In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Rachel, a member of the Breaking Up with Sugar community. Rachel shares her journey and her current struggles, dealing with imposter syndrome and the fear of detaching even a little bit from her eating habits. She explains that even the thought of being a little more flexible with her diet makes her experience fear and shame. Rachel shares that weighing and measuring food helps her feel in control, and although she has had overeating episodes, she has been on a successful journey, which makes her even more afraid of falling off the wagon. The key question here is: how to feel safe when you reach a certain level of progress? Perfectionism can be tricky, even more for someone trying to heal their relationship with food. Molly encourages Rachel to expand her identity as someone trying to heal instead of someone trying to follow the plan perfectly. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “The only anesthetic for shame is going to be food. It's a profound rejection. It's literally what the brain is trying to protect us from completely.” “Funny thing about diets: they don't take into account the human spirit, they don't take into account biodiversity, and they don't take into account even the healing of the endocrine system.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this solo episode of What You're Craving, Molly gives her opinion on a topic that has been getting some attention lately: injectables for weight loss. First and foremost, we need to acknowledge that it is a medical intervention, and it needs to be treated that way. And guess what? There is nothing wrong with asking for medical support to lose weight. On the other hand, it won't help if the person taking it stops paying attention to their eating habits and neglecting their health. Cultivating healthy habits, having a balanced diet rich in protein and fiber, and exercising still play an essential role in this process. Molly invites you to see injectables for weight loss as another tool in the toolbox, not a magic wand that will solve all the problems. And if you are considering making use of this tool, don't forget to weigh the pros and cons, and most importantly, don't treat it like a quick fix. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “Maybe it's a beautiful thing to get some help. Maybe we don't really know what we're talking about and maybe we need to set aside all of these prejudices that diet culture has put into us that the only way it works is through hard work.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Jean Ferrari, a member of the Breaking Up with Sugar community. Jean details what it was like to join the group, what led her to make this decision, and how she could identify that her eating habits were part of something related to an eating disorder. Jean wasn't sure if she had an eating disorder or even if the program was a good fit for her. At one point, she decided to join the community nonetheless. She realized that something was off when she started noticing unusual habits like binging, eating unhealthy foods daily, and using alcohol as a coping mechanism. When Jean realized that the program was a real deal and was a considerable investment for her, she decided to take the program more seriously and try to get helpful insights from the other participants. Even on vacation, Jean followed the plan and connected with the group. Consistent progress is way better than perfection. Tune in to learn more! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects again with clinical psychologist Dr. Alisa Kriegel. Today, they discuss the importance of self-care in regulating the nervous system and how to identify the tools to get into a calmer state. There is sometimes a misconception that self-care is an act of selfishness but in reality, is an act of self-love. Being present and enjoying the moment is one of the most important exercises to calm the nervous system. But it's a practice. And as with every practice, it takes time. An important component of this topic that needs to be addressed is multitasking. Multitasking has a considerable impact on the nervous system, and it makes us uncomfortable, even if we don't realize it. People do many things at once due to various reasons, but the main one is fear of not being productive. We are inherently used to chaos, and sometimes we forget to take a break, despite being extremely important for the nervous system. Tune in to learn more! If you are in the process of healing your relationship with food, you might have periodic thoughts that say: "Why is this taking so long?” or “Why don't I feel better yet?” These are all valid questions, but there is this misconception that we won't feel good until we reach the finish line. There is no finish line. Healing your relationship with food - or whatever you are working on - is a journey, and you need to start enjoying it. In this solo episode of What You're Craving, Molly encourages you to quit the impatience and let go of these racing, unsafe thoughts. These thoughts are provoked by perfectionism, are rooted in fear, and reflect what might not have worked in the past. Molly shares a few tips to overcome these beliefs: practice gratitude and be thankful for the good little things you have in life and how far you have come. Be of service to others who are also going through tough times and have their own battles to overcome. Accept that these overwhelming thoughts are just thoughts. Episode Quotes “When you're trying to make a big change, history suggests that you're not going to do it. Unfortunate truth: the best indicator of future performance is past performance.” “Whatever it is you're struggling with, you're in a relationship with it.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. Join this episode of What You're Craving as Molly chats with Michelle Shapiro about how the nervous system affects our relationship with food. Michelle Shapiro is a Registered Dietitian with an integrative and functional approach, and today she explains more about this concept and why it is so important to understand this mind-body connection. Michelle shares that when someone comes to her with symptoms of a chronic illness, the first thing she does is stabilize the environment in which that person lives instead of jumping to adjusting the person's diet or eliminating their favorite foods. That is what she did with Molly. For instance, she encouraged Molly to focus on breathing techniques and less screen time to treat her symptoms. Michelle also talks about how the mind and the body are intimately intertwined and that food is just a component of how they correspond. Also, sometimes the nervous system can impact different diagnoses, such as binge-eating disorder. On that note, Michelle explains that our brain wants short-term results instead of long-term results, which is why binge eating makes so much sense for many people. Tune in to learn more! Episode Quotes “Food is not the game. Food is a piece of the puzzle, and it can be extremely healing or extremely instigating.” “Binge-eating is caused by physical symptoms just as much as it's caused by mental conversations.” “There is no healing if your nervous system is not regulated.” Connect with Michelle Shapiro Podcast: Quiet the Diet Website: www.michelleshapirord.com Instagram: @michelleshapirord Connect with Molly Sign up for CAMP SELF CARE - find what may be the missing link for you to be living the life you deserve - learn more at: mollycarmel.com/camp-self-care Join my mailing list for info (+ discount!) on our SELF LOVE CAMP coming in August, my Sunday Love Letter, and a free mini masterclass: mollycarmel.com/signup You can purchase the Breaking Up with Sugar course here: mollycarmel.com/buws Become a part of the Breaking Up with Sugar FB Group: facebook.com/groups/buwsbook Come hang with me on social media! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes back Felicia from the Breaking Up with Sugar Community. She shares her current struggles in healing her relationship with food at the same time she is being treated for cancer. According to Felicia, the community has been helpful, with people caring for and checking up on her. Felicia also shares that on numerous occasions, people would offer her solutions to help her quit the addiction, but she explains it does not work like that. An addicted person often thinks that what works for others will not work for them because they are "beyond that point”. Or they are too afraid that that specific solution will, in fact, work, so they back away. In addition, Felicia shares more about the obstacles of someone treating cancer and treating addiction at the same time. She explains that it is common to feel like you “have the right” to give in to random cravings just because you are going through tough times. However, she encourages people that may feel this way to not give up. Episode Quotes “I haven't had a chance to really have this big, beautiful life without the food in the way. And I want that for myself.” “The truth is life is going to happen - the good stuff and the bad stuff - and it is going to pass. And the reality is as long as I am breathing, and I take another breath, and I stay sugar and flour free, I have an opportunity to be a participant in my own life. I don't have to be a victim.