Buckle up, because we're heading back to 1974 and diving into two cinematic sinkholes of desperation, debauchery, and… digging for dead bodies? For Episode 40, Brad's thrown Jake into the grimy, gambling purgatory of "The Gambler," while Jake's plunged Brad into the blood-soaked, tequila-fueled odyssey of "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." First up, Brad's wrestled with James Caan's Axel Freed, a down on his luck teacher in pursuit of one last roll of the dice. Brace yourselves for existential despair, smoky backrooms, and enough high-stakes wagers to make you sweat through your earbuds. Meanwhile, Jake's been grappling with Sam Peckinpah's magnum opus of chaos, "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia." Warren Oates stars as Bennie, a hapless pianist dragged into a grotesque quest for a severed head and a hefty payday. Expect sun-baked highways and more moral ambiguity than a Tijuana back alley. Did Jake find solace in Caan's self-destructive symphony? Did Brad endure the psychedelic fever dream that is "Alfredo Garcia?" And will anyone emerge from this episode with their sanity intact? Tune in, but remember that when it comes to 1974, the only guarantee is that things are gonna get messy. So grab your whiskey, your existential dread, and your metaphorical shovels, because we're about to dig up some classic cinema dirt. Other movies discussed in this episode: Onionhead (1958), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Wild Bunch (1969), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Duel (1971), Straw Dogs (1972), Badlands (1973), Charley Varrick (1973), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Chinatown (1974), Blazing Saddles (1974), The Year Without Santa Claus (1974), The Front Page (1974), The Conversation (1974), Italianamerican (1974), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Lenny (1974), Going in Style (1979), Thelma & Louise (1991), Last Action Hero (1993), The Straight Story (1999), The Road (2009), Django Unchained (2012), The Gambler (2014), Win It All (2017), Uncut Gems (2019), Self Reliance (2023). Revolutionary leader Oliver Cromwell was executed on 30th January, 1661 - despite having been dead for more than two years. His body was exhumed from its tomb in Westminster Abbey on the instruction of King Charles II, who sought retribution for those involved in the trial and execution of his father, Charles I. Along with other Regicides, Cromwell's corpse was disinterred and subjected to public abuse. On the anniversary of Charles I's beheading, Cromwell's head was mounted on a spike and stuck on the roof of Westminster Hall - where it remained for thirty years. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly track the illustrious history of Cromwell's head from that date forth; consider whether the crowd in attendance at the ‘execution' really hated their former Lord Protector as much as their jeering suggests; and explain how the intervention of a future Prime Minister prevented Cromwell's relic being put on public display as recently as the 19th Century… Further Reading: • ‘Oliver Cromwell: Hero or Villain?' Ed Scarborough cut his teeth chasing outlaws like Black Jack Ketchum when he was still a teenager. He'd go on to become a deputy sheriff, constable, Arizona Ranger, and according to those who knew him, Ed was born to a saddle, an excellent marksman, and did not know the meaning of the word fear. Make no mistake about it, Ed Scarborough took down many a sassy bandit over the course of his career. Be that as it may, the toughest opponents he'd ever face turned out to be himself and a rabid skunk. Toss in a little bit of cross-dressing, a shootout with a bicycle, some good ole fashioned homicide and a daring prison escape, and we've got what may be the most absurd tale I've ever had the pleasure to share. Content warning: Discussions of attempted sexual assault. Reprehensible and unrepentant, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA trades in the same extensive violence and fragility-masked-by-corruption that became a trademark of director Sam Peckinpah. Running a seedy bar in Mexico City, small-time lowlife Bennie sees a chance to elevate himself above his station when the titular job lands in his lap. His white-collar employers give him just enough rope to hang himself – and his partner, Elita – as they travel the Mexican countryside to deliver the head of a dead man to the crime boss he crossed. In this episode, we discuss seeing ALFREDO GARCIA at the Trylon after so long; Bennie's tenuous, poisonous drive to assert himself over the people and land around him; and the movie's bizarre, humorous, rage-addled final act. Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. I'm Xander and today we are going to be looking at the new album from Scottish death metalers Man Must Die titled The Pain Behind It All. This is the band's fifth studio album but it is their first album in 10 years! Their previous album Peace Was Never An Option came out all the way back in 2013. I think that Man Must Die is one of the most criminally underrated death metal bands ever. It is a shame that this group is not that well known among the more modern death metal scene. These guys have always been talented in the way that they structure songs musically and have always had interesting lyrical concepts. Let's dive right into this review as we explore these new songs track by track. It all begins with the 30 second intro track titled "OCD". Not much happens in this skipable intro but at the end of it, you hear someone say 'fuck it'. This leads us into our first song "Patterns In The Chaos". I have always enjoyed the djenty style of chug parts especially during the mid-point of this track. Then we get the album title track "The Pain Behind It All" which has a very different sound with its hypnotic approach. It gives us an off in the distance feel in its group vocal choruses. It sounds somewhat uncanny compared to what we're used to which makes it that much more unique. I also really enjoy the part where bassist James Wright lays down some bass lines while