For our last episode of our launch season Mikaila Ulmer, founder of Me & The Bees Lemonade, sits down with us to discuss the ups and downs of being a young, Black, female entrepreneur. At just 11 years old, she began building her empire and has not looked back since, from appearing on and winning Shark Tank and introducing President Barack Obama at the United State of Women Summit to writing her first book last year, “Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid'' last year. A leading voice of the Gen Z generation, Mikaila discusses the pressures to address all injustices, and in the midst of a global pandemic, social unrest and global warming disrupting her junior year of high school. But in the midst of it all Mikaila's mission to save the bees and elevate environmental justice as a cause and a way of life is both clear and inspiring. Most importantly we explore how she navigates the world as a Black girl, the challenges that accompany it professionally and personally, and most importantly how she protects and maintains her joy through it all. For more information about Me & The Bees, check out Meandthebees.com. Be sure to catch Mikaila Ulmer on the June cover of Austin Woman Magazine!

Experiencing pain and fear can shape us in good, and bad ways. We can recoil, avoiding that which inflicted the pain, or we can let it drive us to positive change. Our guest this week is a prime example of the latter. Mikaila Ulmer, through the thoughtful guidance of her parents, transformed a painful childhood experience of being stung by bees into a thriving and growing business with a purpose. And now, her product, Me & the Bees Lemonade, is sold in stores nationwide. Mikaila appeared on Shark Tank and got buy in from Damon John, she also received an eight hundred-thousand-dollar investment from a consortium of football players. She started a nonprofit and now, has written a delightful book titled Bee Fearless. Although Mikaila is only 15 years young, she and her family spent the last 10 years growing the business and the brand. Their efforts have brought awareness to a bee population in peril and have highlighted the importance purpose plays in organizational growth. We are grateful to have Mikaila as our guest and we are sure you will find her as engaging as we do. Who here started a lemonade stand as their first endeavor into the business world? I did. My brother and I dragged a cooler of Kool-aid down to the end of our driveway and I’m pretty sure my mom called the neighbors to drive by so we’d get a few customers. My lemonade business started and ended there… But when this guest started her lemonade stand, it transformed into something much, much bigger. Mikaila Ulmer is the youngest guest we’ve ever featured on the Goal Digger Podcast. She started her lemonade company at 4-years old. Episode Title: How To BEE Fearless In this episode, we talk to Mikaila Ulmer (Founder & CEO of Me and The Bees Lemonade) as we discuss her business, her new book, and what she learned from President Obama.  Purchase her book here Check out her website and non-profit.    **More On Mikaila** Let our founder, Mikaila, explain the origin of Me & the Bees Lemonade: When I was just four, I got stung by a bee and then got stung again less than a week later! Naturally, I didn't enjoy the bee stings at all and I became scared of bees. But then after doing some research about them, I became fascinated and learned all about what they do for me and our ecosystem. Around that same time, my family encouraged me to make a product for a couple of children's business competitions - the Acton Children's Business Fair and Austin Lemonade Day. So I put on my thinking cap. I thought about some ideas. While I was thinking, my Great Granny Helen, who lived in Cameron, South Carolina, sent my family a 1940s cookbook, which included her special recipe for flaxseed lemonade. So then I thought, what if I make something that helps honeybees and uses my Great Granny Helen's lemonade recipe? I decided to give her beloved lemonade a new twist by adding honey from bees, instead of only sugar. That's how Be Sweet Lemonade was born! However, we had to change the name due to a copyright issue so we decided to call it Me & the Bees Lemonade because we give a percentage of sales to help save the bees. We are now celebrating more than 10 years in “buzzness!” Mikaila started her lemonade at youth entrepreneurial events and at her lemonade stand out in front of her home, donating a percentage of the profits to local and international organizations fighting hard to save the honeybees. That is why she touts: “Buy a Bottle…Save a Bee.” Now at age 15, her little idea from more than 10 years ago continues to grow and grow...by more than 500 percent since the company's humble Austin, Texas-based beginnings. Today, the award-winning, ready-to-drink Me & the Bees Lemonades in five refreshing flavors is buzzing off the shelves of Whole Foods Market, The Fresh Market, World Market, H-E-B stores across Texas and Kroger stores in Houston. It is also available at a growing number of restaurants, food trailers and natural food delivery companies. When not traveling for speaking events to share her stories of being a social entrepreneur, leading workshops on how to save the bees, or participating in social entrepreneurship panels, you can find Mikaila coming up with ideas to help the Healthy Hive Foundation, a nonprofit to further help the mission of saving the pollinators. And of course, she's working hard as a high school student, loving Spanish, science and rock climbing classes. Find Mikaila on Facebook and Instagram pages where followers can ‘like' interesting facts about bees, honey and Me & the Bees Lemonade. Mikaila's first book, Bee Fearless, Dream Like a Kid, launches in August 2020. It's rare for a beverage company to start with $50 and grow to being sold in 2,500 stores across 40 states,” says Mikaila Ulmer, CEO of Me & the Bees Lemonade. It's rarer still for that company to be run by a 15-year-old. “Age didn't faze me when it came to starting my business,” she says. “I was just excited to get started.” It began with a bee sting when Ulmer was four. “I was afraid, so my parents encouraged me to do some research,” Ulmer says. “I learned that bees were important pollinators and that they were dying at an alarming rate.” She started selling her granny's honey-sweetened lemonade recipe in Austin and donated the profits to bee-saving organizations. She got the attention of Whole Foods when she began teaching free pollination workshops for kids there. “They said if I could figure out a way to bottle my product, they could carry it in their store.” In 2015, at age nine, Ulmer secured $60,000 in seed money on ABC's reality show Shark Tank. A year later, Whole Foods announced a distribution deal with Me & the Bees for $11 million. “When I started, I never expected to appear on Shark Tank or speak in front of 20,000 people or meet Barack Obama, but I did!” says Ulmer. Her future goals are as lofty (“I want to see my product in all 50 states!"), but her focus is clear: “I want my business to always be more than just lemonade—I want to have an even bigger impact on saving the bees.” Mikaila releases her story in a new book "Bee Fearless, Dream Like a Kid" and my partner Ann Trainor and I spoke with her and there is so much wisdom from this young woman we hope you enjoy the show!

