This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include The X-Files, Groundhog Day, Source Code, The X-Files: Fight The Future, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, You've Got Mail, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thelma, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Beekeeper, The Art of War, The Foreigner, Superman Returns, Strangers on a Train, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, The House, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Bourne Identity, Clear and Present Danger, Mission: Impossible, Batman & Robin, The Green Hornet, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Pay It Forward, On The Basis Of Sex, The Leftovers, The Morning Show, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Three Kings, The Men Who Stare At Goats, 24, Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, Twisters and Legally Blonde. Next week, we're switching things up and going back to Hayley's new VHS stack to talk one of the all-time great westerns: 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's deconstruction of the genre that made him famous and a worthy winner of Best Picture Oscar gold. Unforgiven is streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the US. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

The Oddjob Pod returns for another edition of the Action Movie Landfill. A periodic dive into the almost limitless mound of action films from the sell through era in the late twentieth, early twenty first century. For this episode it was down to Terry to choose and it's fair to say that he chose… poorly. Not for the first time Terry allowed his fond memories of a film from years gone by to cloud his judgement and selected the political action thriller from 1997: The Peacemaker. Starring Nicole Kidman and George Clooney, this big budget blockbuster was directed by Mimi Leder and reflects that post cold war, pre 911 spot where studio representations of US foreign policy was resolutely in denial of their place in the world. Watching back now it seems naïve. The films crude characterisations and dated tropes mean that it does not hold up to contemporary scrutiny and is best enjoyed with a time machine. Download the podcast here or you can listen to it on the player below. The Oddjob Pod is also available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon. This week, the guys are joined by Galen Howard to wrap their heads around Kirk Cameron's brain and the film A Little Piece of Heaven, a joyful uplifting Christian movie in which children are kidnapped and convinced that they've died and gone to Heaven so they will hang out with Kirk's lonely developmentally delayed sister. Yup. With this being the wildest premise maybe ever featured on the show, there is no shortage of topics here but the guys also discuss all of the surprisingly racist material, sex, drugs & violence, Agent Mr. Jack Daniels, Cloris Leachman telling kids to beat each other up and much more. "The Morning Show," starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, is Apple TV's flagship show this fall with its lightning-quick writing, superb acting and tense, plot-driven examinations of the cultural landscape. It is the brainchild of director and executive producer Leder, the latest project in her brilliant career. Season Three debuts September 13th, and brings in a new featured actor (Jon Hamm) and several gripping storylines. We talk about her growing up in New York and Los Angeles, her big breaks that got her and her talented pen into the industry, some of her mentors and the many obstacles she had to overcome, as a woman, to reach the success she has today. The wide-ranging conversation also includes our favorite films and television shows, best directors, actors, the studio system and, with the writers/actors strike, missing the camaraderie of the promotional tours for the show. We also talk about the many twists and turns of the Morning Show plot, how "legacy media" is a great prism for looking at the schisms in American politics, the threat of Big Tech and the interpersonal dramas that afflict everyone from the lowest to the highest pinnacles of society. Mimi's film "On the Basis of Sex" about the early career of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also came in for discussion, as well as the connection to Ojai through "friend of the pod" Judith Hale Norris, the supervising attorney for the 10th District Court of Appeals, and the momentous shift of the Dobbs decision and its likely implications for years to come. We did not talk about bottlenose dolphin migrations, the Chinese Warring States period or the latest fashion-forward shoe designs. It's the end of the world again as Dave takes 1998's Deep impact off the shelf. Phil admits to never seeing it despite it being described as the "smart" Armageddon. To his surprise, he thought the movie offered something different and somewhat unique. As Phil sees it, Tea Leoni is the weakest link however Dave really connected to her family story and found her performance compelling. The movie tries to serve all characters well and ends up sagging a little under the weight but the story is delivered well by Mimi Leder and her cast.
Like a comet hurling towards Earth, Nate and Matt clash over Mimi Leder's 1998 disaster drama, "Deep Impact." Watch out for inexplicable car explosions!