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, you will listen to Leanne's story and her journey so far. Molly and Leanne talk a lot about the idea of being honest with the people around us, such as our friends and family who are supportive of our journey. When we are on a mission to quit an addiction - especially food addiction - we might think that sharing our struggles with others will make them leave. Leanne is living proof that is not the case. It is important to be open with people we trust. But it is also essential to tell the truth to people you know will accept it, no matter what. On another topic, Leanne talks about the importance of having a community, a group of people she can trust - like the Breaking Up with Sugar group. Episode Quotes “I went to the group, I did the homework, I listened, and read, and really immersed myself in it but at the same time I realized that was this part of me that was just hanging on for dear life to my previous ways.” “If we are trying to establish safety and if you were to drop a bunch of weight like you would do on a quick-fix diet, I would actually think that would be rather disorienting. If you think about the weight as a shield.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. After breaking up with sugar and flour for four months, Sara still needs to accept that the little voice urging her to binge on something will still show up after her meals. After 25 years of having an unhealthy relationship with food, four months of recovery is not that much time if you think about it. Discomfort after eating is more than normal: it is expected. In this episode of What You're Craving Podcast, Molly welcomes Sara to discuss her journey with the Breaking Up with Sugar community. Sara shares this sort of emotional urge to keep eating after her meals (specifically breakfast), and Molly advises her to try to shift the script a little. What is uncomfortable can also be exciting. When someone is going through some kind of change in life, especially when it comes to healing food or alcohol addictions, it's easy to get caught up in perfectionism. We may feel like everything has to be perfect and easy, and no setbacks or unpleasant feelings are allowed. It is not going to be like that. It is a process, and creating too many rules and conditions in order to feel that you're doing an amazing job won't help. Episode Quotes “When we take the cravings so seriously, it's when they become problematic.” “Shame is protecting us from rejection.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly connects with Lindsey Pearson. Lindsey is a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher (MBSR), a Registered Yoga Teacher, as well as a Certified Workplace Mindfulness Facilitator from Mindful Leader. She has led international workshops and is the author of the Distraction Detox: A Self-Care Workbook. Lindsey talks about the impact that practices like meditation and mindfulness had on her healing journey. Lindsey went through hard times a few years ago - relationship issues, losing her dream job, and on top of that, the pandemic - and she saw herself having to handle her biggest fears all at once. At that time, she had to make a decision: to relapse or to shift her perspective. These trauma wounds inspired her to create her company and to help others experience more peace and feel happier, even when dealing with setbacks. In addition, Molly and Lindsey discuss guilt and how it plays an important role in our journey to change and how self-compassion is the best way to live daily life. Tune in! In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes clinical psychologist Dr. Alisa Kriegel. Dr. Alisa shares her perspective on two relevant topics that have a lot of evidence nowadays: how our childhood wounds impact our relationships and how the nervous system maintains balance in the body. According to Dr. Alisa, in our relationships, we tend to repeat the same patterns we learned during our childhood. All the lessons, the emotions, and the wounds can be a significant part of how we interact with our partners. The key here is to learn to heal those wounds first instead of focusing on fixing the external world around us. When it comes to regulating our nervous system, it is fundamental to identify when we are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or triggered. By being aware of it, we can start regulating the nervous system with a few techniques. Dr. Alisa also explains the differences between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system and the reactions we experience when we become anxious, known as fight or flight reactions. Episode Quotes “I'm a big believer that you have to understand what happened in the past. Not to blame it, but to learn from it, to understand yourself, and to use it, because that's going to dictate what comes up for you.” “Ideally, in a relationship, you can be co-regulators for each other, but what that requires is first recognizing your own nervous system responses and what helps you to feel soothed.” Related Links Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory by Deb Dana Connect with Dr. Alisa Kriegel Website: www.alisakriegel.com Podcast: Let's Talk about Sex, Really Connect with Molly LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - Join my mailing list for a free mini masterclass: mollycarmel.com/minimasterclass You can purchase the Breaking Up with Sugar course here: mollycarmel.com/buws Become a part of the Breaking Up with Sugar FB Group: facebook.com/groups/buwsbook Come hang with me on social media! Join this week's episode as Molly talks about how women can break free from the unrealistic beauty standards imposed by diet culture. Women of all ages suffer every day, trying to achieve unrealistic goals. These goals are not their own; they result from decades and decades of what society thinks is right. During this process, we start to feel guilt, frustration, and a sense of hatred for our own bodies. We tend to hold on to the wrong beliefs - and the crazy diets. How do we break free from this cycle? How do we drop the scarcity mentality and embrace the part of us that wants to heal? How do we stop believing in a culture so ingrained in our minds? If you don't have answers to these questions, this episode is for you. It's time to regain control of your own self-worth and self-esteem. Healing takes courage, but believing you can is the most important first step. Episode Quotes “We are really stuck in this abusive relationship with diet culture, that is draining all of our energy.” “Choice is the most powerful tool around. We choose to forgive, we choose to get out of this relationship… imperfectly, but we do it.” About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. Join this episode of What You're Craving as Molly connects with Dr. Mark Horowitz. Dr. Mark is a Clinical Research Fellow in Psychiatry North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), and today he talks about depression, the different symptoms and treatments of this condition, antidepressant withdrawal, and the side effects of discontinuing it too quickly. With a background that very much matches his line of study today, Dr. Mark has been researching how depression works, what the causes and life experiences associated with it are, and the many health conditions produced by medication withdrawal. Also, according to him, the idea that depression is merely a chemical imbalance is a misconception. Dr. Mark explains that everyone has gone through some depressive state in their lives, and everyone has or will have depression to some degree. This condition can be caused when our emotional needs are not being met, and everyone is susceptible to this situation. Tune in to understand more about antidepressant withdrawal, the placebo effect, the correlation between depression and weight loss, and much more. Episode Quotes “You hear these people that have perfect lives but then depression just drops in their lap… I have never met such a person. To feel shame and fear for whatever reason is not an easy process. Both feelings are not simple feelings to live with, especially when we know what it feels like to live without them. But what to do when we feel sad, frustrated, and overwhelmed by something that happened to us, leading to feelings like shame and fear? In this episode of What You're Craving Podcast, Molly talks about a personal matter that has been very challenging for her. Molly shares how she has been responding to this situation, how she has been getting the help needed, and how she was confronted by an old version of her - a rebellious version - throughout this process. When we worry too much about things we can't control, we give our power away. We adopt a victim mentality that simply does not serve us or help to solve the problem. So the initial steps not to let shame and fear take over are: recognizing