You name it, Tyla Nathan-Wong has won it with the NZ Sevens team. World cups. Olmpic gold and silver. Commonwealth gold, and a bronze from Birmingham earlier in the week. But before being a famousrugby player, she was famous as a baby. In this short clip taken from the full conversation, we talk about that entire experience of being an Anne Geddes baby. If you have no idea who Anne Geddes is, google her name and click on some of her images. Her work was real famous in the 90's.
At 28 Tyla has won silver and gold Olympic medals, a Commonwealth games gold, 2 rugby sevens world cup titles AND she has twice been named NZ sevens player of the year. She was also a model for legendary photographer Anne Geddes as a baby, something we chat about in this conversation. I loved this podcast so much. Tyla is such an easy conversationalist and a real open book. I really hope you guys like this one as well. Cheers, Dom

10 of our tips to stay creative or to get out of a rut.1. Give yourself a time limit to complete a project.2. Get a good mentor. Not a ‘yes' mentor. 3. No star shots (Joking! - unless you really like them).4. Write a story about the photograph.5. Don't put too much stock in the industry, don't bend to all the norms. Make your own rules.6. Don't rest on your laurels, push push push!7. Try to avoid drinking your own bathwater too much.8. Try and show something that can't be seen.9. Don't be so hard on your stuff, you're most likely a lot better than you think you are, but read tip 7 :)10. Try and think about being creative.

When Amrita Samant decided to pursue her passion and take up maternity and child photography back in 2013, little did she realise she would help open up a whole new industry in India, paving the way for many more such photographers. Over the years, Amrita has done over 1400 shoots spread across different countries, won multiple international awards and scaled up to leading an all-women’s team. Through her photography, she has run campaigns to highlight the importance of breastmilk donation for babies in intensive care unit. From a portrait photographer to having grown to a family documentary photographer, Amrita has also shot for many personalities including actor Sameera Reddy and cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin. So what was it like to be among first movers in this industry and what does she want her work legacy to be? When the pandemic prevented world renowned photographer Anne Geddes from doing what she does, taking pictures of babies, she decided to do something else. She explains the "Joy" project to Jesse.
The Art Angle team is taking this week off for Thanksgiving, but we thought we'd share one of our favorite episodes from the past year to see you through this unconventional holiday weekend. Picture this: a doughy, apple-cheeked infant nestled in between the soft petals of a dew-kissed flower, sound asleep, like the start of a real-life fable. Almost everyone who conjures that mental image will do so using a nearly identical aesthetic—and whether you realize it or not, that’s almost entirely because of the work of legendary baby photographer Anne Geddes. After her debut photography book, Down in the Garden, soared to number three on the New York Times Bestseller list in 1996, Geddes’s wholesomely surreal infant images became inescapable. Oprah went on air to declare Down in the Garden the best coffee-table book she’d ever seen, and by late December 1997, Geddes’s publishing partners had sold more than 1.8 billion (yes, with a “b”) calendars and date books of her photography for the upcoming year. Her dizzying success soon spurred the artist to ramp up production, with a standard Geddes shoot requiring six-to-eight months of planning and a budget between $250,000 and $350,000. But who could blame her for going big? Geddes’s empire of adorable infants seemed unstoppable. Cut to 2020, however, and the picture has changed dramatically—not just for Geddes, but for an entire creative economy driven by analog photography, print publishing, and the high barriers to entry formerly associated with both. Years after smartphones first began putting increasingly high-quality cameras in nearly everyone’s pocket, and Instagram began providing masses of self-trained shutterbugs a free and wide-reaching distribution platform for their images, it’s not hyperbole to say that the pillars on which Geddes built her career have crumbled. So what’s the Queen of Baby Photography to do when her kingdom becomes unrecognizable? Back in May, Andrew Goldstein chatted with Noor Brara, Artnet’s art and design editor, about her recent profile of Geddes. Together, they discussed the artist’s rise, fall, and reckoning with culture’s digital evolution.

