William Foster, the author of "From The Game To The Kingdom," brings a compelling narrative drawn from his own life experiences. Growing up in a neighborhood that was a breeding ground for professional thieves and con men, Foster's early life was marked by a pursuit of the hustler's dream, immersed in a world where loyalty and honor were currency among the legends of deception. His journey from the streets to a 14-year prison term, and ultimately to a spiritual awakening, forms the crux of his book. "From The Game To The Kingdom" is not just a tale of personal transformation but also a testimony to the power of redemption and the profound impact of faith in one's life. Through his raw, honest storytelling, Foster shares insights into the harsh realities of street life, the consequences of choices made, and the possibility of finding a new path through faith

150 Years Ago (September 1874) Following a report that a student had swam across the Hudson River near West Point in 40 minutes, a former Cold Spring resident, A. Maxwell, claimed he had done it in 35 minutes. "I feel confident I could have done it in 30 minutes but for a stiff breeze blowing me up the river," forcing him to sidestroke. He said Mr. Black, who had followed in a boat, could corroborate. The West Point Foundry organized its second annual excursion for employees and their families aboard the William Cook, which left the dock at 8:25 a.m. on a Thursday with 1,000 passengers. "As early as 7 a.m., the living tide began to flow down the [Main Street] hill" to the dock, reported The Cold Spring Recorder. While James Ruddiman and his family were on the excursion, thieves broke into their home near Little Stony Point and stole $50 [about $1,400 today]. A gold-leaf sign was applied to the plate-glass door at Pelham & Co. Jewelers. A carriage driver stopped his team just as a front wheel knocked down Jimmy Murphy, 4, opposite St. Mary's Church. The boy was not seriously injured. An eagle sat for a time atop the Reformed Church spire. The Putnam County Agricultural Society held its 24th annual Cattle Show and Horse Exhibition over four days at the fairgrounds in Carmel. Clara Louise Kellogg, a diva who had a summer home in Philipstown, gave an impromptu concert in the dining hall at West Point. To reduce fatalities, the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad said it would more aggressively prosecute people who walked on the tracks. A baseball game between the hometown Kellogg team and a squad from Newburgh ended prematurely after William Foster began bickering with the umpire, who called the game after he said the pitcher denounced him as a "____ liar!" The editor of The Recorder defended Foster, saying he had been "goaded into unreasonable passion." The Recorder noted an unusual sight during the slow shipping season: a "cloud of canvas" as 22 ships passed Constitution Island and the dock at the same time. At least 1,500 people in the area had malarial fever, although no one was sure how it spread. "A general opinion has prevailed that the upper lower coves and the marsh are fertile sources," reported The Recorder. It said a man who had recently purchased a home left until "the air became more healthful." [Mosquitoes would not be identified as transmitters of malaria until the turn of the century.] The Recorder called out The Newburgh Journal for its accusation that a Cold Spring team canceled a baseball game at the last minute to avoid losing. After the Putnams' manager said several key players had malarial fever, which can cause shivering, The Journal claimed their "shakes" were probably caused by fear of playing the Magnolias. Richard Denney lost $9 [$250] in Nelsonville while betting on the position of the "little joker" in a game of thimblerig [aka the shell game]. M. Ladue and H. Mekeel killed an adder that contained 27 baby serpents. Henry Porter, superintendent of the gasworks, was awakened at 2 a.m. by cries from the street outside his home. He found a man with a badly sprained ankle who said he had fallen from a pile of lumber in the darkness after getting off a boat. Porter and the watchman took the injured man to the depot in a wheelbarrow, set up bedding and at daylight took him to the friend he was coming to meet. John Chase, while hunting squirrels in DeRham's woods, shot a crane that measured over 4 feet tall. Chase said he would experiment with cooking it. An anonymous reader who attended the Democratic caucus at Town Hall noted strife between two factions, with one claiming the other's delegates had been bribed to make nominations. "In olden times - say 50 years ago - whoever heard of money entering into elections?" he asked. After rowing across the river, the Kellogg club defeated Cornwall, 67-5. The game was called after the Cold Spring squad scored 25 runs in the sixth inning. Dr. Lente reported ...

