Tyler Anbinder focuses on the establishment of Castle Garden in 1855 as a centralized reception center to protect immigrants from swindlers. Hubert Glenn, an Irish-speaking clerk, managed record-keeping there for nearly 40 years, though most of these records were tragically destroyed in an 1897 fire. Anbinder also explores the political landscape, specifically the rise of the Know-Nothing Party. This nativist movement sought to disenfranchise Irish Catholics by extending naturalization requirements to 21 years. Although the party gained significant power in the mid-1850s, its influence faded as the national debate shifted toward the issue of slavery. (6)1870 CASTLE GARDEN

Today, we're joined by Lance Cayko—serial entrepreneur, award-winning architect, and co-founder of F9 Productions. He's here to share a client horror story that starts as a straightforward business deal and unravels into something far more sinister. Years ago, Lance met a couple who had relocated from the south to Colorado. The wife, an interior designer, came with beautifully crafted drawings of their dream home. Impressed by her talent, Lance actually encouraged them to skip his architectural services altogether and simply hire an engineer—a gesture of genuine respect for her work. That could have been the end of it. But years later, the husband resurfaced with a new project—and a new fiancée. The work began smoothly enough, but two-thirds of the way through, the invoices started going unpaid, communication went cold, and strange emails began trickling in. The reason soon became clear: the client had started construction himself without waiting for the building permit. Lance had seen enough. He sent a final email rescinding all involvement and walked away. Then the fiancée called. She was devastated—and completely in the dark. Over coffee, she revealed that her partner had drained her accounts entirely. She pressed charges, and he fled the state. The story didn't end there. After the dust settled and her home was completed through another firm, Lance came across a mugshot of his former client—charged with multiple counts of fraud. Driven by curiosity, he reached out to the man's first wife. What she shared over coffee confirmed everything: the man had been living a double life from the moment he arrived in Colorado. Some clients aren't just difficult. Some are dangerous. Listen to hear the full story. Morgan FriedmanLance's WebsiteLance's LinkedInLance's Instagram

6. Castle Garden Records and the Nativist Backlash In 1855, New York State opened Castle Garden to centralize immigration and protect new arrivals from urban swindlers. Hubert Glynn, a bilingual clerk, managed the station's meticulous records for nearly four decades. These records were far more detailed than federal manifests, documenting occupations and personal wealth, but they were tragically lost in an 1896 fire at Ellis Island. During this era, the Know-Nothing Party rose to power, fueled by anti-Catholic sentiment. They sought to disenfranchise the Irish by extending the wait for citizenship to 21 years, though the movement eventually collapsed as national focus shifted toward the slavery crisis. 61854 BELFAST

In the late ‘90s, Dana Giacchetto wasn't just managing money, he was managing access. As a financial advisor to Hollywood's elite, he moved in the same orbit as rising stars like Leonardo DiCaprio. But Dana's real addiction wasn't wealth – it was the scene. Positioning himself as a punk rock money manager, Dana blurred the line between business and nightlife, chasing clout as much as returns. Seduced by fame and proximity, he began dipping into client funds – mixing accounts, backing risky deals, and using their money to finance his own lavish lifestyle. What started as access turned into a con, where trust was the currency – and Dana spent it fast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I think I dated the Hinge Swindler for a weekend in Austin, Texas. This episode is part dating story, part nervous-system education, and part reality check for any woman who's ever overridden her intuition because the chemistry was that good. After two wildly intense dates with a man who seemed emotionally intelligent, self-aware, family-oriented, and deeply aligned with my values, my body started whispering that something wasn't right. Then the red flags escalated. A missing bank card. Mirroring. Confusing communication. Rage when I calmly asked a clarifying question. And the sudden realisation that romance fraud is a $1.15 billion-a-year industry in the US alone. This isn't about paranoia, or even protection…It's about discernment. In this episode, I break down:Why chemistry is instant but character is revealed over timeHow emotionally intelligent women still get pulled into dangerous dynamicsThe difference between intuition and self-sabotageWhy healthy men never punish curiosityHow love-bombing, mirroring, and spiritual language are used in romance fraudAnd why self-worth, boundaries, and nervous-system regulation are non-negotiable if you want real partnershipIf you've ever