On this episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show, we're joined by journalist and horror scholar David Katznelson. Known for his meticulous exploration of the horror genre's history, David shares details behind a fascinating project where he watches and analyzes every horror movie from the 1970's. His most recent focus has been 1974—a pivotal and hauntingly transitional year in horror. From Texas Chainsaw Massacre to forgotten gems like Help Me, I'm Possessed, David's work breaks down the evolution of horror, how societal chaos like the Vietnam War shaped the genre, and what makes 1974 a landmark year for the genre. We also discuss his upcoming book on 70s horror and the enduring impact of directors like Tobe Hooper. Whether you're a die-hard horror fan or a filmmaker looking for historical inspiration, this episode is a treasure trove of insights into horror's rich legacy.Show NotesMovies DiscussedTexas Chainsaw MassacreHelp Me, I'm PossessedIt's AliveDerangedBlack ChristmasFlesh for FrankensteinBlood for DraculaLegend of the Seven Golden VampiresCannibal HolocaustThe Friday the 13th franchiseThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise (including Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III and Texas Chainsaw 3D)Exorcist-inspired films (The Sexorcist, Legacy of Satan)70s exploitation films (Vampyros Lesbos, Blood Splattered Bride)Mother of Tears (2007)Dark Glasses (2022)Longlegs (2024)The Substance (2024)Strange Darling (2024)Evil Dead Rise (2023)Heretic (2024)Terrifier 3 (Upcoming)Barbarian (2022)Renfield (2023)Jason X (2001)The Howling II: Your Sister Is a Werewolf (1985)Cannibal Holocaust (1980)Directors & Filmmakers ReferencedTobe HooperAndy WarholPaul MorrisseyHerschell Gordon LewisDario ArgentoBooks & ProjectsDavid's upcoming book on 70s horrorThe Dybbuk (classic Judaic horror)Music ReferencedThe MisfitsBauhaus The DamnedJapanese noise musicPlatforms & NewslettersDavid Katznelson's Substack: The Signal from David KatznelsonFollow David Katznelson at:IMBd: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm10775975/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oakiedog/X (Twitter): https://x.com/oakiedogSubstack: https://oakiedog.substack.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-katznelson-3a1601/
This week, Eric and Josh discuss: winning sports tickets, broken popcorn machines, Coca Cola, the Los Angeles wildfires, the Rideau Canal, our Vampire Film Festival, Disney's Hercules, encore screenings, and more! They also mention the movies screening the week of Friday January 17 - Thursday January 23: A Real Pain, Anora, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Flow, Supervixens, and Vampyros Lesbos!
As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. So join us in this extra long special episode as we go over our favorite viewings of this year, as well as some shout-outs and discussions on other films that came out in 2024. The Vampire Doll (1970), Lake of Dracula (1971), and Evil of Dracula (1974). In the annals of Japanese horror cinema, this vampire trilogy from director Michio Yamamoto seems to be close to escaping into obscurity. In fact, try finding much more than a passing mention of these films in any reference books. But thanks to Arrow Video, all three of these films are at least saved from fading away in the sunlight like any good vampire, in one fantastic box set! Because these seemed to be on the outskirts of the vampire genre, we thought it would be a great opportunity for us to take a closer look at them, and to see if they need more attention. Listen and find out! Films mentioned in this episode: Blacula (1972), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Count Yorga, Vampire (1970), Dracula 72 AD (1972), El Topo (1970), Evil of Dracula (1974), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein vs Baragon (1965), Horror of Dracula (1957), Ju-On (2002), King Kong vs Godzilla (1963), Lake of Dracula (1971), Lust for a Vampire (1971), Ring (1998), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), Son of Frankenstein (1939), Throne of Blood (1957), The Vampire Doll (1970), Vampyros Lesbos (1971)
This month, as we get closer to spooky season, Lee has crafted a quick and dirty playlist revolving around vampire films from the 1970s. Greats like Dracula, Yorga, Barlow, Blacula, and several other lesser known blood suckers are featured. Lee talks less than usual on this one, so you the listener gets to the music faster! This week, two of Jess Franco's movies with his first muse Soledad Miranda. If you've never seen one of his movies, you may want to start here. Vampyros Lesbos promises you vampires and lesbians and delivers. She Killed In Ecstasy has the same crew and a similar story, but who cares? It's Jess Franco and Soledad Miranda. Lesbian Vampires embody many things - beauty, ruthlessness, man-hating and the lustful intensity of a thousand Scorpios. They also have killer wardrobes (pun intended). Torie and Maggie take their first bite into gratuitous sexploitation marred by a male victim's confusingly cringeworthy kissing in VAMPYRES (1974). They witness the most concentrated representation of Power Scorpio energy in cinema history with VAMPYROS LESBOS (1971) and low-key fetishes for True Crime in DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (1971).
