On Thursday June 5, 1975, the people of Britain were asked to vote "Yes" or "No" to membership of what was then called "The Common Market." Pamphlets were sent out to everyone by the Government of Prime Minister Harold Wilson. The official Government pamphlet read: "Britain's New Deal in Europe: Her Majesty's Government have decided to recommend to the British People to vote for staying in the Community." Now, over forty years later another referendum is to be held onThursday, 23rd of June 2016, and the Government of David Cameron has sent out a pamphlet with the heading "Why the Government believes that voting to remain in the European Union is the best decision for the UK."

"The Islamic State terror group has reportedly claimed responsibility for the co-ordinated shootings and bombings across Paris" announces Britain's Express newspaper. "At least 149 people are said to have been slaughtered in the French capital" said the paper (November 14, 2015).

This is Paul Billington commenting on Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu's statement last week linking Adolf Hitler with the wartime Palestinian Arab leader, the Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini, and the Holocaust. Not surprisingly his comments drew a sharp response from President Barack Hussein Obama (to give him his full name) of the United States because Netanyahu's statement was, he said, "inflammatory rhetoric."

For over 150 years prophetic watchmen have looked for the day when Russia would rise to dominate and control all Eurasia. That is now Vladimir Putin's stated goal.

Hello, this is Paul Billington with you again this week, looking at some background facts which reflect upon a Royal Wedding such as the one seen by millions this past weekend. Behind all the pomp and glory that the people see there are constitutional arrangements in place which go back centuries, and although people today pay little attention to them - and are even embarrassed by some of the details - they are virtually impossible to ignore. Attempts to alter these arrangements, as well as the failure to do so, have been in the news this week. The constitutional changes have been blocked by the Church of England, and by the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. At the root of these arrangements there is the question of papal authority versus the authority of Scripture. Article 37 of the Church of England (1563 and 1571) stated "The Bishop of Rome hath no jurisdiction in this Realm of England," and the British monarch is duty bound by the Coronation oath to uphold the protestant religion - so there is a constitutional obstruction to a Roman Catholic occupying the British throne.

During the coming week the news media will give considerable coverage to the Royal wedding that is planed for Friday, April 29th in Westminster Abbey, London. Just over a week ago we visited the scene in London where the event is to take place, if all goes well. So this is Paul Billington bringing you this week's edition of the Bible in the News, and offering some comments on the Royal event from a Bible point of view. As multitudes watch the spectacular proceedings in Westminster Abbey, few will be thinking about the fact that it will be taking place in what is essentially a 'house of the dead.' Some 3,000 people are buried in the Abbey, including many Kings, Queens, former Prime Ministers and notables. Here lies Elizabeth I, James I, Mary Queen of Scots, Charles II as well as others like composer Handel (known for his ' Messiah') and poet Chaucer, novelist Charles Dickens and so on. It really is a House of the Dead!

The whole world, both physical and political is on the move.

This is Paul Billington bringing you another edition of the Bible in the News - but with this difference: going back to the time of King James the 1st and the publication of the 1611 version, that world looked very different to the one we see today. If we look at a historical map of that time we see Europe and the Middle East dominated by two powers - in Central Europe there was the Germanic Holy Roman Empire, and in South East Europe there was the Turkish Ottoman Empire which ruled over the Middle East and what is now known as the Arab world.