“Only 7% of all technical information is transmitted through the verbal word. Everything else is done through body language, rhythm speed, volume, intonation, etc.” But what do verbal and non-verbal communication have to do with veterans in agriculture? Our guest this week on the #VetsIn Ag podcast referenced this quote while describing his own transition into the private sector. William Foster, an agricultural equipment technician at Ben Burgess and Co., a John Deere dealer in the UK, began his career in the British Army leading and teaching tracked vehicle reconnaissance and equipment. There he developed a set of tangible and intangible skills that should have been directly transferrable to the agricultural machinery sector. However, due to an early career rejection and a typo in a presentation request, a passion was ignited in Will to close this skill gap and prove to his current employer that he had what it took to be successful in this industry. Have a listen to this episode to find out how Will ended up here, his passion for helping veterans transfer their skills to a new career, and his views on the future of mechanized machinery in ag and the nuances of a farmer's right to repair.

Cat lovers will enjoy the continuation of our spooky season read along, as James and Will experience multiple stories from the Petshop of Horror. There's one about a dangerous mermaid that resembles someone's dead wife, another about jumping into someone else's dream and a white cat that grants its owner good luck! Skip synopsis @ 7:40   Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   127: Petshop of Horrors vol. 2 By Akino Matsuri Translation by Tomoharu Iwo and James Lucas Jones Lettering by Nunu Ngien   Continuing from the previous volume, we have four episodic chapters revolving around D's Petshop and the detective Leon Orcot, who suspect the store manager of criminal activity.   The first story, "Dragon" involves D accidentally giving a customer a dragon's egg. With the help of detective Orcot they race before christmas day to retreive it before it hatches.   In the second story, we have William Foster, a man down on his luck, he takes a cat that gives him good luck! To him it appears as a young girl who calls him daddy, her name is Lady. When the man breaks his contract and makes her cry, D force his hand and challenges him for Lady through a game of dice. Can William win back Lady's love without her luck on his side?   The third story "Delicious", revolves around the death of the pop star Evangeline Blue and D finding another exotic cryptid creature in the same ocean that Blue died in. Blue's widow, Jason, finds out that she bought a pet at the shop before her death, the pet itself, a mermaid who looks just like the dead Evangeline Blue. An assiistant manager from Blue's record label, Louise, confesses to the police and Orcot. Explaining how the marriage was a sham and a PR stunt, when Blue found out she became suicidal on the day of the wedding. Unfortunately, Jason has mistook guilt for love and has fallen for the mermaid that resembles Blue. By the time police investigate, he is eaten by the fish monster and they find the remains of Blue inside the monster's stomach. Was it guilt that made him think the fish looked like the dead Evangeline Blue? Or was somehow the fish monster a mystical agent, avenging the scorned Blue?   The Final story revolves around D whom after trouble sleeping spends the night at the natural history musuem. Detective Leon Orcot spies on him after seeing him buy off the security, expecting D of making narcotics trade he instead finds him asleep surrounded by a cloud of incense. Soon Leon finds himself breathing in the substance and ends up un a magical trance where he finds he has fallen into D's dream. In the dream spell, both D and Leon experience a pre historical time where animals that are extinct walk the land once more. Leon is willing to kill the animals to survive mucch to the annoyance of D. But D leaves the dream world before Leon does and Leon is left alone to fend for himself. Eventually the two come back to the real world, and D invites him round his home for tea, knowing that Leon has changed a bit and that Leon may know a little bit more about D than he did before.     ·       During the “Delicious” chapter we see a noticeable plot hole. How could Evangeline Blue purchase a pet if the pet itself was the one that killed her? One theory James and Will did not discuss is the possibility that D deliberately gave a different pet to Jason, knowing that Blue died. Another is that D is lying and is merely avenging Blue's death.   ·       The Destruction chapter which shows one character in another's dream is an interesting twist on the type of episodic plot that is made where two antagonising characters develop intimacy.Usually there is body swapping, but in a non-fantasy setting you have characters survive a plane crash or ship wreck and get stranded, an urban setting would involve characters getting stuck in an elevator or trapped because of a cave-in from an earthquake, upon where we learn the hard man character may have a fear of confined spaces or darkness, or one confesses their feelings of love or attraction. Sitcoms tend to involve one character nursing a sick one when doing this story, although sommetimes characters will just be in a confined space so that they become cannon fodder for jokes. Whatever the case, the goal is that the characters know more about eachother then they did before the episode. The destruction chapter is notable for its use of liminal space in telling such a story, without resorting to something like a "spirit walk".   References throughout the manga   ·       5 octave range, is a very large range of pitch. The most famous example of such a singer with this vocal range is Mariah Carey. Some vocalists can do a 6-octave range, but this is rare with only a handful in the world being able to so. ·       Evangeline Blue has won a Grammy. Where as in reality, Beyonce is the artist with the most grammys won, having 32, with 88 nomiations and earning 6 in one night, the name “grammy” is given because the trophy is shaped like a gramophone and they are given from the Recording Academy. They are basically to music what oscars are to film.         Facebook Instagram Twitter/X Official Website   Email