Todd thinks it's exploitation fare striving for something a little greater. Craig thinks it's just porn. You be the judge as you listen to this week's discussion of one of the most notorious lesbian vampire flicks of all time.
Welcome back to Fright School! Joshua and Joe get serious about performative allyship. We share our memories of our first Pride celebrations. this week we are exploring an island full of Lesbian vampires in VAMPYROS LESBOS! Like last week's episode, we met another behavioral health professional attempting to treat vampirism. We wonder what Freud would think of this application of psychoanalysis? We revisit our Aryan vs Eastern European trope, discuss the myth of sexual violence as a catalyst for lesbianism, and predatory Queers. It's a great day to be Sad at the SHUDcast and not because Cody watched a bunch of erotic vampire movies and talks at length about them. We hope… 00:00 - 11:00ish Intros: Cody talks about his favorite movie ever made and how it's also not his favorite by that director (bc logic), how many times Curtis has watched certain movies, and how Lucas has a shirt for literally every weird occasion you could ask for. 11:00ish - 1:19:00ish What we watched in late July: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Batman (x10 this year for ol' Lucas), RRR (AGAIN, THIS TRAIN KEEPS ROLLIN' BABY), Beyond the Black Rainbow, F9: The Fast Saga, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Thor: Love and Thunder (which we all saw), They Live, Poltergiest (1982), Cronos, Us, Hell Fest, The Strangers: Prey at Night, The Ring (2002), The Ring 2, Predator 2, Predators (which Cody and Curtis have weird beef over, bc the movie is great), The Burning, Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, The House on Sorority Row, The Blood-spattered Bride, Tombs of the Blind Dead, The Deadly Spawn, Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Hellboy (2019 – Cody had a time, friends), Head of the Family, Bloody Hell, Burnt Offerings, Daughters of Darkness, Vampyros Lesbos, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, Final Destination, Shin Godzilla, The Bob's Burgers Movie, 1BR, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (again), Bahubali 1 & 2 (Curtis needed more Rajamouli), Before Sunset, Rogue, Orca, The Ruins, The Shallows, Mosquito, 47 Meters Down, and NOPE (whoooooooooooo boyyyyyyy what a film). 1:19:00ish - We go a little hard and a little long on Jordan Peele's latest, so strap in and be warned, spoilers are abound. - 2:30:00ish THE SADNESS - SHUDdown and discussion 2:30:00ish - End - Our next movie!

