Dustin Poirier gave it his all, putting on the sort of gritty and endlessly game performance against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 that we've come to expect from him during his great career. But it wasn't enough. There was never really a moment in this fight where it seemed like Cool Dusty P was going to win. Poirier had that dog in him, but so did Makhachev. The result? And still. Now, Poirier contemplates retirement while Makhachev waits to see who's next. Plus, Sean Strickland put on another sleepy, split-decision Strickland performance against Paulo Costa. And is there any end to the bullshit the UFC will make us sit through during a PPV? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On today's episode of UFC Unfiltered, Jim and Matt are back after a break in honor of Memorial Day for an episode revolving around Saturday's UFC 302 card featuring a pair of fighters on the card in welterweight Phil Rowe and lightweight Grant Dawson. Having gone a week without UFC action, Jim and Matt waste no time by immediately diving into matchups on the card before ultimately bringing on Phil Rowe as the first guest caller. A former excellent basketball player himself, Rowe delves deep into how he has since found solace in his journey as a professional fighter after initially hoping to break into basketball as a professional. Rowe goes on to explain how he wears his jiu-jitsu black belt with honor and takes grappling matches to help improve his skills for MMA fights like the one he has on Saturday against Jake Matthews. Shortly thereafter, Grant Dawson joins the show — and to the surprise of no one, Matt immediately asks his fellow Star Wars fan a series of questions about his thoughts on the franchise's new TV show set to drop. As Jim steers the conversation back to Dawson's fight against Joe Solecki on Saturday's prelims, the guys unpack the dynamics of a matchup that Matt calls a "grappler's delight". Finally, Jim and Matt wrap up the show with three picks atop the pay-per-view card of UFC 302 — and you don't want to miss the BOLD prediction made by one of the two co-hosts for the headlining lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier.

Ahead of UFC 302 on Saturday, The Fighter vs. The Writer returns as UFC legend Matt Brown and MMA Fighting senior reporter Damon Martin break down the biggest storylines from the card. First things first, we react to the latest from Ronda Rousey after the former UFC champion said she felt vilified by the media after her exodus from combat sports and how she expects she would get booed if she actually made an appearance at UFC events. Does Rousey have a point about how she was treated or is she still struggling to face her shortcomings at the end of her career? Brown has his take on Rousey's exit from the UFC and the string of comments she's made about her losses after releasing her autobiography. We'll also get into the biggest fights at UFC 302 including Islam Makhachev defending his title against Dustin Poirier in the main event. Does Poirier have a great chance to pull off the upset on Saturday or will this be another dominant performance from Makhachev? What about Sean Strickland returning against Paulo Costa? What does Strickland need to do to win and how can Costa thwart the former UFC middleweight champion? All this and more on the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer! Dustin Poirier is already an all-time great lightweight. He's a shoo-in first-ballot UFC Hall of Famer. He's beloved by fans. He possesses a resume that will stand-up with almost anyone's. But you know what would be really transformative for him? If he became undisputed lightweight champion. This weekend at UFC 302, Poirier gets what is likely his final opportunity to seize that crown when he takes on Islam Makhachev. It definitely won't be easy. Poirier is going off as close to a 6-to-1 underdog at some sportsbooks. But we can't help but wonder ... what if ... Plus, Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa should be an interesting match-up of styles between two well-known, uh, characters. But only one of them needs to win it to keep his hype train rolling. Spoiler: It's Sean Strickland. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On today's episode of UFC Unfiltered, Matt and Jim get a friend of the show as a special guest co-host in Ray Longo to recap the action from Saturday's UFC 298 card. When Longo hops on the show, the guys jump straight into Serra-Longo's own Merab Dvalishvili's statement win over Henry Cejudo and how his nonstop pressure poses trouble for the rest of the UFC bantamweights. After that, the trio discuss the significance of Ilia Topuria's 2nd-round KO win over long-reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the UFC 298 main event. The guys wrap up the show with a recap of the other moments that stuck out to them from Saturday's exciting card in Anaheim, California.
Ilia Topuria made history after his HUGE knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298, and DC is here to give you his INSTANT REACTION. Daniel Cormier gives his take on Topuria's victory and what that means for both Ilia and Volk moving forward. And with Dana White announcing huge breaking news for UFC 300, DC gives his initial thought to the massive news. Plus, don't miss Cormier's break down Henry Cejudo's loss to Merab Dvalishvili, Robert Whittaker's bounce back victory over Paulo Costa, and Ian Garry outlasting Geoff Neal. 143 - Watching UFC 298 at Wrestling tournament2:43 - Ilia Topuria KNOCKS OUT Volkanovski10:55 - Rest of UFC 298 Card (Ian Garry, Henry Cejudo, Robert Whittaker) #Volume #HerdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In just three days, UFC 298 will finally be here! So with that in mind, Matt Serra and Jim Norton bring on two exciting fighters from Saturday's card with welterweight Geoff Neal and women's strawweight Mackenzie Dern as guests. Making his return to the show for the first time since 2019, Geoff Neal dishes out his thoughts on Ian Machado Garry's trash talk as the two get closer to their high-stakes showdown on Saturday's card. While waiting for Mackenzie Dern, Jim and Matt begin to make their picks from the UFC 298 main card — saving the main event and co-main event until after Dern's interview. When Dern hops on the call, the jiu-jitsu black belt explains the circumstances that led to her accepting a short-notice fight against 3rd-ranked women's strawweight Amanda Lemos and why she's grateful for the opportunity to get back on the winning track against the fellow Brazilian. To cap off the show, Jim and Matt call their shot for both the Robert Whittaker vs. Paulo Costa middleweight co-main event and the Alexander Volkanovski vs. Ilia Topuria featherweight title fight in the main event of the evening.