felt confused by someone who felt too good to be true, this episode will sharpen your discernment, strengthen your self-trust, and remind you that your standards are not the problem.Key Timestamps00:00 – I think I dated the Hinge Swindler06:30 – Romance fraud, intuition & why smart women still get scammed18:00 – Why I went on the apps (and what I was actually looking for)27:30 – The best first date of my life… and the feeling something was off38:00 – The missing bank card & the moment my body knew47:00 – When I calmly asked a question and he lost it1:01:30 – The 3×3 Dating Rule that saves you months of pain1:13:00 – Final lesson: standards, self-trust & healthy menConnect with Me:Want to work with me? Quico Toro joins to discuss Charlatans: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Hucksters Bamboozle the Media, the Markets, and the Masses, distinguishing the "parasitic" nature of the charlatan from the hit-and-run tactics of the scammer. He traces the lineage of the grift from the official alchemists of 16th-century Venice to the upsell tactics of Trump University, arguing that loneliness and the internet have created a "target-rich environment" for swindlers. Then, a pivot to the environment: Mike and Quico debate whether the "green halo" around solar and wind constitutes its own form of elite misinformation, and why the villainization of nuclear energy—and the partisanship of climate policy—has stalled real progress. It's springtime for charlatans. At least according to Quico Toro, coauthor (with my old friend Moises Naim) of Charlatans, a new screed about how grifters, swindlers and hucksters are bamboozling the media, the markets and the masses. If you listen to Toro, you wouldn't want to get out of bed in the morning. Everywhere - on our screens, in our churches, even in the White House - there lurk charlatans intent on stealing our souls. As you can tell from my rat-a-tat scepticism, I'm not totally convinced by such hysterical fearmongering. Though he's probably right that social isolation and AI-powered scams are making us sitting ducks for scammers. Anyway, at least there's no chapter about huckster podcasters in Charlatans. So you are safe here from bamboozlers of all stripes. 1. The Harm Standard Is Everything Quico's core thesis: charlatans aren't just persuasive people you disagree with - they leave a trail of destroyed lives. No harm = not a charlatan (even if you find them distasteful, like the astrology businesswoman he mentions).2. Your Deepest Beliefs Are Your Biggest Vulnerabilities Charlatans don't create new beliefs - they identify what you already passionately believe in (religion, crypto, politics, health) and exploit that commitment to manipulate you. The stronger your conviction, the easier you are to con.3. Technology + Social Isolation = Charlatan Playground AI and algorithms can now identify and target “marks” with unprecedented precision. Combined with loneliness and screen-mediated relationships (no flesh-and-blood friends to reality-check you), we're more vulnerable than ever.4. Not All Grifters Are Criminals Motivations vary: money, sex, power - the “dark triad.” Some are outright thieves (Madoff, SBF), others are narcissists or sexual predators using their influence. But they share antisocial personality traits and lack of remorse.5. Even Legitimate Movements Get Hijacked The Falwell Sr. vs Jr. example: sincere ideological movements (even ones you disagree with) can be credible, but charlatans infiltrate and weaponize them. Brexit, prosperity gospel, anti-vax - all started somewhere and got exploited.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. What makes us vulnerable to charlatans? A new book by journalist Quico Toro takes a close look at charismatic manipulators from literal snake oil peddlers to crypto scammer Sam Bankman-Fried. We talk to Toro about how charlatans exploit our need for certainty, belonging and leadership — and why the tricks are old, but thanks to viral amplification on social media, the scale is new. Toro's book, co-written with Moisés Naim, is “Charlatans: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Hucksters Bamboozle the Media, the Markets, and the Masses.” Guests: Francisco Toro, author, "Charlatans: How Grifters, Swindlers, and Hucksters "Bamboozle the Media, the Markets, and the Masses" - he's also director of climate repair at the Anthropocene Institute Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 242 is about putting ploughs into the ground, how the rural areas of much of the country was experiencing something of an agricultural revolution. It's rather a fascinating tale, because there are tremendous contradictions in what we're going to talk about this episode. As usual, there we will need to combine a global story with our local story —without doing so would be to stunt our awareness of the strands and tendrils that spread and connect. By the 1850s, Great Britain was manipulating trade and military as well as political power as reciprocating elements. This is a technique adopted by pretty much every empire since before