In Episode 57 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield study up on another subscriber submission of the historical coupling between Supreme Court Justice Ruther Bader Ginsberg and her husband, Law Professor Martin Ginsberg. The two had a marriage that lasted 56 years.   We begin with Ruth's birth chart and see a Pisces Stellium, denoting a deeply empathetic and compassionate person. And with an opposing Virgo stellium, she had a keen eye and execution style, allowing her to make her ideals come to life. Coupled with a Venus/Moon trine, she was always going to be in favor of women's rights and the female experience.    Next, we peer into Martin's chart and find a witty and intellectual Gemini Sun and Mercury conjunction. This fits his professor title for sure, but that's not all he was. His Venus/Pluto combo in Cancer and Mars in Taurus, also tells us he was quite comfortable with domestic duties and was able to lean into that power for himself. A Neptune/Moon connection also tells us of a highly sensitive side.   Together, we first have pause at a Gemini/Pisces Sun square between them. Martin's realism and Ruths idealism might have clashed. But a Venus trine tells us their love language ran deep and mutual Mercury/Saturn connections created a strong commitment to find common ground. On this week's episode, I am speaking with Will Ingraham, a partner at GDC Properties. Back in my Massey Knakal days we sold Will's company a loft conversion in Brooklyn. I have stayed in touch and have guest lectured for him at Fordham University where he teaches a class on affordable housing. I love how Will is a big picture thinker. When I asked if his knowledge base was his Insider's Edge, he said it was quite the opposite. He said as a generalist his value is knowing who to bring into complex situations whether for entitling land or figuring out how to capitalize affordable development. Will recounts his early days as a house painter in Manhattan, when he stumbled across a development opportunity. As he had followed real estate from an early age, he was able to assemble the site and essentially flip the contract to score a big profit  launching him into the real estate business. He then went on to spec homes in Milford, NY where he ultimately met Martin Ginsburg a founder of GDC properties.  They were not only the largest developer in Westchester, NY but went on to amass 3 million SF of shopping centers nationwide, as well as developing hotel projects. Will's past roles at the company include president and chief investment officer. He has been responsible for developing and implementing the company's strategic vision, overseeing acquisitions and dispositions of property and leading new development activity. Mr. Ingraham is also managing member in the Peregrine Opportunity Zone fund. He holds a master of science degree in real estate development from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. I know you will get a lot out of this episode especially the students out there. Will's advice is to learn a hard skill so you can add value. He is also a big believer in being a problem solver.

State of the Arts Episode 71 just published! One Martine Gallery is a contemporary and pop art gallery that recently sprung up in the rapidly developing city of White Plains, New York. This week's guest is none other than the curator of One Martine Gallery, Walker Manzke. For over a decade, White Plains has been growing into a bustling metropolis. An elegant office building stood vacant at the end of Martine Avenue for a while. A building that Walker Manzke's business partner, real estate developer Martin Ginsburg, eventually converted into luxury apartments. In the lobby of this building is One Martine Gallery which is not only for residents to enjoy but for anyone who would like to explore this not-so-hidden gem. This charming gallery features original works, limited editions, emerging art, sculptures and decorated objects. The intimate, enchanting space can be rented out for special events as well. The gallery is both tastefully whimsical and captivating at the same time. Walker Manzke favors local artists and also reviews work for consignment. In fact, every piece on display is up for sale. Work from his roster of artists is exhibited on a rotational basis. Seeing the bigger picture in the future, he has a goal of bringing more artwork to White Plains and breathing new life into the small visual arts scene in our growing city. More public art displays, a surrounding cultural scene and a world of opportunities for rising new artists are all goals he along with other dedicated collaborators are working towards. When One Martine Gallery hosted its opening day, both the Mayor of White Plains and the Governor of New York were in attendance. I am so very pleased to have interviewed this ambitious, cultured, friendly and intelligent art director on this fascinating episode of State of the Arts.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's the most wonderful time of the year... Time for our year end specials!! As our Christmas gift to you, we're sharing our annual political movie picks in the seventh annual round of this not-festive, but definitely fun holiday tradition. This year's slate features a probing documentary, two true-life stories, and a silly drama that thinks it's a serious social commentary. Hang up your stockings, and then sit back with some hot coco as we talk about the movies. And politics. This Thursday, December 23, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Adam's Pick #1: Falling Down (1993). "A middle-aged man dealing with both unemployment and divorce, William Foster is having a bad day. When his car breaks down on a Los Angeles highway, he leaves his vehicle and begins a trek across the city to attend his daughter's birthday party. As he makes his way through the urban landscape, William's frustration and bitterness become more evident, resulting in violent encounters with various people, including a vengeful gang and a dutiful veteran cop." Scotty's Pick #1: On the Basis of Sex (2018). "Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a struggling attorney and new mother who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination." Adam's Pick #2: White Squall (1996). "In 1960, a hardy group of prep school students boards an old-fashioned sailing ship. With Capt. Christopher Sheldon at the helm, the oceangoing voyage is intended to teach the boys fortitude and discipline. But the youthful crew -- among them confident Chuck Gieg, timid Gil Martin and self-satisfied Frank Beaumont - are about to get some unexpected instruction in survival when they get caught in the clutches of a white squall storm." Scotty's Pick #2: What is Democracy? (2018). "This reflection on democracy spans millennia and continents, from ancient Athens' groundbreaking experiment in self-government to capitalism's roots in medieval Italy, and from modern-day Greece grappling the with its financial collapse and mounting refugee crisis to the United States reckoning with its past and the growing gap between rich and poor." Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

