6.7 Sacred Conversations + Honest Questions (wk1) God, Heaven, What Follows Death?

The VUE Church Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 41:21

This conversation explores honest questions about God, heaven, and life after death, presenting God not as a doctrine to master but as the love, grace, and goodness that draw us toward deeper humanity. Heaven is described less as a distant destination and more as God's renewing presence breaking into the world now—experienced whenever we forgive, love, seek justice, and participate in bringing God's kingdom to earth. While Scripture leaves many details about the afterlife unexplained, it offers hope that death is not the end, that we are being transformed into the fullness of who we were created to be, and that our calling today is to live into heaven's reality through love.

Logan Holloman | Next Gen Pastor | May 24, 2026 Referenced Scripture: Luke 16:19-31, Colossians 1:16, Romans 1:28-31 Reflection Questions: 1. When you hear the question, “How could a loving God send people to hell?”, what emotions or assumptions immediately come to mind? How did this message challenge, deepen, or reshape the way you think about that question? 2. The sermon described hell as “the final form of exile from God” rather than simply punishment. How does viewing the Bible through the lens of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration change the conversation about judgment? 3. In Luke 16, the rich man's deepest issue was not wealth, but a heart curved inward on itself. Where are you tempted to become spiritually indifferent—to God, to others, or to suffering around you? 4. The cross shows Jesus entering our exile to bring us home. What stands out most to you about the idea that God personally stepped into judgment and suffering for humanity? 5. The sermon ended with the question: “Who am I becoming?” What habits, loves, priorities, or patterns are currently shaping your heart? Are they moving you toward deeper communion with God and others—or further inward toward self-centeredness? What's your next step? Connect: We'd love to connect with you! Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | May 24, 2026 Referenced Scripture: Genesis 2:20-25, Genesis 3:7, 1 Corinthians 5:12-13, Hebrews 4:15-16, Romans 12:1-2 Reflection Questions: 1. How would you explain the biblical teaching about God's plan for a healthy and holy expression of our sexuality? Do you agree or disagree with this teaching? Why or why not? 2. How would you describe the culture's view of human sexuality? 3. How do these different views create tension for a person that wants to follow Jesus? How have you personally experienced or observed that tension? In your opinion, how has the church done at navigating that tension in the culture? What have we done well? What have we done poorly? Explain. 4. Every person is mixture of hundreds of desires that are aligned and misaligned with the perspective of Jesus regarding sexuality. How is a person to navigate these desires as a follower of Jesus? How are we to discern what to do with our desires? (especially those that don't align with Jesus?) How can we learn to say no to those desires? 5. Why does submitting our desires to the redemptive care of Jesus require a lot of trust in His character and message? What do we need to believe about Jesus to trust him with our sexual desires? 6. Do you believe that Jesus lived a fulfilling life? Why or why not?Do you think that Jesus had all the same desires that we have as humans? Why or why not?Jesus lived his life as an unmarried man, who never had sex, and never had children, and had all the same temptations that we have (Hebrews 4:15-16)Do you think that we can also live a fulfilled life without those desires fulfilled? Explain. What do we need to experience a fulfilled and meaningful life if some of those desires are never fulfilled? 7. What is the role of the community of believers in helping us process the desires and brokenness of our sexuality? What makes involving others in this difficult or uncomfortable? How can you take steps to involve other people in helping you navigate your sexuality and desires? 8. Why is it important for us to acknowledge the reality that we all experience brokenness in our sexuality? What is the danger of only pointing to the brokenness of others in the culture and not naming/owning/confessing our own brokenness? 9. What is your next step in bringing your sexuality and desires into full alignment with the redemptive teaching of Jesus? Who will you process this with? Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | May 17, 2026 9am Referenced Scripture: John 14:6, Ephesians 2:8-9, Colossians 3:12, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 Reflection Questions:1. In your experience of our culture, what do people tend to appreciate about Jesus and what do they find difficult about Jesus? 2. Read John 14:6 — Why does Jesus' exclusive claim cause resistance in our culture? How have you experienced people's response to the exclusivity of Jesus? Explain. 3. Gandhi said, “Religions are different roads converging to the same point. What does it matter that we take a different road, so long as we reach the same goal? Wherein is the cause for quarreling?” — What makes this view from Ghandi more popular and a more acceptable way to look at differing religions and worldviews? 4. “All religions basically teach the same thing.” (Agree/Disagree) Why? Explain. What are some ways that different religions can overlap? 5. Law of Non-Contradiction: Contradictory propositions cannot both be true in the same sense at the same time. Put Aristotle's law in your own words. Does this make sense to you? Why or why not? Give an example of how this is true. 6. What are some core truth claims of different world religions that are contradictory to one another? Does it make sense to you that they can't all be true at the same time? Why or why not? 7. What are some core truth claims of Jesus and Christianity? How could someone investigate if these claims are true? Are you convinced of the truth claims of Jesus? Why or why not? 8. What are some unique beliefs of Christianity that are different from other world religions? 9. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 — Put this verse in your own words. Why is the concept of grace unique from other world religions? Explain why salvation is the work of God and not the work of people? What is our role in salvation? Why is boasting not a response to grace? 10. How does the exclusivity of the message of Christianity create urgency to share the message with the world? What is the posture of a Jesus follower that is communicating the message of salvation? (Read Colossians 3:12) 11. Why is there no room for arrogance in the posture of a follower of Jesus sharing the message of Jesus 12. How is God nudging you to take a next step as a result of this message? What if the dry, weary place you're in isn't something to escape—but a place where God is working? So many of us know that quiet middle space: you're not in crisis, but you're not exactly flourishing either. You're tired, spiritually dry, disconnected, or simply going through the motions. It's not dramatic enough to call a breakdown, but something in you knows you're weary. In this episode, Dr. Alison and author/priest Tish Harrison Warren explore what grows in these weary places—and why seasons of spiritual dryness, burnout, and languishing aren't signs that something is wrong with you. They may be part of how God forms you. Together, they talk about aridity, resilience, stability, and what it means to stay present to the life you actually have instead of constantly looking for a way out. You'll discover: Why spiritual dryness doesn't mean you're failing The difference between depression, burnout, and languishing What the desert fathers and mothers can teach us about resilience Why “staying in your cell” can become a path of formation How ordinary repair, routines, and relationships shape us over time What it means to let where you are do its work How hope changes the way we endure hard seasons This conversation offers a counter-cultural invitation: you don't have to rush out of the weary place. There may be something growing there. More Resources:

