Featuring: Ashley Korenblat is a founding Managing Director for Public Land Solutions, a non-profit recreation economy consultant that works from the bottom up directly with communities transitioning away from fossil fuel extraction, and from the top down, on public land legislation and policies that affect this transition, such as oil and gas leasing and land management planning.   Ashley's involvement with public land began when she served as President of Merlin Metalworks, a bicycle manufacturing company in Cambridge, MA. During that time she became chair of the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and worked with the organization to establish MOUs with federal, state, and local land managers. Ashley has spent the last 15 years at Western Spirit Cycling, an outfitter based in Moab, Utah who runs multi-day trips throughout the US, and is one of the largest holders of recreational permits on the public lands system. Ashley was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2003. She was appointed to the Utah BLM Resource Advisory Council for two terms, as well as the Outdoor Recreation Economic Ecosystem Taskforce created by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman. Ashley created IMBA's Public Lands Initiative and has testified before Congress on the recreation economy. She recently served on The Western Governor's Association's Get Out West Committee. Show Highlights:  In this episode of Channel Mastery, Kristin is joined by Ashley Korenblat, Managing Director for Public Land Solutions, to talk about how business leaders can support climate change solutions within their organizations. While there are many ways that business leaders can help combat climate change, Ashley explains how supporting public lands and informing policy around public lands is essential for the outdoor industry and its consumers.    Kristin and Ashley also speak to the recent passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, supply chain implications, public land solutions, oil and gas land + energy policy, and what you can do to support the climate through your business.  RELATED LINKS Ep. 192 with Adam Cramer VerdePr.com/blog/channel-mastery-192-adam-cramer-inflation-reduction-act Public Lands Solutions - publiclandsolutions.org Western Spirits Cycling - westernspirit.com Outerbike - outerbike.com Kristin on LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/kcarpediem Verde Brand Communications - VerdePR.com

As it happened, I made a last minute trip to Bentonville for the launch of Fezzari's new Signal Peak XC mountain bike. Which happened to coincide with Outerbike and the Big Sugar gravel race. And since I don't like having any downtime whatsoever, I squeezed in an interview with Gary Vernon, who I'll sum up as the orchestrator of all things bike advocacy and infrastructure in Bentonville, Arkansas.   If you haven't been to Bentonville to ride, all I can say is this: When you finally do go, and I do mean WHEN, not IF, your mind will absolutely be blown. Talking about bike lanes and access and trails is one thing. But seeing how they've made it an integral part of their entire community and city planning is honestly beyond words. But that doesn't mean we can't try, so if you're at all involved in your city's planning, or your local bike advocacy group, or you just want to hear what's possible and get inspired to make cycling better in your own community, this episode will absolutely open your eyes to what's possible. In this episode we ask Ashley: What is a “recreational asset?” Is this considered in strictly monetary terms, or are intrinsic values considered as well? How does PLS identify recreational assets and what does a typical plan look like? How significant is the Land and Water Conservation Fund in terms of recreation project funding in the US? Is there an opportunity to work with energy development companies on recreation plans? What are some of the ways trail advocacy groups could improve on their current land management and access strategies? What is the PLS stance on MTB Wilderness access? This year brought countless challenges, but 2020 also granted us with opportunities we likely didn’t expect for some of our businesses and brands.  Outerbike, the premier experiential consumer cycling event dedicated to helping mountain bikers and gravel grinders find their perfect bike, stepped up in a unique way in 2020 instead of retracting and taking figurative shelter. When Outerbike’s expanded in-person events were cancelled, the small and mighty team designed and launched a digital tool designed to help lead consumers to the bike that’s best for them.  And what a necessary resource! Please add in stats on bike growth here, thank you! Ashley Korenblat, founder of Outerbike, joins me again on the show (she was also featured in episode #86) with a special announcement.  Launching this week is Outerbike’s interactive guide leading consumers to the bike category that’s best for them: Your Friend in the Bike Business. This interactive digital resource takes away the intimidation of walking into a bike shop for help as a newcomer to the sport, but is also tailored to work for experienced riders, whether you’re looking for a new bike or just exploring options.  The cycling industry saw huge waves of newcomers to cycling and outdoor recreation in 2020. Now businesses of all sizes have the opportunity to catch, collect and keep this newcomer. Listen today to see how Ashley and her team are creating a welcoming and inclusive environment to newcomers and experienced cyclists alike. I for one was super inspired to see this small, entrepreneurial company take massive action to nurture our amazing newcomers to cycling and outdoor. I hope you enjoy this episode and share it with as many cycling enthusiasts - new and experienced - as you possibly can!  Ashley Korenblat is CEO of Western Spirit, founder of Outerbike and managing Director of Public Lands Solutions.

Tyler Benedict, founder and publisher of Bikerumor.com, is my guest this week on Channel Mastery. Eleven-plus years ago, Tyler started Bikerumor.com and during that time, he's seen a lot of evolution in terms of how consumers use and share his content, and how his site factors into the consumer decision journey.     In this episode, Tyler gives his well informed take on what's working, and what's not, with endemic content today. You'll learn how his team approaches and optimizes content across multiple channels, including the Bikerumor.com website, blog, Youtube channel, newsletter, podcast, and through events. We also talk about the ongoing evolution of the media landscape as well as how brands can best serve super busy media covering events like Sea Otter and Outerbike. I'm fairly certain that Tyler is one of the hardest-working journalists in cycling today, and he keeps pushing into new frontiers. Check out his upcoming Peak Content Summit, a gathering of some of the brightest minds in content marketing today taking place in Ashville, NC., March 11-13, 2020.

Today, I’m joined by Ashley Korenblat, the founder of OuterBike (and a host of other VERY impressive titles). The first OuterBike was a relatively radical idea: Instead of giving consumers the opportunity to demo a bike in a few circles around the parking lot, bring the bikes to iconic trails the consumer wants to ride. For the first Outerbike, Ashley called in all sorts of personal favors and connections to get brands to bring their fleets to Moab, Utah, on their way home from Interbike. A decade later, Outerbike has expanded to four incredible riding destinations and is a pilgrimage for thousands of enthusiast cycling consumers.