FALLING DOWN (1993) begins innocuously enough when an unnamed white male in his 50's abandons his car in the blazing heat of downtown Los Angeles traffic with the simple and relatable enough desire to get home to his family. Meanwhile Martin Prendergast (Robert Duvall) is having a sh*tty last day on the job, stuck in that same congestion and heading towards a retirement he doesn't want from a police force that doesn't respect him, in order to become a carer for his unstable wife. As reports emerge of an unusual robbery at a supermarket and a gang-land dispute gone horribly wrong, Prendergast finds himself largely alone on the trail of "D-FENS" who leaves a trail of violence in his wake. The double D's - Duvall and Douglas - are both excellent; Douglas in particular as William Foster, the simmering ball of rage and alienation at the centre of the movie, while there's many memorable and well-executed scenes which have had a lasting impact on popular culture but this has always been a movie with some dubious messages and a very dark point of view. As an audience we're invited to enjoy Douglas's rebellion, to somehow see him as defiant in the face of oppression and therefore by extension we should enjoy him terrorizing his targets which consist largely of low-income migrants, service or retail staff and blue-collar construction workers. Prendergast's wife's illness is treated fairly insensitively even for the 90's and there's a weirdly misogynistic scene where a police officer implies Foster's wife may have demonised her former partner. The confusing encouragement and insistence the film has on portraying Foster's gripes as legitimate are totally at odds with the parts about the racist white man with a machine gun, fascism and the unchecked entitlement of the Boomer generation which is really what this is all about. Unfortunately cited as an inspiration for disenfranchised and psychotic mentalists who believe that cathartically sticking it to the man involves going crazy with firearms, which let's face it is essentially anyone who supports The Second Amendment at this point.

Ante esto el ex ministro de Hacienda, Rodrigo Valdés (PPD), dijo que "somos muy insulares en esto de reaccionar a alguna cosa que diga algún analista en el mundo, que ni siquiera son muy buenos analistas". You've all heard of REEBOK.  Many of you own one or more pairs of Reeboks.  But how many of you know the fascinating story behind the brand?  Reebok's history and how the company evolved over the past several decades has both been a MARATHON and a HUNDRED-YARD DASH at times.  Through it all, there is one man who has been there from the beginning.  This week's guest, the legendary JOE FOSTER, has got 60 YEARS of experience he's going to share, so step up to the starting line and get ready for a run like you've never heard before.Running shoes and running companies are both in the Foster family genes.  Joe's grandfather, also Joseph W. Foster, pioneered the spiked running shoe and gained worldwide notoriety making those shoes under the brand J. W. Foster & Sons Ltd.  The best athletes of the early 20th century used them to set numerous WORLD RECORDS and earn a slew of OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS.  From those successes, Joe and his late brother Jeff launched Reebok in the UK in 1958.  It took another 20 years to crack the U.S. market, but Reebok did at the height of a fitness craze.  The results were ASTOUNDING.  In five years, Reebok grew ONE HUNDRED TIMES OVER, from a £9m to a £900m business.  When Joe left the day-to-day operations in 1990, Reebok and Reebok International were worth a combined $3 BILLION.Joe remains an ambassador and speaker, and recently published an autobiography of his journey launching Reebok, called "Shoe Maker: The untold story of the British family firm that became a global brand".You're going to enjoy hearing a lot of INSIDER STORIES about how Reebok grew EXPONENTIALLY but you'll also hear how Joe and his brother dealt with years and years of REJECTIONS before breaking through.  Reebok understood the importance of INFLUENCERS early on, and Joe reveals how Reebok leveraged those relationships as a key element of the company's GROWTH STRATEGY.One of the most important things Joe talks about is how to FIND BALANCE as a family man and an entrepreneur.  If you've struggled with this, pay close attention to how Joe has managed to find that DELICATE SWEET SPOT that's a common problem for lots of success-driven people.Joe wraps up things with some FUN advice for entrepreneurs.Just like wearing the best shoes on the planet is an important part of WINNING THE RACE, you need to download the best advice on the planet if you want to win whatever race you're in.  And an hour spent listening to Joe Foster will definitely give you the COMPETITIVE EDGE you need.