In this episode, Marc, Joann, and Kristina pick up where they left off in the previous episode, starting off with the 1972 arthouse/blaxploitation film Ganja & Hess and we move on from there through Vampyros Lesbos, Love at First Bite, The Lost Boys, The Hunger, culminating on a brief discussion of Twilight (we're going to devote a full episode to that film in later episodes). Please follow us on Twitter @vampire_insider where you'll be able to interact with Joann and Marc (you never know which one you'll get) and have sneak peaks into our upcoming episodes. Lady Frankenstein (1971), Erotic Rites of Frankenstsein (1973), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973). While Frankenstein is one of the oldest monsters in the genre, and has been adapted multiple times by a variety of creators, some closer to the original source than others, there are other filmmakers that go far enough away from the orignal novel that they're not even in same library! But it is always interesting to see where these creative filmmakers take that story, giving it their own twist, and putting it out there for teh world to see! Join us as we delve into 3 different variations on the Frankenstein theme, all that deal with sex, nudity, gore, and some of the strangest in Euro-Horror! Films mentioned in this episode: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), Attack of the Crab Monsters (1957), The Black Cat (1934), Blood for Dracula (1974), The Brain that Wouldn't Die (1962), Deep Red (1975), The Devil's Nightmare (1971), The Devil's Wedding Night (1973), The Diabolical Dr. Z (1966), Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein (1972), Erotic Rites of Frankenstein (1973), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Female Vampire (1973), Frankenstein (1910), Frankenstein (1931), Island of the Fishmen (1979), Lady Frankenstein (1971), Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Undead (1957), Vampyros Lesbos (1971)
We check out Vampyros Lesbos, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, and Willard. And Kaitlyn joins us a surprise guest! Thanks for listening!
Vampyres (1974), Fascination (1979), & Vampyros Lesbos (1971) - In this episode, we delved into some of the lesser known vampire films that go off the beaten path when compared to traditional vampire films, from three different countries, and from three different filmmakers (Jose Larraz, Jean Rollin, and Jess Franco).
Lesbian Vamptober comes to its chilling conclusion. Literal professor Alex Hollett joins us to talk about VAMPYROS LESBOS, perhaps the pinnacle of certified ~~~p h r e a k~~~ Jesus Franco's career. Fritz Lang (yes, that Fritz Lang) said of Franco's Necronomicon that it was "the first erotic film I've seen all the way through because it's a beautiful piece of cinema." So if you love filmmaking that is so pure, it compels silent film auteurs to admit that they watch porn for j/o reasons, this is the film for you! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
CW: descriptions of gore, murder, death. Happy Halloween! In this episode, we talk about a long history of lesbian vampires in media. We talked about Carmilla, Dracula's Daughter, Daughters of Darkness, Vampyros Lesbos, The Hunger, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Killing Me!, and Vampire Blood Drive.
Next stop 1971 with three groovy horrors from the groovy minds at AIP and one of Franco's best know exploitations. A couple in Turkey stop in at their neighborhood sex cabaret and watch a vampire devour her dance partner. Unfortunately for everyone, this evening of entertainment puts Linda right in the sights of Countess Carody. The vampire doesn't just want a light snack but to own our blonde heroine body and soul. Will Linda escape the vampire's clutches or will she find nothing but death and madness in the embrace of Vampyros Lesbos? Donna and her swinging friends have a party to contact her recently deceased mother. The gathering is lead by her mother's boyfriend, a mysterious and dashing Bulgarian noble who just a few months ago moved into the not at all scary old mansion outside of town. Before they know it the whole group is in peril as one of the female members vanishes and her boyfriend turns up dead. Can these meddling middle age kids stop the bloodshed or will they all fall victim to Count Yorga, Vampire? A stake can't keep a bad vampire down. Count Yorga and his brides rise from their graves to find they now live next door to an orphanage. Taking a shine to a teacher, Cynthia, the Count begins a diabolical plan to make her one of his brides. This time our middle age kids go to the police for help but it all maybe too late and The Return of Count Yorga will deliver him triumphant? The brilliant musician and theologian, Dr. Aton Phibes, was thought to have died in a car accident four years ago after hearing about the death of his wife on an operating table. Now someone is taking revenge against the medical team with the Plagues of Egypt. Did Phibes survive? Who is the beautiful woman reportedly seen in the vicinity of each murder? Will our intrepid detective inspector solve the case or will the plagues play out to avenge The Abominable Dr. Phibes? All that and Dave gets hyped, Tyler keeps it mellow, and Kevin shames us all with his shame bell. Join us, won't you?Episode 227- Two Quarrys Don't Cover the Price of Korda

