November 27, 1985. St. Augustine, Florida. While attending a neighbourhood social gathering, 12-year old Martha Jean Lambert tells her mother that she needs to take a brief trip back to their mobile home, but she never returns and is eventually reported missing. Suspicion falls on Martha's 14-year old brother, David, after he gives conflicting stories about the last time he saw his sister. 24 years later, David confesses to killing Martha and disposing of her body and police find his story to be believable enough to close the investigation. However, David soon recants his confession and since corroborating evidence cannot be found to support it, Martha continues to remain a missing person and there is still debate about what actually happened to her. In this special two-part series of “The Path Went Chilly”, Jules and I explore the unsolved disappearance of Martha Jean Lambert and in this episode, Jules will perform a statement analysis on David Lambert's confession. In both cases, the resulting film was a commercial disappointment and a critical disaster. What went wrong? Who's fault was it? Do these maligned movies deserve reappraisal? In tribute to the legendary Sam Peckinpah's 100th birthday and the recent passing of the great David Lynch, the Pink Smoke has recruited artist David Lambert and filmmaker Martin Kessler to revisit these two films. It's an overlooked subgenre despite the fact that from Red River to Lonesome Dove, some of the defining films of the Western genre are about the grueling world of cattle-men. When it comes epic Westerns about terse, determined men pushing themselves to the limit under the biggest skies imaginable, there's few subgenres as likely to deliver. Join hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs for a lively, comprehensive conversation that sets out to do justice to the suprising breadth of work found in "le cinema de cattle drive," as the French call it. And as always, there's no better guest with whom to discuss Westerns than the bottomlessly knowledgeable Mr. Lambert! This is an incredibly fun journey spanning decades of saddle adventures which make up the western equivalent of the road movie. Questions asked along the way include: Is cattle driving exclusive to men? Who would be your preferred trail boss: Monomaniacal John Wayne from Red River? Reformed gunman Billy Green Bush of The Culpepper Cattle Co.? Tough but fair Glenn Ford in Cowboy? Should anyone under any circumstance have to experience 1951's Vengeance Valley? Rise of the Dragon was a highly ambitious game that in many ways was ahead of its time on its release in 1990. As well as receiving plenty of positive reviews at the time, it also won a Special Award for Artistic Achievement from Computer Gaming World in 1991. In 1996 they also included it as 83rd best game of all time. And yet this game has become largely forgotten nowadays. Very rarely will you see this included in recommended adventure games or sci fi games so, hoping to go some way to rectifying this, Seoirse is joined by newest member of the AGP team, David Lambert, as they both discuss this game in detail including what they enjoyed about the game, what they feel could have been improved and just why they believe this game should be discussed more. Copyright Outplay

It served not only as a culmination of Clint's fabled career in cowboy movies but as an austere reflection on 100 years worth of Western cinema, and was lauded as the ultimate revisionist response to a genre that never tackled serious themes of violence and morality or presented a realistic portrait of life on the late 19th century American frontier. But was it really? The Pink Smoke welcomes back artist/historian David Lambert to expand upon the thoughts he presented in his epic Twitter thread examining the minutiae of its script, casting, authenticity, costuming, influences and actual place within the overall Western genre. Unforgiven is a great film, but do people even understand what it's trying to say? Lambert makes a strong case for reappraisal with hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The 'Neglected Approaches' Approach: AE Studio's Alignment Agenda, published by Cameron Berg on December 18, 2023 on LessWrong. Many thanks to Samuel Hammond, Cate Hall, Beren Millidge, Steve Byrnes, Lucius Bushnaq, Joar Skalse, Kyle Gracey, Gunnar Zarncke, Ross Nordby, David Lambert, Simeon Campos, Bogdan Ionut-Cirstea, Ryan Kidd, Eric Ho, and Ashwin Acharya for critical comments and suggestions on earlier drafts of this agenda, as well as Philip Gubbins, Diogo de Lucena, Rob Luke, and Mason Seale from AE Studio for their support and feedback throughout. TL;DR Our initial theory of change at AE Studio was a 'neglected approach' that involved rerouting profits from our consulting business towards the development of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology to dramatically enhance human agency, better enabling us to do things like solve alignment. Now, given shortening timelines, we're updating our theory of change to scale up our technical alignment efforts. With a solid technical foundation in BCI, neuroscience, and machine learning, we are optimistic that we'll be able to