In recent events relating to Russia’s war in the Ukraine it is not the Western European nations making the biggest noise against Russia. The nation leading the way in protest against Russias invasion is arguably Britain as we might expect from Bible Propehcy
For months now rumours have been circulating that the British government was planning to scrap parts of the EU-UK withdrawal agreement which it signed up it after the 2019 General Election. This agreement is a legally binding agreement and was seen to be the foundation of the UK-EU relationship going forward after Britain’s departure from the European Union.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin has stated his interest in expanding Russian influence into the Baltic States. The Russian Duma is looking to nullify Lithuania's independence, bringing it back under Russian hegemony.
It’s no secret that Russia has used their position as an energy supplier to Europe for political gain. Back in January 2006 Russia cut off gas to Ukraine, which led to countries further down stream, such as Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia & Serbia also loosing supplies. Other countries such as France, Germany and Austria also saw significant reductions in supply from Russia. Russia again cut gas supplies in 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015 after which Ukraine found new gas supplies from European Union Countries. More recently Russia has cut off gas supplies to Finland, Poland and Bulgaria during the on-going war in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, 11th May, the IDF entered Jenin, a town in the north of the so-called West Bank in an operation to capture wanted terrorists inside. As they entered the town, they encountered heavy gunfire from Palestinian militants inside the town.
As Russia continues its aggression in the Ukraine it turns off the gas to parts of Europe. Europe responds seeking to ban Russian oil completely with plans underway to also ban Russian gas by the end of the decade. As all this unfolds, Israel eyes up the opportunities. In this weeks Bible in the News we consider these latest developments in the light of Bible prophecy.
One of the greatest outcomes of the war in Ukraine has been an impetus for a massive wave of immigration to Israel. This is presented by David Billington, in this special presentation on prophecy fulfilling delivered on April 13. For Bible in the News this week the presentation can be watched below.
Ukraine is in the news every day due to the ongoing war that shows no sign of ending any time soon. In this war, as with many wars refugees flee the conflict sometimes creating enormous upheavals in populations. When war broke out in Ukraine Israel was already preparing for what would inevitably occur, aliyah, a wave of Jewish immigration. And it did.
The repercussions of Russia’s invasion into Ukraine are being felt around the globe. Israel is no exception. Ukrainian Jews, among those fleeing the conflict, are getting in line to immigrate to Israel. In Israel there is growing concern about the nation’s future relationship with Russia. It now has permanent military bases in Syria to the north and Russia is a key player in the nuclear negotiations with Iran. Meanwhile, Israel is making peace with its Arab neighbours and is positioned to benefit greatly from tightening global natural gas supply and its ability to offer alternative energy security to countries concerned about Russia. On April 1st, Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced the completion of negotiations and the signing of a “milestone” free-trade agreement.
The kingdom of men is depicted in Daniel by the image of chapter 2. We live in the time of the feet and toes which are made of iron, the remnants of the Roman Empire, and clay described as “the seed of men.” Russia has begun the process of bringing the broken pieces of the Roman Empire into its clay grasp. Before Russia fulfills the prophetic word by invading the Middle East it must bring Europe under its control. This process has begun. This week in the Bible in the News we are sharing a special talk given in Brantford where we explore the Bible prophecies regarding Russia’s grand move to establish its image empire.
The West have shown themselves unable to do anything to prevent Russia from invading Ukraine. Instead they can do nothing but stand by and watch, asking why Putin is doing this, words they will echo when they ask "Art thou come to take a spoil"
Vladimir Putin has begun the task long foretold in history of building up the image empire for the latter day battle of Armageddon. The world is in disbelief of Russia's actions as it moves to conquer Ukraine. As Bible believers we should not only expect it - but anticipate it will continue to eventually include all of Europe.
Events are taking place in Europe that the Bible spoke of, and therefore many Bible students have expected and looked for over hundreds, and even thousands of years. Even on this program we have spoke often of the time when Russia would begin to build up its empire. Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News, this is John Billington with you
The prophecy of Zechariah 6 is a prophecy concerning future events. The man who is the Branch is seen as both king and priest in his kingdom, with the holy temple being rebuilt. Most interestingly the chapter opens with two “mountain” powers seemingly to the north and south of Jerusalem in the context of the chapter. We are not left to wonder at these northern and southern powers as this prophecy fits hand in glove with the latter-day King of the North and King of the South in Daniel 11:40-45 and the northern and southern alliances in Ezekiel 38. This is John Billington with you this week.
