Welcome to The Turf Zone podcast. This episode features the article “Preparing for the Next Poa Control Season” by Scott McElroy, PhD – Professor, Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences, Auburn University and and Travis Gannon, PhD – Professor, Department of Crop and Soil Science, North Carolina State University. Quote – “When did Noah build the Ark? Before the Rain.” – Robert Redford in “Spy Game” It is the end of Poa annua's life span here in the southeast. As this article is being written in late May, Poa is struggling to produce that last bit of seed it can before it dies, perpetuating whatever traits it carries into the future. Likely, if you have been trying to control Poa, you are looking down at a population that has been selected for some form of resistance to the herbicides you have been using. The short-time traveler seeds are going to greet you next November-ish. As warm-season grasses are sliding into dormancy, or at least a state of slowed or diminished growth, those seeds carrying those herbicide-defying traits are going to make their appearance, potentially thwarting whatever attempt you used last year yet again. Before you start making decisions about your management program next year, you need to test your Poa population. Two populations from this year were showing signs of Kerb resistance until we brought them into the lab and realized that it was not resistance, but most likely enhanced degradation due to overuse. Email Dr. McElroy at resistancelab@auburn.edu and get a better picture of what your population is resistant to. For most herbicides, you can get an answer in six weeks. For the southeastern US, there are three distinct application periods for Poa control. This is for bermudagrass and zoysiagrass golf, sports fields, professional lawn care, and general use. Golf and sports fields are the most complicated because they receive the most traffic and use, therefore the greater turfgrass damage, which leads to greater weed invasion. The application scenarios we talk about here are more likely to be used in golf than in other areas, but applicable to all situations except sports, which require special attention to not reduce rooting and traction. The Pre Application- The Basis of Control. In all situations, you want to start off with a general preemergence herbicide. If in golf and non-sports turfgrass areas, this is Specticle (indaziflam) or a standard pre like Barricade (prodiamine), Pendulum (pendimethalin), or Dimension (dithiopyr). In our opinion, this is the optimal application timing for Specticle (indaziflam). Specticle should not be used on sports fields, it is a root inhibitor and can result in poor-performing turfgrass. Regardless of which herbicide, the initial pre application is the basis of all Poa control programs. Skipping the pre puts greater pressure on follow-up postemergent applications. Even if pre-applications only reduce the Poa population by 50%, that is still 50% fewer weeds that follow-up applications have to deal with. Later applications are much more likely to fail if you put all the pressure on follow-up post applications. Adding in a postemergent herbicide at this time is not a bad idea, but it needs to have some residual and some root uptake because your pre needs to be watered in. Monument (trifloxysulfuron) is possible because it can be foliar absorbed, but Revolver (foramsulfuron) has limited root uptake. Others are using Sencor (metribuzin) in this timing. The Winter Transition: Key to Resistance Management. The early winter, or early winter transition application, is the most critical. Skipping this application leads to too much pressure being placed on the initial pre application which can expedite resistance development. This application needs to yield acceptable control in two to three weeks, which eliminates any resistant survivors that may be present and provides further preemergence control. The key to the transition application is choosing multiple herbicides with a minimum of three different modes of action, with at least two having preemergence and postemergence activity. To clarify- Three modes of action with two having both pre and post activity. Triazines – atrazine and simazine – are the starting point for this control. Think of these as your Post/Pre herbicides, they are primarily post but give you some pre activity. Sencor (metribuzin) is also an option, although not as consistently effective as atrazine or simazine. If these herbicides are not available for use or if you have extensive confirmed resistance, ALS inhibitors such as Revolver (foramsulfuron), Monument (trifloxysulfuron), or Katana (flazasulfuron) are useful, as is Scepter (imazaquin). Next, you need a Pre/Post in the mix – a herbicide that gives you primarily pre action but adds in some post control. Kerb (pronamide/propyzamide) and Sureguard (flumioxazin) are good choices at this timing. A second application of Specticle also has potential in this situation, although it has less post activity than the two listed above. Ronstar (oxadiazon) applied as a liquid to provide post activity also has potential in this timing. Last in the mix you need something that can aid control and help prevent resistance. Glyphosate is the