In this episode: I am joined by The Adorable Deplorable, Ryan Mc Michael, and Mrs Smitty from the Stereo app. We went deep on the abortion issue and briefly touched on the new concealed carry law passed by the US Supreme Court. This was a long conversation about 3.5 hours, so I broke it up into 4 parts. Adorable Deplorable is a self-proclaimed gay republican who is very grounded in common sense. I don't know if I have ever agreed with a republican on so many issues. I urged him to run for office because although he is a fiscally conservative republican, he is all about human and civil rights. Mrs Smitty is the host of the Murder Minute podcast, an adventure into the world of true crime. She is also a mother and a democrat. Ryan Mc Michael is a father, democrat, and an amazing musician who recently released an amazing album called Ginny, by his band None Mothers. I am a staunch supporter of civil rights, freedom of speech, and bodily autonomy. I believe these fundamental freedoms and that when we limit or restrict these fundamental rights, we create a slippery slope where more and more of our rights can be eroded and legislated out of existence. What is more fundamental than bodily autonomy? The United States was founded on the ideas of the pursuit of happiness and individual liberties. I believe everybody is entitled to their opinion. The important thing about rights is that all have them. For instance, in regard to freedom of speech, I support the right people with an opposing viewpoint to voice their opinion. It is most important to support this right in cases we you disagree with someone. Let's use football player Colin Kaepernick as an example, if you do not support his right to peacefully protest and to use is fame to draw attention to police brutality against the black community, then you can't really call yourself a patriot. This country was founded on rebellion and protest. Some would argue that a football game is not the right time or place to be talking about politics. It is my belief, once you start restricting how and where someone can exercise their civil rights you have laid the groundwork for further erosion of our civil rights. The fact that people called him "un-American" for exercising the civil rights our country was founded on to me is the ultimate hypocrisy. His protest was no way "anti American" it was simply a protest against police brutality. How can anyone blame him for not honoring a song that clamors "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave", when his community is besieged by state sanctioned violence, oppression, and civil rights violations? I'm Kelli Berens-Brink, and this is the True Crime IRL Murder Minute. Who killed Karen? The body of Karen Bodine – a 37-year-old mother of three - was found the morning of Jan. 22, 2007. Her nude body was dumped on a busy road near a gravel pit, and detectives say her body had been posed by her killer. The weekend before her murder, she had been hanging out with an unsavory group of friends… could one of them have killed her? Police are confident that more than one person is responsible for Karen Bodine's murder, and that it is likely someone she knew. So WHO killed Karen? Well - An unknown male's DNA was recovered from a ligature found around Karen's neck, and there were two tire tracks at the location where Bodine's body was recovered. As we've seen in other cases in recent years, where there's DNA…there will VERY likely be an arrest one day. Until that day comes -- anyone with information about Karen Bodine's death, as well as the days leading up to it, is asked to call the Thurston County Sheriff's Office 360-786-5500. THIS is the story of The Death House of Greenwich Village. There's a beautiful Brownstone brick home that blends in with all the others on West 10th Street in Greenwich Village… but the history that's taken place inside its walls is anything BUT beautiful. 22 people have died in the home, referred to as the House of Death – and a few of its tenants are said to still reside there in the afterlife. Several well-known names have dwelled at this residence – including, Mark Twain, who is said to still haunt the building. Some pretty horrific things have happened here, including – Famous former attorney Joel Steinberg beat his partner Hedda Nussbaum's six-year-old daughter to death in the house. Steinberg was convicted of first-degree manslaughter but was out on parole in 2004. Besides this tragic death, the house was the site of numerous suicides and other tragic and mysterious deaths. Mollie Tibbetts, who went missing in the Summer of 2018 and was found murdered weeks later, is finally getting the justice she deserves. At the time of this podcast release, her killer, Christian Bahena Rivera, a 26-year-old undocumented immigrant from Mexico, has been found guilty by an Iowa jury of first-degree murder for allegedly killing Tibbetts, 20, and hiding her body in a cornfield in the rural city of Brooklyn, Iowa, in July 2018. Ever wonder what makes an otherwise normal person into a serial killer? Well, that’s a question that has plagued psychologists for years. BUT, we do know a few contributing factors can be a history of abuse, previous trauma, past head injuries, AND… there’s also a set of 3 factors that can be predictive of whether or not someone becomes a serial killer – and it’s called… The Macdonald triad. The Macdonald triad was first proposed by psychiatrist J. M. Macdonald, who believed that these three things – first, cruelty to animals, second, an obsession with fire-setting, and lastly, persistent bedwetting, are linked to violent or homicidal behaviors later in life. The Macdonald triad has been present in many criminals and murders, including the well-known serial killer Ed Kemper. The Kansas City Butcher HI – I’m Kelli Berens Brink and THIS is the True Crime IRL Murder Minute! Robert Berdella was a serial killer in Kansas during the late 1980’s and he was dubbed the Kansas City Butcher. He held at least six men captive for weeks, tortured them and killed them. He then chopped their bodies into small pieces and stuffed them into trash bags before disposing of them. He kept detailed notes on the murders of each of his victims which eventually helped police link all six murders to him. He wouldn't have been caught, if it hadn't been for his seventh potential victim – who was able to escape through a second-floor window of Berdella’s home. Berdella pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1988, BUT, he died of a heart attack in prison just four years later, in 1992. In June 2014, Maria and Derek Broaddus and their 3 young children were getting ready to move into their dream home in New Jersey. Three days after closing on their new home, a letter arrived in the mailbox. The letter was addressed to “The New Owner” in unusual handwriting. The letter read: “Dearest new neighbor at 657 Boulevard, allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood. How did you end up here? Did 657 Boulevard call to you with its force within? 657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time. Who am I? There are hundreds and hundreds of cars that drive by 657 Boulevard each day. Maybe I am in one. Look at all the windows you can see from 657 Boulevard. Maybe I am in one. Look out any of the many windows in 657 Boulevard at all the people who stroll by each day. Maybe I am one.” The letter also mentioned specifics about the Broaddus family. “You have children. I have seen them,” the letter continued, “So far I think there are three that I have counted. Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested? Better for me. Was your old house too small for the growing family? Or was it greed to bring me your children? Once I know their names, I will call them and draw them to me.” The sender signed the letter “The Watcher”. The Broaddus family never actually moved into their dream home after receiving these ominous and threatening letters. And…I don’t know that I would either. So what happened to this house, to the Broaddus Family….and to the Watcher? Well…you’ll have to stay tuned to find out…. The murder was closely followed within her community, and the police received thousands of tips after her killing. However, the case gradually grew cold as the investigation stretched on, remaining unsolved for 39 years. But, thanks to the new science of familial DNA, a distant family member's Ancestry DNA kit led police to the killer - Jerry Burns, who was later convicted and is serving a life sentence in prison for Michelle's death. This is the True Crime IRL Murder Minute with Kelli Berens-Brink and I’m here to tell you the story of the I-70 Strangler. From the 1980s until 1996, Herbert Baumeister would go to gay bars to pick up men and lure them to his indoor pool to kill them. The pool area was set up very strangely, with a bunch of mannequins that looked like they were enjoying a pool party. Hey I’m not kink shaming or anything…to each their own, but this guy was creepy AF. Just one look at his picture, and you can see the murder vibe in his eyes. He strangled at least two dozen men, dumped many of their bodies along I-70 in Indiana, AND buried several more on his own property. TRUE CRIME IRL MURDER MINUTE – “Lyman Had A Lover” I am Kelli Berens Brink, and THIS is the True Crime IRL murder Minute! One murder – in one minute – let’s get started! On September 28th, 1951, the body of 65-year-old Lyman Elledge was found on the front lawn of one of his neighbors, Barney Wiskus, in their Delaware County Iowa community. The county coroner said that he died of a skull fracture wound to the back of the head. there were no solid leads – and soon, the case went cold. Fast forward to the 1980’s…and there’s a new Sheriff in town. That new Sherriff, Bert Elledge – was actually related to the victim, and he reopened the case, making it his mission to solve it. And, although it was UNoffical – solve it he did. Turns out, Lyman and his wife were estranged. And Lyman …had a lover. BUT, his lover also had ANOTHER boyfriend. Oh, what a tangled web we weave. The other man walked in on Lyman and his lady in the heat of passion, and he saw red. Lyman threw on his clothes, but no shoes - and ran down the street, being chased by the other angry man. He lost his glasses in the pursuit and was bludgeoned over the head with a heavy wooden club. Lyman crawled to Barney Wiskus’s front yard, where he finally succumbed to his injuries and was found dead later that morning. Although justice may have never been served, we can consider this Case closed…It’s the oldest story in the book. This has been your murder minute. One murder, in one minute.
