Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of school shooting terrorist Ethan Crumbley, requests release from prison while her attorney appeals her sentence to the Michigan Court of Appeals. Jennifer and James Crumbley were the first parents to be charged and convicted in connection with a school shooting following their son's 2021 shooting that killed 4 students and injured 7 others..
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday, Dec. 10, that the mother, whose son was 16 years old at the time of the crash, will not be charged in connection to the November 2023 crash. Kiernan Tague, who was 16 at the time of the crash, was charged in March with second-degree murder for the Nov. 13, 2023, crash that claimed the life of this 18-year-old friend, Flynn Mackrell. Police say Tague was driving over 100 miles per hour on a residential street in Grosse Pointe Farms where the speed limit was 25 mph when he lost control and struck a utility pole and tree. Mackrell's mother, Anne Vanker, requested the teen driver's mother be charged, citing the case of convicted Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley and his parents, who were the first parents in United States history to be held responsible for a school shooting committed by their child. But Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said on Dec. 10 that a panel of assistant prosecutors determined the mother “was not directly or indirectly involved in any way in the offenses for which we have charged her son.” “Parenting is hard in the best of circumstances,” Worthy said in a statement. “Most parents do everything they can to mentor their children and steer them in the right direction. The juvenile respondent's mother was no different. She took consistent, active steps to try to make sure that he stayed on the right path.” "There will be those that say she should have done more, but we have looked at all of the facts and those facts dictate no criminal charges here," Worthy said. "We will not be more specific about her actions because her son will be facing trial in February. (The defendant's mother) was not directly or indirectly involved in any way in the offenses for which we have charged her son. Despite his mother's attempts, it is our firm position that the respondent and the respondent only is directly responsible for the crimes that we have adult designated and charged him with." MacKrell's mother Anne Vanker told The News she thought there was enough evidence to prove the driver's mother knew he was reckless because a Grosse Pointe Farms police report showed the woman had monitored her son's driving habits via the Life 360 app that allows parents to view their kids' driving speed, hard braking and other activity. Mackrell's mother previously told the paper that she believed the teen driver's parents could have done something to prevent the crash that killed her son. MacKrell's parents said he was picked up by a 16-year-old friend who was driving his mother's white 2021 BMW X3. They were going to surprise another friend in Grosse Pointe Farms. Afterward, the driver sped over 100 mph while heading southwest on Ridge Road, officials said. That stretch of the road has a 25 mph speed limit. He lost control of the SUV, struck a utility pole, went airborne, and then hit a tree, witnesses said. They reported that the SUV was moving “at a very high rate of speed.” “The vehicle was traveling at such a high rate of speed that the engine, transmission, front axle, and passenger compartment all separated from each other and scattered all over the roadway,” the police report says. Vanker called the announcement "a weak decision." "The wounds never close, and I'm disappointed," Vanker said. "When your child is skipping school or smoking pot, a parent maybe can't control that. But she knew her son was driving more than 100 mph because of the Life 360 app; that was right in the police report. She didn't try to control his behavior. And she provided him with the murder weapon, which was the car, knowing he was an aggressive driver. "I know Kym Worthy does the best she can, and her office gets a lot of cases," Vanker said. "But this was a missed opportunity. So many kids are killed in car accidents every year, and parents keep giving them the keys to these cars, knowing how crazy they drive. This was a chance to hold parents accountable. Now, my son is dead, and my family is destroyed." Tague is not being charged as an adult but is adult-designated, meaning if convicted, a judge can sentence him as a juvenile or as an adult or blended sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if Tague is not rehabilitated. Could a parent's inaction be as deadly as their child's actions? In the latest twist of unfortunate family bonding, both alleged shooter Colt Gray and his father, Colin Gray, are facing murder charges after the horrific school shooting in Georgia. It's becoming the new standard, much like the case of Ethan Crumbley and his parents, where accountability doesn't skip a generation. Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer dive into how "see something, say something" often stops short of "do something." Despite prior warnings and even a visit from law enforcement, nothing was done to prevent this tragedy. In a tragic turn of events at an Orlando apartment complex, a 10-year-old girl allegedly shot and killed a neighbor following a heated altercation, leading her mother, Lakrisha Isaac, to accept a plea deal just days before her impending trial. Isaac, 33, entered a plea of no contest to charges of manslaughter and culpable negligence after her daughter fatally shot 41-year-old Lashaun Rodgers on May 30, 2022. The plea deal was confirmed through court records obtained by Inside Edition Digital. The deadly incident unfolded during an argument between Isaac and Rodgers, which escalated into a physical confrontation. Allegedly, Isaac handed her daughter her handbag during the altercation, from which the minor