playing alone with the drummer. Another outstanding track is "In The Hour Before Your Death" followed by a fun little song titled "Clickhate". Something like that might sound cringey to certain people but drummer Tony Corio makes it fun with his standout blast beats. "Enabler" is one of my more favorite tracks on the album. I love how the song begins with a somber piano intro. It is followed up with a haunting spoken word which is very reminiscent of a song by the band Kreator, particularly "Death Becomes My Light". After that, Man Must Die as a whole just fires on all cylinders bringing their grooviest guitar work. Credit to Alan McFarland who has been with the band since 2002 and newcomer Michael Alan who joined in 2018. "Bring Me The Head of the King" was actually the name of a single that they put out 2 years ago and has since found its way onto this album. Its another balls against the wall, fast and aggressive song that is sure to get just about any mosh pit going. Speaking of live performances, I have never known Man Must Die to tour here in the United States. I hope they do one day. I would love to be in the crowd shouting "We Don't Need Him! Bring Me The Head of the King!" But my most favorite song is definitely "War Is My Will" as it is just a straight up banger. I must say that Joe McGlynn's vocals have always been a great fit for this band's overall approach to the musical structure of these death metal songs. There even seems to be a very slight breakdown that sounds like something The Red Chord would've done in their early years. This song even has an ending melodic guitar hook. It's simply amazing and I can't help but continue to bathe this underrated band with as many compliments as I can. Before the epic finally we have a very soft instrumental track called "Alone In A Crowded Room" before the chaos returns once more with a vengeance The Pain Behind It All concludes with the song "Who Goes There?/I.F.F." I.F.F. is an acronym that stands for Identify Friend or Foe. Its yet another kick ass song from a kick ass band! So how would I rate this new album? I enjoy every album these guys have ever made but I will say that this is easily their second best which is still a high honor. I have no real critiques about this absolutely stellar release but to keep it fair, I'm thinking about giving this record a solid 9.5 out of 10. Be sure to show your support for Man Must Die. You can listen to their music on most streaming services including: Bandcamp, Amazon Music and Spotify.

Heads Up! Oatestober kicks off as Brian is joined by film editor and festival programmer Luke Mullen to discuss arguably Peckinpah's grittiest film: Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.
VHS EPISODE: BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA **TRIGGER WARNING** THIS FILM HAS A SCENE OF ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT WHICH IS ADDRESSED ON THE EPISODEVHS, in its heyday, was the best way to watch movies. They opened up a generation to movies previously impossible to see if they weren't circulating in movie theaters years and decades after release. You could argue our current nerd culture, where everybody has seen everything, was kickstarted by GEN X getting their hands on previously obscure movies (they definitely gave us Tarantino, anyway; a lot to answer for!) But the technology, compared to our current 8K restored and improved versions was not the best (BETA also kicked its ass). A lot of transfers of older movies to VHS were crappy. Too dark, pan-and-scanned, compressed, color resolution sometimes bordering monochromatic. But in 2022 it IS a visual aesthetic filmmakers try to recreate to give their films a grimy, unwashed and somehow dangerous feel. BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA (1974) was Sam Peckinpah at his most exhausted. Fresh off the disappointing studio theft of PAT GARETT AND BILLY THE KID, always drunk, high or hungover, he decamped to Mexico to make the one movie he would later say was the only one the studios didn't butcher. It was the movie he set out to make. Old comrade Warren Oates plays what is known to be a clear impersonation of Peckinpah himself, down to even wearing Peckinpah's own dark-as-a-black-hole sunglasses. Sounds great, right?Garcia stands as one of the grimiest, nihilistic movies of the 1970s, itself a decade filled with grimy nihilistic films borne of social unrest, disgust at our institutions and a studio system that had no idea what movies people wanted to see. One of the miracle movies of the decade. Desperate people desperately trying to escape their desperate situations. Jack had never see it before and Ken's memories of the film are so entwined with the look of the 1988 VHS version, it makes for a hopping episode. Garcia may be a film of extreme moral exhaustion and of clear-eyed cynicism of human nature but there is sweetness buried under the muck. We think? Jack and Ken discuss the making of the film, its legacy, and, most importantly, how the primitive technology of VHS might improve the effect this movie has!Sam Peckinpah is who opens every episode now on our theme song so we had to get one of his movies on here at some point. Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico...it very well may be your last! Our latest look at crime cinema has us trudging through the muck of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, director Sam Peckinpah's unforgiving neo-western from 1974. But before we descend into oblivion, we load up a Blue Plate Special where we discuss Kathryn Bigelow's appropriately titled Strange Days, parse the latest David Cronenberg release Crimes of the future, and celebrate the dearly departed character acting legend Phillip Baker Hall. Upon eventually taking the off-ramp to Hell, we consider the game changing filmography of Peckinpah, the beauty of Warren Oates, and weigh what exactly today's film in question adds to the genre complexion of New Hollywood's cynicism. The Heroes travel North to the unknown, in search of the lost tower, or a sphere. It is unclear. Giants, trees, Elves, and riddles get in the way.