Our Guest today is Wendy Crewson Wendy Crewson was the recipient of a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2015; and the Earle Grey Award, given to fewer than 32 collective recipients since 1986, in recognition by the ACCT and the Canadian Entertainment Industry, for Lifetime Achievement in Television. One of Canada's premier actresses, Wendy Crewson has garnered critical and popular acclaim, as well as multiple awards, for her extensive body of work in film and television. Her resume features more than 100 titles, including credits like: Sarah Polley's indie feature AWAY FROM HER; THE VOW, with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum; the Winnie Mandela biopic WINNIE, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard; THE SANTA CLAUSE trilogy opposite Tim Allen; THE CLEARING, with Robert Redford; Eduardo Ponti's BETWEEN STRANGERS, with Sophia Loren; THE LAST BRICKMAKER IN AMERICA, with Sidney Poitier; BICENTENNIAL MAN with Robin Williams; THE SIXTH DAY with Arnold Schwarzenegger; and of course, her role as Harrison Ford's First Lady in AIR FORCE ONE. Throughout her illustrious career, Wendy has amassed more nominations and awards in Canada than any other actress for portraying real women. These are some of her most wellregarded roles and they include: Sue Rodriguez (who went all the way to The Supreme Court of Canada to fight Doctor Assisted suicide while fighting ALS); “Jane Doe” (who made legal history when she sued the police for negligence after being the fifth victim of a serial rapist and realizing that the police knew details and had done nothing to prevent further rapes); Lorraine Evenshen (who tells the story from her own perspective as the wife of popular CFL star Terry Evanshen, who lost his memory after waking up from a coma caused by a car crash); and finally, Louise Arbour (who as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for both the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda, made history with the first indictment of a sitting head of state, for war crimes, the first conviction for genocide and the first to recognize sexual crimes as crimes against humanity). Wendy starred in five seasons of CTV's hit medical drama SAVING HOPE, for which she won Best Actress in a Featured Supporting Role at the 2013 CSAs. Wendy was also in the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film, ROOM with Brie Larson; and appeared opposite Ellen Page in Patricia Rozema's INTO THE FOREST. Wendy was recently seen in the films KODACHROME, with Ed Harris and Jason Sudeikis; DEATH WISH with Bruce Willis.; and director Mimi Leder's timely feature, ON THE BASIS OF SEX. On the small screen, Wendy recently starred on CBS's hit medical drama, GOOD SAM; CBC's popular series FRANKIE DRAKE; in addition to the Hallmark series, WHEN HOPE CALLS; while also shooting the second season of DEPARTURE for Peacock/Global; and her recurring role on TITANS for HBO Max. Before that, she starred in the CTV/ION series THE DETAIL, for which she was nominated for a 2019 CSA. She also recurred in the AMC series THE SON, opposite Pierce Brosnan; and in THE OCTOBER FACTION for Netflix. Wendy continues to be as busy as ever. She joined the cast of CBC's hit procedural, PRETTY HARD CASES for its final season, while also shooting in the highly anticipated series GRAY, opposite Patricia Clarkson. Next, she appears in the independent films BACKSPOT, from director D.W. Waterson; and SAM opposite Elliot Page. We dived right in and started our conversation with the all-consuming fear of ‘coming out' --and we ended – appropriately, with her sense of belonging in a community and industry that she is so passionate about.