these feelings, not reacting to them immediately, and having compassion for yourself. Episode Quotes “I was so busy screaming for everybody to help me that I stopped the behaviors that help myself.” “Sometimes I have to get really, really quiet in order to learn the lessons that I need to learn in this life.” Related Links Michelle Shapiro, RD (michelleshapirord.com) - Functional Nutritionist Wendy Swanson (wendyswanson.com) - Acupuncturist About Molly Carmel Molly is a leading addiction and eating disorder therapist and the founder of the BeaconProgram, which offers individual and group solutions to help people break free from their destructive relationships with food and dieting. Caleb Campbell is a dynamic keynote speaker, coach, and mental health advocate known for his authentic and transformational message on high-capacity leadership, whole-person success, and emotional well-being. In this episode, Caleb shares more about his story, childhood, and how he always had that itch to seek more in life. We all tend to live adulthood as a reflection of our childhood, and Caleb's story is no different. Ever since he was a young boy, he looked for his mom's approval, and that eventually made him feel pressure to be the best in all areas of life. Growing up, he also felt the need to establish some boundaries for all his relationships - something we all can relate to. Caleb talks about difficult moments when he used to feel self-hatred, disempowerment, and the need to sustain a happy external image when, in reality, he was falling apart inside. After identifying all these signs and red flags, Caleb sought therapeutic help, which changed his life and gave him new perspectives. With this guidance, he could choose himself over others and find inner rest. Episode Quotes "Moving our life forward is not by doing more, is not by hustling more, is not by holding on tighter; it's actually learning to let go.” “There is no healing without feeling safe. It's hard to heal when you are living in an environment where you're barely getting by.” “I was hating myself because I knew the way I was doing life was working against me.” Key Highlights Caleb always had the intuitive knowledge that there is more in life. Caleb started therapy to heal childhood wounds. The importance of boundaries and not carrying our parents' burdens. Listen to your own intuition and listen to your own body. Caleb shares how he was able to recognize he needed therapy help. Choosing yourself instead of choosing others. Caleb details his connection with God and spirituality. Caleb's final message: take the time to grieve whatever you need to. If something we engage with is not empowering us, it's not worth it. Are you struggling to break free from your addiction to food? Do you turn to food as a coping mechanism during tough times? In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly chats with Felicia, a current member of the Breaking Up with Sugar community and the All In Intensive coaching group. Felicia is a fighter and survivor of trauma who shares her inspiring story of transformation and regaining control of her life. For years, Felicia battled with her weight and tried various diets, including intermittent fasting, Weight Watchers, and low-carb approaches, but nothing seemed to work. She realized that food had become her go-to coping skill when the world felt out of control. Even when she tried to fix things with a relationship, her food issues worsened. Feeling suicidal, desperate, and with children to care for, Felicia knew she had to make a change. She borrowed money from a friend and joined the All In program, where she learned to set self-determined goals and embrace a beginner's mindset, despite her initial resistance. Through the guidance and support of the All In community and her coach, Molly, Felicia was able to redefine herself and begin to let go of the shame and guilt she felt about her addiction. Although Felicia acknowledges that her journey has not been without its challenges, she is now 66 days without sugar or flour and has seen a significant improvement in her blood sugar levels. Felicia plans to continue her growth journey by taking another round of the All In coaching program. Key Highlights The role of grief and shame in Felicia's journey Felicia's story of joining Breaking Up With Sugar & All In Tools Felicia used to stop self-harm Addressing cognitive distortions and qualifying the positives Felicia talks about her goals for forgiveness and redefining herself Felicia talks about Feelings vs. Facts Episode Quotes: “Recovery is not linear, but my brain wants it to be linear so when it's not linear, it turns lemonade back into lemons.” “I have tools. Having tools isn't my problem. The problem is when I get dysregulated, I forget the tool box even exists… Why am I okay today? It's because I used all of my tools and I had a huge support network that All In allowed me to build. I just needed somebody I trusted to tell me it was going to be okay.” Connect with Molly: LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - enrollment for ALL IN INtensive Coaching is OPEN! Krista Joy Palmer is a health coach and advocate for essential oils who has a unique story of healing herself with the help of plants. Despite suffering from autoimmune symptoms that confined her to bed, hospitals, and wheelchairs for years, Krista was able to heal herself and rediscover her passion for healing others. In this episode of What You're Craving, Krista shares her journey to healing and how she now travels to teach others about the power of essential oils. She and Molly also recount a story of how Krista used her essential oils to cure an allergic reaction that Molly had on the day they met. It took Krista four years to receive a diagnosis for her autoimmune illness, during which time she had to balance raising her teenage children while dealing with her symptoms. Despite this, Krista continued to work as much as she could, focusing on what she could do rather than what she couldn't. When doTERRA approached her to help build their business and offered her a new solution for her healing journey, Krista decided to give it a try. Through doTERRA supplementation, she was able to heal more rapidly and went on to continue her work of sharing the tools and natural solutions that have helped her with others. Krista's objective is not to fix or heal anyone independently. Instead, she aims to establish an environment where those with chronic health challenges can enable their bodies to heal naturally. She believes that slowing down and simplifying our lives can aid in our health journey as it did with hers. This episode is perfect for anyone struggling with chronic illness, looking for natural healing methods, or simply interested in learning more about the power of essential oils. Tune in now to discover the gentle power of essential oils with Krista Joy Palmer. Episode Quotes: “I don't fix anybody. I don't heal anybody. When we feel like a victim of our circumstances, we often forget that we have choices. In this episode, Molly encourages you to bring yourself back to the present moment by reminding yourself that even if you feel stuck, you always have choices. Some situations can feel so painful that it seems impossible to actually have a choice in the matter, but you always do. Bad things may happen to you, but there are infinite ways that you can respond to them. Your choices are to solve the problem, change your feelings about the problem, tolerate it, stay miserable, or make the problem worse. This isn't all to say that it will be an easy road, but there is tremendous power in knowing that you don't have to just lie down and let the pain take over. This is your season of taking your power back. If a problem arises that you truly don't have control over, you still have the power to change how you feel about it. For so many of us, we have been bombarded with failure experiences, shame responses, and rejections. If you have been in these cycles, your first response is most likely to play dead, but a much more powerful option is to work to feel better about the problem. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly wants you to know that there is so much more in your control than you think. You never have to feel like a victim in your circumstance. It is time to take your power back because if any problem coming up causes you to fall over and be a victim, there is so much of your power that is just roaming out there. Molly wants you to get it back. At the age of 30, Christine was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, which forced her to learn how to eat all over again. She tried various diets but found that counting things like calories or carbs only led to obsession. This is a common issue with restrictive diets that focus on counting calories, macros, or other factors. These diets may work for weight loss in the short term, but they often lead to rebound weight gain and a negative relationship with food. Christine eventually discovered Molly's book and decided to follow the plan Molly outlines in it. After quitting sugar for only two weeks, Christine noticed improvements in her skin, weight, and sleep. The benefits only multiplied as time went on, and Christine even reports having much less stress and a better relationship with herself and her family. Christine has been imperfectly sugar-free for three years now. Christine discusses the self-care routines, support system, and motivation behind her personal transformation. This conversation serves as a valuable reminder that there is no universal formula for well-being and that treating ourselves with kindness and empathy yields the most positive outcomes. Episode Quotes: “I always have to go back to my why. There is a reason why I am doing this.” “You just have to put one foot in front of the other, wait, be kind to yourself. Be patient because it's not a quick fix. In this episode of What You're Craving, Molly chats with Dr. Mary Claire Haver, a board-certified OB/GYN and Certified Culinary Medicine specialist. As the creator of the nutrition program, The Galveston Diet, and author of the book by the same name, Dr. Haver has made it her mission to help women navigate the challenges of aging with a comprehensive approach to nutrition and wellness. Lucy describes intenSati as an ecstatically blissful practice that allows individuals to set intentions for their lives without judgment. Lucy shares her personal transformation through intenSati, which began when she believed that weight loss was the key to achieving her goals. Lucy goes on to explain that intenSati is not just about positivity, but rather about an awareness of what is present and a choice for what will come next. By becoming more self-aware through intenSati, Lucy was able to change her behavior to be in alignment with the person she wanted to be, without force or coercion. Today, Lucy is the owner and CEO of intenSati and leads her own classes, helping others to cultivate joy and self-awareness in their own lives. Lucy also discusses her experience with grief after the founder of intenSati and her former business partner, Patricia, passed away. She explains that this experience taught her the importance of prioritizing what is most important in life. Her experience with grief also highlights the importance of prioritizing what truly matters in life and knowing that life goes on, even in the face of loss. Lucy's journey through intenSati is an inspiring reminder of the power of intentional practices to create lasting change in our lives. If you're looking to cultivate more joy and self-awareness, this episode is a must-listen. Tune in to discover the transformative potential of intenSati and the valuable lessons Lucy shares from her personal experiences. Molly sits down with Laura, a longtime member of the Breaking Up with Sugar Facebook community, to share her experience posting about her journey for 100 consecutive days. She realized through the process that there's actually a much more powerful way to achieve her goals, and it has nothing to do with her strong desire to moderate her cravings nor with the willingness to “challenge” herself to overcome those cravings. In fact, she learned that the ideal of moderation and the concept of challenging oneself may be doing more harm than good in the long term. Laura struggled with an eating disorder in her 20s which led to a binge-restrict cycle that lasted for the next two decades, up until she came across the Breaking Up with Sugar community. All that time, a lot of money was spent at bulk food stores, specifically in the candy aisle. Laura often skipped breakfast, had a pauper's lunch, and ended up devouring a boatload of sweets for dinner. It eventually dawned on her that she was using sugar as a coping mechanism in order to numb herself to the various challenges and pressures she faced throughout her career as an athlete. As the Covid-19 pandemic rolled around, Laura became determined to change her behaviors. However, unable to find a suitable support community, she jumped from group to group in an attempt to get her eating disorder under control. Unfortunately, her perfectionist mindset prevented her from committing to any of the programs she was offered. And it didn't help that the majority of the nutrition plans she was encouraged to follow were incredibly restrictive, labeling foods as “good” or “bad”, and did not take lifestyle and preferences into account. Molly and Laura discuss the blinders that most people tend to put on themselves, whether or not they realize it when they decide to go all-in on their wellness journey. Oftentimes we conflate our desire to moderate our cravings with our actual ability to do so, and we end up doing a “fake all-in”, ultimately disappointing ourselves in the end. In fact, moderation is better as a tool in your kit along your path to breaking up with sugar, rather than the endpoint. It's so much more important to be gentle, mindful, and loving with yourself, and to take things as slowly as you need to. Taking that pressure off of yourself says Molly, will piss your addiction off like nobody's business. A vulnerable state of wanting to lose weight can make diet culture messaging enticing, and we are more likely to follow whatever diet plan promises to deliver the results we want. It is important to realize that no single meal plan or approach will work for every individual. No matter what diet culture myths are being propagated, there is no quick fix, and committing to your well-being in the long term will lead to a much happier existence. Nutrition coach Mike Millner shares his compelling story about growing up as an athlete and identifying as one throughout his life until he became overweight in college and began an obsession with dieting and exercise. Mike developed orthorexia, which is an obsession with eating "clean" to the point that it can harm your health and well-being. Like many who suffer through this, Mike thought that if he were lean enough, he would be happy, but the lifestyle he adopted actually distanced him more from the activities that made him happy. While this restrictive way of life is highly addictive, Mike was able to lift himself out of it and treat his body with more love. In this episode, Mike discusses how he changed his behavior, examined all the beliefs he'd held about himself since childhood, and dug deep to pinpoint the reason for his desire to lose weight. Rather than viewing his past "failures" negatively, he viewed them as learning experiences and feedback about what works for him, what doesn't, and the tendencies he had toward food and exercise. Many people will relate to Mike's story because it demonstrates the importance of finding out what works for you individually and being aware that you have a forever relationship with yourself. As Mike's story shows, adopting a growth mindset and committing to your well-being long-term can make feeling good in your body a reality for years to come. Episode Quote: “What do you believe about yourself? What is your internal operating system? We all have this ‘I am' statement that we've developed from childhood that tells us what we think about ourselves, and oftentimes we don't even know where it came from.” - Mike Millner Connect with Mike: Instagram @coach_mike_millner Website: neurotypetraining.com Connect with Molly: LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - but most importantly, there are a few slots left to CHANGE YOUR LIFE in the ALL IN Intensive Coaching Program beginning February 5th - sign up for a 15 minute strategy session with me :) Take a look at the AMAZING OWN YOUR WORTH EXPERIENCE I'm participating in on MARCH 31st - ownyourworthexperience.com There are also LOTS of other offerings - Fireside chats, intenSati classes all on mollycarmel.com - including February's LOVING YOURSELF Fireside on Feb 15! Molly is joined by Leanne, a member of the “Breaking Up with Sugar” Facebook community to engage in a coaching session and take a deeper dive into her relationship with food. Usually, this journey goes one of two ways: we heal our relationship with food, and then other parts of our lives that need healing are revealed, or we work on other aspects of our personal development first, and then we shift our attention to food. For Leanne, she shares that the last few years have been challenging, and as she continues to do the inner work on herself, she struggles with her relationship with food. Leanne wants to focus on her health so that ultimately, she can get back to doing things that she truly loves in life. Although she knows what is in her best interest foodwise, the cycling of binging and restricting continues. Molly explains that this is because our brain wants us safe, and not happy, and there is safety in doing what is familiar. For someone that has experienced disordered eating or had a lifetime of binging and restricting, that is what our brain knows and it is predictable. Molly and Leanne take a deep dive into the underlying and subconscious reasons for Leanne's relationship with food and why she feels shame and the need to hide her habits. Although it might be obvious to us that binges have negative repercussions and ultimately steal joy, we have