Join our adventurers as they delve into the mysterious dungeon rumored to be the domain of the Goblin King. The party faces off against hobgoblins at the entrance, making a strategic decision to disarm and leave them behind as they explore further into the depths. Inside, the team splits their attention between a town hall project and unraveling the intricacies of a community in decline. Strange occurrences in town suggest that simple magics are beginning to fail. Meanwhile, hidden in the dungeon, they find signs of underground life, valuable treasures, and unusual encounters. A friendly goblin, Raglag, warns them of an unfriendly wizard and his apprentice, leading to tense negotiations and signs of a power struggle within the ranks of creatures living below. As alliances are cautiously formed, the adventurers grapple with decisions of combat versus diplomacy. In the gloom, potential threats lurk in every shadow, from goblins and wolves to formidable orcs and ogres. Our heroes must navigate a treacherous environment and decide how best to handle the dangers they face while uncovering the truth of this forsaken place.

He is also a fashion designer, one who has collaborated with the iconic David Bowie on his 2008 fashion line for Target. This episode is a little different. This is the first of our commentary-style feature-length episodes that allow you to watch along as we chat about the movie in real-time. For our first attempt, we picked an old favorite: Labyrinth (1985). This Jim Henson project is perhaps remembered best for David Bowie's [performance] as the Goblin King but let's see how this one plays in 2025. Is it still the all-time classic we remember it to be? Join in the conversation by sending your feedback to videojunkyardpodcast@gmail.com. Your feedback on the format of this show would also be greatly appreciated as we will consider doing more of these in the future. fm2tufvs

Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast! Next week is Thanksgiving, a holiday many of us celebrate by spending time with our families… whether we want to or not. Can you believe my family banned me from bringing the mashed potatoes just because of the time I piled them up into the shape of a mountain and screamed “THIS MEANS SOMETHING” while serving them? My family has no sense of humor. Or appreciation for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.On this week's episode I decided to share a few family films… not necessarily films made for families, but ones that feature families. Sure, some of them are non-traditional family units, but as you all know, we can't choose our families and sometimes we have to accept our relatives for who they are. Even if they're chainsaw-wielding cannibals. My first pick of the week is is the 1974 classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, featuring the Sawyer family. (If you're looking for a conversation starter over Thanksgiving dinner, you can now tell your family you know Leatherface's last name.) The legend of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is bigger than the film itself. It takes a while before our sacrificial teens get into trouble, and in full disclosure only one person gets killed by a chainsaw, which isn't much of a massacre. The film is nowhere near as gory as people think and people have ripped the idea off hundreds of times in other films, but it's always fun to go back and watch the source of so many horror movie tropers. Good for watching before or after Thanksgiving dinner, but probably not during.Next is 1966's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and George Segal. Stylistically, this film always reminded me of 12 Angry Men. Both films (both of which were based on plays) have the ability through dialog to take you on an emotional ride. Both films made strong impressions in me. In Virginia Woolf, George and Martha (Burton and Taylor) invite a younger couple over for drinks after a dinner party. As the alcohol continues to flow, pointed barbs turn to nasty cuts as the couple weaponize their guests against one another. It's a masterclass in acting and you'll have to play close attention to fully understand everyone's motivations and, ultimately, the ending. Woolf is a tragic and powerful film that remains only one of two films to ever be nominated for every Academy Award category it was eligible for. My third recommendation this week is 1985's The Stuff. The Stuff is a delicious and addictive treat that may also be alive and turning people into mindless zombies. After The Stuff ravages the ice cream industry, a former FBI agent nicknamed Mo is hired to figure out what The Stuff is and who is marketing it. Meanwhile, a boy named Jason has discovered the dark side of The Stuff and fights with his family who demand he joins them. Before long Mo and Jason along with ice cream mogul Chocolate Chip Charlie team up to take on The Stuff. Remember, “Enough is never enough!” The Stuff is a little horror and a little comedy with a whole lot of thinly disguised social commentary sprinkled on top. Fun 80s schlock that might have you double-checking the whipped cream on top of your pumpkin