This week Zach and Sloane unwrap 1998's science fiction end-of-the-world disaster film: Deep Impact. The film was released the same summer as Armageddon which seems like bad planning. It was a big summer for disaster and a big summer for jersey cotton sheets. Zach accuses Sloane of loving jersey cotton sheets and she defends her honor by insisting she does not enjoy being shrink wrapped and cocooned by sheets in a bag. Other topics of discussion involve end-of-the-word planning, slow apocalypses, and booger couches. It'll all make sense when you listen to that and more on this week's episode of Mummy Dearest podcast!Support the show
In this episode of the show we are going on a mission into space to stop a comet from hitting our planet... while following a paranoid conspiracy thriller... and watching Elijah Wood get married way too young. That is we are talking Deep Impact, a Mimi Leder-directed less talked about competitor to the 1998 Armageddon! Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about injecting drama into disaster movies, injecting disasters into dramas, the idea of stretching the narrative too thin, Bobby Duvall as an absolute scene-stealer and much more! Welcome back friends, we're still existing in 1997. This week, we take a look at the globetrotting Mimi Leder joint The Peacemaker. Unfortunately, John Cena is nowhere to be found—or maybe we just can't see him. This week, Dalton gives us a very brief rundown on the Yugoslav wars, we examine the narrative idea of creating sympathetic villains, the professional dynamics based around gender that arise in the movie are also discussed, and much more hits the analysis table. So, grab your fatigues and fall in line as we take The Peacemaker into conversation. It is a dream of many best-selling authors to become screenwriters as a means of turning their books into movies. In this episode, you will get a glimpse of the reverse scenario- when a very successful Hollywood screenwriter channels his voice into books, with his latest novel YOU MIGHT FEEL A LITTLE PRICK, a murder mystery with subtle messages about the flaws of our health system.Reuben Leder comes from Hollywood royalty- his sisters Mimi Leder being a DGA and Emmy winning director, and Gerardine Leder a successful casting director. He is a multi-episode writer behind top series MAGNUM P.I. and has sold several of his specs to Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Bender, and Robert Evans. In this inspiring podcast, we discuss what it is like being in development hell on movie projects, his own personal hell in the health system while tending to his wife before she passed away, the advice he has been giving to his daughter, also a screenwriter, and working on another personal novel to honor the journey of his parents surviving World War 2.
It seems to happen every few years: two movies with strikingly similar stories get released in the same year. Typically, one emerges as the "winner," the film that sticks in the public's consciousness, while one fades away into pop culture obscurity. What determines these "winners" and "losers" in the world of dueling movies? We take a look at two twin pairs: Big Trouble in Little China (1986, dir. John Carpenter) and The Golden Child (1986, dir. Michael Ritchie); and Armageddon (1998, dir. Michael Bay) and Deep Impact (1998, dir. Mimi Leder) to see if we can figure out the why of it all.

Mary McCormack is one of today's boldest and most versatile actresses, continually challenging herself with roles that often defy Hollywood standards and bring to light the complex lives of ordinary women. The LA Times says, “McCormack has a kind of 20th century sass, a lively impertinence you find in classic Hollywood comedians like Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne and Rosalind Russell.” She has shown her immense talent working in film, television and on stage, and has tackled roles ranging from slapstick comedy to intense drama. Tony-nominated for her role in Broadway's “Boeing Boeing” opposite Mark Rylance, she is also widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of “The West Wing" (two SAG Award nominations), as the lead of USA's critically acclaimed “In Plain Sight,” and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts. McCormack's recent television work includes starring roles in the ABC series “The Kids Are Alright,” the AMC series “Loaded,” the NBC comedy series “Welcome To The Family” as well as arcs on such shows as HBO's “The Newsroom,” “Scandal” (ABC), Gus van Sant's award-winning miniseries “When We Rise” (ABC), “House of Lies” (Showtime) and the “Will & Grace” reboot (NBC). McCormack will also appear in the new Hulu Blumhouse anthology series “Treehouse.” McCormack can also be seen in the HBO Max feature Unpregnant. In non-scripted, McCormack produces the hit game show “25 Words or Less” alongside Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky which was just renewed for a second season. Next up, McCormack can be seen staring in the STARZ series “Heels.” McCormack returned to the Broadway stage in 2008 to star in “Boeing Boeing” alongside Christine Baranski, Mark Rylance and Bradley Whitford. Marc Camoletti's classic sixties comedy won the Tony for Best Revival and earned McCormack a 2008 Tony nomination for “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.” Additional