to acknowledge that they have served us in some way throughout our lives. That is why we get stuck in the cycle of clinging to these repetitive patterns and thoughts that don't serve us, but it's time to get some new thoughts. Some of our thoughts can be so toxic and we don't even challenge them. They can be completely untrue, yet we cling to them and allow them to be in charge. We get into a victim stance that feels safe and forget that we have choices, but the truth is that we can make a conscious choice to do what is best for us, and it starts with awareness. Episode Quote: “So many toxic thoughts go unchallenged that are not true, and something about the binging forever has made us really be victims to the binging and forget that we have choices.” - Molly Carmel Key Highlights Sometimes releasing certain food habits reveals other parts of us that need healing Leanne shares about her relationship with food which she ultimately knows isn't in her best interest When we restrict, we are setting up our body for binging Underlying reasons for binging Understanding the function of victimhood Connect with Molly: LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at mollycarmel.com - but most importantly, if the podcast resonated with you today and you want to join the ALL IN Intensive Coaching Program there are still a few slots waiting for YOU! There is a profound wisdom inside of us that knows exactly what to do and who we are, but that wisdom is often overshadowed and drowned out by the chaos around us. We live in a world full of noise and are constantly bombarded with different messages. Even in the health and wellness realm, with messages around biohacking and healing, it can get overwhelming and difficult to discern the messages that are coming from culture and those that are coming from within our divine wisdom. Molly's guest today is here to explain that it really isn't that complicated. Manoj Dias shares his powerful story and background of being born into a Buddhist family and raised with spirituality. As an adult, he found himself operating out of anxiety and high stress, which lead to sleep disorders and various medications. After finding a meditation class, he got back in touch with his spirituality and learned to observe his thoughts instead of internalizing them. Through this, Manoj found freedom and wants the same for you. In this episode, you will hear Manoj's peaceful and calming message about why learning to get quiet with ourselves is so important. So many people are constantly looking for the next thing that will finally make them happy, when the truth is, it is important that we learn to embrace what is in this moment. A lot of meditation is appreciating what we have instead of looking for the next thing to make us feel whole. This isn't to say that we can't desire change because of course we can, but we need to realize that those things won't make us happy, it is who we become in the process. Manoj also explains the important distinction that we are not our thoughts and our suffering. This feeling of being free from our thoughts can come from the powerful practice of meditation. Episode Quotes: “Meditation isn't about feeling good. It's about being free.” - Manoj Dias Key Highlights Learning how to communicate and discern the messages between culture and ourselves Manoj's take on perfectionism Manoj explains the idea that we are not our thoughts and our suffering We live in an anxious time but we don't have to respond the way the world wants or expects us to Is there a way to befriend our negative thoughts? Today's podcast guest is Elisa, a member of Molly's All In Intensive coaching program. In this episode, Elisa talks with Molly about how she finally let go of diet culture's obsession with quick results and developed a sustainable relationship with food that is free of chaos and fear. With coaching, self-determination, and a supportive community, Elisa's relationship with food has changed from obsessive and out of control to quiet and peaceful. She shares how the support of the group and professional guidance allowed her to beat the resistance she had towards changing her relationship with food and recovery. She will also discuss how this change led her to develop a more compassionate relationship with herself. Getting into a peaceful relationship with yourself and food is important because it's a relationship you'll have for the rest of your life. Change doesn't happen overnight, despite what diet vultures say. The reality is that change affects everyone differently and at different times, but learning how to feel your best with food and your health long-term is worth the effort. Elisa is a beautiful example of the long-lasting change that can occur when we honor our truths and proceed at our own pace. Episode Quotes: “If you lean in and say, you always have to be in a relationship with food, then what's the rush? If you want it to be lasting, you can't be scaring yourself with all this ultimatum shit that we do.” - Molly “I'm learning how to live life on life's terms without turning to the food, and it's actually been a lot more than that. I know how to go figure out an emotion now.” - Elise Key Highlights: What has changed in Elisa's relationship with food and herself The guiding principles Elisa followed to achieve true change How Elisa overcame the resistance to change her relationship with food How Elisa's compassion for herself has been strengthened through this process What led Elisa to add professional guidance to help her reach her goals What inspired Elisa's commitment to herself and her dedication to the program What has changed the most for her since she completed the program How Elisa sustains her progress on a daily basis LOTS of EXCITING stuff going on over at https://mollycarmel.com - but most important, if the podcast resonated with you today and you want to join the ALL IN Intensive Coaching Program, use the code ALLIN11 for 11 percent off from 1/11-1/17/2023! Given this time of year and the fact that diet culture vultures are swarming, Molly wants to help you to access your wisdom so you don't fall victim to the marketing. You don't need to make a choice out of urgency and anyone that tells you otherwise, does not have your best interest at heart. Relationships with coaches are transactional and they should be working for you and wanting what is truly best for you, but that is not always the case. To heal your relationship with food, you don't have to spend one more minute with someone that isn't serving you. Molly emphasizes that your love for yourself has to be greater than you fear of disappointing someone, such as a coach or even a family member that wants you to eat something that doesn't align with you. Molly's goal in this episode is to help you be informed and prepared, and not fall into the traps that are abundant right now. If you fall into the trap, Molly isn't going anywhere but she provides guidance on how to not fall into them and how to choose someone to work with that will help you align with your highest self. If you need help, there are so many good people that can help you, but the problem is a lot of people are treating from their trauma. You want to make sure that the healer is healed themselves before they can help you. Molly wants you to be more thoughtful about where you are getting help and know that you can fire people that are not making you feel good about yourself and your relationship with food. Diet culture is at it's height today and it's here to take your money and keep you trapped in the diet cycle. One criteria to ask yourself when looking for someone to help is: “Are they looking to keep me in their cycle forever?” The goal should be to give you the tools you need to make it a sustainable lifestyle that doesn't have you feeling deprived and miserable. After the holidays people are feeling bad about their food decisions, and the diet culture vultures will say they are here to save you, but you need a guide, not a savior. Listen in to hear how to find the right guide for you. Episode Quotes: “I want you to feel free to fire someone that doesn't make you feel good about yourself.” “Validation isn't about kindness, it is about truth, and there are kind ways to tell the truth.” Key Highlights Your relationships with coaches is transactional and they should work for you Molly's criteria for looking for help How real and sustainable change works Don't fall for marketing that feels urgent and uses language such as “only one spot left!” Molly invites you to join Intensati and choose yourself Connect with Molly: Happy 2023!!! With January 1 right around the corner, that means the diet culture vultures are coming out and are ready to prey on people that want a quick fix for weight reduction. This episode with Michelle Shapiro will help arm you so that you don't fall into that and know that you are in power of your own healing. Molly admits to having a compromised relationship with nutritionists due to most of them believing that a “one-size-fits-all” approach of intuitive eating is the answer when in reality, it is more complex than that. Michelle