Carthage. Political influence was used so as to extend and secure free exchange, in Britain's case commerce and anglicisation, spread political influence and welded alliances. As Lord Palmerston so aptly pointed out “…It is the business of Government to open and secure the roads for the Merchant…” Antiquated regimes were its enemy and foreign tariffs were its enemy, as anyone knows, the greatest enemy of free trade are tariffs. Empires were broken, the gouty and outdated Chinese, the religion-strangled Turkey, innumerable sheikdoms, sultanates and chieftancies were drawn into the invisible British empire of informal sway. When merchants manage affairs instead of men with guns, it's harder to pin down the essence of power — and also the dangers. The results of this grand vision were not encouraging by the 1870s and the Victorians were less sure of their panacea for both Asia and Africa. Among the ancient and invincibly conservative Confucian and Islamic rulers, no effective westernising collaborators had been found. The Tai'ping rebellion in China and the growing chaos in Muslim states appeared never ending. It was the United States that was gobbling up immigrants — most of Britain's emigrants went there, and the Victorians bought and sold more there than in any other single country. It had dawned on the British political elite that their commerical experience impressed a single portentous fact — that their most successful trading associations with the exception of the Indian Empire, were with Europeans transplanted abroad. They accounted for around 70 percent of all her investment overseas. The white communities in the temperate zones had the outlook and the institutions favourable to progress which the Asiatics and Africans seemed to lack. They offered customers with European tastes and money to spend. Mutual self-interest with whites of their empire meant private business of Great Britain commingled freely with that of Greater Britain and the once-colonial societies of the New World — the Americans and many in South America too. At the same time, the colonists were growing more bitter about Downing Street control and self-government appeared one solution. The aim was to avert the loss of more colonies and more American Wars of independence. So by the 1870s, confederated Canada, responsibly governed Australia and the Cape were regarded as constitutional embodiments of collaboration between British and colonial interests — all working at their best. The number of trading stores in the Transkei quadrupled to a few hundred, and all of this meant that there was a major qualitative shift in the cumsumption patterns of Africans. New permanent wants replaced needs, metal was now preferred to traditionally crafted pots and baskets, the cow-hide kaross was replaced by the Witney blanket, ploughs and all manner of tools flooded into these developing farms. Around South Africa, energy seemed to be surging. Take the highveld for example. The sour veld of the Harrismith district to be precise. Largely used for summer grazing, the farmers here often moved their herds into Natal every autumn. Below the Berg as they put, OnderBerg. Underberg.

Any newspaper editor will tell you readers love animal stories. The Oregonian/OregonLive's Samantha Swindler took that axiom to the next level this spring with a 12-part video series on the mysterious disappearance of Cosmo, the talking crow. She joins Editor Therese Bottomly on “Beat Check with The Oregonian” to discuss the narrative, which also was published on Instagram, Facebook and, of course, OregonLive. Cosmo first came to the newsroom's attention after a viral story out of Williams about a talking crow that had “befriended” an elementary school. Swindler, who works on the Here is Oregon features team, reached out to obtain audio or video of this supposed talking crow. She quickly learned Cosmo was missing and the crow may not have been the beloved local fixture we first envisioned. Originally conceived as a podcast, “The Mystery of Cosmo the Talking Crow” quickly morphed into an experiment in creative multimedia storytelling on TikTok, the social media platform so much in the headlines these days. In this episode of Beat Check, we talk about: --Why Swindler was drawn to the quirky story --The reporting challenges she faced --The question of whether Cosmo really did talk --Why humans can't resist anthropomorphizing animals -- that is, attributing human behaviors and motives and emotions to our pets Within the episode, Swindler refers to “Serial,” the groundbreaking and hugely popular true crime podcast (We are careful to note nothing about the Cosmo story involves actual true “crime.”). She also makes reference to a “milkshake duck” moment, a reference to a fictional duck that is cute and beloved until it is revealed to be racist. Like that internet meme, Cosmo, too, was cute on the outside but perhaps had a touch of evil within, depending on who is talking. And Swindler still hopes for “The Jinx” reveal, as in the HBO docuseries hot-mic moment where Robert Durst appears to confess.