retrieved a handgun, loaded a bullet into the gun, and fired a fatal shot at Rodgers. According to witness statements provided to the police, the events leading to the tragic shooting occurred during a Memorial Day weekend celebration at an Orlando apartment complex. Rodgers' boyfriend recounted to authorities that he and Rodgers were outside, cooking on a grill, when Lakrisha Isaac approached them, initiating a confrontation stemming from a recent disagreement between Isaac and Rodgers. The argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with Isaac allegedly striking Rodgers, who responded in kind. Attempting to diffuse the situation, Rodgers' boyfriend intervened, but Rodgers attempted to reengage with Isaac. It was during this heated exchange that Isaac's 10-year-old daughter, who had been present throughout the argument, allegedly retrieved a gun from her mother's possession and fatally shot Rodgers in the face. After the shooting, the young girl reportedly exclaimed, "She shouldn't have hit my momma," before Isaac took the gun from her daughter and pointed it at Rodgers' boyfriend. Witness Ashley corroborated the sequence of events, stating she observed the argument escalating into a physical fight before hearing a gunshot and witnessing Isaac pointing the gun at Rodgers' boyfriend. Despite the gravity of the situation, witnesses noted Isaac's apparent lack of remorse as she returned to her apartment following the incident. A video recording of Lakrisha Isaac's interrogation, obtained from the State Attorney's Office, captured her terse response to police questioning: "I ain't got nothing to say to y'all, at all. Don't talk to my baby, either. She's underage. No reason to talk to her." Despite Isaac's reluctance to engage, investigators confirmed that her daughter cooperated, providing her own account of the events that transpired. According to the affidavit, Isaac's daughter informed authorities that her mother was intoxicated and expressed a desire to confront Rodgers "woman to woman." Despite instructions to remain in their apartment, the daughter followed her mother and stood beside her, accompanied by one of Isaac's friends, as the argument escalated. During the altercation, the daughter claimed to have witnessed an individual wielding an unidentified object, which allegedly struck her mother. She believed Rodgers inflicted the blow, resulting in a head injury. Additionally, the daughter observed another person holding a rock during the argument. However, Isaac denied sustaining any injuries when questioned by the police. The affidavit further detailed the daughter's assertion that Rodgers threatened her and her family. Feeling provoked and citing anger issues, the daughter purportedly seized the firearm from Isaac's friend and aimed it above Rodgers' head before firing a single shot, which caused Rodgers to collapse. Although police arrested the minor following the shooting, the State Attorney's Office opted not to try her as an adult. Instead, she faces charges of second-degree murder and has been in a detention center since her arrest, with her case status currently unknown. Isaac's plea deal stipulates five years in prison followed by three years of probation, contingent upon her not being arrested while out on bail before her sentencing hearing on June 21. Additionally, she must attend a four-hour parenting course and undergo substance abuse evaluation and treatment. This tragic incident comes amid heightened scrutiny on parental responsibility in cases involving minors and firearms, following the recent convictions of James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley, on charges of involuntary manslaughter in Michigan. State Attorney Monique Worrell expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career. This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a tragic turn of events at an Orlando apartment complex, a 10-year-old girl allegedly shot and killed a neighbor following a heated altercation, prompting her mother, Lakrisha Isaac, to accept a plea deal just days before her impending trial. According to witness statements provided to the police, the events leading to the tragic shooting unfolded during a Memorial Day weekend celebration at an Orlando apartment complex. According to the affidavit, Isaac's daughter informed authorities that her mother was intoxicated and expressed a desire to confront Rodgers "woman to women." Despite instructions to remain in their apartment, the daughter followed her mother and stood beside her, accompanied by one of Isaac's friends, as the argument escalated. On today's episode of Hear Me Out: prosecuting parents. Ethan Crumbley's parents didn't pull the trigger that killed 4 students in 2021 — but they've been sentenced to prison time for it all the same. School shootings are devastatingly common in this country, but punishing the parents of the killer is a new tactic of handling the aftermath. Even if you think the Crumbleys were bad parents, though, the questions should be posed: why are we punishing them under the law? And is this the best way to address, or even prevent, mass tragedies? As James and Jennifer Crumbley awaited sentencing for their conviction for involuntary manslaughter, both sought to avoid jail. Their son Ethan Crumbley is serving life in prison for the school rampage where four were killed and seven others were injured. The gun used was given to the teen as a birthday present by his parents. James, convicted of involuntary manslaughter, asked the judge for "time served" and Jennifer asked the judge to let her serve her time on house arrest in a guest house at her attorney's home. Oakland County Prosecutor Marc Keast has recommended 10-to-15-year jail sentences for both Jennifer and her husband, James. While James was in jail, damning phone conversations surfaced in which Crumbley had allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. In a call from October 9, 2023, five months before the