This episode is a reflection on the disservice we do to other people by not allowing them to do something on their own. Too often for me I get too involved under the guise of helping. In this way they'll never learn or build the necessary confidence. One of the best examples where parents allowed their child to step into a moment is with Mikaila Ulmer (https://youtu.be/Kb4qe9DcrPM). It's really an inspiring story. I discuss it and talk about my own experiences. I highlight why it's insidious to not allow people to do something for themselves. Now, you might think does that mean I never help. Of course not. Guidance is key. But don't over step. Plus, there is a way to be direct and honest WHILE showing empathy. It's called radical candor, a term Kim Scott coined (you can read more about it in her book aptly titled Radical Candor). So take a listen, reflect with me and make a positive change—for yourself and others. As always, if you have any questions or want to share your thoughts, go ahead. You can write in the comment section or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Lastly, for more free resources from your 360 creative coach, check out my website at http://philsvitek.com.

Around that same time, my family encouraged me to make a product for a couple of children's business competitions - the Acton Children’s Business Fair and Austin Lemonade Day. That is why she touts: “Buy a Bottle…Save a Bee.” Now at age 15, her little idea from more than 10 years ago continues to grow and grow...by more than 500 percent since the company’s humble Austin, Texas-based beginnings. And of course, she’s working hard as a high school student, loving Spanish, science and rock climbing classes. Find Mikaila on Facebook and Instagram pages where followers can ‘like’ interesting facts about bees, honey and Me & the Bees Lemonade. Mikaila’s first book, Bee Fearless, Dream Like a Kid, launches in August 2020. Published by Penguin Random House, it is about her adventures in being a social entrepreneur and heading up a purpose-based brand aimed at offering premium, all-natural lemonades in a way that helps save the bees.