Brian Priebe | Executive Pastor | May 10, 2026 Referenced Scripture: Acts 17:16-27Reflection Questions:1. What's one thing that stood out to you from the sermon and why? 2. How would you describe your relationship with science? 3. What are Biblical examples of how science and faith can come into contact? 4. One of Brian's main points was that believers need to use the right tools for the right tasks as we share our faith. What examples of this do you see throughout the Bible or even just in regular life? 5. Brian's focal point was that science best answers questions related to HOW the natural world works and faith best answers questions related to WHY the natural world is. Do you agree or disagree? Why? 6. Read Acts 17:16-27 What elements of Paul's interactions with the Athenians offer clues to how we might engage people that have a science bend? 7. What would the church look like if everyone took Paul's cues in interacting with people outside the faith, especially those where science is most influential? 8. What are your thoughts around Genesis 1 and the definition of a day? 9. Brian cited the use of Yom as the Hebrew word for day in Genesis 1 as also being the same word describing various periods of time. He referenced Genesis 2:2, 4:3, 43:9 and 44:32. What do you think about the various uses of Yom in Genesis? 10. What might be a next step for you related to the interaction of science and faith and the people in your sphere? Prayer can feel simple until you try to do it out loud, in a group, or from a place of disappointment. In this episode, we begin an honest conversation about prayer—what it is, what it isn't, and some of the ways we may misunderstand it. Prayer is a relationship. Not a script. Not a performance. Not a way to get God to do what we want. We're not claiming to have all the answers, but we believe exploring the ideas and questions about prayer together is worth it. As we start this series, we want to hear from you. What questions, doubts, or experiences do you have about prayer? Send them our way—we'd love to include them in future episodes. Contact us at thefathersbusiness.com or find us on social media.