Picture this: a doughy, apple-cheeked infant nestled in between the soft petals of a dew-kissed flower, sound asleep, like the start of a real-life fable. Almost everyone who conjures that mental image will do so using a nearly identical aesthetic—and whether you realize it or not, that's almost entirely because of the work of legendary baby photographer Anne Geddes. After her debut photography book, Down in the Garden, soared to number three on the New York Times Bestseller list in 1996, Geddes's wholesomely surreal infant images became inescapable. Oprah went on air to declare Down in the Garden the best coffee-table book she'd ever seen, and by late December 1997, Geddes's publishing partners had sold more than 1.8 billion (yes, with a "b") calendars and date books of her photography for the upcoming year. Her dizzying success soon spurred the artist to ramp up production, with a standard Geddes shoot requiring six-to-eight months of planning and a budget between $250,000 and $350,000. But who could blame her for going big? Geddes's empire of adorable infants seemed unstoppable. Cut to 2020, however, and the picture has changed dramatically—not just for Geddes, but for an entire creative economy driven by analog photography, print publishing, and the high barriers to entry formerly associated with both. Years after smartphones first began putting increasingly high-quality cameras in nearly everyone's pocket, and Instagram began providing masses of self-trained shutterbugs a free and wide-reaching distribution platform for their images, it's not hyperbole to say that the pillars on which Geddes built her career have crumbled. So what's the Queen of Baby Photography to do when her kingdom becomes unrecognizable? In this week's episode, Andrew Goldstein chats with Noor Brara, Artnet's art and design editor, about her recent profile of Geddes. Together, they discuss the artist's rise, fall, and reckoning with culture's digital evolution.

Today's episode is all about Schmidt rants and hoping I don't ever get cancelled, but you know, I was always Corporate Schmidt, so I've been pretty locked down for years and not dumb, 15, and tweeting. I dive into my old tweets to see if there is anything I should be worried about---we shall see. Also, I've said it before and I will say it again, the only reason to have a baby is to have an Anne Geddes style photo shoot, so why aren't people doing this?!? I want to see your baby dressed up as a cabbage--DUH. Finally a Schmidt rant like no other--are people really washing their reusable Ziploc bags or throwing them out? Why are people choosing white bridesmaid dresses and who the hell is running Dolly Parton's social media and causing a stir with the #dollypartonchallenge? I'm thinking of starting a #9to5challenge, which would compare our Outlook head-shots, work from home, and finally what we look like at 9 am vs 5 pm (it ain't pretty folks). Okay, you ready? Let's go.Thanks for listening! Follow me on Instagram at @skschmidt or like my Facebook page "Sarah Talks Schmidt."

"Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Dad."~Anne Geddes Today is Father’s Day and the perfect time to express our love and gratitude to these special people in our lives. "It’s never too late to have a relationship with your father." Some questions we ask: When will you stop blaming yourself for mistakes and acknowledging them as learning experiences that you can learn and reflect from? (3:00) Is the intent behind a connection with a family member, significant other or friend perceived as pure with enjoyable experiences or beneficial with an underlying need? (5:00) How does your relationship with your parents change with time? (8:00) Are there things that you would ask your father that you have not had a chance to? (10:00) Do you regret not thanking or cherishing time with your father when you were younger? (13:00) Which traits, morals and values have you unknowingly inherited from your father? (17:00) How has your father made you proud and what has he sacrificed for you? (23:00) Would you be able to make the same sacrifices for your children that your father did? (26:00) In this episode, we reminisce on qualities, experiences and values that our fathers possess. What qualities of your dad do you share?

It is available on the XRX website and also on Amazon! We both really liked this book. The concept is simple: this book teaches you how to make a custom-fitting skirt and how to add an undergarment to give it structure. The patterns are sorted by construction: bottom up, top down and side to side. There really is something for everyone in the variety of designs. We didn't like some styles and we loved others. There are definitely some skirts that need a slender figure, but there were also plenty that would work on larger sizes. The fact that you customize your skirt makes it way more likely the end product will be flattering! This book is well written and includes a lot of great extras. There is a history of the skirt that we both really enjoyed reading. The photography is great and each pattern shows a lot of views of the skirt so you can see the garment as a whole but also see close-ups of important features. We love a book with plenty of good photos! It includes the usual features like a stitch guide and instructions, and the e-book also has hyperlinks to the patterns from the index, which is a another feature we both love. There's even a clever section explaining why you NEED a knit skirt, and providing a counterargument to all the reasons you don't think you want one. If you are interested in knitting a different kind of garment and learning how to make it your exact size, this is a great book for you. It is probably best suited to intermediate knitters and above, but an enthusiastic beginner could definitely tackle some of the patterns.Fiber EventsFiber Revival Aug 13, Spencer Peirce Little Farm, Newbury, MAFinger Lakes Fiber Festival Sep 17-18, Hemlock Fairgrounds, Hemlock MESouthern Adirondack Fiber Festival Sep 24-25, Washington County Fairgrounds, Greenwich, NYVermont Sheep and Wool Festival Oct 1-2, Tunbridge Fairgrounds, Tunbridge, VTNew York Sheep and Wool Oct 15-16, Dutchess County Fairgrounds, Rhinebeck, NYFiber Festival of New England Nov 5-6, Eastern States Exhibition, Springfield, MA

