Open, honest and collaborative communication has become the norm with topics such as social justice issues and mental health spoken about far more. As a result, managers need to adopt a more intimate and personalised approach to keep employees united as a single community, using data to understand what is and isn't working. In this podcast Joey Price, CEO of Jumpstart: HR and Stephanie Coward, MD of HCM at IRIS Software Group, explore how a manager can become more of a ‘coach' who tunes into the emotional side of management while juggling the needs of the business and their team.
Thank you to our Icelandic listener Jessic Lyn Webb who told us that this NYT bestseller was “truly the most heinous misjustice to storytelling I have every had the pain of reading,” and included lots of borderline harmful takes on mental illness. As much as business owners know the importance of hiring, they also know it means paperwork. Lots of it. Health insurance, taxes and payroll typically require separate software, while the hardware, security passwords, and applications employees need to do their job exist within their own set of systems. To top it all off, the HR industry as a whole has been slow to embrace technology, perpetuating these complex processes.Parker Conrad struggled with these challenges himself when he founded his first company, SigFig, in 2007. After spending hours repeatedly faxing employee records at Kinko's for every new hire, he knew the HR industry was ripe for a revamp. In this episode, host Ilana Strauss finds out how this realization led him to start–and leave–Zenefits, why he spent nearly two years in his basement building a new product, and how it all led to the launch of Rippling in 2018, a company now valued at more than $6.5 billion. You'll hear from founder Parker Conrad about the struggle to launch his third start up, from Chief Marketing Officer Matt Epstein about the market gap for better HR software, and from HR consultant Joey Price, who explains why his industry has been slow to adopt technology. When It Clicked is an original podcast from ClickUp. For a transcript of this episode and other extras, check out When It Clicked - Rippling.
The research and development department of a startup is vital to its success. And you'll need a dedicated crew to do so. Joey Price discusses the significance of team involvement in companies in this podcast. According to Joey, a strong bond between the founders is the first step toward an engaged team. It would be best to be the most effective communicators and motivators. Then there's your capacity to engage others in a group setting. As a startup, you can't pay a large salary or provide fringe benefits. You do, however, have a goal to achieve and a team to work with. As a result, you must spend in HR to create the greatest possible infrastructure, a smooth workflow, and an attractive environment for both you and your employees. So basically, team engagement is the biggest thing in startups that makes people stick around.

In this episode, Springworks' Head of Marketing, Abhash Kumar talks to Joey Price, CEO of Jumpstart: HR, LLC - a managed HR Services company that was recently highlighted by Inc.com as one of “7 Startups Making Life Easier for Small Business Owners. As the CEO, Joey innovates by creating HR solutions for small business owners and start-up founders who want to build better, more competitive businesses.Joey is an award-winning Human resources executive, business coach, thought leader, and professor. He also hosts Business, Life, and Coffee a podcast focused on personal development for busy professionals where he shares carefully curated conversations on personal finance, psychology, professional development, and business for emerging professionals and business owners alike.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:The inspiration behind Jumpstart:HR:Jumpstart:HR offers HR Project Management Leadership to small businesses, startups, and the Federal Government. They shape the company's HR, work culture, integrate technology, and more. The main aim of the company is to create a positive environment in a workspace. People should be happy at work. It is a matter of leading people towards positive success. The company focuses on providing HR solutions to small businesses that want to build better and sustainable solutions for the company. When the US was in the middle of a recession, Joey realized that companies wanted more results with fewer investments. That's when he realized that these companies needed expertise from outside sources. Joey explains how all companies should consider outsourcing HR like they do in marketing or any other field. Another observation Joey made then was the advancement of technology. Nobody was required to be in the same place to work. An employee can address their boss while living in a different city. This is how the idea of Jumpstart:HR grew and came to action. Similarities between HR and Marketing:Joey talks about the common practices that can be observed in every organization. First, they highly focus on their brand culture. The brand culture is highly consistent for all the employees from every department. And the reason behind it being so successful is that these companies invest in their employees. And it should be ensured that HR understands what kind of investments do people want. That is the same question that marketing people ask. They ask and search for the features and benefits of the products, and what will people respond to the most. They ensure that these products will drive an emotional attachment among people. Brands like Uber, Google, Lyft, Apple have become household names now. They have managed to create emotional attachment. The way to achieve it is not by manipulation, but out of inspiration, by creating an emotional attachment.Recurring challenges Joey's guests have talked about in his podcast:One of them is to figure out how to navigate work in the likes of social justice. Worldly issues do have an impact on the employees' emotional response. They are triggered and, as a leader, one to manage it constructively. They need to observe what is happening outside and to your business. Thoughts about companies going permanently remote:Talking about going permanently remote presents its own unique challenge to People Leaders. They have to be thoughtful about the entire process before and after it is executed. They need to figure out its trial period, a way to convey the message behind it to the employees, making it successful, the work strategy, and others. Are You Ready to Start Investing in Real Estate? w/ Lane Kawaoka and Joey Price
Two founders of HR firms and industry podcast leaders – Lars Schmidt and Joey Price – talk about how businesses are adapting their wellness and benefits packages in 2021. We focus on employers with 250 employees or less and the data from a new report. Lars and Joey offer practical advice on everything from benefits communication to how sole HR practitioners can lean on a wider community, as well as the urgency of implementing HR technology and process digitization. Customize employee benefits packages: Benefits are more important than ever, and companies are starting to broaden beyond what they traditionally viewed as a benefits suite, such as student loan repayments and a new urgency on mental health. (02:26)Strive for “digital by default”: It's time to ditch the manual processes and adopt HR technology and digital solutions – to reflect a modern workplace. (06:05)You may be overspending already: Don't shy away from HR tech because of cost. When you account for the time spent on manual processes or creating workarounds, you might find you may already have the budget to invest in digital tools. (08:45)Survey your employees: If you're having to cut costs due to cash flow issues, engage your employees to co-create choices. Or, survey them to determine what they find valuable. (09:54)Benefits communication is key: Articulate the tangible benefits for the employee and educate everyone on the value of the benefits. (12:45)Are you an HR practitioner of one?
