Hello to you listening in London, England!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more for courage) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. It's true what they say: "A story grows in the gaps where the facts fall short." 47 and his cabal are exploiting the gaps to create cruel and obscene stories because they have no facts.Headlines that repeat 47's cruel and obscene stories like reign of terror, being on the eve of destruction, days of the dictator, subservience to the sociopath, and so on reinforce these stories. The more these stories are told without the counterbalance of truth, facts, good news, and how We the People are fighting back, the more these lies will take hold in our exhausted minds because these stories keep on gushing like torrents of water out of a broken fire hydrant.Hear me when I say this: I am no idiot. Treacherous times are alive and afoot. 47 and his criminally complicit cabinet, feckless GOP congress, and subservient SCOTUS on speed dial are after nothing short of the utter desecration of our country. So, We the People must continue to push back, show up, stand up, speak up, fight and ever fight! In the darkest days of World War II when all looked lost in the face of Nazi Germany's advance across Europe and the Dunkirk evacuation, Winston Churchill summoned the will of the British people against those odds. His famous "We shall fight on the beaches" speech was a galvanizing address delivered to the House of Commons on June 4, 1940.Listen to a portion of history: “The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.”Imagine the immense sacrifice and effort required of the British people to face the adversity and pummeling hardships of war. And yet, they did with courage and determination, with unwavering resolve to resist the Nazi threat, even to the last person, if necessary. If the British defeated the Nazis - against all odds - who are we not to follow in their footsteps and prevail against the enemy within our shores? We have no Churchill to summon us to battle; but we shall fight and we shall win because We the People are defying them and their obscenely hateful stories.Thank you for listening and making good trouble to liberate the land of the free and the home of the brave. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Pets aren't just animals, they're family. Did you know that India's pet industry doubled to $3.6 billion in just five years? Or that British households now own 38 million pets, half as many as the human population? Welcome to Adept English, where we help you learn https://adeptenglish.com/company/learning-system/ English through fascinating real-world stories like this one."In a world where you can be anything, be kind—especially to animals." Ellen DeGeneresNow, full disclosure—I've always been a cat-and-dog person (despite my cat Ivan's grumpy interruptions!). But today's episode isn't just about pets; it's about what they reveal, why societies dote on "fur babies," how laws now treat pets like sentient beings, and even… pet prenups? (Yes, that's a thing!)By the end, you'll master key vocabulary (grooming, custody, stray dogs) and cultural insights—from Turkey's stray dog crisis to Spain's groundbreaking animal welfare laws. So if you're ready to practise English while uncovering the surprising world of pet ownership, let's begin. Mike welcomes back “Superdummy” Paul McGuigan for two podcasts; this week is all about getting married in Vegas and the fear (or lack of) in new places, even when people speak the same language! In more detail, Mike & Paul first discuss Paul's hiatus from podcasting and the huge amount of podcasts he listens to, as well as a book he's currently reading and Mike's recent reading habits. They then talk about why they both decided to get married in Vegas with their respective wives and how those trips went and the surprising logistical ease of getting married in a totally different country. Paul also talks about his previous experiences in America, including New York, and the duo discuss feeling safe/unsafe in unfamiliar places, even in Britain! This is only half of their conversation; the other half, about an entirely different topic, will be out next week as it's own episode and will feature Irish ancestry and the strangest book you've never heard of! If you want to hear this a week early, consider supporting Mike at www.patreon.com/GenuineChitChat for weekly bonus content and early access! In this episode of English and Beyond, an intermediate-advanced English learning podcast, César and I explore the labyrinth that is British social etiquette. From a brutally honest, brutally Spanish flat inspection in Valencia to the fine-tuned overuse of “sorry” and “thank you” on the London Tube, we break down what it means to be “polite” in the UK.Is it all genuine kindness, or are Brits just world-class at passive-aggressive fakery? And how does that reconcile with the less-than-dignified behaviour of sunburnt Brits in Magaluf?Join us both as we tackle queuing etiquette, white lies, and the cultural clash of ordering a simple beer in a British pub. Packed with sharp observations, dry humour, and César's own Spanish-British perspective, this episode is a deep dive into why British politeness is both maddening and magnificent.Don't worry - listening won't require queuing. Unless you're living in Britain, in which case, feel free to line up out of habit. For a full and accurate transcript and additional learning resources, check out our website at the following link: morethanalanguage.com