This is a great course if you want to take your knitting from following patterns as written (and always being a little disappointed by the outcome) to customizing everything about a project. Not only will this teach you how to customize an existing mitt pattern, but it will give you the skills to design your own pattern and to begin to learn how to customize everything that you knit. The class is packed with extras that can really help up your knitting game. For those who dread chart reading, there is a nice section on how to read charts to give you a leg up. There is also a great section on the color wheel and how to select colors that go well together. I think this is a key skill that everyone could use. You will also learn how to use knitter's graph paper (and where to source it), how to do the necessary math calculations for the project, and how to get inspired to create your own pattern motifs. As with all Craftsy classes, you will get downloadable class materials that you can refer to again and again while doing future projects. And Stephanie is there to answer any questions that you post on the class as you go along.I would not recommend this class for beginning knitters unless you are very adventurous. You will at least need to know stockinette, garter, knitting in the round, stranded colorwork, increases/decreases and chart reading (although you can learn about charts in the handy tutorial). At the end of this class you will have a perfectly fitting pair of mitts in colors you love with the design of your choice! And this could be the beginning of you modifying patterns to suit what YOU want instead of settling for what the designer likes. March of Dimes volunteer ambassador and world famous photographer Anne Geddes is featured in a PSA to raise awareness about preventing preterm birth and give more babies a healthy start in life.
It’s vital that you develop your own photographic style. When you’re an emerging photographer, you can spend a lot of time trying to create the “look” that your client wants (and that’s ok!). But you also need to devote time to creating and nurturing your own style. In this episode, Gina and Valerie discuss the steps you need to take in order to discover the signature style that you can call your own, whether that’s glamour, grit - or anything in between. Photographers like Herb Ritts, Annie Leibovitz, Richard Avedon and even Anne Geddes all have an iconic style that can be recognised anywhere. That can happen to you too. Have a listen to find out how! Hope you enjoy the podcast. Sign up to the newsletter for great tips and free Lightroom presets. "Never Gonna Be Bored" is by Adam and the Couch Potatoes. H. H. Monro (known as Saki) wrote "The Storyteller." The poet Horace wrote the Ars Poetica, which says (depending on your translation) that "poetry has two aims -- to instruct and to give delight." You can read a little bit about the history of children's literature at Random History. American Children's Literature and the Construction of Childhood is by Gail Schmunck Murray. Louisa May Alcott wrote a lot of stuff for children, including: * Little Women, followed by Good Wives (sometimes published as part of Little Women) * Little Men, followed by Jo's Boys * Eight Cousins * Rose in Bloom * An Old-Fashioned Girl, parts one and two "Lumberin' Bunny" is by Tom Smith. "It's Windy, Your Majesty" is by KidsCastUK. The American Library Association has an official Library Bill of Rights. They emphasize that parents should be involved in and will be held responsible for their children's reading. They also say that librarians should withhold from the parents as much information about the child's reading choices as possible: "Parents are responsible not only for the choices their minor children make concerning the selection of materials and the use of library facilities and resources, but also for communicating with their children about those choices. Librarians should not breach a child’s confidentiality by giving out information readily available to the parent from the child directly. Libraries should take great care to limit the extenuating circumstances in which they will release such information. (ALA, "Questions and Answers on Privacy and Confidentiality." -- scroll down to the question, "Are privacy rights of minors the same as those of adults?") In case anyone is wondering if I know what I'm talking about regarding the ALA, I got my PhD in Library and Information Science. James R. Kincaid wrote Child-Loving: The Erotic Child and Victorian Culture, as well as Erotic Innocence: The Culture of Child Molesting. Anne Geddes takes photographs of babies dressed up or staged as if they were food or flowers, among other things. The purpose of the photographs is to make us think of the Geddes children as consumables, which we can buy a picture of and consume with our eyes over and over without having to deal with the complexities of babies in real life. It works a lot like porn. "I Wrote a Song About Allergies" is by Kyle Dine. Emma Cooper does the Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast. I'm involved with two writers groups affiliated with the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. "Now, That's Magic" is by KidsCastUK. All the music (and the KidsCastUK bits) were provided by Mevio.com.
This week we were relieved to hear our mission team made it safely to New York with the hurricane bearing down on Jamaica. With Reverend Brown in and the group seeking ways to get out of New York, our own Reverend Joanne Lindstrom provides the sermon today. She talks to us about how it's not the big things the continue to pave the way for the Lord in the world but the little things we do everyday. The child helped with homework, the beggar who we give a quarter too, the single mother who we helped get the groceries home. Along with Joanne this week we have our own Anne Geddes providing the musical selections for this week. Thanks to everyone listening to our podcast. Please drop us a Note at fbcpreacher@fbcpreacher.com or submit your comments here on the web page about anything you might hear in this ministry. We enjoy hearing your comments about our ministry or anything you might think of to improve this ministry. Again thank you all for listening and have a blessed week from the pastoral and technical staff at First Baptist Church of Chicago.
