Our favorite horror writer is back at it again! This week we read Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix, a truly harrowing mixture of pregnancy horror, social horror, and eels. In this episode, as you can probably imagine, we talk a lot about abortion rights, fucked up pregnancy stuff, and infanticide. Like honestly probably way too much discussion of infanticide, oopsie, sorry about that. Proceed with caution accordingly. One of the rare movies that actually made me scream aloud)And lastly, if you want to read/listen to Cyrus's story mentioned at the end of this episode, it's not about pregnancy but it is very much horror: Hemorrhage on Pseudopod.org (not .com as we say on the podcast, I'm a fool)Support the show

Another year ending means another Wrap Up episode where we go over our top picks for the year, as well as discussing some other titles we've seen in 2023. While most of the films we do cover here as our favorite viewings for this year are from the last few years, they are not all from 2023. But as we've pointed out many times before, if you're watching it for the first time, no matter when it was released, as far as we're concerned, it still counts as a new movie to you! 2023 has been a great year for the horror genre, especially when you look outside the U.S., which we all hope everyone out there does, because there are some incredible titles coming from Spain, Malaysia, Argentina, Japan, and more. So hopefully our listeners are not restrainted by films that are "only in English", because those folks are sadly missing out on some incredible cinema. For this episode, we strongly suggest you have a notepad and pen close by to jot down some titles because we think we're going to give you more than a few that we feel you should be checking out. And a special HUGE thanks to those that continue to tune in and listen to us ramble on about the genre we love. With this being our 60th episode, it seems our following is growing day by day, so thank you for your continued support and in 2024, we'll continue to help you Discover the Horror! Films mentioned in this episode: Accion Mutante (1993), The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023), Anthropophagus (1981), Bewitched (1981), Birth/Rebirth (2023), The Black Demon (2023), The Blackening (2023), Blair Witch Project (1999), Blood Flower (2022), The Boogeyman: The Origin of the Myth aka El hombre del saco (2023), The Boys from County Hell (2020), Cobweb (2023), Cocaine Bear (2023), The Conference (2023), The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), The Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), The Dark and the Wicked (2020), Don't Listen (2020), Dracula (1931), Exists (2014), The Exorcist (1973), The Exorcist: Believer (2023), Evil Dead Rise (2023), Fragile (2005), Frankenstein (1931), Godzilla Minus One (2023), Grabbers (2012), The Grandmother (2021), Halloween (1978), Hallucinations (1986), Harpoon (2019), The Haunted Palace (1963), Hellhole (2022), Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022), The Innocents (2021), Infinity Pool (2023), The Invisible Man (1933), I See You (2019), Juan of the Dead (2011), Knock at the Cabin (2023), The Lake (2023), The Last Horror Film (1982), The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023), Lifeboat (1944), Mad Heidi (2022), Meg 2 (2023), Megan (2023), Mr. Frost (1990), The Mummy (1932), The Nameless (1999), The Offering (2023), One Cut of the Dead (2017), The Outwaters (2022), The Rape of the Vampire (1968), Red Spirit Lake (1993), Renfield (2023), The Sadness (2021), Satanic Hispanics (2022), Satan's Slave (2022), Scream VI (2023), Severance (2006), Sister Death (2023), Shaky Shivers (2022), Shaun of the Dead (2004), Skinamarink (2022), Sleep Tight (2011), Talk to Me (2023), Terrified (2017), Thanksgiving (2023), They Look Like People (2015), Troll Hunter (2010), El Vampiro (1957), Venus (2022), The Vigil (2019), The Village (2004), When Evil Lurks (2023), Witching and Bitching (2013), The Wolf Man (1941), Willow Creek (2013), The Witch's Mirror (1962)
Charlie and Matt join Caitlin to talk about Huesera, a recent Mexican-Peruvian horror movie that features a new take on the monstrous motherhood trope. We explore themes around identity and family, and we look at motifs regarding spiders, ritual, and religion. Definitely worth a watch. Forgive our many bone(r) jokes and our exaggerated pronunciation. Tangents include: the Virgin of Guadalupe, cool aunts, La Milpa, Christmas lights, Christmas trees, movie sequels, cereal, desserts, soccer (el futbol, as we deftly clarify), weird dreams, signs we'd been taken over by a pod person, sleep styles, and an FMK for comfort items. Shoutout to our buddy Golob, who was named dropped a few times. Nobody puts baby in the refrigerator!