contribute meaningfully to AI safety. We are particularly keen on pursuing neglected technical alignment agendas that seem most creative, promising, and plausible. We are currently onboarding promising researchers and kickstarting our internal alignment team. As we forge ahead, we're actively soliciting expert insights from the broader alignment community and are in search of data scientists and alignment researchers who resonate with our vision of enhancing human agency and helping to solve alignment. About us Hi! We are AE Studio, a bootstrapped software and data science consulting business. Our mission has always been to reroute our profits directly into building technologies that have the promise of dramatically enhancing human agency, like Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI). We also donate 5% of our revenue directly to effective charities. Today, we are ~150 programmers, product designers, and ML engineers; we are profitable and growing. We also have a team of top neuroscientists and data scientists with significant experience in developing ML solutions for leading BCI companies, and we are now leveraging our technical experience and learnings in these domains to assemble an alignment team dedicated to exploring neglected alignment research directions that draw on our expertise in BCI, data science, and machine learning. As we are becoming more public with our AI Alignment efforts, we thought it would be helpful to share our strategy and vision for how we at AE prioritize what problems to work on and how to make the best use of our comparative advantage. Why and how we think we can help solve alignment We can probably do with alignment what we already did with BCI You might think that AE has no business getting involved in alignment - and we agree. AE's initial theory of change sought to realize a highly "neglected approach" to doing good in the world: bootstrap a profitable software consultancy, incubate our own startups on the side, sell them, and reinvest the profits in Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) in order to do things like dramatically increase human agency, mitigate BCI-related s-risks, and make humans sufficiently intelligent, wise, and capable to do things like solve alignment. While the vision of BCI-mediated cognitive enhancement to do good in the world is increasingly common today, it was viewed as highly idiosyncratic when we first set out in 2016. Initially, many said that AE had no business getting involved in the BCI space (and we also agreed at the time) - but after hiring leading experts in the field and taking increasingly ambitious A/B-tested steps in the right direction, we emerged as a respected player in the space (see here, here, here, and here for some examples). The mountains were filled with trees and creeks. The loneliness was called the Dead Hills. They were thirty miles wide. There were thousands of hills out there: yellow and barren in the summer with lots of juniper brush in the draws and a few pine trees here and there, acting as if they had wandered away like stray sheep from the mountains and out into the Dead Hills and had gotten lost and had never been able to find their way back...poor trees..." The podcast heads west for this October's horror fiction episode, where they find a couple cowboy killers recruited from a brothel to vanquish a mischievous monster in an isolated mansion out in Eastern Oregon. Richard Brautigan's rugged, experimental, very funny The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western begins as a travelogue of turn-of-the-century frontier life and makes a drastic shift to the surreal when the two gunmen (who don't put any lace on their killings) reach their sinister assignment. Artist and American Western history expert David Lambert is on hand to offer his take on whether countercultural cult poet/novelist Brautigan passes muster as a western writer, or if Hawkline Monster is a xerox copy of an audacious literary achievement. Lambert talks with hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs about the unmistakable Brautigan-ness of the novel, how the book fares when it moves into much stranger territory in its second half, and the fascinating decades-spanning background of multiple failed movie adaptations. In the summer of 1895 John Selman Sr gunned down John Wesley Hardin. Considered one of the deadliest shootists of the Old west, Hardin killed his first man at the tender age of fifteen. In the decade that followed dozens of others would fall to the young man's guns, including – if the legend is true – a victim whose only crime was snoring too loud. Yet despite all this, Hardin's killer with a badge – John Selman – was far worse. Also discussed is the Lincoln County War, Jesse Evans, George Scarborough, Bass Outlaw, and Hulk Hogan. In the spring of 1905, a couple of down-and-out cowboys robbed a dice game in Winslow, Arizona. What followed was a literal pursuit to hell, a bloody gunfight, and an Old West Lazurus rising from the grave for one final sip of whiskey. StrideSAFE LLC CEO David Lambert joins the TDN Writers' Room to talk about his technology's ability to potentially prevent breakdowns on the racetrack.