Vampyros Lesbos - "I'm Under Her Spell" Turns out that 1971 was a good year for Vampire Lesbian flicks - last week with Daughters of Darkness & this week we cover the quintessential Lesbian Vampire movie - VAMPYROS LESBOS (1971) directed by Jesus Franco. This one stars the gorgeous Soledad Miranda as the Countess Nadine Carody, the luminous progeny of a legendary vampire who lures in the stunning Linda Westinghouse played by Ewa Stromberg. This beautifully shot, fun & sexy take on the Dracula legend takes a deliciously arthouse approach and spins the legend on his head adding some new "vamp rules." Any director is always an auteur. Of course, if he's a bad director, he's a bad auteur. It's his point of view that matters. So in that sense, I think that I am an auteur, maybe a very bad one, but I don't discuss that. The Exorcist with Synapse Films’ Don May Jr. For our latest ep, Jinx welcomes Don May Jr. to the show. A producer who owns and operates Synapse Films (the Blu-ray and DVD label responsible for releasing such titles as Thriller - A Cruel Picture, Vampyros Lesbos, Demons and Demons 2, Popcorn, Tenebrae, Phenomena, and the upcoming 40th Anniversary release of Suspiria), Mr. May has chosen to discuss William Friedkin’s 1973 film adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist. An undisputed horror classic, The Exorcist is actually the first film to make a return appearance on Scream Addicts (it was previously chosen by filmmaker Tom McLoughlin - listen here. During their discussion, Mr. May and Jinx touch on the first times they viewed the film, the power the film still holds, and their feelings on the film’s follow-ups. Along the way, they weigh the theatrical cut against “The Version You’ve Never Seen”, why The Exorcist is a bucket list release project for Mr. May and the part of the film that never should’ve received the Terminator 2 “morph” treatment. It’s a wonderful and lengthy conversation with an excellent guest, and it’s one we hope you enjoy! Visit Synapse Films here. Make certain to scream at us on Twitter! @ScreamAddicts @Jinx1981

In the second episode of Daughters of Darkness, Kat and Samm continue their three-part discussion of lesbian vampire films, this time with a focus on European cult directors like Jess Franco, Jean Rollin, and Walerian Borowczyk. They begin their discussion with the career of the prolific Jess Franco, who produced a number of films with lesbian vampire themes, namely Vampyros Lesbos (1971). This starred his first muse, Soledad Miranda, as the mysterious Countess Carody, who sunbathes by day but thirsts for blood at night. Franco also adapted Bram Stoker’s novel with the relatively traditional Count Dracula (1970), but continued to explore his own perverse variations on vampire mythology in Dracula’s Daughter (1972) and the explicit Female Vampire (1975), with his longtime partner Lina Romay. Also explored is the work of French director Jean Rollin, known for his dreamlike, often surreal vampire films such as The Rape of the Vampire (1968), The Nude Vampire (1970), The Shiver of the Vampires (1971), and Requiem for a Vampire (1973). While these films infrequently use overt depictions of lesbianism, they are generally concerned with pairs or groups of female vampires banded together against the world. In films like Fascination (1979), about blood-drinking socialites, and The Living Dead Girl (1982), the tragic tale of a love that survives beyond death, Rollin expanded on his early themes. The episode concludes with a discussion of a few films that touch upon the legend of historical murderer and alleged blood-drinker Elizabeth Bathory. Most importantly is Belgian film Daughters of Darkness (1971), the podcast’s namesake, which follows a newly married couple who encounter an elegant and possibly ageless woman at a seaside hotel.

Warning: Trailer Contains Nudity! This is a Spanish movie that was filmed in German. The director is Jesus Franco who is known for many movies that delve into violence and perversion. This vampire movie is heavy on the nudity and it's obvious because of the title. This movie is still available on Amazon and Netflix.