In this episode I explore a couple that wasn't complicated at all. In fact, they were in a perfectly happy and healthy relationship. They had an enviable love story. I had been wanting to share their story for some time, and now seemed like a good time. The couple is Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Martin Ginsburg. I'm writing this episode three hours after hearing the news that Justice Ginsburg had passed away. Like many of you, I'm devasted. I've spent the past three hours in a daze and I thought bumping up their love story might help me work through some of those emotions. I first became interested in their relationship when I heard an NPR story where Ruth read the letter her husband wrote to her before he passed away in 2010. I'll save the letter for later in the podcast, but it's quite moving. Shortly thereafter, I watched the doc RBG which shed more light on their remarkable relationship. While this podcast tends to focus more on tragic or hot mess relationships—hence the name Love Will Tear Us Apart—at its core, it's a podcast about epic relationships, and Ruth and Martin's relationship was epic.

In this epic time in our history when the country seems so divided, we all need to take a deep breath and recognize a great American life.  She was born Ruth Bader in Brooklyn, NY in 1933 of a Russian Jewish emigrant father and a Jewish mother from Brooklyn. Her first taste of hardship came early when her mother died the day before Ruth's high school graduation. She went on to attend Cornell University where she met her husband Martin Ginsburg who she married a month after graduation in 1954. She gave birth to her first child a year later while working for the Social Security Administration as her husband was a new Army officer at Ft. Sill Oklahoma. In 1956, Ginsburg enrolled at Harvard Law School, where she was one of only nine women in a class of about 500 men. The Dean of Harvard Law reportedly invited all the female law students to dinner at his family home and asked the female law students, including Ginsburg, "Why are you at Harvard Law School, taking the place of a man?"

“On the Basis of Sex” is a fictionalized account of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's formative years as a lawyer and law professor. The film is informative, in a dutiful way, but it's a skin-deep celebration of someone who's never settled for superficiality in her life's work. Hints of her future self appear, but only in flashes. Mostly the production takes its cues not from real life but from film clichés. The fateful flaw isn't hard to locate. It's the script, which was written by Daniel Stiepleman. For one thing Stiepleman has no experience writing feature films; for another he's Justice Gisnburg's nephew. That constitutes double jeopardy for filmgoers who may wonder why the production is so predictable, in spite of the best efforts of Felicity Jones as Ruth and Armie Hammer as Martin Ginsburg, her loving, charming and endlessly supportive husband. Apparently Marty Ginsburg was all of those things and more, a reputation that's burnished by “RBG,” the fascinating documentary released earlier this year. Still, Hammer's portrayal of the fictionalized Marty is monotone, or rather tri-tone; this guy is loving, charming, and supportive at every moment. The only glimpses of the young Ruth Bader in the documentary came from still photos, and from home movies shot during her undergraduate days at Cornell—a strikingly beautiful young woman asserting her intelligence and sense of purpose in a man's world, and, in the 1950s, aspiring to a place of prominence in a man's profession. That's when “On the Basis of Sex” picks up the fictionalized Ruth—a Cornell grad about to enter Harvard Law School in 1956. We're moved by the hope and resolve that radiate from Ruth's face, and so what if Felicity Jones doesn't quite nail her subject's baroque New York accent. The question of accents raises the larger question of why the role of a quintessentially American heroine was given to an English actress. But casting isn't what vitiates the story's power. Neither is accuracy. The film reminds us of the lowly status of women as recently as 1972, when Ruth, in conjunction with Marty, argues an ostensible tax case that becomes an early success in her almost half-century-long legal battle for gender equality. The trouble with “On the Basis of Sex” is that it fails to make the case for its subject's exceptionalism. We're certainly told how determined she is, how devoted and intelligent, and you can find those qualities in Felicity Jones's performance. What's missing, though, because the writing and direction don't dare to dramatize it, is the steely fury that must have been burning in Ruth's soul all along. There's no way to imagine this young woman growing into the flesh-and-blood thinker and fearless fighter who commands our attention, with renewed urgency, from the intersection of law, politics and mortality. I'm Joe Morgenstern. I'll be back on KCRW next week with more reviews.