stage credits include a highly successful run opposite Alan Cumming as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall-directed Broadway production of “Cabaret” for the Roundabout Theatre Company, as well as the acclaimed London stage production of Neil LaBute's play “Bash,” the David Warren-directed productions of “My Marriage To Earnest Borgnine” and Jon Robin Baitz's “A Fair Country.” McCormack breakout performance, opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts, won her universal critical acclaim. McCormack's additional television and feature credits include: Aaron Sorkin's NBC smash hit “The West Wing,” a recurring role on “ER,” Right At Your Door, the Stephen King thriller 1408, Christopher Guests' “For Your Consideration,” the Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney HBO political series “K-Street,” as Justine Appleton in Steve Bochco's “Murder One,” as well as the USA Network miniseries “Traffic,” directed by Stephen Hopkins (24). In addition, McCormack has appeared in varied roles in such films as Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star opposite David Spade; K-PAX opposite Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey; Full Frontal, directed by Steven Soderbergh and opposite David Duchovny and Catherine Keener; High Heels & Low Lifes with Minnie Driver; Mystery, Alaska, written by David E. Kelley and starring Russell Crowe; Other Voices, with Stockard Channing and Campbell Scott; The Broken Hearts Club, opposite John Mahoney and Timothy Olyphant; The Big Tease opposite Craig Ferguson; Gun Shy with Sandra Bullock and Liam Neeson; the Clint Eastwood film, True Crime; Mimi Leder's Deep Impact; The Alarmist, opposite Stanley Tucci; Father's Day and Miracle on 34th Street. She also appeared in Michael G. Cooney's The Men and the feature film Drone with Sean Bean as well as Amazon's period drama American Girl: Mary Ellen. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, McCormack is a graduate of Trinity College and resides with her family in Los Angeles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Chris and Isaac brace for Deep Impact. Does the film successfully explore humanity's resilience in the face of peril? Or is it more of a TV movie we catch and secretly root for the comet? This week, your hosts finish telling you everything there is to know about 1998's two biggest disaster films, discuss Mimi Leder's varied directing career, and finally reveal Elijah Wood's path to the Shire. Love it? Hate it? Share your own take on Twitter (@pickyourtake), Facebook, YouTube, or by email, at pickyourtakepod@gmail.com.
This week, the government has completely failed us... and so, all we can do is sink into some 90s nostalgia and brace for a Deep Impact. Deep Impact is a 1998 American science-fiction disaster film directed by Mimi Leder, produced by Stephen Spielberg, and starring Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, and Morgan Freeman. The film depicts the attempts to prepare for and destroy a 7-mile wide comet set to collide with Earth and cause a mass extinction. The film was released the same summer as a similarly themed film, Armageddon (Starring Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck), which fared better at the box office, while astronomers described Deep Impact as being far more scientifically accurate. Bonfire night, November 5th 2015, 9.30pm. An agent fires off an email. An author is accused of plagiarism. His new book lies ready to be pulped. In the first of a new series of Sideways, Matthew Syed asks why we're doomed to be unoriginal and why it hurts so much to be, well, not that special. In 1998, Hollywood directors Matthew Bay and Mimi Leder went head to head with suspiciously similar disaster movies - Armageddon and Deep Impact. Allegations of late-night spying flew around. But could there have just been something in the air? Matthew reveals that, four years earlier, fragments of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet smashed into Jupiter and right into the American consciousness. This is the thing... As Matthew discovers, our brains are wired for unoriginality, we evolve as a collective brain, absorbing our shared cultural cues and looking for what has worked in the past. But if that's the norm, why do we feel so disappointed when our ideas seem unoriginal, when someone else beats us to it? And is there a way out of this - to rekindle our originality? With author Ian Leslie, Kristen Lopez, TV editor for Indiewire and pop culture critic, Dr Michael Muthukrishna, Associate Professor of Economic Psychology at the London School of Economics and Nick Groom, Professor of Literature in English, University of Macau. Presenter: Matthew Syed Producer/Series Editor: Katherine Godfrey Executive Producer: Max O'Brien Music, Sound Design and Mix: Nicholas Alexander Research and Development: Gavin Haynes and Madeleine Parr Theme Music: Seventy Times Seven by Ioana Selaru A Novel production for BBC Radio 4

It's the summer of 1998, and a celestial rock is on a collision course for planet Earth. Our first ever double-feature episode explores the right-wing, explosive preposterousness of Michael Bay's 'Armageddon' alongside the competent, neoliberal eulogy that is Mimi Leder's 'Deep Impact'. Aaron & Carlee sing some Aerosmith and become Ben Affleck apologists along the way.