Shapiro is an integrative/ Functional Registered Dietitian and Patient Advocate and she agrees that the issue with the intuitive eating movement and diet culture, in general, is that it is not focusing on the specific needs of an individual. While the principles of Intuitive eating are based on great intentions, that doesn't mean that it will work for everyone. It gets tricky when we try to discern between intuition and emotion, and a lot of us are unable to make the distinction. For those with gut issues or chronic illness, it is not as simple as just being able to tune into intuition to make food choices. Michelle explains the philosophy of “Internal Family Systems” and the idea that we have separate parts of ourselves that speak to us, and while those parts have our physical safety in mind, it is important to know whether the part speaking to us is our true self or just a part that wants us to be safe. As Molly and Michelle go through each of the 10 principles of intuitive eating, they explain that while the overall goal is great, the question becomes, is this approach focusing on the individual's needs or just telling us this is the only way? Our approach to food and our body should be one that is individualized based on our own unique needs. That is why it is important to work with someone that is invested in getting to the root cause of any mental or physical issues you are experiencing. The goal is to approach health changes in a loving manner and in a way that addresses your own unique needs and is of your own desire. Today's podcast guest, registered dietitian Dr. Heather Finley, joins Molly to have a discussion about gut health. As a result of learning about the connection between the gut and other parts of the body and mind, Dr. Finley was able to overcome the chronic bloating and constipation she experienced for 20 years. Towards the beginning of her healing journey, there was little knowledge about how the gut works and no one was able to pinpoint the cause of her symptoms. Our understanding of digestive health has evolved and we now understand how nutrition, lifestyle, and mindset have a direct impact on it. When we talk about the gut, we need to consider the whole body. Our narratives about the foods we should consume to maintain a healthy gut have led many of us to resort to restrictive diets. However, as we'll discuss in this episode, gut health is not about what you shouldn't eat, it's about what you should. Your microbiome benefits from a diverse diet, and there's a lot more to gut health than your food choices. This episode will explore the gut-brain connection, how anxiety influences the gut, the myths surrounding the gut, what normal bowel health looks like, and what the gut actually does. As Dr. Finley explains, a healthy gut is much less about doing more and cutting out foods, but rather about getting back to basics and creating a solid foundation for optimal gut health. You can pre-order Dr. Finley's upcoming book The Healthy, Happy Gut Cookbook here. Key Highlights: Heather's origin story and how she healed her gut Gut-brain connection How bacteria helps us fight illnesses Improving your gut health can make generational change How stress and anxiety affect your gut health What is normal bowel health? Bloating: Causes, what is normal, and what is not normal Gut health requires a solid foundation What impact does water consumption have on gut health? The impact of alcohol and sugar alcohols on gut health How functional health can more efficiently heal your body Episode Quotes: By improving your gut health, you actually can create generational change. - Dr. Finley Taking supplements could help you, but if you're not sleeping, if you're not eating and balancing your blood sugar, if you're not hydrating optimally … if you're not doing all these things then the supplements, everything you're doing for your gut health is not going to be as effective. - Dr. Finley I'm FULLY committed to having you stay LIGHT and AFLOAT during the Bermuda Triangle aka Holiday Season! Sophie Chiche sits down with Molly to share how she built a loving relationship not only with food but with her own body. Sophie weighed 350 pounds when she decided to break up with sugar. The beginning of that journey was one of “self-destruction”, as she puts it; but, she saw it through to the end. She passionately reflects on the most challenging obstacles she faced and the life-altering lessons she learned through the years. Listen in as Sophie discusses how she got to the point where she not only shed all that excess weight, but also came to develop a healthy and productive relationship with food. She talks about the importance of being strong enough to remove bad influences—including people—from your environment, and to get to the point where every bite of food becomes a bite of self-love rather than of self-destructiveness. Episode Quotes “My parents have been through war and tell us that we'd better not waste food. But I've always thought, ‘Wait, if I eat it and it hurts me, isn't it a waste as well?'” - Sophie Chiche “When you call it ‘relapse', you can't be in a relationship with food, and you need to be in a relationship with food.” -Molly Carmel “My love for myself is greater than my care about disappointing you.” -Sophie Chiche Key Highlights Overcoming destructive paradigms around food nurtured throughout our childhood Placing more value on what's best for you over the opinions of others Why refusing food doesn't always equal wasting food How to kindly and tactfully refuse sugar Episode Resources: You can know more about BE CURRENT at being-current.com (come join me on their 31-day challenge!!) Women often find it difficult to make time for themselves and to explore the things they enjoy. On the podcast today, mindfulness and wellness expert Randi Zinn offers refreshing insight into how to let our natural inclinations guide us and why it is important to do this. As a result of her diverse life experiences, Randi is able to connect with and understand others, and she shares what she knows with us today. Randi notes that since we are products of a patriarchal society, we have to start small and not expect to transform ourselves overnight. As well as working with individuals, Randi enjoys group work because she believes community is incredibly powerful. Sharing our stories with one another can be very healing and it can effectively combat the noise associated with being human. Randi notes that letting people know they matter and are safe is a gift. Initially, Randi's work focused on women who had just become moms, but she soon realized that the need for self-discovery and living authentically applied to most women, so she now serves all women who desire more abundance. During this conversation, Randi discusses her own unique journey connecting with her authenticity, how she began this work, and what she has seen women struggle with most. She also shares some tips on how to overcome negative self-talk and self-perception. Randi shares several nuggets of wisdom in this episode, and you won't want to miss it. Key Highlights: How do we make time for play, joy, and creativity, and why do we need to do it? How we as women are taught not to choose ourselves and to put ourselves last How Randi defines prioritizing yourself, some exercises we can try, and why it is important. The power of authenticity, honesty, and love Even when we are good at what we do, things don't always work out How Randi started working with women around authenticity Slowing down, rejecting failure, and looking inwards What Randi is doing to reconnect with her personal brand and become more authentic In the absence of the resources to pause work, what do people do? Dr. Michael Goran sits down with Molly to offer his best advice on helping our children navigate our sugar-saturated environment. Now that Christmas is right around the corner, this is a timely subject to dive into! But, as our guest reminds us, making sure that our kids indulge in moderation is a challenge that lasts beyond the Winter holiday season. After all, we still need to keep in mind Valentine's Day and Easter chocolates, graduation cakes in May, ice cream in the summer, and all manner of sugary treats come Halloween! In short, as Molly puts it: “This idea that it's ‘just a treat' is a bit of a delusion.” Listen in as Dr. Goran explains what sugar does to kids according to research, besides weight gain. He talks about setting boundaries with our children at home, while at the same time empowering them to self-regulate their own food choices. Dr. Goran then breaks down the two main paths that anyone can take to sugarproof themselves—the 7-day and 30-day challenges—and how just seven days' worth of healthy food choices already makes a huge difference. Episode Quotes “Food is for enjoyment as well as for nourishment. We've lost track of that a little bit.” - Dr. Michael Goran “Even after only seven days of sugar reduction, you can get benefits at the metabolic level. We've seen observable changes in behavior, temperament, and energy levels in children in just a few days.” -Dr. Michael Goran