He reframes outgrowing a career as awareness and growth, not failure, and suggests the “spark” that once drew you in is a key signal. He offers an exercise to review past jobs, hobbies, and projects to identify what you loved, why you moved on, and the patterns that reveal what fulfills you, including embracing a need for variety and new challenges. Today, we explored the reality of doubt in the life of faith, drawing from the story of Habakkuk—a prophet who dared to bring his deepest questions and frustrations directly to God. Habakkuk lived through a time of spiritual revival under King Josiah, only to see everything unravel under the wicked reign of Jehoiakim. Surrounded by political chaos and spiritual decline, Habakkuk's heart was broken as he watched his people turn from God and face the threat of destruction from brutal foreign powers. In his confusion and pain, he did not turn away from God, but instead turned toward Him, voicing his honest doubts and asking, “Why?”God's response to Habakkuk was not what he expected. Instead of promising immediate rescue or revival, God revealed that He was already at work in ways Habakkuk could not understand—even using the Babylonians, a ruthless nation, as part of His plan. This answer only deepened Habakkuk's confusion, showing us that sometimes, even when God answers, it doesn't resolve all our questions. The story invites us to wrestle honestly with our doubts, recognizing that doubt is not the enemy of faith, but can be a catalyst for deeper trust and a more personal relationship with God.We also reflected on the story of Thomas, the disciple who doubted, and how his journey led him to a faith that was truly his own. Doubt, rather than being a sign of spiritual weakness, can be the soil in which authentic faith grows. The key is not to run from our questions, but to bring them to Jesus, who meets us with patience and love.Ultimately, what we need most in seasons of doubt is not answers, but God's presence. Answers may not heal our pain or restore what we've lost, but the assurance that God is with us—steadfast, loving, and unafraid of our questions—gives us the courage to hold on. Faith is not about having everything figured out; it's about trusting the One who holds us, even when nothing makes sense. In the space between our questions and God's answers, we find that His presence is enough.Chapters[00:00] - Welcome[01:00] - Introduction: Life-Changing Encounters[03:55] - Wrestling with Doubt and Asking “Why?”[06:00] - Context: The World of Habakkuk[07:43] - Josiah's Revival and Judah's Decline[09:09] - The Spiritual and Political Crisis[12:17] - Habakkuk's Honest Questions[13:56] - Personal Story: A Father's Pain and Doubt[16:33] - God's Surprising Answer[18:31] - God at Work in Unexpected Ways[20:13] - The Babylonians: God's Unimaginable Plan[22:27] - Habakkuk's Confusion and Struggle[24:14] - Doubt as a Pathway to Deeper Faith[27:04] - Thomas: From Doubt to Devotion[30:51] - Faith in the Midst of Unanswered Questions[32:52] - The Limits of Answers and the Need for God[35:53] - Holding On When Life Doesn't Make Sense[38:22] - Waiting and Watching in the Silence[39:12] - Presence Over Answers[40:44] - Spoken Word: “A Shadow of a Doubt”[46:46] - God's Love in Our Doubt and Closing PrayerWelcome, EVC!

I'm joined by the brilliant and beautifully honest Dr. Heather Thompson Day for a conversation on spiritual wrestling. Heather's latest book, What If I'm Wrong? Navigating the Waves of Fear and Failure explores what happens when the faith you once relied on starts to unravel. Heather shares openly about her father's battle with Alzheimer's, the spiritual crisis it triggered, and the years she spent in what she calls “spiritual drowning.” We talk about attachment, disappointment, failure, and the unexpected ways God shows up when everything else is falling apart. This conversation is a powerful example of how doubt and faith can co-exist. If you've ever wondered whether you're allowed to question your faith—or felt like you were losing your grip on God—this episode is for you. We explore: What happens when the God you believed in no longer matches your reality How therapy helped Heather not just psychologically but spiritually Why what feels like failure may be something deeper—and more redemptive The unexpected miracle Heather experienced at the end of her long season of doubt This isn't a story of tidy answers. It's a story of holding on, even when you're not sure what you're holding onto.