Tread Perilously delivers on one more promise with The Facts of Life Reunion. The globetrotting Edna Garrett decides to spend Thanksgiving 2001 with her girls from Eastland. Of course, their lives have changed since she last minded them in the 1980s. Children, husbands, careers, and boyfriends occupy their minds. Nevertheless, they are all making an effort to travel to Blair's Peekskill inn to celebrate. But will Natalie's dueling beaus, a plumbing problem, the sudden disappearance of Jo, and their family dramas spoil the Thanksgiving spirit? Erik keeps his promise to not inflict another 7th Heaven episode on Justin, but breaks a promise to guest Paul Pakler (of Paul and Corey Cross the Streams) by forcing him to watch another TV movie. The mystery of Jo's disappearance is explained. Erik advocates for Laserdisc. John Wayne's The Conqueror becomes a discussion topic. Paul theorizes the film has an important place in post-9/11 discourse. He also points out the dynamic is off without Jo. Justin compliments the surprising attention of detail and the apparent callbacks to the original series. Mrs. Garrett gets recast as Master Splinter and the girls become another TV sitcom quartet. Paul pitches a remake of Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia with Jo as the lead and the hackey Seinfeld impression makes a surprise return.
EPISODE #197-- What is there to say about news that hasn't already been said? Actually, you know what? Don't answer that. Today we talk about the three S's: Satan, Swords, and Skulls. We're talking about Gen. Flynn's run-in with IRL witch hunters, a guy finds another guy's sword, and an oligarch trying to sell a space shuttle for a skull. This and more, I guess? In the past few months, an embarrassment of rich content for Unknown Armies has poured into the Statosphere. With two whole scenario packs vying for their attention, Frank and Tormsen cover them the only way they can: Two scenario packs enter, one scenario pack leaves. Movie Review Starts at 41:49 Master Class is in session folks as Snobby Bobby and Crude Rude Dude breakdown the 1974 Peckinpah classic BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA starring the great Warren Oates. But first, listen discussions on Zack Snyder's ARMY OF THE DEAD, SWEET TOOTH, humpback whales and so much more.
I'm honestly so hype that 1974's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is the 50th episode of The Moustachioed Podcastio. Warren Oates just knocks it out the damn park in this one, which is why he is being honored today. This movie was recommended by Brady Kimball of the Solid Six Podcast so it's obvious he's one wonderfully sick son of a bitch, and that's why he's part of the Moustachioso Familia. The Moustachioed Podcastio is the weird uncle of the wonderful PodMoth Media Network. Another week, another pod! No real hook or theme this week! But I did watch a 5 star movie and I got to talk about metal a little bit! This week's movies: Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) Concrete Cowboy (2020) El Dorado (1966) Raising Arizona (1987) Lady Vengeance (2005) Hud (1963) Lords of Chaos (2018)
Is Walt Disney cryogenically preserved and hanging out with the Pirates of the Caribbean?
The Ellroy Boys (@rubberwidow, @blauer_geist, @luso_brendan)are joined by two very, very special guests, Jack (@lotus__point)and Howling Mutant (@Howlingmutant0)to discuss Sam Peckinpah's melancholic booze-soaked desert noir Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia. Extrapolations cohere and good time is had by all.
In this episode, Alex and Lara attempt to be anti-colonialist while playing alien colonizers. We did our very best. A game about alien invaders has the potential to be devastatingly serious or ludicrously silly, and we picked the option which has the word “Earthling” in the title, in this game about celebrities saving the world. Important Discoveries- Fun Fact: Alien is a good movie.-Skeksis are creepy little bird monsters.-Tumbling block towers cannot be used over Zoom. YET.
It's road trip time listeners! We've got a deep dive into the grittiest, strangest road trip movie of the 70's. It's part violent crime story, part love triangle, part buddy comedy and maybe even part Greek Myth. Featuring a legendary lead performance from the criminally underutilized Warren Oates, this is one of Sam Peckinpah's most divisive (and best!) movies. And it's the only one that features a decapitated head in a picnic basket.
Robin Berjon and Jeffrey Zeldman have a rational conversation about EME, DRM, the MPAA, and the W3C.