Though her most recent triumph is the highly-praised Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit, Michelle Tesoro has built a career working with A-list showrunners and directors, within both film and television. From mastering the art of the dialog scene with the HBO series In Treatment, to her collaborations with luminaries like Michael Mann, David Fincher, Ava DuVernay, Mimi Leder and David Milch, she has plenty of stories to tell. Tesero managed to navigate the exact career she wanted and has plenty of wisdom to impart, like why sometimes saying no to projects is even more important than saying yes. We hope you enjoy! Director Mimi Leder engages in an in-depth conversation with Jeremy Kagan about her filmography and the lessons she's learned over her career. Ms. Leder discusses her directing process using examples from The Leftovers, On the Basis of Sex, and The Peacemaker.
This week on "TheWrap-Up," we discussed the Republican National Convention, the NBA's protests over the shooting of Jacob Blake and the impending sale of TikTok. Then, we flashed the Bat-Signal to our resident comic book experts, Umberto Gonzalez and Ross Lincoln, to discuss Warner Bros.' huge fan event, DC FanDome. Finally, our interview with Mimi Leder, the Emmy-nominated director and executive producer of "The Morning Show." She talked to us about the show's ripped-from-headlines style, her experiences as a female director in Hollywood and how she escaped "movie jail." “The Dress Rehearsal” premiered on April 13th, 2013. It was written by Julia Brownell, who last penned episode 6 of this season, and was directed by Mimi Leder, who last directed episode 7 from LAST season. The viewership of Smash hit its all-time run-of-show low this week, bottoming out at 1.80 million, which was down from the previous week by 80,000 viewers. Silver lining: it only goes up from here!! We had all original songs but nothing new this week. We were able to revisit excerpts from Bombshell’s Let Me Be Your Star, Our Little Secret, and Dig Deep, all written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman, and a new acapella prologue version of Broadway Here I Come for Hit List, written by Joe Iconis. Even though he isn’t an actor, director/liberrist Tom Levitt is having actors’ nightmares before Bombshell’s invited dress. The run-through is riddled with mistakes - a surprise nude scene for Ivy, the house did not come in for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and poor Brian pulls a muscle - which means that Sam might be going on for him. Eileen recommends cancelling Bombshell’s first preview but Tom thinks it’s an invitation to the press to sharpen their knives. So Eileen gives him a challenge: fix all the problems by 3pm today or she’s going to cancel the performance. Jimmy has been pulling all-nighters writing nine new songs for Hit List, a task which he is sure has been laid on him by Derek as retribution for Karen and Jimmy dating. Derek is finally reinspired to make changes to Hit List - adding reprises and a new framing device that tells the story in flashback. Jimmy is having a fit about the changes, but it’s hard to know whether that’s because of his ego, his all-nighters, or his coke habit. Kyle and Ana are hype about the rapid-changes Derek is making to Hit List, but Karen is convinced they are simply retribution for dating Jimmy. Tom isn’t able to fix all of the problems of the invited dress in six hours, but lies to Eileen so she doesn’t cancel the first preview. But when Tom isn’t able to get the intermission down to 15 minutes, Julia pinch-hits with a new staging idea for the top of Act II that allows it to be staged in the audience instead of the stage. Even though Ivy’s nudity in the dress rehearsal was a mistake, it’s given the show a spike in both buzz and ticket sales. Eileen and Tom ask Ivy to keep the nudity, a decision she doesn’t make until she onstage for the first preview. When she finally decides to keep the nudity, it ends up making a show-stopping moment that is perfect for the scene. But all is not good with Bombshell. After not being put on to cover an ailing ensemblist, Sam quits the show saying that his career is “going in the wrong direction.” And New York Times publishes an article saying the spirit of Marilyn Monroe is alive and well onstage, but in Hit List. The Grey Lady calls Hit List “edgy and occasionally brilliant, bound to take the theatre season by storm” and leading the way for Hit List to move uptown toward the Main Stem. Episode 370 of the GenreCast takes us back to 1998 to discuss the OTHER asteroid movie of that year, Deep Impact. Back on Ep. 291, we talked all about Michael Bay's take on the genre, so this week we're talking Mimi Leder and her approach to the disaster film. Deep Impact boasts a star studded lineup, including Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman, Elijah Wood, James Cromwell, and many more. It's a race against the clock, sort of, as America tries to stop an asteroid from wiping out life on earth. With a similar plot to Armageddon, we discuss what sets Deep Impact apart. We're talking twin movies, nationalism, disaster movies, and much more in our look at Deep Impact.