Key Highlights What is sugar doing to our kids, exactly? How to make Halloween healthier (but still just as fun!) by starting a Switch Witch tradition How to teach your kids to self-regulate their food choices at home How artificial sweeteners do more harm than good About Michael I. As we approach the holiday season, Molly has a lot to say about diet culture vultures and the marketing that says “how to survive the holiday season.” We don't want to just “survive” through this joyous time of year, we want to aim to thrive. Aiming for survival will lead you to hit below that mark, and Molly wants you to enjoy the holidays and feel a sense of joy and thriving. If we enter this season with the idea of just trying to survive, we can get into a fight, flight, fawn, or freeze mode, but if we are thinking of thriving during the holidays, that opens up a landscape for us to look at the parts of our life that bring joy, creativeness, happiness, and love. Molly encourages us to find “micro joys” in our life and see the world around us through a lens of gratitude for the small things. She shares some refreshing guiding principles to help you thrive through the holiday season so that you don't sell yourself short. So many people are trying to win off of your struggle around this time of year, but you need to take a look at who you are giving your power to and learn to access situations as your highest self. How do you know if you are in your highest self, or in your addiction mind? These guiding principles will help you determine exactly that and give you the power to make decisions that are in alignment with who you want to be. The marketing surrounding just “surviving” is a problem, because we are all worthy of thriving. Love yourself enough to be consistent and do things that bring you closer to knowing and loving who are you, because when you know yourself you're not going to sell yourself to the diet culture vultures that prey on people during the holidays and into the new year. Today's episode features Taylor Stone, a leader in higher consciousness, self-mastery, and energetics. Taylor's mission is to help remind women that they hold the power within them to become their own self-healers and live out their full purpose and potential. In Taylor's opinion, people can begin healing themselves by being honest about their choices and how the choices they are making are or aren't serving them. She teaches that people need to then give themselves some grace and begin working on healing. When people feel like victims, they forget they have choices, so Taylor and Molly strongly agree that it is crucial to leave the victim narrative behind. As a big proponent of gratitude, Taylor practices it every day. Although you may have a long way to go, it's okay and beneficial to hold gratitude for where you are right now. During this episode, we'll hear some of Taylor's personal stories about how she felt out of place at church when she was younger, how she always sought a deeper meaning in life, and how she finally found what worked for her. As a former NFL cheerleader, she will explain how being weighed every week during that time affected her relationship with food and her body, and how she healed. Taylor will also define and explain how energy, frequency, vibration, and alchemy are relevant to her healing work. Key Highlights: The role spirituality and religion play in overcoming addiction, and Taylor's quest to find deeper meaning outside the church Taylor talks about what it was like learning and working in the field of exercise science while being a cheerleader in the NFL Taylor's career trajectory from working for a well-known nutrition company to starting her own business How energy healing made a massive impact on Taylor's life and career What is energy healing? Taylor discusses alchemy, energy, and what one can expect from alchemy sessions Owning full responsibility for your life does not imply that you created or contributed to the trauma you experienced, but it helps you to move forward, says Taylor. How do we know when we have completed the work of healing? Is it possible? And how do we avoid being a “healing junkie”? Taylor's advice for people who don't believe in God Episode Quote: I believe in grace and moving through it, but there is also a point where you have to get to work and start being resourceful. - Taylor The truth is not fun. The truth is a frequency and when you start to tell yourself the truth, it's freeing. - Taylor Resources mentioned in this episode: Book: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks Paul Selig website: paulselig.com Listen to Taylor's podcast Vibe Higher I'm FULLY committed to having you stay LIGHT and AFLOAT during the Bermuda Triangle aka Holiday Season! Today Molly is joined by Dr. David Wiss, RDN and founder of Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs that specialize in treating eating and substance use disorders. This will be an episode about emotions, gentleness, and full body care. Dr. Wiss shares his views about intuitive eating, how trauma plays out in our immune systems, and the connection between the gut and the brain. Dr. Wiss believes in healing one's body before anything else using food. He asserts that food addiction is a global epidemic as a result of how ultra processed a lot the food we are consuming is and how those foods are changing our reward expectancies and behaviors. This in turn can spike other addictive processes and cause inattentiveness and impulsivity. According to Dr. Weiss, everything is on a continuum and a spectrum, so in order to make real sustainable change, we need tailor-made hybrid models that meet a patient's biological and psychological needs. Molly and Dr. Weiss will also discuss artificial sweeteners and preparing for the holiday season. Key Highlights: Dr. Wiss talks about what fatherhood has been like and how his family is doing. Dr. Wiss's views on intuitive eating, its effect on diet culture, and how people experience it differently Why intuitive eating may not be for people who have struggled with food rules or feelings of distress around food How trauma exists in the body and how legacies of trauma can cause inflammation in the body Stability, consistency, and boundaries- Heal the body first Dr. Wiss's thoughts on food addiction- Where it comes from and how to address it What happens when we entangle dietary restraint and food addiction, and how to tell the difference between the two. Advice for entering the upcoming holiday season Episode Quotes: If someone has a lot of conflict, I call it a discrepancy, there's a discrepancy between what their mind wants to weigh and what their body actually weighs–that discrepancy can be 30 pounds, but it could also be 3 pounds. As long as that discrepancy exists, there's internal conflict, there's conflict around food, and it changes the physiology of eating. They're living in flight or fight, they're not in rest or digest, and it doesn't allow the healing to occur. - Dr. Wiss Connect with Dr. Wiss: Website: nutritioninrecovery.com Visit wisemindnutrition.com to learn more about Dr. Wiss's program designed for people interested in using nutrition to optimize mental health. Alison has had this experience, and today she will discuss how during her childhood, she allowed being overweight to define who she was and divulges the two pivotal moments that helped her stop doing this. Molly and Ali will also talk about the importance of being open to learning from others at all times in order to be open to the gift of change that could come at any moment. They also share how they define recovery now and what that looks like for them. Ali reminds us that connection is the opposite of addiction. Key Highlights: How Ali's childhood was defined by her health issues and being overweight The two pivotal moments that helped Ali leave many aspects of diet culture behind and interrupt her disordered eating cycle Ali and Molly talk about how the gift of change can come at any moment and you have to be open to a message and open to getting well Recovery means recovering our authentic self What supportive relationships look like: Ali and Molly talk about how they communicate around their problems, what they've learned about the best way to respond to a friend that is struggling Triggers verses Emotional Takeovers What does Ali's life and relationship with food look like now? Marshall Malone returns on the podcast to reflect on his ongoing road to recovery, which began once he set the goal to totally break up with sugar by his 40th birthday. Listen in as Marshall shares the habits, rituals, and affirmations that have allowed him to shed 45 pounds and counting ever since he started his journey. Always keeping in mind that beliefs are nothing more than thoughts repeated, Marshall unpacks the mental and emotional hurdles that he had to overcome on his path to cultivating a healthier relationship with food—even after crossing the 66th day mark. Molly dispels the myth that “thoughts become things”, proposing instead that “beliefs become things”. Making this paradigm shift helps us to become more gentle with