This week, we continue to collect members of the Ocean's gang like Infinity Stones, as we find Danny playing a convincing soldier and compelling leading man in a 90s geo-political thriller that feels like a total forgotbuster, despite starring two massive movie stars and launching DreamWorks as a studio. It's 1997's The Peacemaker, directed by Mimi Leder, and starring George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Marcel Iureș, Aleksandr Baluev, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Holt McCallany, Goran Višnjić, and Michael Boatman. One of the Cloondog's early jumps from ER star to silverscreen leading man, this movie is also deeply tied to ER as a production. Clooney unquestionably has the juice however, and the movie's 90s thriller sensibilities -- while not as refined as some of its contemporaries -- still feels like something of a lost art, a type of movie we just don't get enough of these days. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is not available to stream in Canada but can be rented on YouTube and Cineplex. Other works discussed on this episode include The X-Files, Groundhog Day, Source Code, The X-Files: Fight The Future, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, You've Got Mail, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thelma, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, The Beekeeper, The Art of War, The Foreigner, Superman Returns, Strangers on a Train, Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action, The House, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, The Bourne Identity, Clear and Present Danger, Mission: Impossible, Batman & Robin, The Green Hornet, Deep Impact, Armageddon, Pay It Forward, On The Basis Of Sex, The Leftovers, The Morning Show, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Three Kings, The Men Who Stare At Goats, 24, Burn After Reading, Michael Clayton, Out of Sight, Twisters and Legally Blonde. Next week, we're switching things up and going back to Hayley's new VHS stack to talk one of the all-time great westerns: 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's deconstruction of the genre that made him famous and a worthy winner of Best Picture Oscar gold. Unforgiven is streaming on Crave in Canada and Max in the US. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Our Guest today is Wendy Crewson Wendy Crewson was the recipient of a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2015; and the Earle Grey Award, given to fewer than 32 collective recipients since 1986, in recognition by the ACCT and the Canadian Entertainment Industry, for Lifetime Achievement in Television. One of Canada's premier actresses, Wendy Crewson has garnered critical and popular acclaim, as well as multiple awards, for her extensive body of work in film and television. Her resume features more than 100 titles, including credits like: Sarah Polley's indie feature AWAY FROM HER; THE VOW, with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum; the Winnie Mandela biopic WINNIE, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard; THE SANTA CLAUSE trilogy opposite Tim Allen; THE CLEARING, with Robert Redford; Eduardo Ponti's BETWEEN STRANGERS, with Sophia Loren; THE LAST BRICKMAKER IN AMERICA, with Sidney Poitier; BICENTENNIAL MAN with Robin Williams; THE SIXTH DAY with Arnold Schwarzenegger; and of course, her role as Harrison Ford's First Lady in AIR FORCE ONE. Throughout her illustrious career, Wendy has amassed more nominations and awards in Canada than any other actress for portraying real women. These are some of her most wellregarded roles and they include: Sue Rodriguez (who went all the way to The Supreme Court of Canada to fight Doctor Assisted suicide while fighting ALS); “Jane Doe” (who made legal history when she sued the police for negligence after being the fifth victim of a serial rapist and realizing that the police knew details and had done nothing to prevent further rapes); Lorraine Evenshen (who tells the story from her own perspective as the wife of popular CFL star Terry Evanshen, who lost his memory after waking up from a coma caused by a car crash); and finally, Louise Arbour (who as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for both the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda, made history with the first indictment of a sitting head of state, for war crimes, the first conviction for genocide and the first to recognize sexual crimes as crimes against humanity). Wendy starred in five seasons of CTV's hit medical drama SAVING HOPE, for which she won Best Actress in a Featured Supporting Role at the 2013 CSAs. Wendy was also in the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film, ROOM with Brie Larson; and appeared opposite Ellen Page in Patricia Rozema's INTO THE FOREST. Wendy was recently seen in the films KODACHROME, with Ed Harris and Jason Sudeikis; DEATH WISH with Bruce Willis.; and director Mimi Leder's timely feature, ON THE BASIS OF SEX. On the small screen, Wendy recently starred on CBS's hit medical drama, GOOD SAM; CBC's popular series FRANKIE DRAKE; in addition to the Hallmark series, WHEN HOPE CALLS; while also shooting the second season of DEPARTURE for Peacock/Global; and her recurring role on TITANS for HBO Max. Before that, she starred in the CTV/ION series THE DETAIL, for which she was nominated for a 2019 CSA. She also recurred in the AMC series THE SON, opposite Pierce Brosnan; and in THE OCTOBER FACTION for Netflix. Wendy continues to be as busy as ever. She joined the cast of CBC's hit procedural, PRETTY HARD CASES for its final season, while also shooting in the highly anticipated series GRAY, opposite Patricia Clarkson. Next, she appears in the independent films BACKSPOT, from director D.W. Waterson; and SAM opposite Elliot Page. We dived right in and started our conversation with the all-consuming fear of ‘coming out' --and we ended – appropriately, with her sense of belonging in a community and industry that she is so passionate about.

