In this episode, I speak with a woman whose podcast has deeply inspired me and whose writings have made significant waves in anti-racism movements. I had the opportunity to fangirl a little with Layla F. Saad as we discussed her journey to becoming an anti-racist changemaker and activist.Layla is known for addressing issues of racism and social justice, but this is her first time speaking publicly about her beliefs and identity as a Muslim woman. The ongoing genocides in Gaza, Sudan, and Congo have profoundly strengthened Layla's connection to the Divine through the concept of justice grounded within the Islamic tradition. Our conversation also covers a range of other topics, including how Layla's recent diagnosis as neurodivergent has changed how she interacts with the world and enabled her to understand herself better. Layla also shares her perspective on the importance of experiencing collective trauma, grief, and rage as part of our shared humanity.Layla Saad is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author, speaker, teacher, and cultural worker. She is the author of the groundbreaking anti-racism book Me and White Supremacy and the host of the Become A Good Ancestor and Good Ancestor Podcasts. Find Layla online here: https://www.instagram.com/laylafsaad/  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/becomeagoodancestor Support the Show.Find out more about Rose's work here: https://lnk.bio/dr.rose.aslanWebsite: https://compassionflow.comSupport Rahma with Rose so I can keep producing more episodes here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2197727/supporters/new Music credits: Vocals: Zeynep Dilara Aslan; Ney/drum: Elif Önal; Tanbur: Katherine Hreib; Rebap: Hatice Gülbahar Hepsev

Because I'm very much a faith-led person and leader. And that's how I show up. So I recognise, for me, my beliefs are that it's important for us to show up for the work. And it's also equally important for us not to think that only we know everything of what it's going to look like. "The idea that we are “over race” is precisely how racism is sustained." —Katy Sian, University of York Trigger warning for racism and discussions on white supremacy. Another week, another episode of Space To Learn! This week Lucy's discussing racism in the UK and why the internal work to dismantle subconscious beliefs and biases due to our white supremacist society is so important. It's a year on since the death of George Floyd- how much has changed thanks to the Black Lives Matter Movement? Lucy addresses why racism is an issue white people must engage with and shares some incredibly insightful resources she's found helpful in the process of educating herself on race and unpacking internal white supremacy. If you haven't previously engaged with content on race then please go and listen to the voices of People of Colour first - the aim is not to make this discussion white centred but to point out ways we can be more actively anti-racist and to think more deeply about our impact. Let me preface by stating, for the record, that I fully realize how ridiculous this question is. :-p  I adopted a senior cat not too long ago, and after many years of thinking I was a dog person I’ve realized that, in my heart of hearts, I am absolutely a cat person.  I love that they have moods, and can be a total sweetheart one moment and a complete butthead the next. Anyway, on your recommendation I recently read Sabriel. I really enjoyed it, and hands down my favorite character was Mogget (because of course it was).  Can you recommend any other books in which a cat is one of the main characters? Especially if a) they are a talking cat and b) they are kind of snarky or a smart aleck/jerk?  Mimi Lee Gets a Clue is already on my TBR list, but any other recs in any genre are welcome. Thank you! -Diane 2. Hi guys, I’m currently in the process of curating my book list for summer. I just finished We Were Liars and am honestly devastated. I was entranced the whole way through. The setting, dialogue and characters were vivid. The writing had an air of poetry that I loved. The plot was wildly intriguing, slowly unfolding piece by piece. I am wanting something else like it. Other books I’ve read that I’ve enjoyed are The Mothers, Ask Again, Yes and Little Fires Everywhere. Please help me find something like this! Thanks! -Emily 3. I am going to Michigan for vacation in July with my two best friends. I would love a book set there. We will be going to Mackinac Island and Frankenmuth in particular. If you know of any fiction or non fiction set in those areas or around. I am aware of the movie / novel Somewhere in Time as that is a large reason I am going there -Lauren 4. Hi! I’m looking for a book series for a 7 year old who’s really digging the Princess in Black and the Princess Pulverizer books (she’s been toting them around like pirate booty). I’m pretty sure you guys have answered a similar question in the past and I dug through about 20 past episodes, but can’t seem to find it! Any help would be much appreciated!! -Kristi 5. My toddler is currently obsessed with dogs.  She seeks them out on our walks, wants to help do ALL of the doggy chores for our pups at home, etc.  I am looking for books featuring dogs to get for her.  We have read most of the Good Dog Carl books, Pig the Pug, Skippy Jon Jones, and also a board book called Doggies.  