American women are, on average, paid 84 cents for every dollar men make, according to the Department of Labor. This wage gap has persisted despite near-record rates of women's participation in the labor market, with wage gaps even larger for women in minority populations, and it's estimated that pay parity will not be achieved until 2052. Should policy interventions address these disparities, or is it more important to recognize and honor women's personal decisions and find another way to look at the gap Those in favor of fixing the gap see it as a point of fairness and equity that would bring economic benefits, such as enhanced family incomes and increased productivity, and say that new policies are needed urgently to dismantle systemic barriers stopping women from earning more. Those who aren't in favor argue wage disparities reflect individual choices regarding career paths, work-life balance, and tenure, rather than systemic discrimination. Latino women's workforce participation rose by 5%, yet they continue to earn less than white men. Despite some women moving into higher-paying roles, overall wage growth remains slow. Mary Lazarus Legacy in Civic Engagement Fund Celebrating Women in Society The gender pay gap is unfair, inequitable, and even illegal – paying women less than men for the same work has been against the law in the US since 1963. And yet, based on today's full-time, year-round wage gap, women entering the workforce stand to lose $398,160 over the course of a 40-year career. This “lifetime wage gap” exists across the country: in every state, women's career losses based on today's wage gap would amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars—and in 12 states women's career losses would amount to more than half a million dollars. If progress continues at the same glacial rate as it has since 1960, it will take some 30 more years for women workers to reach pay equity with men.  The average Asian American and Native Pacific Islander (AANPI) worker would need until April 3 – the day of our forum – to make as much money as their male counterparts had earned by the end of the previous year. Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women working full-time, year-round are paid just 92 cents for every dollar paid to non-Hispanic white men. The wage gap within the Asian American community is often overlooked, and it's far from monolithic. For example, Chinese women earn 83 cents to a white male's dollar, Indian women earn $1.07, Bhutanese women earn 52 cents, and Nepalese women earn just 48 cents for every dollar earned by white men. Recognizing these disparities is the first step toward achieving true pay equity for Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian women.  What's being done to close the gender wage gap in Central Ohio for all women? Among other initiatives – The Columbus Commitment – a voluntary, employer-led pledge dedicated to closing the wage gap and fostering pay equity – has now been signed by over 400 Columbus-area employers to help spotlight equitable pay practices. Starting in the late 1990s, historians like Deborah Simonton and Judith Bennett argued that if we take a step back a look at the longue duree of women's history, the evidence suggests that even as Europe's economies transformed from market places to market economies, women's work--and the value placed on gendered labor--was and continues to be remarkably (and frustratingly) consistent. There was not, in fact, a transformative moment ushered in by capitalism, industrialization, or post-industrialization for women. Even when factoring in race, urban/rural divides, and class, European (and American) women's labor was always valued less than men's, whether in the “household economies” or guilds of the medieval period, on the factory floors of the industrial era, or in the office cubicles of our more recent history. Today we're going to take a step back and look at the longer history of the gender wage gap, where we can see the continuity in women's work from the 14th century to the present. If you want to laugh, have a look at the shambles that unfolded this week in Australia as a result of the new law that makes companies publish their gender pay gaps.  It turns out there is one, in some industries it's worse than others and it proves what those of us who have argued against such measures were right all along.  If you know what the other person earns, in some way, shape or form, your head is going to explode.  It is of course, and this is the real story, based on a falsehood.  There is no such thing as a gender pay gap in the sense wages are not handed out for gender. They are handed out for a job and/or experience and/or skill, sometimes also age.  Wages also vary depending on the business, specifically, and the industry, generally.  Where you get the so-called gender gap is by comparing apples with spanners and thinking it makes sense.  Women often choose careers and jobs and hours for different reasons than men. That's not right or wrong, nor is it black or white.  What it is, is individual and everyone is allowed to choose what they want for themselves.  Some examples this week; they went to town on fashion brands where there was a pay gap and where management was largely male, and sales were largely female. This was presented as a problem.  What they failed to ask, as they always fail to ask, is why were there men in management? Had they deliberately rejected all females because they were females, or was the male who happened to be in the job the best person who applied?  A gender pay issue is only an issue if you overtly because of gender deny a person a job. That, most of the time in this day and age, does not happen.  They have taken a nuanced and complex problem and the Government, for reasons best known to themselves, most likely woke, decided to make a law that will cause needless angst and solve nothing.  Good for headlines though and water cooler chat, which is what Australia has busied itself with this week. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And what would it take to close it?Claudia Goldin is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. She's written numerous books on women in the workforce and the history of labor. And so those are the ones that women, disproportionately and for reasons that have to do with social norms, can't take. And so, therefore, in different-sex couples, there is a decision that we're not going to have couple equity. I'm going to take the flexible job, and you're going to take the greedy job. And so, by removing the fact that we no longer have couple equity, we throw gender equity under the bus.Are people constrained by norms?56:12: Norms arise because they have a function and are often kept in place and enforced by generations of people, whom we often call our parents and grandparents. And it would be very, very good if these norms changed as fast as society is changing.The difference between norms and beliefs32:26: It's required for a norm that there be a set of arbiters outside that care about the norms and go like this when you're not following the norms. And when those people go away, then you can do whatever you want. Norms require that there be an enforcer. An arbiter, okay? Beliefs are different. Beliefs are things like religion. No one isn't necessarily enforcing that. It's something that you believe in and preferences. Are you looking left and right while charting and wondering if your colleagues are earning more money than you? If you're in the know about the AAPA Salary Survey or you don't understand the world of salary and effective negotiation, you're not alone, we didn't really know either. There is so much goodness in that AAPA Salary Survey report (and in 2022 it's interactive!) So while the healthcare industry has lost it's mind with compensation and brand new baby nurses are being paid $30,000 sign on bonuses, learning about the physician associate gender wage gap is something you are going to want to do. The PA Gender Wage Gap. What's the first thing you think of when you hear that? Maybe you're thinking - well, I work part time or I have better boundaries than my male PA colleagues - but here's the thing - you are doing the same job! Maybe you are skeptical about the data but have a healthy curiosity to learn more. The AAPA Salary Survey revealed in 2018 that female PAs are making, on average are earning $11,500 less per year than their male-identifying colleagues. This means that for every $1.00 that male colleagues are making, female-identifying PAs are earning only $0.90. The mean male PA salary is nearly $12,000 per year more than the mean female PA salary! $11,500 invested in a solid index fund over the course of a 30 year career compounds to be 4.5Million dollars at the age of retirement. It's 2022 and we STILL aren't paid equally for equal work. The gap exists across the board but is much worse for black and brown women. The past two years the Equal Pay date was in March, since the pandemic it's now in mid-April. Women in the workforce were affected more than men with the closures of childcare centers, remote schools, and caring for aging parents. We have work to do.