A very fun and fantastic episode with the actor, writer, and director Kestrin Pantera (Mother’s Little Helpers, Let’s Ruin It with Babies). She’s on the program to discuss 1999’s classic Galaxy Quest. Kestrin elaborates on her deep love for Star Trek, and even throws in a “mind meld” reference. She talks about her process of writing for specific actors. And she also reveals her method for gaining actors’ trust on set and allowing them to work freely. You can watch Mother’s Little Helpers on VOD now.If you haven’t seen Galaxy Quest…it’s great!AND, if you want to check out April’s Staff Pick – watch Mimi Leder’s Deep ImpactWith April Wolfe and Kestrin Pantera

“The Workshop” premiered on March 19, 2012. It was written by Jason Grote, and directed by Mimi Leder. The episode premiered to 6.56 million viewers, down about half a mil from the previous week. Being the workshop presentation, we basically saw excerpts of all the original music from Bombshell by Shaiman and Whitman that we have seen thus far, but we also saw a new original song called “On Lexington and 52nd Street” in its entirety which closed out the presentation. We also saw a cover of Colbie Caillat’s “Brighter Than the Sun,” but the tour de force number we got to see was “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy. Investors are coming in tomorrow to watch the workshop presentation of Bombshell. The flame is hot between Julia Houston and Michael Swift, canoodling in the hallways outside the rehearsal room. Ivy Lynn arrives at rehearsal with her mother, Leigh Conroy, who just happens to be a veteran Broadway star in her own right. With only a day before the presentation, rehearsal pauses so that Ms. Conroy can wow the company of Bombshell with an impromptu rendition of “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” Moments later, rehearsal pauses yet again when Michael Swift’s wife and son barge into rehearsal, causing Julia to storm out of rehearsal and leave rehearsal. Again: the day before the presentation. With all of the personal drama combined with the rehearsal building seemingly crumbling under their feet, Derek Wells wonders if the project is cursed. But Eileen Rand promises him that Bombshell will be a hit “because Marilyn deserved it.” Leigh Conroy won a Tony without drugs but it doesn’t look like Ivy Lynn will be able to claim the same accomplishment, taking sleeping pills the night before the presentation. She confides in Tom Hewitt that “her mother is doing everything she can to undermine her, and Karen Cartwright is being handed everything on a plate.” The workshop begins with Ivy singing to a swelling imaginary orchestra, but it’s Karen who see dreaming of performing the role of Marilyn. With highlights of the fantasy sequences we’ve seen from the TV series’ first six episodes, we watch both the workshop and the watching of the workshop. Everyone seems to be a bit off of their game, with Ivy falling in a lift, Karen falling off of a platform, and Michael Swift falling head over heels in love with Julia. Amidst the drama, Karen Cartwright records a demo for Bobby Raskin across the street and wins over yet another potential critic with vocals. The next morning at 6am, she gets woken up by a call that Raskin wants to meet her but she skips it to perform in the workshop. The rest of the ensemble questions her decision but she says “she wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” After the workshop, Ivy confronts her mother by drawing a comparison between herself and Marilyn: both were sad and drug-addicted women whose mothers didn’t love them. Leigh tells her that she knows how difficult this business can be, and that even though wishes Ivy would be something else with her life, her day will come because she truly is talented. The team also contemplates the future of Bombshell - and whether Ivy Lynn or Michael Swift will be a part of that future at all... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It’s a disaster this week as the Leslie leads our fearless crew through Deep Impact. This first of two 1998 films about giant space rocks hitting the earth was written by Bruce Joel Rubin and Michael Tolkin and directed by Mimi Leder. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a film as an example of a significant story principle. The rest of us explore different aspects of the story so we can all understand it better. Click here for the full show notes.

