A Chinese envoy has called on all parties in the Middle East conflict to work toward an early return to regional stability and peace.

This is Michael Shermer, remember. Then we take in some lowlights of his unbelievably vapid conversation with store-brand Bari Weiss, Bari Weiss's wife, Nellie Bowles, who is just... insufferable. We conclude by voyaging fully into the sickness as we tune into a discussion Shermer had with rabidly Islamophobic Zionist neocon warmonger and racist reactionary crank Douglas Murray, all about how Islam is a 'culture of death' and maybe Israel accidentally did some bad stuff in Gaza but, y'know, that's war, or something. Big content warnings on this one. It's what I call a 'journey episode'. Not only is it over 2hrs long (we try to keep the length down but sometimes it's not possible) but all the way through it also raises topics that are very hard to deal with, including sexual and psychological abuse, and the manifold violent crimes of the state of Israel, including the Gaza genocide. On this special podcast episode we are sharing the opening statements from the Munk Debate on the Two-State Solution which took place on December 3rd in front of an audience of 3,000 people at Toronto’s Meridian Hall. The debate resolution was Be it resolved, it is in Israel’s interest to support a two-state solution Arguing in favour of the resolution was former Israeli prime minister, finance minister, and mayor of Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert. His debate partner was Tzipi Livni, who served as Israel's justice and foreign minister and the country's chief peace negotiator in 2008 and 2014. Arguing against the resolution was the celebrated historian, former Israeli ambassador to the United States and deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Michael Oren. His debate partner was Ayelet Shaked, who most recently served as Israel's justice minister and minister of the interior. As with all our live Munk Debates, the audience voted on this resolution prior to hearing the debate. Initially, 67% of attendees voted in favour of the debate motion, and 33% voted against. We did another poll after the debate to find out how many people had changed their minds once they listened to arguments from both sides. During his 60 Minutes interview on Sunday night, when asked about a so-called two-state solution, President Trump did not indicate whether or not he supports such a move. On this week's Israel Uncensored, Josh Hasten said it was positive the president doesn't endorse such a plan, but ideally, he would come out against it. Josh has argued many times that the establishment of another state between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea would be an existential threat to the state of Israel.

There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell The New Yorker Radio Hour's David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. For decades, the United States backed efforts to achieve a two-state solution—in which Israel would exist side by side with the Palestinian state, with both states recognizing each other's claim to contested territory. The veteran negotiators Hussein Agha, representing Palestine, and Robert Malley, an American diplomat, played instrumental roles in that long effort, including the critical Camp David summit of 2000. But, in their new book, “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” they conclude that they were part of a charade. There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. You can't be emotional. You have to be rational. You have to be cool.
