The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://youtu.be/Tmg_SsMSqQA Streamed live on Oct 5, 2022. Host: Fraser Cain ( @fcain )Special Guest: Nothing transcends human differences here on our tiny planet than sharing the wonders of the night sky. For 50 years, Mike Simmons has been sharing and spreading astronomy with the world, both locally and internationally. Tonight, Mike joins us to share his newest venture, Astronomy for Equity, as he continues his calling to share astronomy with local communitites around the world. Astronomy for Equity brings together existing resources, expertise, networks, and communities to create opportunities for STEM growth in marginalized, isolated, and underserved areas. Mike Simmons is a long-time friend of the WSH. He is probably best known by members of our community for having founded (and lead) Astronomers Without Borders for over 14 years. In 2020, Mike retired from AWB and joined Blue Marble Space Institute of Science as an Affiliate Research Scientist - which allowed him to found Astronomy for Equity. Mike is also on the Board of Directors of the International Dark-Sky Association. You can learn more about Astronomy for Equity by visiting their webpage https://astro4equity.org/about/. Be sure to also check out their impressive list of advisors (https://astro4equity.org/our-team/) which includes such familiar names as Universe Today's Nancy Atkinson, "Bad Astronomer" Phil Plait, and former WSH guest Astronaut Nicole Stott! With these folks on the team, Astronomy for Equity can't help but succeed! If you are interested in helping Astronomy for Equity, they are currently running a crowdfund campaign to help students in Libya learn Astronomy. If you are so inclined and would like to contribute (no amount is too small!) please go here: https://astro4equity.org/please-help-... To stay up to date with Mike and his various projects, you can follow him on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Mike.Simmons... as well as Twitter: https://twitter.com/Astro_MikeS Regular Guests: Dr. Pamela Gay ( https://cosmoquest.org/x/ & @starstryder ) Dr. Nick Castle ( @PlanetaryGeoDoc / https://wanderingsci.com/ ) Dave Dickinson ( http://astroguyz.com/ & @Astroguyz ) This week's stories: - Globular clusters! - Juno's Europa flyby! - The Solar cycle! - Gravitational lenses! - Where did Ryugu come from? The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZD5nnScDks It's too bad Mars is such an interesting place, because it's actually one of the most difficult places to visit in the Solar System, especially if you want to bring along a lot of luggage. That planet is a graveyard of missions that didn't quite make it. As our ambitions grow, and we think about exploring Mars with humans - maybe even future colonists - we're going to need to solve one of the biggest problems in space exploration. Successfully landing heavy payloads on the surface of Mars is really really hard to do. This video was inspired by the incredible writing from Nancy Atkinson on Universe Today: https://www.universetoday.com/7024/th... In honor of the announcement that NASA has chosen SPACE-X to build the Artemis lunar lander... and also in honor of Philip's receiving his second shot of the Pfizer vaccine, we present this encore presentation! (Shh, what I really mean is that this shot has knocked me out good and I've got VAX HANGOVER and am stuck in bed until it passes. Don't get me wrong, PRAISE SCIENCE for the vax! And... enjoy this super fun, very popular episode! — PS) —- It's Opposite Apollo Day! Our special guest today is Nancy Atkinson from Universe Today! Her amazing new book is "Eight Years to the Moon: The History of the Apollo Mission." We ask: What The IF we lived on the Moon and had to send the first mission to EARTH? This lunacy gives rise, as with all our IFs, to an amazing about of information about the REAL Apollo mission, and the science, engineering and chutzpah it took to do it. The only thing that could have been harder would have been if we... lived on the Moon and had to send a Moon-person to the Earth and, as Moon-Kennedy proclaimed, "return them safely to the... MOON!" If you wanna visit the Earth, if you want to get off it again, how you gonna do it? OMG, you gotta bring your own Saturn V with you, so good luck with that. Landing on the Earth is hard! It's one of our most crunchy and delicious meals of Sci and Fi yet. Check it out. --- NANCY ATKINSON is a science journalist and author with a passion for telling the stories of people involved in space exploration and astronomy. She has been with Universe Today since 2004, and also writes for Ad Astra. Her new book on the Apollo program is titled “EIGHT YEARS TO THE MOON: The History of the Apollo Missions” and shares the untold stories of engineers and scientists who helped make the Apollo program so successful. The book comes out just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the first to land on the Moon. You can buy it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/162414490X/ Her first book “INCREDIBLE STORIES FROM SPACE: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Missions Changing Our View of the Cosmos” (2016) tells the stories of 37 scientists and engineers that work on several current NASA robotic missions to explore the solar system and beyond. Caltech astronomer Mike Brown called the book “delightful” and Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of the New Horizons said “Incredible Stories From Space was a “great read.” See more reviews and purchase the book at Amazon, or Barnes and Noble. “Incredible Stories From Space” was published by Page Street Publishing, a subsidiary of Macmillan. Sorry for the lack of a Hangout last week, we had massive internet fail in Fraser's home city. This week, we talk about: Building a real starship Enterprise, preparations for the annular solar eclipse, investigation into the Gaia theory, fuel for black holes, Hubble and the transit of Venus. We're joined by Amy Shira Teitel, Jason Major, Nancy Atkinson, Nicole Gugliucci, Phil Plait.
This is a Google+ Hangout we did to discuss the announcement of Earth-sized planets discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. Moderated by Fraser Cain from Universe Today/Astronomy Cast, with Nancy Atkinson from Universe Today, Dr. Phil Plait from Bad Astronomy, Emily Lakdawalla from the Planetary Society and Alan Boyle from MSNBC's Cosmic Log.
A brief retrospective with help from Nancy Atkinson of Universe Today.