pie.Lastly we have Labyrinth, released in 1986. One of Jim Henson's greatest film achievements, Labyrinth tells the story of Sarah, a girl who wishes the Goblin King would take away her young brother Toby… and immediately regrets it. Sarah must work her way through Jareth's labyrinth, with both help and detours presented by its inhabitants. Despite occasionally getting annoyed with our family, there's no stronger bond. While there's a good chance you've seen Labyrinth, I'm worried that maybe your kids, nieces or nephews, or grandkids haven't. This is a great film that deserves to be shared with the next generation. The Vat Spawn watch the Goblin King polymorph the missing Ariana from a beautiful pop star into a grotesque goblin. A hundred goblins cheer him on as the transformation occurs. “Goblins is people?” Dragon Warrior queried. Bat Alchemist lights a joint from the demon dog's fire breath to regain his lost health. Then he reverse engineered Warlock Roc's listening device to play Enrique Iglesias through the tone-stone walls, causing them to gather in one area for a makeshift dance party. Turns out goblins are obsessed with Enrique Iglesias. Tiger Wizard takes advantage of the distracting dance party, springs through the door, and casts Nitar's Fireball, serving a dish of fiery destruction. The Goblin King breathes fire from the demonic face in the center of his torso, but Tiger Wizard and Bat Alchemist move out of the way. The goblins swarm the Vat Spawn as they fight-dance to Enrique Iglesias.Dragon Warrior sits atop the demon dog Lotto and charges into the room. Lotto breathes fire into the goblin horde as Dragon Warrior swan dives into the goblins as he casts Pognif Explosion exploding himself and a single goblin to bits… and then he reforms.Bat Alchemist uses his soulbound weapon Clippy's ability to hit multiple targets. In return for his services, Clippy demands to be of assistance immediately and makes Bat Alchemist do calisthenics to get better at attacking.Tiger Wizard dances through the goblin horde to whiff hitting the Goblin King, and notices that he's wearing a wooden mask. Warlock Roc attempts to sneak away, but trips on her high heels into the goblin horde. Dragon Warrior wades through the gobs to give Warlock Roc a healing potion, which brought her back to full power and made her glow pink. The Goblin King grabs Tiger Wizard and begins polymorphing him into a goblin. Tune in next week to see how goblined up Tiger Wizard gets.ANNOUNCEMENTSPAX Unplugged: December 6th through 8th in Philadelphia. One of Dave's childhood favorites, despite a fair sledding from mates, is up for scrutiny this week! And with a 16 year old Jennifer Connely heading up against a middle aged pop star, what could possibly go wrong? directed by Jim Henson, was an ambitious blend of puppetry, live-action, and cutting-edge visual effects for its time. The film was a collaboration between Henson and executive producer George Lucas, with a screenplay by Monty Python's Terry Jones. Conceptual artist Brian Froud, known for his work on The Dark Crystal, played a significant role in designing the fantastical creatures and the world of the labyrinth itself. The movie's central character, Jareth the Goblin King, was brought to life by David Bowie, who also contributed original songs to the soundtrack, adding a surreal, musical dimension to the film. With a cast that included young Jennifer Connelly and over 100 puppets, the production involved complex puppetry, animatronics, and special effects to bring the magical world to life. The film was shot primarily at Elstree Studios in the UK, where elaborate sets were built to depict the vast, dreamlike maze. Henson's Creature Shop faced technical challenges, especially with creating characters like Hoggle, a puppet requiring multiple operators to control its facial expressions and movements. Though the film was not a box office success upon release, Labyrinth gained a devoted cult following over the years, praised for its imaginative design, memorable characters, and Bowie's iconic performance. The film's mix of fantasy, music, and pioneering practical effects has since solidified its place as a beloved classic in fantasy cinema. This week my guest is the amazing ALICE LOWE! Alice is an incredible comic actor who you'll know from her films Prevenge and Sightseers, as well as tons of other comedy including Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. We chatted in advance of her new film TIMESTALKER (out in all good cinemas NOW) and covered all manner of crushes from Peter Pan, to Jareth the Goblin King. I absolutely loved chatting to her and sort of wish we'd done it after I'd seen the film (I have, it's great) as there are so many Crushed themes to explore within it. We'll have to come back for Part 2... And just a reminder that I'm going to be interviewing KERRY GODLIMAN at the Cheerful Earful festival on Saturday 19th October - tickets available here: https://cheerfulearful.podlifeevents.com/festival/crushed-by-margaret-cabourn-smith-live-from-cheerful-earful-podcast-festival-19th-oct-tickets Love and kisses, MCS xxx Learn more about your ad choices.
