Overweight as a child, Mia Kang suffered bullying and a far from ideal childhood. Desperate to lose weight and feel good about herself, Mia began starving herself at the young age of 13. She lost a lot of weight very quickly and this launched her into the modeling industry which continued to destroy her self-esteem and health… until a vacation in Thailand, and her discovery of Muay Thai changed her life forever. In this episode, I get to have an incredibly insightful and authentic conversation (my favorite kind) with Mia Kang. Mia is a Hong Kong–born international model and author of the amazing book, KNOCKOUT. She discusses her story of struggling with her own eating disorder and addiction while working in the modeling industry, and how she unexpectedly found her solution in Indonesia at a Muay Thai gym, starting her on the path of true healing. We get to all the goods: how Mia is developing a new loving relationship with herself and her body (and how you can too!), why we should pay attention to our own internal wisdom, and how coming out of the shadows and into recovery is very, very possible. Mia has graced the pages of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Sports Illustrated, among many others, and has worked with many international brands. She is currently the host of Bravo's Spy Games. She lives in New York City, when she is not in Thailand practicing Muay Thai. Beneath her success is the story of a woman who once lived and died by her weight. In her first book, KNOCKOUT she opens up about her struggles with bullying, anorexia, bulimia, body dysmorphia, drug addiction, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts, and how, in a true life-saving moment, she eschewed normative body standards and, with the help of martial arts, learned to redefine her sense of self-worth. If you want to know more about Mia, you can find her on Instagram, and you can listen to her amazing TED Talk here. I'm also obsessed with knowing all about you, so please follow (and DM!) me on Instagram, Facebook and my website. We're in this together and the journey is going to be so awesome. Virgen, amante, madre, muerta. No importa cuál versión sea verdad.
Mia Kang: From Self Loathing Model to Self Loving Knockout Meet Mia… Health Coach Erin Treloar and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, Mia Kang discuss the reality of her declining mental state at the peek of her career. Once again we learn that beauty, money and fame do not equate to happiness in this raw and […]
Being featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition is, arguably, the most coveted gig to land in the world of modeling and Mia Kang did just that two years in a row. First as winner of SI's 2016 model search and then being named Rookie of the Year in 2017. But the young British-Korean's outward beauty did not reflect her painful internal struggles with insecurity and self-hatred, which led to dangerous eating disorders and thoughts of suicide. A trip to Thailand, however, changed everything when she discovered the martial art Muay Thai and found both her physical and mental power. Since then, Mia has been on a journey towards self-care, self-love and self-confidence, which she shares openly and honestly with her many fans and followers. Mia Kang's metamorphosis from darkness to light is a story of true survival and grit.
Mia Kang is a model of Korean and British descent who launched her career in Hong Kong at the age of 13 and has since travelled the world working with the industry's top photographers, brands and magazines. Listen to Dr. Allie Sharma and Bridget Malcolm in conversation with Mia Kang as they speak on her mental health journey with eating disorders, her suspected COVID-19 case and coping through quarantine. Having grown up bullied and overweight, Mia has struggled with eating disorder symptoms since her early teens and more recently through the incorporation of the sport of Muay Thai in her daily life, she has found a way to cope and gain control over her struggles. Now, healthy and happy, her true passion is to help other women who struggle with similar issues by acting as an advocate for healthy body image, anti-bullying, fitness and female empowerment. Mia holds a Master's Degree in Finance and Financial Law from the University of London and when Mia isn't in front of a camera she can be found perfecting her sport as a Muay Thai fighter with some of the worlds top trainers. It is her mission to prove that it is not about size, but rather about strength, intelligence and confidence. Mia is the host of Bravo's Spy Games, and the author of Knockout (expected release in October 2020). Mia is based in New York City. This interview was recorded on March 22, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic via Anchor remotely. Please note that the contents of Model Mentality are for informational purposes only. We've been fans of Mia Kang for awhile from being in Sports Illustrated to her platform of body positivity. In addition, if you have yet to catch her hosting on BRAVO's Spy Games, we suggest that you catch it On Demand. On today's episode of Bungalow SK, we had the opportunity to literally spar with her a few months ago at the Church Street Boxing Gym in Soho. We talked about the modeling industry, the importance of body awareness in terms of sample sizes, plus sizes and straight sizes, being a Muay Thai fighter and her beauty musts after we trained with her at the gym.