trial, Crumbley says, “Yeah, Karen McDonald, you're going down. … Go ahead, record this call. Send it to Karen McDonald. Tell her how James Crumbley is going to f------ take her down." In a call on December 23, 2023, Crumbley says “There will be retribution, believe me." The threats were bad enough that Crumbley's jail communication privileges were revoked during his trial. Neither received the sentence they asked for. Ethan Crumbley was just 15 years old when he was arrested for killing four students and injuring several others in a shooting at Oxford High School in 2021. When investigators learned that his parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, failed to prevent the deadly actions of their son, they were charged and eventually convicted of involuntary manslaughter – becoming the first parents in U.S. history to be held criminally responsible for their child's mass school shooting plot. A landmark ruling last week sentenced them both to 10 years in prison. In today's Headlines, Candice is joined by legal analyst Josh Ritter to discuss how Jennifer and James' negligence led to their sentences, and the impact this case could have on parents in the future.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Today's Headlines: Arizona's Supreme Court upheld a near-total abortion ban, initially enacted in 1864, which makes nearly all abortion procedures illegal, without exceptions for rape or incest, to be enforced within 45 days. However, efforts to counteract this ban are already in motion, with plans to amend the state constitution directly on the November ballot to safeguard abortion rights, gathering significant support with over 500,000 signatures. In a separate development, concerns have been raised by Republican congressmen about the infiltration of Kremlin propaganda within their own party, highlighting the broader challenge of combating foreign influence and misinformation within the American political landscape. Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced new regulations targeting toxic pollution from over 200 chemical plants across the United States, aiming to reduce the risk of cancer for nearby communities. In court case updates, James and Jennifer Crumbley were sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter charges related to their son Ethan Crumbley's mass shooting, where he killed four classmates and received a life sentence without parole while The European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of over 2,000 Swiss women who sued the government for failing to address climate change adequately, potentially forcing Switzerland to reduce fossil fuel consumption and Donald Trump's attempt to sue Judge Juan Merchan to delay his campaign finance trial was denied. In a landmark ruling, James and Jennifer Crumbley, parents of the Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, were each sentenced to 10-15 years in prison for their role in failing to prevent the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of four students in 2021. Appearing at the Oakland County Court, the Crumbleys sat close together but barely exchanged glances as their attorneys argued for lesser sentences. Impact statements from relatives of the victims, Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Tate Myre, and Justin Shilling, were delivered before sentencing. "The ripple effects of both James and Jennifer's failures to act have devastated us all," expressed Justin's mother, Jill Soave, highlighting the anguish felt by the victims' families. This case marks the first instance in U.S. history where parents have been convicted for their alleged role in a mass school shooting. During the sentencing, Jennifer Crumbley spoke of her anguish since the tragic event, while James Crumbley became emotional, expressing empathy for the victims' families. However, defense attorneys argued for lesser sentences, citing time served and the absence of intent. Judge Cheryl Matthews emphasized the Crumbleys' failure to address concerns about their son's behavior, stating, "Opportunity knocked over and over again, louder and louder, and was ignored." Her decision reflects the gravity of their negligence in preventing the tragedy. Relatives of the victims recounted their pain and loss, expressing deep-seated resentment towards the Crumbleys. "The lack of compassion you've shown is outright disgusting," remarked Nicole Beausoleil, mother of Madisyn Baldwin, addressing Jennifer Crumbley directly. Others reflected on the irreplaceable void left by the loss of their loved ones. Steve St. Juliana, father of Hana St. Juliana, expressed his conviction that the Crumbleys deserved long sentences, emphasizing the enduring anguish caused by their actions. The Crumbleys were also ordered not to contact the victims' families, with considerations for a no-contact order between them and their son, Ethan Crumbley. The judge indicated that Ethan and James Crumbley would likely be housed separately within the Michigan Department of Corrections. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, the sentencing of the Crumbleys serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of their actions and the ongoing quest for healing and closure. School shooter Ethan Crumbley opened fire in a Michigan school, killing four students. He pled guilty to all charges and is now serving life in prison. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumpley, are also charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say they should have been aware of their son's mental health and should not have made it possible for him to have access to weapons. The parents' trials are expected to begin later this month, but now Jennifer Crumbley has asked a judge to dismiss three witnesses who say their testimony could prejudice a jury. A judge has ruled, however, that two of the witnesses will be allowed to testify, with a narrow focus. The jury will also be allowed to see surveillance video from the school.
