Author and journalist Joe Conason has a new book out called The Longest Con: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Frauds Hijacked American Conservatism, which tells the harrowing story of how 70 years of scams and propaganda has dragged us so dangerously close to authoritarian fascism. It's such an important volume for many reasons, especially because it provided context in a time when people tend to forget the past. No shows next week. Thanks to everyone for your support! Carol Burnett's big day. Bob's prank call to Larry King. Our preview of tonight's presidential debate. Fact checking Trump after the debate is pointless. Republicans continue their lies about Biden and cocaine. People over 70 and stimulants. More evidence Trump will skyrocket inflation. The ouroboros of bullshit. Republicans want to end no-fault divorce, and why that's bad for women. [Explicit Language] Author/director Greg Mitchell returns for his third appearance on the show. Greg wrote and directed the brand new documentary The First Attack Ads: Hollywood vs Upton Sinclair, telling the story of the 1934 governor's race in California and how wealthy Hollywood executives used film for the first time to smear Sinclair with familiar mud-slinging tactics still in use today. This episode of the podcast is a look into the Tulsa Race Massacre and Juneteenth. I took a few weeks away from the podcast so I could read, learn, and come back to the podcast with a better knowledge of events that impacted the Black communities in the US and the world. A few weeks before this episode aired, Trump caused a furor over his decision to hold a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 19. At the time, I didn't understand why there was an outcry (other than holding a rally during the global pandemic), but I soon learned about the Tulsa Race Massacre and Juneteenth - dates and events that I'd never learned in school. I started this podcast to learn about and share events, people, and places that may have been footnotes in our history books and history classes. Or in this case, left out entirely. This episode dives into the events of the Tulsa Race Massacre, and why June 19th is such an important date. With Chris away on adventures both amorous and aeronautical, Rob and Thom navigate the maturity curve of world religions, the fractal nature of social groupings, the telltale portents of Christian pop songs, and, perhaps most importantly, whether a remake of Red Dawn is workable in 2012. Plus, unexpected visitors, backward backbeats, and what Thom really does while everyone else is talking. Music by Uncle Green, Big Fish Ensemble, and Paul Melancon.
Chris is back, Bill Holmes is in the 4th chair, and... ya' know folks, there are times when so much comedy and conversation gets packed into this show that it can't be detailed in a single paragraph description without collapsing on itself and becoming a gravitational singularity which would threaten the safety of all lifekind. This is one of those times. So do the universe a favor and just make with the listening, huh? Music by Paul Melancon, Jensen Bell, and Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin' Team.
