How do we give voice to a global diaspora without reducing it to a punchline? In this bonus coffee break episode, we read the reactions we got to S1E07 guest Joaquin Pedro Valdes, specifically his Filipino Accent workshop for performers. Joaquin's study of the Filipino accent and its place in the global narrative opens up conversations on how Filipino characters are written, portrayed, and represented in mainstream media... and how a deeper historic and cultural understanding are required to appreciate the spectrum of speech and sounds in the diaspora. In response, romance writer Mina V. Esguerra sent us her feelings on problematic depictions of Pinoy accents in English audiobooks. Applied Linguistics expert Prof. Ron Darvin also shared research on the interplay of social class and linguistics among Filipino migrant communities, and helpful resources for actors to avoid "essentializing and exoticizing" the Filipino accent. Along the way, we weigh in on audience reactions to the accents in Netflix's Trese. And finally, Joaquin flips the script by getting British actors of Filipino descent to recite the Bard in Filipino, in a moving tribute to the thousands of Filipino migrant nurses working for the National Health Service all across the UK, many of whom have left their homes to live far from the ones they love. --- Follow Joaquin on IG @joaquinpedrovaldes or Twitter @jpedrovaldesuk More on his accent project at https://www.andasian.com/feed/andasian-roundtable-filipino-linguistics Follow Mina on IG or Twitter @minavesguerra http://minavesguerra.com https://www.romanceclassbooks.com/book-author/mina-v-esguerra/ Follow Ron on IG @ron.darvin or Twitter @rondarvin https://cuhk.academia.edu/RonDarvin https://languagesciences.ubc.ca/people/affiliate/ron-darvin https://www.academia.edu/34671909/Social_class_and_the_inequality_of_English_speakers_in_a_globalized_world_pdf https://www.dialectsarchive.com/philippines Watch Trese on Netflix https://www.netflix.com/trese --- Watch New Earth Theatre's "Bayanihan with Love: Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare" https://youtu.be/el0jaGhsP0Q https://www.instagram.com/tv/CMuVZZwHuLn/ Translated and directed by Joaquin Pedro Valdes Cast: James Bradwell, Jane Burns, Heidi Carmichael, James Cooney, Vincent Fajilagmago, Richard Peralta, Max Percy, Jeffrey Sangalang, Martin Sarreal, Joaquin Pedro Valdes, Joyce Veheary Royalty-Free Music: Gavin Luke's "Sincerity" via www.epidemicsound.com Ilokano, Cebuano, and Hiligaynon line translations by Carlo Blanco and Luna Griño Inocian Video created for New Earth Theatre @newearththeatre https://yellowearth.org/bayanihan-with-love2/ Video produced for #FilipinoFood4NHS, with special thanks to Kanlungan Filipino Consortium and Filipino Food UK, and supported using public funding by Arts Council England #BayanihanWithLove --- Music: “Neon Laser Horizon” by Kevin MacLeod (imcompetech.com) licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License Sound Editing by franticsong Like what you heard? The book Keep the Faith by Ana Tejano When Faith’s five-year relationship ends right before she leaves for a typhoon-stricken town in Iloilo, she chooses not to make a big deal out of it. She’s not a stranger to heartbreak after all – she deals with it everyday with her disaster relief work. How can she be broken up about her lost love life when she’s surrounded by people who literally lost everything? All she wants now is for her life to go back to normal. Never mind her unanswered questions about the breakup, or that (not so) tiny ache in her heart whenever she sees her ex. She’s okay now and maybe she’s even starting to like Nico Tamayo, the attractive new guy at work. With new possibilities in the horizon, Faith thinks she is well on her way to moving on. But when her past comes calling back to her, will all the good things in her present be enough to keep her on the path? Or will she finally learn that there’s more to heartbreak and recovery than what she knows?Keep the Faith by Ana Tejano Meet the narrator Jade Albert Passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic are just some words one could use to describe Jade Albert. Her social media activity will tell you she is a dog person, a social justice advocate, a binge-watcher, a casual tarot card reader, and a lover of sunsets, roller coasters, makeup, food, Disney, astrology, film, music, and theater―among others (although those are already plenty!). Not unlike many aspiring artists, she has a day job in digital marketing. During her free time, Jade is a passionate supporter and avid consumer of the arts and the many other things she enjoys, as well as an actress and singer on the side. She was the rising star of women’s skating, and he was the superstar forward of men’s hockey. Her parents and coach were against their relationship, and because Calinda wanted to prove that no hot guy would ever distract her from her dream, she chose skating over him–and also avoided him all together. Ten years later, they meet again as gold medalists and prominent sports advocates, still single and undeniably attracted to each other. It’s still not a good time for them, because Ramirez is retiring from hockey and moving back to the United States. Calinda doesn’t do relationships, really, and proposes they use his final three weeks in Manila to explore what might have been, and do all the things they wish they’d done (there’s a list!). In this episode: Gio Gahol is Isaiah Rachel Coates is Rhys Get the book on buqo. Buy the print edition (Philippines) at Uniqube, 3F University Mall, Taft Avenue Manila. Or order copies from the author. Book description: Just for the record, the heat can get to even the most calculated of minds. Let it be stated that Rhys loves Ryan forever and ever. But certain needs are not being met, leaving her frustrated and asking for too much than the conservative and almost rock star, Ryan, is willing to give. Uncooperative (or cooperative, depending on your point of view) weather provides her an opportunity to ask not what she can do for her friends, but what a friend can do for her. Isaiah likes to say that the best thing about Rhys is that he can stand in her breathing space and feel nothing. Something of a breather when dancing with Lia short circuits his entire operating system. But all his beliefs are challenged when Rhys chances upon him in a steamy practice room in the middle of a heat wave. Don’t do it. Lindsay and Jake have loved each other (as friends) since their senior year in college, and she made sure they didn’t become more than that. The guy now known as Jacob Berkeley, star of a wildly successful TV show, was always too much for her. Too handsome, too many questionable hookups, too restless. Also sensitive, fun, and genuinely caring. She’s his emergency contact, his “zombie apocalypse buddy,” his holiday dinner companion. They’ve kept up this low-maintenance friendship for years, surviving graduation, their new careers, her move to New York City to work as an environment consultant. But then, days before a big climate change conference, he shows up, with big news. Jake wants to pick up what he never managed to finish in college. He wants to save forests again, work in environmental research – and he wants her. Don’t fall in love with Jake…Why again? Contact author Mina V.
