European equity markets are also broadly firmer in early trades, followed a mixed Asian session with Japan and Hong Kong outperforming. Risk sentiment improved following House's narrow approval of Trump's tax bill, though it now faces weeks of Senate debate. Concerns persist over the bill's impact on the U.S. budget deficit and weak demand for long-term bonds in Japan and the U.S. Investors are also awaiting progress on trade negotiations, with only 45 days left in Trump's tariff pause. Mark talks about honoring Goodyear's pioneering legacy — like the iconic Goodyear Blimp, now celebrating 100 years — while recognizing that past success can breed conservatism if left unchecked. At the core of all this change is a new way of thinking about partnerships. Mark discusses the shift from traditional supplier hierarchies to real, transparent collaborations — where information is shared, problems are solved together, and the success of one depends on the success of all.Beyond strategy, Mark shows what leadership looks like at a human level. From walking factory floors to learn how tires are made firsthand to personally rallying 68,000 associates around a simple, bold vision — to be number one in tires and service — he demonstrates that leadership today isn't about commanding from the top. It's about committing yourself fully to the people you serve.Mark shares glimpses of life outside the boardroom—from hiking with his Labradors in Akron's Metro Parks to binge-watching White Lotus to plotting a summer trip across Europe to see Robbie Williams live. These moments aren't distractions from leadership; they're reminders that authenticity—showing up fully human—is part of what makes great leadership real.Themes discussed in this episode:Why legacy companies must unlearn traditional business practices to survive industry disruptionHow EV tire technology and connected mobility are reshaping Goodyear's product strategyRevitalizing a legacy automotive brand: How Goodyear is transforming after 125 yearsBuilding supplier collaboration models for the future of the automotive supply chainMaking accountability and measurable KPIs the foundation of leadership transformationEmbedding innovation across all departments, not just R&D, to stay competitiveWhy reconnecting leadership with shop floor operations drives meaningful cultural changeHow Goodyear is rallying 68,000 global employees around a bold new vision for growthFeatured guest: Mark StewartWhat he does: Mark is the Chief Executive Officer and President of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, joining the company and its Board of Directors in January 2024. For Mark Stewart, becoming CEO and President of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was a lifetime dream realized. Stewart grew up with his father working at the Dunlop Tire plant (owned by Goodyear) and spent his afternoons after school in his grandfather's repair shop surrounded by the car parts he now helps create and sell. “I got a call from Goodyear more than a year and a half ago now. I've been here nine months. It was really a privilege to be asked to enter that process for such an iconic company, and I felt a little bit of a heart string pull with my dad having been in the tire business on the manufacturing side,” Stewart said.Stewart's career has taken him all over the world, to multiple companies with histories that span more than a century, and it has now come full circle. After 45 years with the company, 42 of which in motorsports and 26 in NASCAR, Goodyear's Greg Stucker is calling it a career. Goodyear Tire & Rubber's Director of Racing joins Davey Segal ahead of his retirement (5:55) to discuss how he got involved in motorsports with Goodyear after graduating from Vanderbilt, learning racing on the fly with little prior knowledge and getting thrown into the fire from short tracks to IndyCar. Stucker also dives into some major takeaways from 2024, including the use of wet weather tires and potential future use of them on intermediates, option tires and how soft of a compound they can actually make, what happened at spring Bristol (if they even know, still) and the differences in concrete vs. asphalt as it pertains to tire wear and temperature. He also reminisces about the good and bad days on the job, including the 2008 Brickyard 400 and why that wound up changing things for the better with their processes, tire wars in the 1990s, the famous Goodyear Blimp, gold car and the meaningful styory behind his patented aviators at the track.

