case and these allergy kids will show you how they don’t miss out, they just do things differently. Enjoy! Today’s Grownup Allergy Kids: Amanda, grown up allergy kid with multiple severe food allergies (peanuts, tree nuts, legumes, dairy soya, chicken and some fruits) and her best friend Joella. In the penultimate episode of the Allergy Kids mini series we have reached our grown up allergy kids. For many kids, we are going to have our allergies for life. We are going to have to navigate the world and do all those normal things like school. But when you're at school, you're still living at home. You still have your parents hounding you with "have you got your medication with you?" "have you told your friends about your allergies?" "don't forget to ask about ingredients!" But what is life like with allergies, outside the home bubble? Nowadays, most teenagers head off to university, or college if you're in the US. You have to then meet all these new people and tell your brand new flatmates that you have life threatening. Amanda and Joella met at university, a time when they were "learning to adult." Amanda wasn't confident with her allergies. In the beginning she told her new housemates by leaving a note on the fridge with the list of things she was allergic to. She didn't want to feel a nuisance by telling people. Interestingly, Joella and Amanda's boyfriend wanted to know why Amanda didn't tell people, because it's kind of important. Click To Tweet and accepted it. - Amanda @EAFLifestyle" username="eatallergysafe"] To Joella, Amanda wasn't living in a way that means she was missing out. Joella forgets that she has allergies because her cooking is "amazing" and whenever they meet new people this is her introduction of Amanda. Joella describes how delicious the kitchen smelled when they were in university, Joella found it amazing and surprising that even though she had so many restrictions that she could make such delicious meals you would never guess where allergen free. Click To Tweet "no it's not sad!" - Joella @EAFLifestyle" username="eatallergysafe"] University gave them a birds eye view that having allergies is a who lifestyle and this is what brought Amanda and Joella to start Everyday Allergen Free. What are the challenges that adult and teens facing and how can we look at these challenges and make a positive place to address these issues. Allergy Kid Top Tips: Joella Top Best Friend Tips: Take that extra 10 minutes to think through how to be allergy safe Communicate about your allergy! Today's Guest: Laura Kenny WEBSITE: www.dairyfreekids.ie TWITTER: @dairyfreekids This week I talk to Laura Kenny allergy mum and blogger over at dairyfreekids.ie. She is an Ireland based blogger with two dairy free kids. Laura tells me all about her journey to figuring out her boys could not tolerate dairy, the difficulties she’s had and how she’s managed to persevere. What You'll Learn: Laura Kenny has two boys, 8 and 5 years old who are dairy free. Laura had quite a job getting to diagnosis. Her boys would be up crying in the night, have hard bloated stomachs and she just couldn’t figure out what was wrong. She went to the doctors hoping to get an answer and he eldest son went through testing. Laura’s youngest suffered from silent reflux as a baby, and it is was when she started bottle feeding her son that she suspected a milk allergy or intolerance in her youngest too. Laura and her family are based in Ireland. She tells me about the difficulty she had getting her boys diagnosed. In Ireland there doesn't seem to be a ‘milk ladder’ challenge like in the UK. Laura shares that a problem in Ireland is that there isn’t a system for diagnosis or at least a system in which patients can follow to figure out what may be an allergy. Nor to follow in monitoring a child’s progress, such as the ‘milk ladder.’ Once Laura figured out dairy was a problem for her boys, she had to start re-educating herself and her family. One of the things that Laura learned was where you can find milk and milk proteins in products, the usual like butter, milk and cheese and also the not so usual like ham slices. This was one of the most important things. Reading labels was daunting in the beginning but it got easier. Laura was not an avid cook in the beginning but she wanted to make sure her boys could always eat in their house. So she would look for dairy free alternatives but if she couldn’t find, she would make them herself. This became really usual when it came time to sending her boys to school. She would send in dairy free alternatives to make sure her boys didn't ever feel left out. A child must know about their allergies if they’re going to school.Click To Tweet We talk about the importance of communication. Communication is important for both explaining to the children about their allergies, telling the school/teachers/carers/family/friends and also for making sure your child can communicate about their allergies and just in case they have eaten something they are allergic to. I ask Laura also to talk about looking back in hindsight what she would do differently and what advice she has for other parents. For parents who knows their child is reacting to some food but doesn’t know what it is. Resources: Click to find out how you could win a copy of this book and a set of allergy free detergents! Today's Guest: Sunil Mistry WEBSITE: freefromdirect.com FACEBOOK: @FreeFromDirectStore This week I talk with Sunil Mistry, founder of freefromdirect.com a brand new online shopping website for allergy friendly products. Sunil talks me through how having an extreme eczema flare up meant that he couldn’t work and lead to the discovery of a range of food allergies. His process of discovery and recovery showed him that finding free from products was tricky for a first time allergy sufferer and this lead him to start his own online business. What You'll Learn: Sunil has had eczema, asthma, hay fever and grass pollen allergies since he was a kid. However this didn't stop him from being a normal kid who loved sports. He shares his experiences dealing with eczema flare ups after playing football and how he started swimming to help his fitness without affecting his environmental allergies. I ask Sunil to share with me how he discovered his allergies and how as an adult he had to start re-educating himself. His story began when he had to take time off work because his eczema got so bad if he moved his skin would split. The doctors did allergy testing to find out if food allergies could be the cause of his eczema. It turned out that Sunil was allergic to many of the top 14 allergens such as gluten and peanuts as well as other more rare ones such as mushroom, rice, peppers. The more I could educate myself, the more I could educate others.Click To Tweet Not only did Sunil have to re-educate himself, he had to start re-educating his family. He found that he had to control his food in order to figure what and how he could eat again. Sunil tells me about how educating himself was the biggest breakthrough to educating his family. Through his journey Sunil realised that finding products that were safe is still difficult. So he decided to do something about it. 6 months ago he started an online shopping website for people needing free from products. He wants people to be able to shop in ease and have products delivered directly to their door. This is when freefromdirect.com came into being. EAS 043: If I didn't take responsibility, no one would understand.Click To Tweet He is looking for help from you. Sunil is at the beginning of his journey and wants to make this a website that is useful for you. He asks please can you go and have a look at the website and leave a comment in the popup box of what products you would want to see on the site. As a thanks Sunil has a special offer for Eat Allergy Safe Podcast listeners. If you decide to buy anything, he has a discount code "EAS10" for you where you can receive 10% a £20 shop.
