A Taste of Evil (1971), Snowbeast (1977), This House Possessed (1981) We're back on the small screen for our fourth dive into the world of made-for-TV horror—which should tell you something: we love these things. Maybe it's nostalgia from growing up in an era when you couldn't stream whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Or maybe it's because some of these films were just plain good—tight, creepy little stories that managed to leave a mark. This time around, we're not talking about the crown jewels of the genre, but rather three solid, middle-of-the-pack entries: well-made, weirdly memorable, and wildly watchable. You've got disturbed minds, ski lodge mayhem, and a haunted house that's a little too into you. If the stories don't grab you, the casts just might. Films mentioned in this episode: 1941 (1979), Abominable (2006), Alien (1979), Amityville Horror (1979), Asylum (1972), Beetlejuice (1988), Beyond the Door (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), City of the Dead (1960), City Slickers (1991), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Double Indemnity (1944), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Duel (1971), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), Halloween (1978), House by the Cemetery (1981), House that Wouldn't Die (1970), Horror of Dracula (1958), I, Desire (1982), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Jaws (1975), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Night of the Creeps (1986), The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Walker (1964), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), Psycho (1960), Re-Animator (1985), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), Scream of Fear (1961), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Snowbeast (1977), Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974), Suspiria (1977), A Taste of Evil (1971), Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962), This House of Possessed (1981), The Tingler (1959), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Videodrome (1983)

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson and Bob Dylan. Episode Roundup: The Cowpunchers make some connections between this and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Amy wants to know who left their gun in the outhouse. Stu curses Bob Dylan for making him feel feelings. Mel uncovers the secrets of the "coot suit". Unexpectedly, this movie seems to have it out for birds.

The Changeling (1980), The Woman in Black (1989), and Fragile (2005). Ghost stories have been around since the very beginning of the art of storytelling itself. When done well, it can be simple and still send chills up your spine. When it comes to ghost stories in film, we can still keep it simple, have an effective story, and still give the audience the creeps enough to make them wonder what that noise you just heard. And  here we have three perfect examples in this episode. These kinds of films are especially perfect for the Halloween season, sitting down with some friends and/or family to enjoy this time of year. So if you're looking for particular one, look no further. Movies mentioned in this episode: The Changeling (1980) Fragile (2005) Hereditary (2018) Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973) Poltergeist (1982) Witchfinder General (1968) The Woman in Black (1989)

Our director for this month is the mercurial Sam Peckinpah (1925-1984), who left an indelible mark on American television and cinema over a 30-year career. Despite his many clashes with Hollywood studio brass (and often his own crew) and his early passing at the age of 59, Peckinpah distinguished himself with a singular vision of the Old West and his graphic depictions of violence in films like The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. We'll revisit these films and what the man known as "Bloody Sam" sought to demonstrate with his often polarizing on-screen violence. Title: Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid and Kris KristophersonDescription: Today we are joined again by actor, scholar and Wild West fanatic Jacob Herr to discuss on of the most compelling movies about the legendary Wild West Gunslinger Billy the Kid. The 1973 film “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid” reimagined the story of Billy the Kid. There was almost as much drama behind the scenes of the movie as there was on the screen as director Sam Peckinpaw battled with the actors, producers and film executives in order to make the movie and tell the story of Billy the Kid the way he felt it needed to be told. You can learn more about Beyond the Big Screen and subscribe at all these great places:http://atozhistorypage.com/Click to Subscribe:https://www.spreaker.com/show/4926576/episodes/feedemail: steve@atozhistorypage.comwww.beyondthebigscreen.comhttps://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacyOn Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/groups/atozhistorypagehttps://www.facebook.com/HistoryOfThePapacyPodcasthttps://twitter.com/atozhistoryLearn More About our Guest:Jacob Herrhttps://www.jacobherr.com/Music Provided by:"Crossing the Chasm" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Lee, Daniel, and Paul (briefly), tackle Sam Peckinpah's often misunderstood and abused "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" (1973). Was this epic western, featuring an all-star cast of great character actors, fairly run out of the territory back in its day, or does the "Turner Cut" and the revised special edition from 2005 prove old Sam was on to something, even as his raging alcoholism was starting to take hold of his career's direction? An overview of the major cuts of the film are discussed, as well as just what Peckinpah was trying to say by taking Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett's story and twisting it - messing with the timelines, stretching the truth, and just plain making shit up. Also mentioned: Kris Kristofferson's ass, Bob Dylan's soundtrack and acting ability, and Harry Dean Stanton as a cuck. Listener comments are also covered. "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" IMDB Featured Music: "Knocking on Heaven's Door", "Billy Surrenders", and "Billy 1" by Bob Dylan.

We said we were going to do a western, so we're doing a western! On the docket for this episode is Sam Peckinpah's classic 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, a classic caper film where a sheriff chases an outlaw. In this case, it's James Coburn as the grizzled Pat Garrett and Kris Kristofferson as an old man playing the young Billy the Kid. We talk about Peckinpah's simple plot, the different cuts of the film, how both titular characters are developed, and of course we talk about Bob Dylan's awkward appearances in every scene. We also have Ballast Point's Mango Even Keel Session IPA on the show, but mostly Ryne's drunk on Tin Cup whisky (spelled the old-fashioned way for this film).