Do you have any other dog books that you think a 13 month old would enjoy?   -Marelis 6. I have a friend who grew up loving vampire books but doesn’t read them any more because the relationships are always *problematic*. Any recs for more recent vampire books that avoid or undermine the bad tropes, specifically creepy age differences, iffy coercion and consent issues and lots of gaslighting and manipulation? She really liked how those issues were handled in the Daevabad series and she also loves the Greta Helsing books, Good Omens, and anything Witchy. Steampunk vibes, queer characters and F/F romance is always a plus.  -Margot 7. Hi! I’ve been looking for books specifically on internalized misogyny and internalized racism to help my family understand how they’ve absorbed harmful ideals and aren’t immune to perpetrating white supremacy, anti-blackness, and sexism. We’re a hispanic family, but I can tell some of my family members don’t quite understand how entrenched they are in white supremacist beliefs. I haven’t seen anything just yet on this particular topic in books about race so if anyone has any suggestions I’d be super grateful! -Ashley Books Discussed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comics by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack The Song of the Lioness Quartet (Alanna: The First Adventure #1) by Tamora Pierce If We Were Villains by ML Rio (tw: domestic violence) The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma (tw: death by suicide, lots of body-shaming) Snowed In by Rachel Hawthorne Once Upon A River by Bonnie Jo Campbell (tw: violence against women and children including rape, graphic violence, drug abuse) Mia Mayhem series (#1 Mia Mayhem is a Superhero) by Kara West and Leeza Hernandez Chronicles of Claudette (Giants, Beware! #1) by Jorge Aguirre and Rafael Rosado et al Stormy by Guojing Zorro and Mister Bud (Say Hello to Zorro!) by Carter Goodrich Better Off Red by Rebekah Weatherspoon Iron & Velvet by Alexis Hall For the Love of Men by Liz Plank Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. That's our topic of discussion this week. If you're looking for an active way to start loving your neighbor, turn inward and follow Amanda and Christina's joint recommendation this week--read and journal your way through "Me and White Supremacy" by Layla F. Today's episode features Kelly Dent of World Animal Protection talking about ending the global wildlife trade. The global trade in wildlife is worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually and includes both the legal and illegal trade in animals. While the Convention on International Trade in Endangered species of Wild Fauna and Flora boasts a membership of 183 countries, many argue it is insufficient, unsustainable and ineffective to protect vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species. The system is full of loopholes which allow trade in wildlife to continue unchecked, with very little ability to differentiate between legal and illegal trade. Calls to end the global wildlife trade have been growing through this pandemic, not only due to the likelihood that COVID-19 is a zoonotic pathogen, meaning it comes from animals, but also due to the sheer cost of the pandemic to human life and economy. As the population grows, pressure on wildlife and wild places also grows, meaning more interaction between both and more likelihood of animal / human conflict and disease transmission. I invited Kelly Dent to chat about why we need a blanket ban on the trade in wildlife. Kelly is the Director of External Engagement with World Animal Protection and a lifelong activist and has 25 years experience lobbying and campaigning on climate change, poverty, corporate accountability, trade, labour and human rights around the world. Kelly is reading 'Such a Fun Age' by Kiley Reid; 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy; 'Why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows' by Melanie Joy; 'Me and White Supremacy' by Layla F Saad. And welcome to “JK, It's Magic,” a bi-weekly podcast in which two bookish besties discuss (mostly) YA fantasy through the lens of intersectional feminist criticism. Why? Because critique is our fangirl love language. And because talking about books is pretty magical. I'm Jesse. kelly [00:00:29] And I'm Kelly. And in this episode, we are discussing A Dream So Dark by L.L. McKinney, the second book in the Nightmareverse series. And I didn't write a plot synopsis before recording. So fuck it, we'll do it live. [laughs] The novel picks up right after the battle that ended the first book. Alice is grounded and people are in trouble. And lots of villains come out of the woodwork and Alice has to go into Wonderland. But she also accidentally goes to Japan. And then there's large battles and that's what happens. [laughs] jessie [00:01:09] Chaos ensues. There's chaos. Lots and lots of chaos. transition [00:01:13] [bright, whimsical music plays] jessie [00:01:18] All right. Initial reactions, I think, as you all know at this point. I love L.L. McKinney. I follow her on Twitter and I just love everything about her. She's great. So you have to know that I love this book, too. It was fast paced and super fun. I loved getting some additional POVs this time around. So I stan, I guess. Like, yeah, I really enjoyed it. kelly [00:01:41] No choice but to stan. jessie [00:01:43] Yeah. [chuckles].

