Olympic gold medallist Laura Kraut is one of the biggest names in US showjumping, having ridden for her country for more than two decades and achieved more than 100 grand prix wins. Laura won team gold in Beijing in 2008, team gold at the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon, USA and team silver at the World Equestrian Games at Aachen in 2006. She has also competed in eight World Cup Finals and on several Nation’s Cup teams. Her most famous horse was the quirky, but talented Cedric, who few other riders could conquer. However, Laura formed a very special bond with the horse, who is now happily retired. Laura divides her time between the USA and her home in the UK, which she shares with her partner and fellow Olympic gold medallist, Nick Skelton. We caught up with Laura at a competition to chat to her about her horses, her life and her hard-working attitude. The 54-year-old is still at the top of her game and in this interview she speaks frankly about how the love of her horses and her sport keeps her motivated. Laura also speaks about: · How her Charles Owen helmet saved her life when she fell off in a competition and the horse trampled on her head. · How hard she had to work to make it to the top – working as a groom and earning $10 for every mane she plaited. · Being selected for the Olympics as an unknown rider when she was 26 years old, and leaving the USA for the very first time. · Meeting her equestrian idols – and how they inspired her to take up showjumping as a career. · What made her Olympic gold medal-winning partner Cedric so special. · The amazing experience of winning gold at the World Equestrian Games in 2018 on home turf. · How showjumping has changed over the years. · How she got together with her partner of 14 years, Nick Skelton. · What makes Nick such an incredible horseman and the positive influence he has had on her riding. · How she has stayed at the top of her sport for so long – and the importance of a positive mental attitude. Olympic show jumper Laura Kraut’s four-decade career includes three appearances on both the U.S. Olympic team and the World Equestrian Games team. She has also competed in numerous World Cup Finals, has ridden in countless Nations Cups and has more than 100 grands prix wins. In 1991, Laura got the ride on her first big-time grand prix partner, Simba Run. After a year together, Laura and Simba earned a spot as alternates on the 1992 US Olympic team in Barcelona. Simba helped draw national attention and sponsorship to Laura’s career, opening the door to a string of partnerships with other talented horses, including Liberty, her partner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Anthem, Miss Independent, her partner at the 2006 WEG in Aachen, and Cedric—perhaps her most famous partner. When Cedric was only 10, he and Laura wowed the world by finishing the 2008 US Olympic selection trials with the best overall score—and then went on to win the team gold medal in Beijing. Most recently, Laura won a team gold medal at the 2018 World Equestrian Games with Zeremonie. Based in Florida for half the year and Great Britain for the other, Laura and her longtime partner, the legendary British show jumper Nick Skelton, run a successful training and teaching business. In this episode, Laura talks about how she gained experience in the sport and how those experiences shaped her into the rider she is today, the qualities she looks for in a show jumper (and some of her favorite horses), what she thinks makes a good horseman and more. Her upbringing in the north of England had given her a solid foundation of horsemanship through Pony Club and having the opportunity to work with Nick Skelton and Laura Kraut opened the door to riding good horses—including Big Star at his first show. For the past seven years from starting out with Andre Dignelli at Heritage Farm in New York learning all about the equitation and hunter jumper worlds, she moved to Becky & David Gochman’s Baxter Hill Farm where she is now the manager and trainer.