Sometime in the summer of 1860, just over 100 kidnapped africans children came ashore in Mobile Bay, part of the gulf coast of Alabama. The reports on the specific number of slaves on board vary anywhere from 109 to 116. The slave trade had been outlawed for over 50 years at this point, but that didn't stop William Foster from seeking a profit on the exploitation of human lives. More than 8,000 captives were brought to the American South by slave traders following the 1807 ban. American shipowners, merchants, seamen and corrupt officials, a majority of then based out of New York City, continued shipping captive Africans well past when it was legal. The ship that brought the slaves in was a 86 foot double masted Schooner, called the Clotilda. Endowments are a common form of giving to higher education, arts , and medical research organizations. William Foster, managing partner, and Darren Isom, partner, of The Bridgespan Group, analyzed the investment income of 56 nonprofits dedicated to social change. Between 2000 and 2013, only 5% of philanthropic gifts of $10 million or more were deployed to endow social change organizations. On average, the endowments of organizations led by people of color were almost four times smaller than those of white-led organizations, and their average percentage of revenue was less than half. Rarely are endowments deployed for funding social change but they are common institutional nonprofits: 70% of organizations in higher education; 33% among hospitals, and 23% in the arts. Based on their analysis, Foster and Isom authored a piece in Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) titled "Endow Black-Led Nonprofits." In this episode, Isom and Foster tackle what they say are the three objections that funders and donors often cite about endowing social change nonprofits: Most nonprofits, especially those led by people of color, lack the capacity to absorb a large gift. Nonprofits should work themselves out of business. I can manage the money better than a nonprofit. "It's a stodgy tool for a radical purpose," Foster said of endowments. "It's about giving money that you have to an organization that can deploy it in perpetuity. And it's how all the greatest institutions that had a huge effect on our civil society was built," he said. "An endowment is not just a gift of transfer of money, it's a transfer of power," Isom said. "That makes endowments the ultimate form of trust-based philanthropy. The question becomes how do you disrupt the narrative in which you share who you think should be given that power." The pair put into context the disparity of endowment sizes of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The 10 most richly endowed universities have almost 95 times larger than the total wealth of all 107 HBCUs combined. "As we think about the myth of absorptive capacity to some degree, I think there's something to be said, that for black-led organizations, particularly those with a proven record of progress, giving them too much isn't the problem, the real pitfall is when you give them too little," Isom said. "We engage in this world of philanthropic sharecropping where organizations are given just enough to make it into the year and ask for more the following year. There's something to be said about how you change the dynamic there." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nonprofittimes/message