For many of us who are used to going to an office to work, working from home can feel like a huge shift is happening in our work habits. Suddenly, the structures you know and love don't exist anymore, and there's really nothing stopping you from lying in bed that extra hour or so. In this episode, we explore how we've been adapting to working from home and how we cope with making sure our workspace doesn't bleed into our home sanctuary. We discuss how we need to take care of our mental health as well, which, for us, hinges on a lot of how we consume social media. With the Black Lives Matter movement gaining momentum in the past two weeks, we discuss how we have been absorbing information while trying not to overload ourselves. Most importantly, however, we must remember to take care of ourselves, so that we can take care of others. Our episode concludes with an overview of our commitment to anti-racism. Last week I spoke about how to show up and how to share more of your personality online, but sharing more also means being more open about sharing your thoughts and your opinions.  Now, in the past this is something I have definitely shied away from publicly. I focused on sharing my business and I didn't know how, or feel comfortable, to bring my politics, opinions or world events into that. I understand you might feel uncomfortable talking about these subjects too. So I asked Alice Gabb along to speak about her experience in starting her business, aligning her business with her values and how she shows up unafraid to have difficult conversations.  Alice is a calligrapher, artist and activist and I wanted to know how she ties this all together and as she says, gets comfortable with having those uncomfortable conversations that are so needed.  Alice has a beautiful, successful luxury brand and has always been unafraid to explicitly share her views.  It's a bit of a big one this week, but these conversations are something I am working to get more comfortable with myself and I welcome you to join me.  You can see more of Alice's beautiful work at www.alicegabb.com and follow her over on Instagram @alicegabb If you'd like to learn more here is what I've been reading and watching this week that you can go and check out: Alice talking about anti-racism on IGTV Follow Nova Reid on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/novareidofficial/) Follow Rachel Cargle on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/rachel.cargle/) Follow @trudilebron (join her Facebook group “Business Remixed) Read Nova Reid's Anti-Racism guide (https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5edac0c82eacb0002608f093) Read Me and White Supremacy by Layla F Saad (https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/) Watch Black AF on Netflix    Come follow along @maddy.shine, subscribe to the podcast on your app of choice and find more visibility resources at business-shine.co.uk.  See you next week!

This past couple of weeks following the murder of George Floyd, a black man, by a white police officer images, flooded the airwaves and mobilized the citizenship within us, and to come together for true equality and justice. I am encouraged by what feels like a deep recognition of what is rotten at the core in our social structures built on white supremacy. It feels like we, collectively, hear the call from our united hearts to examine what we've learned to think or believe, why we're uncomfortable talking about racism -- to break down those systemic structures and make desperately needed reparations. -- Some of the books we've been reading are: So You want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo,  Me, and White Supremacy. by Layla F. Saad and How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. Each is a very unique voice, powerfully offering education and inviting us to look closely at our own mind, heart, beliefs, actions, and inactions. Oh, and I just listened to this yummy conversation Brené Brown had with Professor Ibram X. Kendi (How to be an Antiracist) on her podcast Unlocking Us -- Inspiring. A big thank you to Amy Smith who sent this amazing, in-depth list of education sources and social justice resources to support and get involved in. Check them out: http://bit.ly/ANTIRACISMRESOURCES.