''The parade is a wonderful holiday gift to the 3.5 million people who witness it firsthand, as well as the 30 million television viewers worldwide. I feel so lucky that I get to be 'inside' the parade each year, that my dream of living along the route came true.'' - E.A. KAHANE For over 25 years, New Yorker E.A. KAHANE has photographed the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade from her third-floor apartment window on Central Park West at 64th Street. From this special vantage point, Kahane is able to capture with her camera an unrestricted view of the parade as it passes by her window. Her bold and beautiful images document every aspect of the festivities, including the clowns, Broadway stars, floats, marching bands, cheerleaders, cheering spectators, and the biggest stars of them all - the larger-than-life balloons of our favorite characters from TV and film. This fall, just in time for the holidays, Kahane's joyous photographs will be published in book form in Come Join the Parade! (October 15, 2024). She describes the exquisitely designed book as her very own "Miracle on 64th Street" and a book for all ages." Starting on the Upper West Side at 77th and Central Park West, the legendary parade travels down to 6th Ave and 34th Street entertaining a televised and real time audience for the 2.5-mile journey. Come Join the Parade! is Kahane's singular vision of this beloved annual event, and her passion and unbridled enthusiasm is revealed with every page turn. In her essay for the book, Kahane gives insight into her process, sharing, "I never check the parade lineup in advance. I prefer to be surprised. Every year it feels like I'm experiencing the parade for the first time." Placed throughout the book are fun DID YOU KNOW? facts about the parade. One such fact is about Tony Sarg, a German immigrant, Macy's employee, and master puppeteer, who helped design the first Macy's parade. Sarg created the first feline balloon, Felix the Cat, which was produced by Goodyear Tire & Rubber, and collaborated with a young Walt Disney in 1934 to create the first Mickey Mouse balloon. Big balloons became an integral part of the parade in 1927 in partnership with Goodyear and have since become pop-culture icons. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's recent earnings call provided insights into the company's strategic focus and operational initiatives, as stated by CEO Mark Stewart.Stewart emphasized Goodyear's commitment to achieving optimal inventory levels, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and optimizing purchasing and manufacturing processes. He highlighted the adoption of electronic should costing, SKU profitability analysis, and translating these findings into actionable measures on the production floor.Goodyear is responding to shifts in consumer behavior and market dynamics, particularly the rise of low-end imports in Europe, which have grown from 20% to 27% of the market share in the last five years, according to Stewart. This trend has influenced the company's strategic decisions, including recent major restructurings in Europe. The company's operational turnaround is evident in the significant boost in segment operating income, with a substantial contribution from the Americas business segment. This success is partially attributed to the Goodyear Forward transformation plan, which has revitalized the company's market position and financial metrics.Stewart acknowledged the challenges posed by lower-end imports in the U.S. and European markets, as well as the weak fleet industry condition that continues to weigh on the company's business in the Americas and EMEA regions.Goodyear remains committed to executing the Goodyear Forward plan, aiming to substantially improve operating income margin by the end of 2025. The plan encompasses strategies for enhancing facility and operational efficiency, achieving cost-effective material rationalization, and pursuing factory closures in Germany and Malaysia to establish a more effective cost structure.Additionally, the company is focused on expanding its product portfolio with premium fitments for high-end and electric vehicles, broadening the Cooper brand, and amplifying consumer retail performance through consumer insights and price and product mix modifications. While Goodyear acknowledges the challenges it faces, the company's strategic initiatives and operational improvements position it for continued growth and operational excellence, as stated on the earnings call. However, the company's future success will depend on its ability to effectively navigate the evolving market conditions and consumer preferences. This is a public episode. Most of us have experienced sales ‘tactics', and likely we've either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us. Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling ‘salesy' ourselves.  But whether we like it or not, we're all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that's ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers. So … I guess that means you have to ‘suck it up' and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed. Well no … you don't.  That's because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything you've come across before. And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak. Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more. Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company. Whether you're a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, you'll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way.   What you'll discover: Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change.  What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job. How he approached getting clients for his company without having a sales background. How he took a one man band to a business competing with the big consultancies. The problem that Karmic Selling solves for individuals and companies. The three biggest mistakes people and companies are making around this problem at the moment. The key ingredients of the Karmic Selling System and how it counters those mistakes. The first few steps you should take if you want to get started using the karmic Selling philosophy and system. Despite the fact they knew it was hazardous, three boiler manufacturers used asbestos-filled insulation, cement, gaskets, tape and wire in their equipment and failed to warn workers like Pietro of potential health hazards or to offer safe handling methods. A New York City jury found the three manufacturers negligent and assigned 25 percent of the blame for Pietro's wrongful death to each company, along with smaller percentages to seven other manufacturers. The jury awarded a $60 million verdict, including 21 years of compensation to Pietro's son and daughter.    