This week’s guest esteemed Director Mimi Leder, who’s behind the incredible movie On The Basis Of Sex- The Ruth Bader-Ginsburg biopic which is out in the cinemas as of February 22nd. It’s a fantastic watch that I highly recommend you go and see. RBG is a true feminist icon who infamously moved the needle on gender discrimination and women’s rights in the supreme court.Mimi Leder is a producer and Director. Her credits include On the Basis of sex, The Leftovers Deep Impact and Pay it forward. On the Basis of Sex is Mimi’s first feature film in 18 years following what she describes as ‘movie jail’. We don’t get into that but for some context Pay it Forward wasn’t as successful, and Mimi struggled to get hired as a Director afterwards, she believed this was in part due to her being a woman in a heavily male-dominated industry. In today’s episode, you will learn one of the best ways to deal with feedback and criticism, how you can progress in your career as a woman in male-dominated industries, and why it’s important that we are inclusive when hiring our crews. We jump straight in with why she said yes to ‘On the Basis of Sex’ after 18 years.Thank you so much for listening in. Sam Clements and Sarah Cook talk to director Mimi Leder and co-star Armie Hammer about their new film, On The Basis Of Sex. The true story of the pioneering lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones), her struggles for equal rights in law and what she had to overcome in order to become a female US Supreme Court Justice – the second-ever woman in such a position. The film focuses on the first sex discrimination case that Ruth Ginsburg took on, in the early 1970s, when she represented Charles Moritz (Chris Mulkey), a Colorado man looking after his elderly mother who was denied a tax benefit routinely given to women caring for family members. From that moment, Ruth was on a quest to banish sex discrimination in law. This film is about that legal crusade but is also about the woman at home with her children, and a portrait of Ruth’s extraordinary marriage to Marty Ginsburg (Armie Hammer). On the Basis Of Sex tells the story of a fascinating woman, with compelling insights into the arguments of our time.
On Truth & Movies this week, Michael Leader, Elena Lazic and Hannah Woodhead preside over a pair of very different courtroom dramas. First in the dock is On the Basis of Sex, Mimi Leder’s Hollywood biopic of Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, followed by Nadine Labaki’s Cannes-winning Capernaum, about a young Lebanese boy who sues his parents for neglect. In Film Club, Leder’s 1998 disaster movie Deep Impact – at the time the highest budget given to a female director – gets a long-overdue reappraisal. Today's guest is the brilliant actor Felicity Jones, known for her previous roles in The Worst Witch, Spiderman 2, Rogue One and The Theory Of Everything which won her an Oscar nomination. Her newest role is playing the "Notorious RBG" Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On The Basis Of Sex which is out now.As the Guardian said recently on RBG: "At 85, she remains one of the few progressive hopes on what’s set to become an increasingly Trumpian supreme court and after the documentary RBG was a surprise box office hit this summer, timing couldn’t be better for its narrative counterpart."Ginsburg was one of the few female lawyers at Harvard and her professors were awful and sexist to her. She worked so hard and then became one of only female justice on the Supreme Court and the gender-based laws she has changed means we can live the lives we do, so many parts were deeply moving: her relationship with her daughter, her supportive loving husband. She has spent her life fighting for social radical change and demanded laws be updated. I definitely want to try and channel even 0.1% of her levels of determination. The script was written by RBG's nephew Daniel Stiepleman and it was directed by Mimi Leder. I recommend you going to see it immediately! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Are women finally breaking through off screen in the film industry? A year on from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, why aren't there more female movie directors at the Oscars?Regan Morris reports from a Hollywood still coming to terms with the #MeToo movement. She speaks to Leah Meyerhof, founder of Film Fatales - a movement that brings together female film and TV directors on the West Coast - as well as directors Alyssa Downs and Rijaa Nadeem.Meanwhile Nithya Raman of the Time's Up campaign against sexual harassment explains why they have launched the "4% Challenge" - named after the derisory number of top-grossing films directed by women - as well as a legal defence fund and a mentorship programme for women.Plus actors Armie Hammer and Felicity Jones talk about a forthcoming movie about the pioneering Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, being directed by Mimi Leder.(Picture: The 22 Oscars won by the Lord of The Rings ; Credit: Dean Treml/AFP/Getty Images)

