Former Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo, says he is doubtful whether Parliament had put in place measures to prevent corruption from taking place, as per the recommendations from the Zondo commission. He delivered the keynote address at the four day 15th Commonwealth Regional conference for heads of Anti Corruption Agencies in Africa, taking place in Cape Town. Zondo chaired the commission of inquiry into state capture, from 2018 to 2022. Among others, the commission found that Parliament failed in its duty to effectively hold the executive accountable during the period of state capture. Addressing delegates today, Zondo reflected on whether the country's fight against corruption is better than before the commission or not. He added that he is doubtful whether Parliament has made progress to introduce measures to strengthen anti corruption systems... Zalene Merrington reports
In this episode of the BizNews Briefing, Alec Hogg spotlights a riveting interview between Chris Steyn and former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach, who discusses the absence of consequences for state capture crimes, and her call for a justice-led political reset. Breytenbach also reflects on the country's “republic of no consequences” and the first Zondo-related prosecution attempt. Internationally, Trump's proposed tariffs on foreign films send shockwaves through South Africa's booming movie industry, while his broader economic nationalism stirs political unease from Australia to Canada. In the latest edition of the Sunday Show with Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement (UIM), he speaks about the role of money in the race for the next president of the African National Congress (ANC) just as billionaire Patrice Motsepe emerges as another likely contender. De Beer looks at the continuing “onslaught” from former President Jacob Zuma, whose MKP has taken another ward off the ANC. He points out the big differences in the strategies of MKP and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to the issue of Afrikaner self-determination. Following the latest EFF march on an Afrikaner community, he also warns: “I fear one morning, that when they go to the gates of such a place, they're to meet with arms. The police are going to be in the middle and people are going to get very cross…If one person in that group shoots, we will have a Marikana.” De Beer slams President Cyril Ramaphosa's move to appoint a Commission of Inquiry to establish why Apartheid-era crimes - testified to at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) - have not been prosecuted, saying: “We are still sitting with Zondo. So, we can go dig up old cows, but we can't lock up the present.” He also examines the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of four members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) whose bodies ended up in the Hennops River. And he hails Mr Justice Nathan Erasmus who handed down a guilty verdict last week in the case of the missing Joshlin Smith. “Make this man the Judge President…What a jurist.”
Former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has highlighted the protection of whistle-blowers as one of the measures to fight corruption in South Africa. Speaking at the Nelson Mandela University's Fisheries Law Enforcement Academy's Anti-corruption Conference, Zondo also highlighted the importance of whistleblowers in the fight for a corruption-free South Africa and the role of the Government of National Unity.

Over the past few years, people in South Africa have been questioning the role corruption has played in their country's recent fortunes. In June, the Zondo commission - an inquiry named after it's chairperson Chief Justice Raymond Zondo - reported widespread corruption during the presidency of Jacob Zuma. It found that ANC leaders, including former and current government ministers, allegedly participated or encouraged looting at a massive cost to the country. Mr Zuma is standing trial on allegations of corruption which he denies. But the ANC has expressed its appreciation to the commission and said it would engage with its findings and take steps to address them. Chief Justice Zondo also suggested that electoral reform is needed to stop corruption in the future. He wants South Africans to directly elect their president, rather than voting for a political party which picks the head of state. So, could this be part of the answer? #AfricaDaily