Guest Bios: Dan Blouin Attorney Daniel Patrick Blouin is a shareholder at Simmons Hanly Conroy in the asbestos litigation department. Based in the firm's New York office, Daniel has secured hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of clients diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. In his frequent role as lead trial-attorney and co-counsel, he has litigated against numerous national corporations involved in the manufacture and sale of dangerous products and equipment. He involves himself with every aspect of the litigation process, from client intake to discovery, to motion practice through trial verdict, keeping his clients' needs and rights foremost in his priorities. In 2013, Daniel obtained a $190 million verdict on behalf of two tradesmen who developed mesothelioma decades after their occupational exposure to asbestos. The verdict was the largest consolidated asbestos verdict in New York history. In addition, the $60 million the two cancer patients received ranked among the largest individual damages awarded in a New York asbestos case. In 2014 and 2015, Daniel had unprecedented successes at trial in Delaware, New York City and Upstate New York. He obtained excellent settlements for clients before and during trial and won a jury verdict in a very contentious case in Syracuse, New York. In 2018, Daniel and fellow shareholder Jim Kramer secured a $60 million verdict in New York City against boiler manufacturers A.O Smith, Burnham, LLC, and Peerless Industries, Inc. This historic verdict, secured on behalf of a former laborer, marks one of the highest verdicts for an individual with mesothelioma ever received in New York. Later that year, Daniel and Jim secured a $40.1 million verdict against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. on behalf of a United States war veteran and former naval boiler tender suffering from pleural mesothelioma. This verdict is considered one of the largest compensatory verdicts in New York State. Daniel is a recognized member of the renowned National Trial Lawyers “Top 40 under 40” for 2014 and 2015. Also in 2014 and 2015, the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys named him a winner of its “Top Ten Under 40” award and is a member of the American Bar Association and the New York Bar Association. Read Full Bio   Jim Kramer Attorney Jim Kramer is a shareholder at Simmons Hanly Conroy. He joined the firm in 2017 an accomplished trial attorney, having secured more than $35 million in verdicts for his clients. Jim focuses his practice on complex toxic tort litigation with a specialization in mesothelioma- and asbestos-related cases. His responsibilities include managing cases from inception through trial. Jim knew from a young age that he wanted to be an attorney and devote his life to fighting on behalf of those who had been wronged by others. “I have always been attracted to professions that allow people to help others in need,” he said. “Being a trial attorney allows me to do that. I truly consider myself a zealous advocate, one who genuinely enjoys fighting for those need a voice in their most difficult times.” Jim brings this passion to every case he tries. One of the most important things to him in an attorney-client relationship is the personal connection forged between the two. “I pride myself on my ability to form strong connections with my clients,” he said. “I understand that being involved in a legal case is not ideal, especially at such a rough time in their lives. It's important to me that clients know that I am there for them at any time on any day. In my opinion, being an effective advocate doesn't end with merely hearing about the facts of a client's case. Being able to relate and connect with human beings who need their stories to be told is the most fundamental part of our profession. Even when my representation ends, I find that the bond I form with clients continues.” Jim's devotion to his clients is mirrored by the attention he gives to the details of each case. “I always view every case from the perspective of a possible trial – what facts need to be brought out, where exposures might have occurred, and what legal outcomes we can anticipate and prepare for right from the start,” he said. “I genuinely enjoy the research and preparation that goes into making sure that a legal argument or trial will go as well as it can.” Read Full Bio     Show Sponsors: Legal Technology Services - LegalTechService.com Digital Law Marketing - DigitalLawMarketing.com Harris Lowry Manton LLP - hlmlawfirm.com   Free Resources: Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 1 Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 2

He confesses that he went into engineering because he didn't like to working with people and felt that a career in engineering would find him in the corner of a room with a computer and being left alone to do his work.  It did not quite work out that way. Norbert spent most of his career at Goodyear's Innovation Centers.  Having first been introduced to Six Sigma, his natural gravitation was more towards Lean and the “people” side and skills associated with creating a problem-solving and leadership culture. We then talk about culture change; a topic which appears to be on many people's minds.  But people rarely speak of what they would like to change from what, to what.  They share the phrase “culture change” and just leave it hang there in the air like a cartoon bubble and leave it to others to figure out what was meant; a grand assumption on everyone's part. But Norbert does take the time to explain his ideas with respect to culture change; including the from what, to what.  Fun fact; “Luxembourgish” is a language… About Norbert Majerus Norbert Majerus Norbert was born in Luxembourg and has a Master's Degree in chemistry from the University of Saarlandes, Saarbrucken Germany in 1978.  