October 2018 brought us RBG, the documentary about the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Now we have On the Basis of Sex, a biopic starring Felicity Jones as this iconic leader in the fight for gender equality and justice under the law. The film is directed by Mimi Leder. The film focuses on the period between RBG's first year in law school and the first case she tries in court. Does the film work to humanize the subject, or perhaps to dehumanize the men who continuously tried to demean her? Perhaps most striking is how quickly some of us have forgotten what it was like to live through this transitional period, and how long people have been pursuing equal protection and rights under the law. Host Jonathan Schwartz is joined by Alex Ago, Carla Della Gatta, and David Warshofsky to discuss the film, opening today. While you might know most of RBG's story, beware of spoilers. Hi there, it's Mo here with a really special treat. In June, I moderated a panel on the HBO drama "The Leftovers" at the ATX Television Festival in Austin. It was a few days after the show's series finale aired, and on the panel were executive producer Damon Lindelof, executive producer (and author of the novel "The Leftovers") Tom Perrotta, and executive producer/director Mimi Leder. At the start of the conversation, I handed out tissues to all the panelists, because I was fairly sure most of us were going to cry at some point. Many did, but before and after those moments, we talked about the show in depth, and it was life-affirming to hear these creative and thoughtful people talk about the themes of "The Leftovers" and the choices they made and why this amazing program ended the way it did. Near the end, Lindelof made me cry in a way I totally did not see coming (which seems like a very "Leftovers"-ian thing to do, and that moment also has to do with this essay). By the way, if you're a "Leftovers completist, don't miss this previous Talking TV podcast on the show! One other note: Jasmin Savoy-Brown, who played Evie Murphy, was in the audience, and that led to the above moment of mild hilarity (because everyone enjoys Guilty Remnant humor). In any event, I loved moderating this panel, the panelists were wise and funny and informative, the audience questions at the end were great, and lots of people got a little bit misty before it was all over. What more could we ask for? Be sure to subscribe to the new feed for the podcast here if you like to listen on iTunes. You'll see plenty of ways in each post to stream or download MP3s if you hate iTunes. You can also subscribe on Stitcher if you like. Options abound. Also, we have an email for the podcast now!
Episode 35 - Kathrine Bigelow This episode features the perkiest introduction ever. Possibly because it's Mitch rockin' the mike, but things snap back to reality very quickly as Mondy compares himself to Jesus. Just another day at a recording of Shooting the Poo... This episode sees the boys discussing the career of Kathryn Bigelow, along with frequent tangents onto whatever subjects take their fancy. The films that are MASSIVELY SPOILED (seriously, watch them if you're remotely interested in any of their plot twists) are The Loveless, Blue Steel, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker. Dave cruelly denied Mitch the chance to rewatch Near Dark and Point Break, although inevitably these get a mention as well. You just can't keep Keanu Reeves' finest performance down. The conversation quickly devolves into Mondy's most racist and sexist ever, which is quite some achievement. He also describes a bar shooting as "*very* moderate" and contends that Citizen Kane's major cinematic innovation was "lowering the ground". Dave has a theory - have you noticed he always has one of those? - about how to make Hollywood pay attention to angry audience members, and seems oddly preoccupied with Mimi Leder for some reason. Meanwhile Mitch reaches peak happiness when Mondy uses the words "police academy" in passing and then begins humming the theme tune to the eponymous movie. Mondy immediately joins in. For a moment there it was like being in a recording studio with Pavlov's dogs. As usual, there is a lot of swearing, puerile themes and did I mention the MASSIVE SPOILERS? You have been warned. Please go to and tell Apple via iTunes that you love the show or provide feedback here at shootingthepoo@gmail.com. We would love to hear what you have to say.