Send us a textHave you ever wondered about the power of a well-placed question? Pesach Sheni—the "Second Passover"—offers a fascinating glimpse into how questioning can actually reshape religious practice and deepen spiritual understanding. This spiritually charged day commemorates an extraordinary moment when a group of Israelites, deemed ritually impure and thus ineligible to participate in the Passover offering, approached Moses with a heartfelt question: "Why should we be left out?" Their genuine inquiry led to something remarkable—a new commandment in the Torah, giving them a second chance to fulfill this central mitzvah one month later. What's truly striking, as we explore in this episode, isn't just the accommodation that was made, but how this story elevates the very act of questioning itself. These individuals weren't merely complaining—they were earnestly seeking understanding and inclusion. Their names were immortalized in Torah not because of their status or power, but because they dared to ask an honest question. As the great Mir Mashgiach taught, had they merely thought about their complaint without coming forward, no new commandment would have been enacted. This principle extends throughout Jewish tradition—from Moses himself, who constantly questioned to clarify divine law, to the daughters of Tzelophchad who challenged inheritance customs, to the great Rabbi Akiva Eger, remembered for his penetrating questions. Judaism values questions over answers because sincere inquiry opens new perspectives and unearths deeper truths. The lesson of Pesach Sheni speaks directly to us today: Never stop interrogating, questioning, and inquiring with honesty and truth. The more we ask with genuine interest, the more we discover. Don't Let Doubt Define or Defeat You | Restored & Sent Have you ever felt like your questions and doubts disqualify you from faith? You're not alone. The reality is that doubt is something virtually all Christians experience at some point in their faith journey. We'll challenge the one-dimensional view of "Doubting Thomas" by revealing six dimensions of his faith journey that are often overlooked. Through Thomas's story in the Gospel of John, we discover a disciple who was: 1. Willing to Sacrifice - When others hesitated to follow Jesus into danger, Thomas boldly declared, "Let us also go that we may die with him" (John 11:16) 2. Prepared to Follow - Even when uncertain of the destination, Thomas honestly asked questions to better understand and follow Jesus 3. Fully Honest - Rather than pretending to believe, Thomas expressed his doubts openly 4. Supported with Evidence - Jesus didn't rebuke Thomas for his questions but provided the evidence he needed 5. Stronger Than He Gets Credit For - Thomas made one of the strongest confessions of faith in scripture: "My Lord and my God!" 6. A Faith That Spreads to Others - Thomas's journey from doubt to conviction continues to help countless believers You'll walk away with a new perspective to never allow a season of doubt to limit your future walk with and effectiveness for Jesus. God is big enough to handle your questions and has given us all the evidence we need. Whether you're currently wrestling with questions or walking alongside someone who is, this message offers practical hope that doubt can be a doorway to deeper belief rather than a dead end. Big Idea: When God lets you down, ask Him why. Problem: We feel God has let us down but never question Him directly. Solution: Go and question God directly and He will give you hope and knowledge of Him. Vision: Together, be a shelter for honest questions that leads to hope and intimacy with God. Steps to Change: 1. Acknowledge how God let you down. 2. Question Him in His presence. 3. Find Hope in God's presence. 4. Enter into a deeper knowledge of God. Step of Faith: Stop questioning God alone. Bring your doubts about God directly to Him. Trust Him enough to hear you, enter your struggle, and be your hope. You will come out knowing God and being known by Him more than ever. Short Summary: God encourages us to confront Him with our feelings of disappointment in Him. He is our shelter to question Him, and the church is a shelter for honest questions about Him. “Come now, let us reason together.” Isaiah 1:18