Thursday of this week was Holocaust Remembrance Day – commemorated on the day that the Auschwitz Concentration camp was liberated by the Red Army in 1945. The day remembers the killing of six million Jews, two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population.
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to move toward a climax. The Times of Israel and other media around the world citing reports that families of US embassy workers in Ukraine have been told to start evacuating soon. Will Russia invade Ukraine or are they simply playing a game of brinkmanship with the west to gain traction in negotiations? Today on the UK Telegraph:
An opinion piece grabbed my attention this week on the Israel HaYom news site. The piece was entitled, “The UN's final solution to the Israel question. The international body's campaign of demonization and delegitimization escalates.”It’s as if the prophet Joel was writing the headlines! If the prophet Joel did, it could read something like:
On the southern border of Russia lies the massive country of Kazakhstan, a former Soviet Republic. The country, which is mainly Muslim with a Russian minority, has been rocked by protests said to be a result of rising fuel costs. The Kazakhstan government asked Russia for help. The “peace keeping” force being sent by Russia into its neighbour, was described as a "no ordinary peace-keeping force” by The Telegraph Defence Editor Con Coughlin. He comments, "While the Kremlin remains coy about disclosing precisely how many troops have been dispatched to Kazakhstan, the defence ministry has confirmed that an airlift involving 70 aircraft has been launched to deploy forces “around the clock””. Is this a genuine “peace keeping” mission, or something else? Con continues,
Well, it is that time of the year when — one way or another, the Bible is in the News. Many of us have been listening to Handel's oratorio — the Messiah. Some of us will be more familiar with it than others, though most will have heard the well known Hallelujah chorus.
This past week Canada has made preaching repentance illegal with the adoption of Bill C-4 which bans “conversion therapy.” This is a defining moment in the war against the Bible. The use of ‘social terrorism’ silenced any dissent in the Canadian House of Commons. Not one politician spoke against it. This law puts Christians at odds with the Canadian government, where they must now make a choice to obey God or men.
We live in a very unstable world. Unstable economies, supply lines and trade. Political unrest and movements toward more authoritarian governments. Nations on the verge of war. Instability is everywhere. These times can be depressing, but Psalm 18:2 gives us confidence, "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” While everything is shaking and uncertain, we have a rock on which to be grounded, our God and his truth. 2 Peter 1:19 says, "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts."
The return to the promised land has had a massive impact on the Jewish people. Reconnecting to their ancient land and language has helped to develop a Bible centred culture. It often seems that wherever one digs into the soil of the holy land, it becomes an archaeological site! One example of this phenomena, of the land of Israel bringing us to the Bible, appeared on the Israel HaYom news site recently, with the headline, "Secrets of the Cave of the Patriarchs exposed.” The introduction to the article, by Nadav Shragai reads, "Noam Arnon's comprehensive doctoral dissertation on the Cave of the Patriarchs proves there is much more to the ancient site than meets the eye.”
During the last two weeks the UK has seen the world’s elite leaders fly in and out of Scotland. They have been congregating in Glasgow as the UK has been hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). Royalty, presidents, former presidents, prime ministers, ministers, senators and the great and the good from industry and business have all descended on Scotland to give their opinion and ensure their agenda is met in tackling climate change.
This past week the elections in the US, and concerns raised north of the boarder on what books are being removed from public school libraries, has shined the light on a progressive agenda to indoctrinate our children with radical views on race and identity. When we look at what is behind these issues we find an agenda in conflict with the truth of God's word. The real issue is human nature. God will resolve these issues with the return of His son, who will bring justice and will rule with fairness. Until then, as followers of Christ, we should be ensuring our children are not being taught radical ideas opposed to Biblical values.
Halloween is a celebration of death and the Western world are gearing up for it. Pumpkins are being carved, the shops are full of scary masks and fake blood, children are planning their trick or treat costumes and households are buying in to give to “trick or treaters”. In all this commotion we stop to consider what the Bible might have to say about the ideas behind the celebration of Halloween.
Europe is being held hostage by Russia with the unfolding energy crisis that is gripping the world. The Bible clearly indicates that Europe will be under Russia's control, and by weaponizing the gas supply, Russia appears to be achieving its objectives.
