Former SAA board chair, Dudu Myeni has been sentenced to five years by the Johannesburg Magistrate's court for defeating the administration of justice or pay a 120-thousand rand fine. Half of the fine has been suspended, provided she does not repeat the same offense within the next five years. Myeni pleaded guilty to defying an order by the Chairperson of the State Capture Commission, Raymond Zondo to not disclose the identity of a protected witness. Myeni mentioned the name of the witness, who was identified by Zondo as Mr. X, twice during her testimony in front of live television cameras last year. For some reaction, Elvis Presslin spoke to Right2know Campaign National Coordinator Verushka Memdutt
Ace forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan takes a hard look at the first volume of the report by the Zondo Commission, offering a "so far, so good" verdict. But he draws on personal experience to share how the National Prosecuting Authority should approach miscreants like Dudu Myeni - and put them behind bars without stumbling through years of courtroom treacle. Classic O'Sullivan - courageous, forthright and opening eyes to the murky underworld.
The first part of the commission into state capture's report found that SAA chairperson Dudu Myeni ran the airline under a cloud of fear, intimidation, secrecy, and paranoia. The report, handed over to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday, found that Myeni's arrival at the airline saw an increase in wasteful expenditure, corruption, and low staff morale, as well as growing tensions among board members. The commission recommends that the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority take steps to recover monies obtained unlawfully. South African Cabin Crew Association Spokesperson, Zazi Nsibanyoni-Mugambi gives us their reaction to the report

In a new development in the case of the killing of Lindani Myeni, new unedited footage has emerged on the events before Myeni was shot dead by police in Honolulu, Hawaii. KwaZulu-Natal rugby player Lindani Myeni had been on the phone with his wife Lindsay. He had told his wife he would be home “soon”, but Lindsay and their two young children would never hear from him again. Myeni was shot by officers in Honolulu's police force while they were responding to a call about an alleged burglary in progress. He was outside and unarmed at the time of the shooting. Police shootings have been a hot issue in the US for many years. Research by renowned American news agency the Washington Post and the business data platform Statista indicate fatal police shootings in the US are increasing, with 292 civilians shot, 62 of them black, in the first four months of 2021. In 2020, there were 1,021 fatal police shootings. The rate of fatal police shootings among black Americans is much higher than that for any other ethnicity, standing at 36 fatal shootings per million of the population as of April 2021.However, there is little outrage for Myeni, or sympathy for his widow and children.

According to now widowed Lindsay Myeni, in the last hours of Lindani Myeni's life he sought spiritual protection, displayed erratic behaviour and told his wife Lindsay that he had seen his ancestors. Later that evening the 29-year-old former KwaZulu-Natal rugby player took a drive to clear his head and never returned to their Honolulu, Hawaii home in the US. The next day Lindsay found out her husband had been shot four times near their house during a confrontation with three Honolulu police officers outside a luxury six-bedroom Hawaii home which he had entered.
Court documents filed by Lindsay Myeni's attorney, James Bickerton, claim the trio of police officers who shot Lindani Myeni, had failed to announce that they were police officers. According to the court papers: “The failure of the officers to announce they were police officers or declare their purpose was not only unlawful in these circumstances, but doing so with a gun drawn also negligently and recklessly communicated to Mr Myeni that they were not police officers, but rather 'Maglite muggers' or 'Maglite murderers,' because reasonable people are aware that police officers will announce themselves as officers in order to make their commands to stop, restrain or arrest a person to be lawful commands.”
The family of Lindani Myeni and its legal team say that Honolulu police have many questions to answer regarding the circumstances that led to Myeni's shooting by police. Bongani speaks to Bridget Morgan-Bickerton, lawyer of the Myeni family. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The widow of Lindani Myeni who was shot by Honolulu, Hawaii Police in the United States last week, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. During a press conference in Honolulu, family attorney Jim Bickerton accused police of attacking Myeni without announcing themselves as law enforcement. Bickerton said the KZN-born rugby player was merely defending himself when blinded by a police Maglite. They have also cited race as a determinative factor in how the police approached Myeni before shooting him four times. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.
Former Independent Consultant at Eskom, Nicholas Linnell revealed that he was appointed by former SAA board chairperson Dudu Myeni to head an inquiry into challenges facing Eskom which also included loadshedding. Linnell says on the 8th of March 2015 Myeni invited him to former President Jacob Zuma's official residence in Durban to discuss the details of the investigation into Eskom's affairs. Linnell says Myeni was acting on Zuma's instructions who wanted an inquiry to be conducted at Eskom. Linnell was testifying at the state capture commission of inquiry.
The North Gauteng High Court has declared former South African Airways (SAA) chair Dudu Myeni a delinquent director for life. The application was brought to court in 2017 by Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse and the SAA Pilots Association, to declare Myeni a delinquent director in terms of the Companies Act. The organisations accuse Myeni of plunging the national carrier into financial chaos while she was chairperson.
The high court in Pretoria has heard that former board chairperson of the South African Airways , Dudu Myeni is dishonest, flouted governance procedures and should therefore be declared a delinquent director. That's the argument brought forward by the the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) which took Myeni to court. OUTA and SAA Pilots Association (SAAPA) approached the high court in a bid to declare her a delinquent director for life. The organisations accuses Myeni of obstructing key deals and interfering in operational issues. The court heard closing arguments from both parties on Friday. Phumzile Mlangeni reports...

It remains to be seen if indeed Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba will attend the Eskom State capture Inquiry happening in parliament today. Gigaba bunked parliament last week and submitted an unsigned sick note. While we are at it, there are reports that the Former SAA Board Chairperson Dudu Myeni, the Gupta brothers and Duduzane Zuma, who are central to this Eskom inquiry, won't be attending today. Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Zukiswa Rantho says Myeni excused herself from today's meeting sighting an illness, while the Gupta brothers, through their Attorney, said they won't be attending because they are out of the country. We speak to Parliament's Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Zukiswa Rantho
The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises looking into the mismanagement of state funds in state-owned enterprises says the failure by Former SAA board chair Dudu Myeni to appear before it borders on undermining the process they've undertaken. This morning Myeni sent an sms to the secretary of the committee stating that her lawyer was overseas and she still needs to check the legality of her appearing before the committee....Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Chairperson of the inquiry for the portfolio committee on public enterprises, Zukiswa Rantho.
South African Airways new board is expected to be officially announced at a media briefing in Pretoria later today. Businessman JB Magwaza has been appointed as the new SAA chairperson and will replace Dudu Myeni. Myeni has been criticised for her leadership of the airline.
The DA has welcomed the reported removal of Dudu Myeni from the South African Airways (SAA) board. The opposition party has accused Myeni of damaging the airline, saying she should have been removed along time ago. The DA says that the reported restructuring of the SAA board includes an experienced aviation expert, after a year a calling for this since the current board was appointed in September last year. We get reaction from Aviation expert, Editor and Publisher of SA Flyer Magazine,Guy Leitch.
Parliament has refused to be briefed by the Chairperson of the board of South African Airways, Dudu Myeni. Myeni arrived without other board members at Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance to brief it on the entity's quarterly report. She was accompanied by the CFO and acting CEO. The committee said it would be futile to engage Myeni alone while there are allegations that she has not been attending board meetings for some time. Meanwhile, the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) says it plans to lay charges against the SAA board over alleged corruption and irregular expenditure which they claim amounts to more than 1 billion- rand.
