For decades, the United States backed efforts to achieve a two-state solution—in which Israel would exist side by side with the Palestinian state, with both states recognizing each other's claim to contested territory. The veteran negotiators Hussein Agha, representing Palestine, and Robert Malley, an American diplomat, played instrumental roles in that long effort, including the critical Camp David summit of 2000. But, in their new book, “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” they conclude that they were part of a charade. There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. You can't be emotional. You have to be rational. You have to be cool. Tonight on The Brian Crombie Hour, Brian interviews Jon Allen, a former Canadian ambassador to Israel 2006 to 2010. He discusses the two-state solution as the only viable option for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Jon expresses hope that with proper leadership and compromise on long-standing issues, a two-state solution could still be achieved. He shares historical examples of seemingly intractable conflicts that were eventually resolved, including the Yom Kippur War, the Irish Troubles, and the end of apartheid in South Africa. He expresses optimism that peace between Israelis and Palestinians is possible, citing the example of post-World War II Europe as a precedent for reconciliation. Jon believed that eventually, the mothers of both Israelis and Palestinians would demand an end to the violence for the sake of their children's future.Jon provides a detailed analysis of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's political strategy and current situation. He describes Netanyahu as an effective but divisive leader who has never supported a two-state solution, and who is now prolonging the Gaza war for political reasons as he faces criminal charges and a commission of inquiry. Jon notes that Netanyahu's recent actions, including firing security officials and promoting conspiracy theories about a "deep state" opposing him, have damaged Israel's international standing.

Send us a textHadar Susskind, president and CEO of New Jewish Narrative, talks about Israel's decision to advance a controversial, long-planned and long-delayed settlement regarded as a death knell for an independent Palestinian state. The E1 settlement would add 3,400 new settlement units east of Jerusalem and split the Occupied West Bank in two.  Susskind was previously head of Americans for Peace Now,  a peace group that tracked the growth of Jewish settlements in the Occupied West Bank. That organization recently merged with Ameinu, another progressive, venerable Jewish group, to establish New Jewish Narrative.  It continues Americans for Peace Now's activities. Susskind describes the vision of full equality of Jews and Palestinians in Israel that the new organization is based on and holds out hope that forces both outside and within Israel may yet stop the E1 settlement and the Israeli government's annexation of the West Bank.

Israel vehemently denied the reports as “lies” and “modern blood libel,” and the United States appeared to dismiss the declaration as part of a “false narrative of deliberate mass starvation” from Hamas. We learn about the United Nations Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system, which issued the report, saying that an estimated 514,000 people — or nearly a quarter of the enclave’s population — are experiencing famine.
