A Taste of Evil (1971), Snowbeast (1977), This House Possessed (1981) We're back on the small screen for our fourth dive into the world of made-for-TV horror—which should tell you something: we love these things. Maybe it's nostalgia from growing up in an era when you couldn't stream whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Or maybe it's because some of these films were just plain good—tight, creepy little stories that managed to leave a mark. This time around, we're not talking about the crown jewels of the genre, but rather three solid, middle-of-the-pack entries: well-made, weirdly memorable, and wildly watchable. You've got disturbed minds, ski lodge mayhem, and a haunted house that's a little too into you. If the stories don't grab you, the casts just might. Films mentioned in this episode: 1941 (1979), Abominable (2006), Alien (1979), Amityville Horror (1979), Asylum (1972), Beetlejuice (1988), Beyond the Door (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), Butcher Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), City of the Dead (1960), City Slickers (1991), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Don't be Afraid of the Dark (1973), Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Devil's Daughter (1973), Double Indemnity (1944), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Duel (1971), Frankenstein: The True Story (1973), Halloween (1978), House by the Cemetery (1981), House that Wouldn't Die (1970), Horror of Dracula (1958), I, Desire (1982), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Jaws (1975), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Night of the Creeps (1986), The Night Stalker (1972), The Night Walker (1964), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987), Psycho (1960), Re-Animator (1985), Salem's Lot (1979), Satan's School for Girls (1973), Scream of Fear (1961), Shriek of the Mutilated (1974), Snowbeast (1977), Strange and Deadly Occurrence (1974), Suspiria (1977), A Taste of Evil (1971), Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962), This House of Possessed (1981), The Tingler (1959), Trilogy of Terror (1975), Videodrome (1983)

Producer's Note: please forgive the echo in this episode. We recorded by candle light in an ancient cathedral in the mountains.Join Dave and Tom as they slip into some leather chaps, pick out their favorite colored hanky and take a sweaty (and judgy) tour of some gay themed horror movies! First off is an incestuous little film about a boy, his deranged mother and lots of milk! Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) aka Night Warning. Starring Susan Tyrrell, Jimmy McNichol, Bo Svenson and an early appearance from Bill Paxton! Next up is a sneaky little release from Vinegar Syndrome called Hanging Heart (1989) which has gay themes ✅ camp appeal ✅ and loads of head scratching ✅.Finally it's a detour to the meat packing district with the legendary Cruising by Exorcist director (not Exorcist 3!) William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino as the very scared looking undercover cop / real actor who doesn't quite know which movie he signed up for. This is the roughest of all trades, folks! Enjoy!

Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bat Woman (1968), Beast in Heat (1977), The Body Snatcher (1957), The Braniac (1962), The Burning (1981), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), Curse of the Crying Woman (1962), The Curious Dr. Hump (1969), Dead of Winter (1987), Doctor of Doom (1963), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Look in the Basement (1973), Don't Open Till Christmas (1984), Driller Killer (1979), Entrails of a Virgin (1986), Eyes of a Stranger (1981), Faces of Death (1978), Fear No Evil (1981), The Gestapo's Last Orgy (1977), Horror High (1973), I Drink Your Blood (1971), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), Maniac (1980), Mortuary (1982), Mother's Day (1980), Nekromantik (1988), New York Ripper (1982), Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Perdita Durango (1997), The Prowler (1981), Psycho (1960), Roar (1981), Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters (1970), Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972), Santo vs. the Head Hunters (1971), Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (1969),Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy (1971), Shock Waves (1977), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Speed (1994), SS Experiment Love Camp (1976), Subspecies (1991), Suspiria (1977), Terrorvision (1986), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Twister (1996), Unhinged (1982), El Vampiro (1957), The Wresting Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964)

Robert Hansen, infamously dubbed the "Butcher Baker," lived a double life as a mild-mannered baker and a sadistic predator. Between 1971 and 1983, Hansen raped 30 and murdered at least 17 women, forever etching his name in the annals of true crime infamy. The Early Years of a PredatorBorn in Estherville, Iowa, in 1939, Hansen endured a turbulent childhood marked by severe acne and a debilitating stutter. These insecurities led to social isolation, breeding resentment toward women who, he claimed, ridiculed and rejected him. As a young adult, he found solace in two things: hunting and his deepening fantasies of dominance and revenge. From Baker to MonsterHansen moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in the late 1960s, where he established himself as a successful baker and a family man. Beneath the façade, however, lurked a methodical killer. Hansen would frequent Anchorage's red-light district, luring sex workers and exotic dancers with promises of money or gifts. Once they were in his control, he subjected them to unspeakable acts of violence. The Hunting GroundHansen's modus operandi was as chilling as it was unique. After abducting his victims, he would fly them in his private plane to remote locations in the Alaskan wilderness. There, he would set them loose, only to hunt them down like animals. Armed with a rifle and a twisted sense of superiority, Hansen turned the vast, snow-covered terrain into his personal killing field. The VictimsThough Hansen's confirmed victims numbered 17, authorities believe the true toll may be much higher. These women were often marginalized individuals—runaways, sex workers, and dancers—whose disappearances were tragically overlooked by society. Their bodies, some found years later, bore the horrifying evidence of Hansen's sadistic games. The Fall of the Butcher BakerHansen's reign of terror came to an end in 1983, thanks to the courage of Cindy Paulson, an 18-year-old sex worker who managed to escape his clutches. Paulson's harrowing account of her abduction and assault gave investigators the breakthrough they needed. A search of Hansen's home revealed an arsenal of weapons, as well as a hidden map marked with the burial sites of his victims.Justice ServedIn a dramatic courtroom revelation, Hansen confessed to the murders to avoid the death penalty. Poor Billy is caught between his crazy aunt Cheryl (the incredible Susan Tyrell), his gay basketball coach, and the homophobic sheriff who thinks Billy is guilty of murder (the incredible Bo Svenson). They all add up to a classic piece of southern gothic horror, a fine melodrama, and one of the earliest slashers. On this episode: a logging truck beheading, incest vibes, defining hag horror, secret promise rings, basketball sabotage, attic remodels, implied necrophilia, axe chases, meat tenderizer battery, copious milk-drinking, and ill-advised text epilogues.