After graduation and for the next almost 40 years, Norbert works for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, starting as a rubber chemist.  Over the course of his career with Goodyear, he held several roles in the Goodyear Innovation Centers in Luxembourg and in Akron, Ohio and holds over 60 patents and trade secrets in the United States alone.  The role he held the longest and for the final 15 years with the company was that of Lean Champion and is a Master Black Belt. Norbert has taught workshops and given keynotes at many conferences around the world.  Since retiring from Goodyear in 2017, Norbert continues to share with others the wisdom he has gained through his consultancy, his speaking opportunities, and his writings, which include two books; “Lean-Driven Innovation” and “Winning Innovation”. Norbert is also a Shingo Academy Fellow, an Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) Assessor, and serves on the board of the Lean Product and Process Development Exchange (LPPDE).   Do you think there are differences between a lean culture and a culture for lean innovation? Norbert Majerus loved being an engineer in part because he was better with numbers than with people. But when Norbert was entrusted with leading the lean innovation transformation at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, he had to build his skills with people. He's written a new book that shines a light on the human side of a lean innovation culture and what leaders need to learn about themselves to drive positive culture change. He joined me to tell his story. About Norbert Majerus Norbert, born and raised in Luxembourg, has a Master's degree in Chemistry from the Universitaet des Saarlandes, Saarbruecken, Germany, and worked most of the disciplines in the Goodyear innovation centers in Luxembourg and Akron. Norbert has taught workshops and has spoken at many conferences in the United States and other countries. Since retiring from Goodyear in 2017, he continues to share his extensive lean expertise via Norbert Majerus Consulting and as a board member of LPPDE (Lean Product and Process Development Exchange). In 2016, Norbert published his first book, Lean-Driven Innovation, which received the Shingo Research Award. Also in 2016, with Norbert's guidance, the Goodyear R&D organization applied for and received the AME Excellence Award. Norbert published his second book, Winning Innovation in 2022. KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: 0:02:48 Leadership Lessons Learned the Hard Way 0:04:54 The Importance of Lean Culture and People 0:08:12 Leadership Development in a Lean Culture 0:12:25 Innovation at Goodyear 0:16:42 The Benefits of Taking Risks in the Workplace 0:23:03 The Benefits of a Culture of Innovation 0:25:03 The Impact of Education on Psychological Health 0:29:53 The Importance of Culture in Innovation Excellence 0:34:43 Innovation Excellence: The Process of Achieving Success KEY TAKEAWAYS Culture starts with the people Working in a Lean environment reinforced the importance of culture and people. Instead of lean tool adoption, the success of a lean system depends mostly on the activities made, the concepts applied, and organizational change. Every organization develops a culture, whether through a planned or unplanned process. Leaders need to respect people to be successful and it is something most leaders struggle with. When a corporation chooses to implement the lean business model, it cannot assume that the culture would instantly adapt to the new procedures, resources, and ideas. The culture needs to be intentionally guided to meet the demands of the model. A key to lean product development is performing a risk assessment and discharging that risk as early as you can in the process - so that you're not loading risk to the end of a product development project. Video Version https://vimeo.com/748455371 About the Podcast Hello and welcome to another edition of State of Readiness with your host, Joseph Paris. Today I am happy to have Billy Ray Taylor, CEO of LinkedXL and author of "The Winning Link" on my podcast. Billy previously worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 30 years; starting off on the plant floor and retiring as Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion and Executive Director of Commercial, Off Highway, and Support Manufacturing North America. We start the conversation taking a stroll down memory lane. Soon after graduating from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Billy joined Goodyear starting where every recent graduate does; on the floor of the night shift. A life-long learner, Billy recognized early on as he steadily climbed the ranks at Goodyear that he had to "earn the right" to be appointed to the various roles and to retain the right to remain there. This meant that he had to have both the technical skills and also the leadership skills necessary to succeed in the various roles. The conversation comes to diversity and inclusion; with Joseph sharing that, having walked the Earth and worked with many companies located around the world, that the completive advantage of companies based in the States (along with those in Canada and the United Kingdom), is their diversity (regardless of what might be current assumptions). People bring forward what they have learned during their lives. And if everyone on a team has had the same life experiences and brought-up in a homogeneous culture, then everyone will look at a challenge with the same solution set. As the saying goes; "If everyone is thinking the same, then nobody is thinking". But Billy also drove the point that there is a significant difference between "diversity" and "inclusion". Whereas diversity means there are a members on the team with a variety of backgrounds and expertise, inclusion means you use that talent. I guess I never gave the difference too much mind because, as an entrepreneur since 1985, I don't have resources that I would gain but not use. The thought would never occur to me. So it's not about quotas and making sure every race, creed, and sex is included in the picture (like marketing departments are apt to do). It's about understanding that the differences are strengths, but only if you use them. This was a really good, interesting, and valuable conversation. Give a listen...