Ed Scarborough cut his teeth chasing outlaws like Black Jack Ketchum when he was still a teenager. He'd go on to become a deputy sheriff, constable, Arizona Ranger, and according to those who knew him, Ed was born to a saddle, an excellent marksman, and did not know the meaning of the word fear. Make no mistake about it, Ed Scarborough took down many a sassy bandit over the course of his career. Be that as it may, the toughest opponents he'd ever face turned out to be himself and a rabid skunk. Toss in a little bit of cross-dressing, a shootout with a bicycle, some good ole fashioned homicide and a daring prison escape, and we've got what may be the most absurd tale I've ever had the pleasure to share. Trust me; you're not going to want to skip this one. My Darling Clementine is considered the greatest Wyatt Earp film of all time. It also just so happens to be the least accurate, despite legendary director John Ford having known Wyatt personally. Contrary to popular belief – and Ford's own claims - this film was NOT based on Earp's own account of his days in Tombstone, but rather an earlier film whose director also knew the now famous lawman. I say now famous because Wyatt wasn't exactly what you would call a household name prior to the 20th century. His time in Dodge City - as well as his actions in Tombstone - certainly garnered Earp a reputation in certain circles. However, his introduction to the nation at large wouldn't be as a lawman at all, but rather as the corrupt boxing referee who threw the fight for heavyweight champion of the world; a fiasco that saw Wyatt turn to Hollywood in an effort to redeem his sullied reputation. We all know the "scene", right? Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan Earp are walking the streets of Tombstone when they're confronted by a visibly inebriated Johnny Ringo. He informs the trio that he wants their blood and their souls, and he wants them now. Wyatt refuses to fight, says there ain't no money in it and tells Ringo to sober up, as he and his brothers turn and walk away. At this point Johnny really begins to rage. “Don't any of you have the guts to play for blood?” And that's when Doc steps out; fingers dancing close to the butt of his holstered revolver with another pistol concealed behind his back. He'd been watching the events unfold from a nearby barber's chair and once Ringo blurts out his bold invitation, Holliday decides he wants to play. And you know what he says next. Or at least I should say you THINK you know. 1994's Tombstone remains an iconic movie that produced many an iconic phrase, one in particular that people have been quoting nonstop for the past 3 decades. A simple idiom now emblazoned on t shirts, hoodies, whiskey tumblers, key chains, shot glasses, bottle openers, beanies, baseball caps, hell…even fuzzy socks. In my kitchen right now is a coffee mug with this famous expression printed on it in big bold letters. But are those letters wrong? Are we wrong? Is this some sort of Mandela effect, did our ears betray us? Or are there simply some among us pretending to be smarter than they really are? What the hell did Val Kilmer aka Doc Holliday really say? And what SHOULD he have said? November 27, 1985. St. Augustine, Florida. While attending a neighbourhood social gathering, 12-year old Martha Jean Lambert tells her mother that she will be taking a brief trip back to their mobile home, but Martha never returns and is eventually reported missing. Suspicion starts to fall upon on Martha's 14-year old brother, David Lambert, after he gives conflicting stories about the last time he saw her. Over the course of the next 24 years, David makes two separate confessions about killing Martha and disposing of her body. Investigators find David's second confession to be believable enough that they decide to close the case, but almost immediately after this news is made public, David recants his story. Was Martha's brother actually responsible for her disappearance, or did something else happen to her? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers a very controversial and divisive missing persons case which has yet to find a conclusive resolution.