In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff honor Human Rights day in America. Shining a light on issues centuries old, the duo goes in depth with candid thoughts and opinions on the current climate and where everyone can improve. Jeff covers the time honored classic comic book story Days of Future Past from The Uncanny X-Men issues #141 and #142. The realm of Marvel's mutants have always drawn parallels to the civil rights movement, with Professor X and Magneto being heavily influenced by Malcom X and Dr. Martin Luther King. Jeff points out the lack of human rights in both the 1980's setting as well as the 2013 portion of this story, with the heroes being stripped of their rights in both stories based on who they were born as. Did you know? Although the story takes place in a post apocalyptic year 2013, the actual movie adaptation of Days of Future Past was released in 2014. Heather presents her movie second, covering the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic On The Basis of Sex. Heather tells us about her wonder and discovery about the late US supreme court justice, as this movie covers a pivotal potion of Ginsberg's life from the 1950's to 1970's. Paving the way for gender equality and changing the course of history for the better, Heather highlights portion of Ruth's life and the shockwaves that are still being felt to this day. Fun Fact! Ruth Bader Ginsberg founded the Women's Right Project within the ACLU- laying the groundwork for women's right advocacy in America. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as equality, protecting human rights, respect/protect/fulfill, and radical social change. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how X-Men: Days of Future Past, and On The Basis of Sex compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each with some interesting facts and opinions about Human Rights. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy! Heather's Rating of On the Basis of Sex: Super Nice – An extremely informative and inspirational story of an exceptional supreme court justiceJeff's X-Men: Days of Future Past: Super Nice – An amazing and revolutionary story for its time, paving the way for countless time travel stories and also a stand out gem in an already iconic run from writer Chris Clairmount. We are finally back to our old format... with Dhani talking about all of the things she has watched. However, this week, she has to make up for the last 4 weeks of not producing a podcast, so she has a lot to cover! First, she talks about On The Basis of Sex and the pure awesomeness of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Next, Dhani talks about the Netflix movies Someone Great and Unicorn Store. While they were both about the process of growing up and change, she preferred the story of Someone Great more. However both are enjoyable. Moving on to a documentary of YouTubePremium called Boy Band Con: The Lou Pearlman Story. Since Dhani is a superfan of *NSync, she really appreciated the insight gained from this behind the scenes doc. And finally, both John and Dhani watched the Netflix documentary Knock Down the House. This focuses on 4 women running for Congress in 2018 and following their grass roots campaigns. Moving on to TV, Dhani wanted to visit some shows that have ended that she highly recommends. These are Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and You're The Worst. She was happy with the way both shows ended. Then Dhani talks about the second season of Cobra Kai on YouTubePremium and how much she truly loves this show! Being a fan of The Karate Kid, she is truly in heaven watching Johnny and Daniel battle again. Next Dhani talks about the Hulu show The Act. This is the story of DeeDee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The show is good, but she recommends the documentary about this story first, called Mommy Dead and Dearest. We next discuss a new Netflix show called Dead To Me with Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. They are so fantastic in this show and while it wasn't what Dhani thought it was, she loved it and hopes for a second season. Finally Dhani felt the need to address the cancellation of Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix. She loved the show so much and just wanted to let people know that it is still worth checking out what's streaming even though there won't be anymore. In the Actors' Studio we chose Drew Barrymore this week. So we list the movies we love, like, hate, secretly love, haven't seen and want to watch. This week on Pop Culture Confidential we talk about a legend, a role model, and a real bad ass, US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. My conversation is with someone who knows her very well, Daniel Stiepleman. Stiepleman is the screenwriter of the movie “On The Basis Of Sex", based on a major part of her life, and he also happens to be Justice Ginsburgs nephew. We talk about the case at the center of the movie, his aunts first reaction to Mr. Stiepleman wanting to write her story, her notes on his screenplay, and more. "On The Basis Of Sex "is directed by Mimi Leder (The Leftovers) and stars Felicity Jones as Justice Ginsburg and Armie Hammar as her husband Martin Ginsburg. The film premieres in Sweden on International Women's Day , March 8th , and is out in the theaters in the US.