To follow-up our Valentine's Day special on After Midnight, we're reviewing Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker (1981) from director William Asher! What's the connection between the two movies? Like most things on our podcast, it's thoroughly quirky. But whatever the reason, this movie made for a great conversation and made for an excuse to invite a great guest onto the pod: writer John Lees! We've been thoroughly enjoying John's work on comics like The Crimson Cage, Mountainhead and more, so we definitely encourage you to check out John's work on his Big Cartel page here: https://johnleescomics.bigcartel.com/ John also has a terrific Patreon page with lots of behind-the-scenes content, which can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/johnlees And as always, thank you so much for listening! CW: the movie includes elements of incest and sexual assault, and those items are likewise mentioned in the movie discussion To view the links mentioned in our episode introduction: *link to the Transgender Education Network of Texas: https://www.transtexas.org/ *the twitter thread from the George A Romero Foundation: https://twitter.com/theGARFofficial/status/1497381019183423490 *more details on the Tenebrous Press anthology Your Body Is Not Your Body: https://tenebrouspress.com/blog/2022/2/23/submissions-open-for-short-fiction-to-benefit-trans-youth-in-texas

Wow! This classic manages to swaddle some truly transgressive, squirm-inducing discomfort in the gauzy warmth of William Asher's 1950s-60s television eyeball. I don't know what's happening to my body, but I don't like it. For a good time, watch this movie starring Jimmy McNichol, Bo Svenson, Julia Duffy, Steve Eastin, and an unfathomably epic performance from Susan Tyrell. Also, an early-career appearance by "William" Bill Paxton, because Billy needed to be menaced by more enemies! The semester has started, summer is coming to a close, but the Blu-ray reviews are back in full swing. If there was a theme to this month's titles, it would be stellar performances and star personas, with the exception of one title that actually played at the IU Cinema in a long-ago era known as “November of 2019.” Cohen Film Collection has a great double feature of French crime films (The Gang/Three Men to Kill) featuring the magnetic and alluring Alain Delon. Kino Lorber brings us a film featuring a major and culturally significant performance from the noble and charming Sidney Poitier in Lilies of the Field. New addition to the blog Code Red kicks off the spooky season with queer-adjacent horror featuring a movie-devouring performance from the great Susan Tyrell in Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker. And finally, there is my pick of the month, a contemplative and bittersweet piece of cinema from the master of contemplative and bittersweet pieces cinema, Hirokazu Kore-eda's international breakthrough film After Life. I made many great discoveries and I sincerely hope you find something that piques your interest. Give it a listen and I'm sure something will catch your ear and hopefully soon after that your eye. As Pride month comes to a close, we're going out with one of the most subversive and possibly progressive (?) horror movies of the 1980s. Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker takes the psycho-biddy subgenre, throws in a dash of 80s slasher, and goes overboard with incest and homosexuality to create one hell of a lost gem of a movie. Also, we discuss our thoughts the commercialization of Pride in general in quite the old man rant.

Our PRIDE MONTH celebration continues with a look at the truly unusual, blood-streaked 1981 psychological thriller BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER aka NIGHT WARNING. Billy, an orphaned teenager, finds himself being dominated by his increasingly unhinged Aunt Sheryl who's hell-bent on keeping him with her...at all costs. Despite its deceptively simple plot, BBNM is a remarkably layered film featuring a bravura performance from SUSAN TYRELL and enough twisted Greek Tragedy elements to make Oedipus blush. Given the time the movie was made, most surprising of all is its positive portrayal of gay men standing strong in the face of vicious homophobia, making it a perfect choice to round off PRIDE MONTH. For the final week of Listener Request month, at the suggestion of Carmine Menna we're chatting about the bonkers 1982 slasher(?) NIGHT WARNING, also known as BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER! In this episode, Michael doubles down on sitcom facts, Nay criticizes white people lunches, and Mark is low key obsessed with Hot Pockets. Plus, in Tea Time we sip on feuding FYRE documentaries, MOTHER, and LA LLORONA. Find us on Twitter and Instagram: @queerwolfpod You can follow the whole crew here...