ourselves as we realize that negativity is totally normal, and that there is no such thing as perfection on this journey. Once we decide to break up with sugar, the greatest thing we can do to ensure lasting success is to simply stay consistent. Episode Quotes “What was more important than losing 45 pounds was shedding the negative self-esteem that I had.” - Marshall “If you keep falling off your wagon, you need a bigger wagon.” -Molly “Weight release is an outcome, not a measure.” -Molly “The thing that changes people is self-determination.” -Molly Key Highlights Bridging the gap between knowing you can achieve your goals, to believing it Being intentional about which beliefs you decide to change Why it's normal to have negative feelings at any stage of your journey Keeping your nutrition on-point in busy or stressful times Realizing that you're on this journey for yourself, not for anyone else About Marshall Malone Marshall Malone is a multi-platform content producer with over 15 years of experience in both retail marketing and digital marketing. Wendy Swanson dives into the ins and outs of acupuncture. Molly calls the modality “an absolute, life-changing measure” after she was cured of her Long Covid symptoms following her sessions with Wendy—something traditional Western medicine was never able to do for her. Listen in as Wendy paints a comprehensive picture of acupuncture and its history, as well as her fascinating journey in going against the grain to become an Eastern medicine practitioner. She talks about the importance of finding purposeful work that doubles as both a creative outlet and a vehicle for making a positive impact on the people around you—if not on the whole world. Wendy shares how acupuncture promotes the parasympathetic nervous system: teaching the body how to rest, digest, and renew. Through her passionate explanation of the wonders of this alternative modality, a profound, fundamental lesson emerges: Healing and renewal ultimately come down to trusting ourselves. According to Wendy, thriving in our being comes down to the realization that the body is a miracle if we allow it to be. Episode Quotes “Work is crucial for my wellbeing—to feel like I'm contributing to the world in a positive way.” - Wendy “I was so deeply unhappy that I had to trust, or else I would have ended up in a ditch someplace.” -Wendy “Emotions and physical symptoms are linked.” -Molly “Our biggest teacher is ourselves: our own body, our own knowing.” -Wendy Key Highlights Why having a creative outlet is paramount to your wellbeing Acupuncture 101 and the world of alternative medicine Emotions as energy Eating disorders, and how addiction connects to self-worth (or lack thereof) Understanding the (often uncomfortable) immediate aftermath of acupuncture Learn more about Wendy at: wendyswanson.com or risingstrongher.com Want to spend MORE time together? Today's guest, Joseph Sheehey, holds nothing back in sharing the details of his struggles with depression, suicidal thoughts, his career, as well as his views on medicine and healing. Joseph's mission is to have conversations that are nuanced that allow us to hear and understand why we think the way we do. He wants to share his experience with medicine and how that impacted his mission. When Joseph first struggled with depression in high school, he didn't know how to ask for help. Like many, Joseph believed that he had to prove himself and in order to prove himself, he had to work himself into the ground. Thoughts like, “you're not enough” creeped in. Seeing a therapist was his first step, but it was only surface level. Through college, Joseph never really dealt with the sadness and decided suicide was the only answer. This was the beginning of Joseph's journey through holistic healing utilizing CBT and EMDR among other things. Molly and Joseph go on to discuss the various outlets they each have utilized in their healing journey. This includes meditation, breathing techniques, cold plunging, etc. Molly and Joseph go on to talk about his business, Cured. Cured was born from Joseph's decision to create products and infuse them into the health and fitness industry and rebrand cannabis. Cured products are infused with adaptogens, functional mushrooms, and cannabis which are dried and cured in order to process them. This is where the name Cured comes from. Joseph says Cured is the future of the supplement industry and what people can utilize to truly optimize themselves. Using the healing properties of nature, Cured's mission is to show people how to do this and change their lives through it. Episode Quotes “It is true that you can rewrite your story and if we're not doing that until we take our last breath, I think that we're doing a disservice to ourselves, we're doing a disservice to our lineage, we're doing a disservice to future generations.” -Joseph “I am a high maintenance healthy person” -Molly “Perfectionism is the precursor to depression and anxiety” -Molly Key Highlights Addiction Toxic tribalism and the dangers of full reliance on medication as the answer Meditation Depression The How To Change Your Mind Docuseries on Netflix Awareness by Anthony DeMello The Untethered Soul and The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer Finding Joe on Amazon Prime or Apple TV Connect with Joseph Sheehey Instagram: @josephsheehey | @curednutrition Episode resources: Don't forget our generous 20% off code MOLLY at curednutrition.com! Having struggled with her weight and self-image since childhood, Sara discusses with Molly her journey of breaking up with sugar, her relationship with food, and the road to recovery. Due to an autoimmune disorder, she eliminated gluten and grains. This was a decision she made on her own, not from any medical advice from a doctor. Molly and Sara explore her journey through EMDR, reintroducing alcohol to her diet, her personal struggles during COVID, reevaluating her spirituality, and working on herself through therapies and counseling. Maybe you're like Sara and find it difficult to strike a balance between planning and just letting life happen with no plan at all. Getting stuck in a black-and-white pattern of thinking can carry over into so many aspects of life. After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's, Julie Reisler discusses her wake-up call from her body alerting her to stop consuming sugar. She has 19 years experience in recovering from sugar addiction. Molly and Julie relate their journeys of leaving sugar behind and how it can be easy to fall prey to the mind games associated with lifestyle changes. It can be easy to succumb to the “diet culture” where if you mess up once then you might as well throw away the progress made and just “eat the whole box of mac and cheese”. Julie explores how she gave herself compassion and how she was able to embrace her progressive recovery. Imagine training for a new job in which you are surrounded by the one thing you are abstinent from: sugar. This was reality for Julie! She delves into her career beginning with working in a bakery. She claims her connection to God increased because it was all she had to rely on. This is what eventually would lead to the beginning of her coaching career in working with clients who want to change their life. She considers her work a sacred union with the people she works with. Julie breaks down what to look for in a coach. She believes that anyone you coach is an expert in themselves. It's not the job of a coach to be the expert or give advice. The core to it is being non-judgemental, holding space where all emotions are welcome, making sure who you are coaching has what they need, deep listening, knowing how to reflect, and powerful questioning. Episode Quotes “You have to remember you are building something.” -Molly Carmel “The message comes from the mess” -Julie Reisler “Find a coach that matches your dreams” -Molly Carmel Key Highlights The humble beginnings of Julie Reisler and her struggle with sugar addiction Combating “diet culture” and rising above the temptation it can bring How Julie relied on her belief in God to get her out of the trenches and how sometimes it can be the only way to recovery The nitty gritty details of what it means to be a coach and what to look for in a coach versus a consultant Want to spend MORE time together? On today's episode, Molly sits down with her close friend Michelle Garside. Michelle begins the conversation by disclosing her journey through her eating disorder. She begins by discussing her experience with pregnancy and postpartum eating disorders and the struggles that come with it. Molly and Michelle dig into the thoughts that can creep in while struggling with eating disorders and relate to each other's experiences. This led to her being bulimic for 15 years. After coming home from studying abroad in Australia, Michelle was diagnosed with several addictions in a hospital then headed to rehab. She went to OA and found it comforting for her and found “her people” there. In 2015, she began dating again and met her now husband, Eric, who would change her perspective of her addiction for the rest of her life.