With the Withdrawal Agreement, still less than two years old, relations between the newly independent Britain and the EU are already showing signs of strain. As Bible believers, we expect from prophecy that the UK and EU will not have close relations at the time of the end.
On September 22, the UK Telegraph had the headline: "Putin’s iron grip on energy leaves Europe increasingly vulnerable”. The article began by noting that, "Vladimir Putin has his finger hovering over Europe’s light switch.” The article then goes on the explain that typically over the summer the Russian company Gazprom pumps a lot of gas into Europe’s storage facilities ready for winter. This has not happened this year. Russia is putting pressure on Europe to approve the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which the Telegraph states is, "finally ready to pump gas into Europe but is awaiting approval from German regulators.” The Telegraph notes that in regards to the pipeline Germany has been caught between Moscow and Washington. While the pipeline would facilitate bringing more gas into Europe in the future, it would not fill this years shortage and would ultimately make Europe even more reliant on Russian energy — which is why it has been opposed by Washington. Energy prices are soaring, which is threatening any pandemic recovery. If Europe has a cold winter there are difficult times ahead. The article concludes: "Winter is coming and a cold chill is set to descend on households and governments across Europe.”
Taking the world by surprise Australia, Britain, and the United States have announced a new trilateral security partnership of historic like minded nations. Although it was not mentioned in the announcement this move counters the unpredictable nature of China and Russia. The first task of this new partnership is to arm Australia with nuclear powered submarines making them only the seventh country in the world that will have such technology. The pact is sending a clear message to the world that the United States’ closest and natural allies, even under President Biden, are the Anglo Saxon nations. The Atlantic Magazine article headline was “Joe Biden’s New World Order”. Nigel Farage called it “every Brexiteer’s dream”. For students of Bible Prophecy it is simply another confirmation that events are moving toward the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Today, the 11th day of the 9th month, is the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shocked the world. As a result, news outlets across the globe are running stories marking the anniversary, remembering the victims, reflecting on the changes of the last 20 years, many commenting on the lack of progress. As political leaders pay tribute to those who died, everyone who remembers thinks back to where they were on that day.
Eze 38:11 'And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates'. The Abraham Accords brought a seismic geopolitical shift in the region that could be seen as a building block for an acceptance of Israel in the Middle East. Here are some reflections one year on...
The tragedy in Afghanistan is horrific, but a greater geopolitical move is going on behind the scenes. This week we continue our review of the US withdraw from Afghanistan, but also the entire region, and Russia's resurgence in the same area, setting the stage for the latter day invasion of the Middle East.
On July 12 it was reported that an artifact from the time of the judges had been discovered, with a fairly clear inscription of the name Jerubbaal! On July 14 it was announced that a segment of Jerusalem’s First Temple city wall had been uncovered!
The ugly past of Canada's residential schools have been in the headlines. What is not always recognized is the record of the Catholic Church in particular, with abuse and forced conversions. John Billington addresses these issues and explains their significance in light of Bible truth.
This week was an awkward one for the Catholic Church. In a show of power, the US Conference of Bishops voted overwhelmingly to deny communion to the nation’s second Catholic president, Joe Biden, due to his support of abortion, and in another embarrassment, mass graves were discovered in Canada at residential schools that were run by the Church. These events are part of a bigger picture showing the unprecedented influence of the Roman Church over the world's most powerful nations.
In 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, the Apostle Paul warns the believers that there would be a falling away from the Gospel Truth, which they had been taught and had believed. In fact, he specifically says that this iniquity was already at work. This falling away or apostasy was restrained, but Paul says it would be revealed and would eventually be destroyed at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. This Christian apostasy was restrained by Paganism, the current religion of the Roman Empire at the time of the Apostle. When Paganism was removed out of the way by the armies of Constantine, a changed Christianity was the new religion of the Empire. The figure head of this falling away is called "that man of sin" who exalted himself above everything, “…so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
This week saw a coalition of unlikely partners join together to overthrow Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel was just at the center of world news with the Gaza war, now it returns to the forefront withe a political earthquake, which if the alliance holds with bring into power a completely diverse group, unlikely to be able to hold together.
Tragically the worst violence in years has broken out in Israel between the Palestinians and the Israelis with Jerusalem being a focal point in the conflict. In today’s episode we look at this recent conflict in the light of Bible prophecy. Welcome to another Bible in the News.
