El crimen había sido espantoso: secuestro, violación y homicidio. Todas las leyes del mundo aplicarían la pena máxima. De ahí que el estado de Washington, Estados Unidos, condenara a Westley Allan Dodd a morir ahorcado. Dodd no se opuso al largo juicio, ni a la decisión del jurado ni a la sentencia que dictó el juez. Su rostro evidenciaba cierta humildad. Tanto es así que estando de pie en el cadalso, y con la soga al cuello, manifestó: «Yo estaba convencido de que en este mundo no había paz, pero me equivoqué. Aquí en mi celda he hallado paz y esperanza en el Señor Jesucristo.» Momentos después, su cuerpo se balanceaba al extremo de la cuerda. Dodd había sido un hombre malvado que, con toda conciencia y a sabiendas, secuestró a tres niñas, las violó y las mató simplemente por el placer que le produjo. Nunca en su breve vida, de sólo treinta y un años, mostró buenos sentimientos. Sin embargo, en la cárcel alguien le dio el mensaje que todo ser humano debe escuchar siquiera una vez en la vida: el mensaje de Cristo. Y Dodd lo comprendió y aceptó a Cristo como Señor de su vida. Este hombre, cargado de tremendas culpas, hizo dos cosas. Reconoció que era pecador, de lo cual ningún jurado ni ningún juez lo hubiera convencido. Y arrepentido sinceramente, aceptó a Jesucristo como su único Salvador. En los últimos días de su vida, halló la paz y la esperanza que nunca había tenido. Surge la pregunta: ¿Será justo que un criminal, que ha cometido tantos hechos horrendos, reciba tan fácilmente la vida eterna? Otra pregunta: ¿Debe aplicársele la pena capital al que humildemente se arrepiente y demuestra un cambio total de carácter y de vida? Respecto a esta última pregunta, la relación con Dios, por sincera que sea, por profundo que haya sido el arrepentimiento y por maravilloso que haya sido el cambio de vida, no anula la deuda que alguien tiene con la ley. La deuda tiene que pagarse. En cuanto a la primera pregunta, la Biblia dice que Dios no muestra favoritismos. Todo el que a Él viene, cualquiera que haya sido su pecado, si con absoluto arrepentimiento se humilla ante Él como su Señor, recibe perdón. Es más, la muerte de Cristo en la cruz borra todos sus pecados. Entreguémosle nuestra vida a Cristo. La gracia de Dios nos ayudará a someternos a las leyes humanas, y tendremos además la vida eterna. Episode 133 - Throughout the 1970s and '80s serial pedophile Westley Allan Dodd molested dozens of children in the Pacific Northwest. Although caught for his crimes more than once Dodd never did any real prison time. Feeling invincible, Westley's fantasies became more violent and depraved until the fall of 1989 when he crossed the line between child predator to multiple murder. On Labour Day weekend in Vancouver, WA. park Westley murdered two brothers, 11- and 10-year-old Cole and William Neer and nonchalantly walked out of the park undetected. In the fall of 1989, in Vancouver, Washington, a short, 29 year-old man named Westley Allan Dodd raped and murdered three young boys. The boys were brothers Cole and William Neer, ages 10 and 11, and four year old Lee Iseli. Content Note:Sexual violence, suicide and capital punishmentA few weeks later, police arrested Westley at movie theater after he tried and failed to abduct another boy. He quickly confessed to the three murders. The prosecution sought the death penalty, and Dodd pled guilty.Death penalty cases take a long time due to all the appeals built into the process. These appeals are designed to make sure the state hasn’t made any mistakes in the death sentence. They check for things like juror misconduct, incompetent defense lawyers, new evidence. Death penalty cases take years, sometimes decades.Westley Allan Dodd did not want that. Instead, he wanted to be executed as quickly as possible.In letters to the Supreme Court of Washington, Dodd urged the court to allow him to waive his right to appeal his death sentence. He believed he deserved to die for what he did, and wanted it done as soon as possible. Dodd was what’s known as a “volunteer”–someone who gives up their rights in order to hasten their own execution. The Death Penalty Information Center cites about 150 cases of “volunteers” in the United States. Dodd’s case sparked debate both among people who supported and opposed the death penalty. Some argued he had the right to choose whether the court would review the validity of his death sentence. Others argued that the law ensures that all defendants have due process whether they want it or not. In the meantime, Dodd continued to advocate for his own execution in interviews and in exchanges with his pen pals. He said he felt remorseful, and even wrote a self-defense booklet for kids to learn how to stay safe from men like him. The booklet was called “When You Meet A Stranger”.The debate made its way to the Washington Supreme Court.  In a 7-2 ruling, they decided that Dodd did, in fact, have the right to waive his remaining appeals. After just three years on death row (5 years shorter than the national average at that time) the State of Washington hanged Westley Allan Dodd. These appeals are designed to make sure the state hasn't made any mistakes in the death sentence. They check for things like juror misconduct, incompetent defense lawyers, new evidence. Death penalty cases take years, sometimes decades.Westley Allan Dodd did not want that. Instead, he wanted to be executed as quickly as possible.In letters to the Supreme Court of Washington, Dodd urged the court to allow him to waive his right to appeal his death sentence. He believed he deserved to die for what he did, and wanted it done as soon as possible. Dodd was what's known as a “volunteer”–someone who gives up their rights in order to hasten their own execution. The Death Penalty Information Center cites about 150 cases of “volunteers” in the United States. Dodd's case sparked debate both among people who supported and opposed the death penalty. Some argued he had the right to choose whether the court would review the validity of his death sentence. Others argued that the law ensures that all defendants have due process whether they want it or not. In the meantime, Dodd continued to advocate for his own execution in interviews and in exchanges with his pen pals. He said he felt remorseful, and even wrote a self-defense booklet for kids to learn how to stay safe from men like him. The booklet was called “When You Meet A Stranger”.The debate made its way to the Washington Supreme Court. In a 7-2 ruling, they decided that Dodd did, in fact, have the right to waive his remaining appeals. After just three years on death row (5 years shorter than the national average at that time) the State of Washington hanged Westley Allan Dodd.