obvious choice in this mixture. If you are not completely dormant, a low rate at 5 fl oz/a (of a 4 lb ai gallon) can add some benefit, but if confident in the dormancy, use a full labeled rate on dormant turfgrass. Finale (glufosinate) is a good substitute if glyphosate resistance is present or developing. Neither glyphosate or glufosinate are recommended for zoysiagrass, adding in a Revolver, Katana, or another ALS inhibitor is a better choice due to potential damage from non-selective herbicides. The Spring Transition – Control Any Escapes and Spring Crabgrass Control. Combining any further Poa annua control with spring crabgrass and goosegrass control is an easy way to maximize efficiency. This pushes the herbicide application into late February to early March for the majority of the southeastern United States (time applications to your specific area based on local weather patterns and soil temperatures). Dormancy questions and spring greenup of bermudagrass or zoysiagrass complicate this application timing. Some herbicides are simply too harsh on greenup to be used in this period. First, the standard pre herbicides should be used at this time – Barricade (prodiamine), Pendulum (pendimethalin), Dimension (dithiopyr), or Ronstar (oxadiazon, granular is not dormant, but liquid can be used if still dormant). While Specticle is more effective for Poa annua control and summer annuals such as goosegrass and doveweed, it is equivalent to the standards for crabgrass control. Second, post herbicides that can be used in this transition period are few. ALS-inhibitors mentioned before are definitely safe, but resistance is extensive, thwarting their use. Triazines can delay greenup and cause transition injury. Non-selectives such as glyphosate and glufosinate are out due to spring injury. Final Thought. Herbicides are primary technology we have today to control weeds. We live in a chemical technological age. Unfortunately, weeds, especially Poa annua, have evolved resistance to these herbicides. Our thoughts and ideas we provide herein are meant to reduce the potential for resistance development and all herbicide options are not discussed for brevity. These multi-herbicide strategies now are necessary because herbicide resistance has become so prevalent and it is our goal to strategically use these herbicides to prevent further resistance development and protect herbicide technology for future use. Note: Always read and follow the complete herbicide label before mixing, handling, or applying any product, as the label provides legally required directions for safe, effective use, application rates, precautions, and site-specific restrictions. We break down the full timeline, the ransom notes sent to media outlets, the FBI's warning about AI deepfakes complicating proof of life, the arrest of a fake ransom scammer, a new message being analyzed by investigators, a vehicle of interest at a Tucson Circle K, and the towing of a car from Nancy's property Friday evening. Still no suspects. Still no proof of life. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward. The President Posted What?!Late Thursday night, Trump's Truth Social account shared a video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, during Black History Month. The White House called the backlash "fake outrage." Then Tim Scott called it "the most racist thing I've seen out of this White House." Then Republicans started calling the President directly. Then it came down. Then they blamed a staffer. Then Trump said he won't apologize. We walk through every layer.Tulsi Gabbard and the Election Conspiracy Road ShowThe Director of National Intelligence showed up at an FBI raid in Georgia, seized voting machines in Puerto Rico, skipped the capture of Nicolás Maduro, and has a classified whistleblower complaint locked in a safe alleging she restricted intelligence for political purposes. We connect the dots between all of it.Kamala Harris and the Return of KamalaHQHarris relaunched her campaign accounts as "Headquarters," a youth mobilization project that is very obviously a 2028 campaign in disguise. Robin makes the data driven case for why the Democratic Party needs to move on, including the 21 point youth vote collapse, underwater favorability numbers, and what happens when a party chooses familiarity over a real reckoning.Key Sources & ReferencesPima County Sheriff's Department press conferences (Feb. 5–6, 2026)FBI Phoenix Division, SAC Heith Janke statementsNBC News, CBS News, CNN, ABC News, Fox 10 Phoenix — Nancy Guthrie coverageWashington Post, NYT, NBC News, CBS News, CNN, CNBC, Axios, The Hill — Trump/Obama video coverageReuters — Tulsi Gabbard Puerto Rico voting machine investigationWall Street Journal — Gabbard whistleblower complaint reportingCiviqs, Marquette Law School, Catalist — Harris polling and post election dataConnect With Us