In typical late Hispanic fashion we present our 1st pick of Hispanic Heritage Month: Huesera- The Bone Woman (2022)! Legend has it that La Huesera is a ghosty Mexican bitch that likes to collect bones in the desert- which never happens in this film. Dana explains why Hispanic history month starts on the 15th of September & no, it's not b/c we are late for everything. We dive into a Spanish woman's supposed role in Hispanic society, personal family experiences, gay acceptance in a Spanish household & a Missy Elliot black magic spell. Oh, and Cyndi Lauper makes a surprise cameo.
Nobody thought we could do it but we made it through our next 9 random movies! In this episode we look back at what sticks out in our withered memories of the movies we have put ourselves through: Huesera: The Bone Woman, The Wind and the Lion, The Servant, Hidalgo, Save The Green Planet!, The Ladykillers, Wild Canaries, The Dig, and Saint Maud. How did we feel in the cold light of day about all these movies? Listen on and find out! Follow, rate, and review our podcast on all audio platforms here: https://linktr.ee/15krandommoviereviews We are Colin and Niall, two movie enthusiasts from Ireland who wanted to take a different approach to movie watching and reviewing. So we came up with the idea to randomly choose a movie from Metacritic's all time movie list (which at the time of starting our podcast was over 15,000 movies, hence the title!). We take pleasure in bad movies as well as good! We hope you enjoy our podcast and follow us on your favourite podcast platform (or Youtube). Random movie 1580 on Metacritic's all time movie list was Huesera: The Bone Woman. Our second movie in a row with a colon in the title. Weird. Anyway, this is a Spanish horror movie and as both Colin and Niall are not the biggest horror fans, will they hide behind their sofas or laugh out loud? Listen on and find out! Official Synopsis: Valeria's (Natalia Solián) joy at becoming pregnant with her first child is quickly taken away when she's cursed by a sinister entity. As danger closes in and relationships with her family become fractured, she's forced deeper into a chilling world of dark magic that threatens to consume her. A group of witches emerge that could be her only hope for safety and salvation, but not without grave risk. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/15krandommoviereviews/message

A pregnant woman! Motherhood! Crunching bones! This week, the boys practice pediatrics without a license only to meet HUESERA: THE BONE WOMAN!!! There isn't too many Mexican body horror movies that has a personal statement on parenthood and the agency of the mother. A intellectually penetrating film, by Michelle Garza Cervera, that has a sharp visual sense and a grounded story. Huesera is a raw personal tale but is there any real suspense? Plus, in TV CORNER we talk about episode 3 of season 2 of YELLOWJACKETS!!! And so much more! This week we chat with Michelle Garza Cervera! She's a punk rocker and filmmaker whose debut feature film Huesera: The Bone Woman is currently streaming on VOD and will be available on Shudder in May. We chat about her roots in punk rock, discuss some of her favorite punk bands, and dig into the queer aspect of Huesera and how the movie subverts and transcends what we've historically seen in horror films centered around queerness. After this fantastic conversation, we explore David Lynch's The Elephant Man and why it was Michelle's Scarred for Life pick. We dig into the way the film makes the viewer a monster, the idea of humanity, and the existential realization that people are the monsters. This was easily one of our favorite conversations on the podcast. You can follow Michelle on Twitter and Instagram. Make sure to support her film on VOD. Huesera is going to be on a lot of people's best of the year lists, we're pretty sure so give it a watch. The weekly movie edition goes lite this week as Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy look over five new movies. They include one of the best horror films Steve saw at a film festival last year (Huesera: The Bone Woman) and a darkly comic thriller about proving one's manliness that is one of the best films of the early year (The Integrity of Joseph Chambers). Steve looks at the second film from a quickly rising filmmaker (Of An Age) and the pair look at a detective yarn from an older master (Marlowe). Finally, the week would not be complete without a look at the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania) 0:00 - Intro 1:16 - Huesera: The Bone Woman 5:22 – The Integrity of Joseph Chambers 17:57 - Of An Age 25:24 - Marlowe 39:43 - Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania 58:45 - Outro
We're cracking our knuckles in anticipation of Michelle Garza Cervera's feature debut Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022), which tackles pregnancy and post-partum in ways that are comparable to The Babadook and Hypochondriac.Featuring a stunning lead performance by newcomer Natalia Solián, Huesera has great foley work, some good jump scares, and lots to say about queerness and motherhood. Plus: a different kind of fridging scene and an ending that we want to hear from parents aboutQuestions? Comments? Snark?