The following is a conversation between William Foster and Darren Isom of the Bridgespan Group, and Denver Frederick, the Host of The Business of Giving. The very first endowed chairs were established by the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, in Athens all the way back in 176 AD. He created one endowed chair for each of the major schools of philosophy. Today, nonprofit endowments are all too rare, especially for social change organizations led by people of color, whose endowments are nearly four times smaller than those of white-led organizations. This, according to a new Bridgespan Group analysis, and here from the Bridgespan Group to discuss it with us are William Foster and Darren Isom.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, it's the most wonderful time of the year... Time for our year end specials!! As our Christmas gift to you, we're sharing our annual political movie picks in the seventh annual round of this not-festive, but definitely fun holiday tradition. This year's slate features a probing documentary, two true-life stories, and a silly drama that thinks it's a serious social commentary. Hang up your stockings, and then sit back with some hot coco as we talk about the movies. And politics. This Thursday, December 23, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Adam's Pick #1: Falling Down (1993). "A middle-aged man dealing with both unemployment and divorce, William Foster is having a bad day. When his car breaks down on a Los Angeles highway, he leaves his vehicle and begins a trek across the city to attend his daughter's birthday party. As he makes his way through the urban landscape, William's frustration and bitterness become more evident, resulting in violent encounters with various people, including a vengeful gang and a dutiful veteran cop." Scotty's Pick #1: On the Basis of Sex (2018). "Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a struggling attorney and new mother who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination." Adam's Pick #2: White Squall (1996). "In 1960, a hardy group of prep school students boards an old-fashioned sailing ship. With Capt. Christopher Sheldon at the helm, the oceangoing voyage is intended to teach the boys fortitude and discipline. But the youthful crew -- among them confident Chuck Gieg, timid Gil Martin and self-satisfied Frank Beaumont - are about to get some unexpected instruction in survival when they get caught in the clutches of a white squall storm." Scotty's Pick #2: What is Democracy? (2018). "This reflection on democracy spans millennia and continents, from ancient Athens' groundbreaking experiment in self-government to capitalism's roots in medieval Italy, and from modern-day Greece grappling the with its financial collapse and mounting refugee crisis to the United States reckoning with its past and the growing gap between rich and poor." Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

Chicago has served as the backdrop for blockbuster films like “The Blues Brothers,” “The Dark Knight,” and “The Break-Up.” But just when did Chicago, sometimes referred to as the “Hollywood of the Midwest,” first become a go-to location for film and TV producers? The answer goes all the way back to the silent film era of the early 1900s when the Essanay Film Manufacturing Co. produced thousands of films from 1907 to 1917 and William Foster debuted “The Railroad Porter” in 1913. Productions shot on location in Chicago ebbed and flowed in the years that followed as Hollywood became a film and television hub. But as of September 2021, a record 15 TV shows were filming here. And with so many things being filmed here, we get asked a lot of questions about what makes certain locations popular for movie shoots? Matt Sigur tracks down some answers for us.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1993 American crime-thriller film "Falling Down" directed by Joel Schumacher and written by Ebbe Roe Smith. The film stars Michael Douglas as William "D-Fens" Foster, a divorced and unemployed former defense engineer, who is attempting to make his way on foot across the city of Los Angeles to the house of estranged wife, Beth Treviño (played by Barbara Hershey), to see his daughter, Adele Foster-Treviño, on her birthday. William "D-Fens" Foster finds himself stuck in a traffic-jam on one of the hottest days of the year, in a car with no air conditioning, who seemingly spontaneously decides to abandon his car and proceed to see his daughter on her birthday by walking the streets of L.A. - however, along the way, among other things, "D-Fens" decides to take his inner frustrations about society out on a convenience store owner, he is accosted by two gang members, he causes a scene for the workers and the customers at a fast food restaurant, and he comes face-to-face with a neo-nazi. On the same day that William "D-Fens" Foster is having one of the worst days of his life, Sergeant Martin Prendergast (played by Robert Duvall) is spending the last day of his police career before retires at his desk and was not expecting there to be anything in the way of serious criminal activity that would lead him away from his desk to have to go out and investigate; however, as the reports of the victims of William Foster's violent progress through Los Angeles start to come to the attention of Sergeant Prendergast, he finds himself on the trail of "D-Fens" in an attempt to discover who he is, why he is doing what he is doing, so that he may be able to stop him before he carries out any more criminal and violent acts that might see more people put in danger. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

In 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, the last slave ship landed in the United States from Africa. The transatlantic slave trade had been illegal in the US since 1808, but Alabama enslaver Timothy Meaher and his friends were so sure they could get away with it that they made a bet and hired Meaher's neighbor, William Foster, to captain a voyage to Africa. Foster and his crew smuggled 110 terrified kidnapped Africans to Mobile Bay, taking them from a homeland they loved to cruel enslavement in the deep South, and changing their lives forever. Joining me in this episode is historian Dr. Hannah Durkin, author of The Survivors of the Clotilda: The Lost Stories of the Last Captives of the American Slave Trade. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons.