We're unpacking the chaotic, controversial, and wildly influential life of Aleister Crowley, the so-called “The Beast 666” and one of the most polarizing figures in modern occult history. From his strict Christian upbringing and rebellion into ceremonial magick, to sex magick, Thelema, and the infamous phrase “Do what thou wilt,” we explore what Crowley actually believed versus how he lived. We examine his role in shaping modern witchcraft and Wicca, his influence on tarot and pop culture, and why his legacy still sparks debate today. Along the way, we cover scandals, cult dynamics, drugs, power, misogyny, and the uncomfortable truth that harmful people can still leave lasting spiritual ideas behind. A nuanced, critical, and occasionally unhinged look at why modern witchcraft can't fully escape Crowley's shadow.Join our Patreon for bonus episodes, magical downloads, and unhinged side quests: https://www.patreon.com/demystifymagicPre-order Molly's book Mundane Magic A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff DonePreorder Mundane Magic & Join the Virtual Book Tour: Celebrate the release of Molly's new book with an exclusive online event on Feb 21, 12 PM EST. SPY GAME (2001) looks like a slick, early-2000s spy thriller, but beneath Tony Scott's kinetic style is a surprisingly thoughtful film about loyalty, institutional cynicism, and the quiet mechanics of real espionage. Rather than gadgets or superhuman assassins, SPY GAME is about phone calls, favors, leverage, and knowing the system well enough to bend it without breaking it.   Robert Redford plays Nathan Muir, a veteran CIA operative on his final day before retirement, racing against the clock to save his former protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt), who has been captured in a Chinese prison after going off-mission. What unfolds is less an action spectacle and more a chess match fought through bureaucracy, institutional blind spots, and decades of accumulated spycraft.   As the film moves between past missions and present-day interrogation rooms, SPY GAME becomes a story about mentorship, moral compromise, and the cost of serving systems that treat people as expendable assets. Redford delivers one of his most restrained performances, while Tony Scott proves that a “popcorn director” can still find real heart beneath the spectacle. Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/FOURPLAY and use code FOURPLAY and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! Raycon audio products are up to 20% off this holiday season! In this episode of The Wright Report, Bryan covers new U.S. military strikes on drug boats in the Pacific, spy games inside Venezuela, a leadership shakeup at ICE, and President Trump's high-stakes meetings in Asia ahead of his summit with China's Xi Jinping. U.S. Strikes Cartel Boats in the Pacific: Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed that U.S. forces destroyed four cartel vessels off Mexico's coast. Bryan warns that the cartels are adapting fast — soon using AI-driven drone swarms and decoy boats to overwhelm U.S. defenses. "This is a shifting battlespace," he says, "where drug wars are becoming drone wars." Spy Games in Venezuela: Reports claim the Maduro regime captured mercenaries allegedly linked to the CIA, while a leaked DHS operation shows U.S. officers tried to recruit Maduro's pilot to defect with the dictator mid-flight. Bryan, skeptical of the CIA connection, explains why the pitch failed and what it reveals about poor tradecraft. ICE Shakeup and Deportation Fight: Twelve city directors were removed as DHS Secretary Kristi Noem pushes for mass deportations beyond violent offenders. The debate now divides Homeland Security: target "the worst of the worst" or deport "all of the above." Bryan argues that half-measures risk repeating 40 years of failed border policy. Shutdown Politics and GOP Infighting: Speaker Mike Johnson clashed with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene over the shutdown and Trump's leadership, reflecting tension between populists focused on domestic issues and those backing Trump's global diplomacy. Polls show Republicans gaining ground while Trump's approval dips slightly among independents. Trump's Asia Tour and China's Power Struggles: As Trump meets leaders in Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea before tomorrow's summit with Xi Jinping, China faces internal turmoil — a slowing economy and the purge of nine top generals. Bryan says, "Xi isn't losing power, but he's becoming more paranoid — and that makes China far more dangerous." "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32 Keywords: U.S. Navy drug boat strikes Pacific, AI cartel drone warfare, Venezuela CIA recruitment pilot, ICE deportation strategy Noem Homan, DHS leadership purge, Trump shutdown GOP divide, Trump Asia trade tour Xi Jinping summit, China economic slowdown military purge, Japan South Korea trade deals

This week, we check in on the CIA and how it’s faring in the age of AI. Oz sits down with David Ignatius, a foreign affairs columnist for The Washington Post to discuss his article, “A Band of Innovators Reimagines the Spy Game for a World with No Cover.” Ignatius has been covering US foreign policy and the CIA for almost four decades and he recently had a realization – that the “future of intelligence was going to be written in zeros and ones.” Which means the intelligence community needs to adapt and adapt quickly. But how does a government agency do this and what happens if it doesn’t? And who is responsible for dragging the bureaucracy-addled CIA into the AI future?