Due to another incredible scheduling snafu by Chris 'What's a spreadsheet' Hewitt, this week's episode of the Empire Podcast features a veritable cavalcade of star guests. There's a Fighting With My Family double bill, as John Nugent talks to that film's director, Stephen Merchant, and its star, Florence Pugh. Then a very tired Chris meets a very jetlagged Jason Clarke, star of The Aftermath, and they end up talking about David O'Leary. In the podbooth, Chris is joined by Nick de Semlyen and James Dyer to discuss the week's movie news, share their battle tips for surviving an Oscars all-nighter, and review Capernaum, On The Basis Of Sex, and Cold Pursuit. Oh, and discuss creme eggs, and the consumption thereof. Enjoy!

As always Morten brings us the latest from our partner cinema, Genesis. Our soundtrack of the week are all the songs nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s Oscars.
Sam Clements and Sarah Cook talk to director Mimi Leder and co-star Armie Hammer about their new film, On The Basis Of Sex. The true story of the pioneering lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones), her struggles for equal rights in law and what she had to overcome in order to become a female US Supreme Court Justice – the second-ever woman in such a position. The film focuses on the first sex discrimination case that Ruth Ginsburg took on, in the early 1970s, when she represented Charles Moritz (Chris Mulkey), a Colorado man looking after his elderly mother who was denied a tax benefit routinely given to women caring for family members. From that moment, Ruth was on a quest to banish sex discrimination in law. This film is about that legal crusade but is also about the woman at home with her children, and a portrait of Ruth’s extraordinary marriage to Marty Ginsburg (Armie Hammer). On the Basis Of Sex tells the story of a fascinating woman, with compelling insights into the arguments of our time.
Ali gives his verdict on Cold Pursuit starring Liam Neeson & Laura Dern and On The Basis Of Sex with Felicity Jones & Armie Hammer and Ace give us some TV recommendations.

It's been a banner week for the gang. Brian has returned from his self-imposed exile and all is well with the world again. 'Cold Pursuit' is first up on the discussion block followed by Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic 'On The Basis Of Sex'. We fill you up with useless Office Space info and chat about Netflix's latest offerings - specifically High Flying Bird - which Dave is sure to eventually watch. Mike also doesn't like Armie Hammer for some reason.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's guest is the brilliant actor Felicity Jones, known for her previous roles in The Worst Witch, Spiderman 2, Rogue One and The Theory Of Everything which won her an Oscar nomination. Her newest role is playing the "Notorious RBG" Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On The Basis Of Sex which is out now.As the Guardian said recently on RBG: "At 85, she remains one of the few progressive hopes on what’s set to become an increasingly Trumpian supreme court and after the documentary RBG was a surprise box office hit this summer, timing couldn’t be better for its narrative counterpart."Ginsburg was one of the few female lawyers at Harvard and her professors were awful and sexist to her. She worked so hard and then became one of only female justice on the Supreme Court and the gender-based laws she has changed means we can live the lives we do, so many parts were deeply moving: her relationship with her daughter, her supportive loving husband. She has spent her life fighting for social radical change and demanded laws be updated. I definitely want to try and channel even 0.1% of her levels of determination. The script was written by RBG's nephew Daniel Stiepleman and it was directed by Mimi Leder. I recommend you going to see it immediately! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The notorious RBG finally gets the biopic treatment. Focusing on a famous gender equality case argued by a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg, ON THE BASIS OF SEX treats us to some of the life story of everyone’s favourite Supreme Court justice.
