At Terrificon, I moderated an unforgettable panel with four generations of Fantastic Four voices — Humberto Ramos, Walter Simonson, Steve Englehart, Chris Claremont, and C.B. Cebulski.Humberto Ramos, now illustrating Marvel's current Fantastic Four with writer Ryan North, shared how he's balancing the Kirby legacy with his energetic, modern style. He spoke about designing new adventures while keeping the Richards family's emotional core intact.Walter Simonson reflected on his late '80s run, when he boldly reshaped Reed Richards, experimented with the lineup, and injected the series with the same cosmic energy that defined his acclaimed Thor.Steve Englehart recalled his 1980s stories full of Skrull intrigue, soap-opera tension, and attempts to modernize the FF amid Marvel's editorial shifts.Chris Claremont, best known for X-Men, discussed his early 2000s tenure exploring Sue Richards' evolution as leader and giving fresh dimension to Ben Grimm's humanity.C.B. Cebulski, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, rounded out the conversation by talking about the FF's place in Marvel's publishing future and the responsibility of shepherding “The World's Greatest Comic Magazine” in today's marketplace.Together, the panel offered candid stories, behind-the-scenes context, and a sweeping look at how the Fantastic Four has endured — and evolved — across decades of creators.
Hey listeners, Episode 302 is here and it's part 2 of our "Super-Fantastic Summer" episodes where, this week, we're taking a look at the other superhero film to hit theaters recently. Yes, this week, we're taking a look at the MCU's Fantastic Four: First Steps! It's not a stretch to say that we all liked this one, actually, this film rocks! It's HOT and we're going to be totally transparent about opinions!
INTRO:I'm finally back after my NDE from a month-long bout with H1N1 earlier this year. I'm Hank Davis, a nineteen year podcasting veteran, filmmaker, and soon to be musician (more on that in the coming weeks) and this is my review of Marvel's Fantastic Four. This is a spoiler-filled review of the movie and if you are overly sensitive to satire (that may or may not be funny) this won't be the podcast for you. SETTINGS:When it comes to the sets and immersion I feel that Fantastic Four shines. This is the first Marvel movie in recent years (that I've watched anyway) that has areas which actually feel populated and expansive. Maybe there are simply more people on Earth-828. We'd need to see the census data compared to Earth-616 but I digress. The retro design of the areas, vehicles, building interiors, clothing, and household items gave me a Jetsons meets Flash Gordon vibe. I thought they nailed costumes which are darn near impeccable. The aesthetics coalesce to create a believable world that simply hasn't been present in a Marvel film in quite some time. But a world is only as good as the characters you put in it.CHARACTERS:Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm is believable, balanced, and didn't overpower the movie like Marvel tends to do female leads.Ben Grimm's portrayal is about as spot on as there's been in any incarnation of the character. While not my favorite, Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm is likeable but not as punchy as the Chris Evans version. Thankfully, we didn't get the awkward “how are they related” gymnastics like the 2015 version. Outside of the writing Ralph Ineson does a solid job of bringing Galactus to life on the big screen. My sister's 8th grade sports trophy springs to life as Julia Garner attempts to give us a different take on Silver Surfer. While there's nothing like the original, Shalla-Bal didn't negatively impact the movie (outside of those initial concept renderings). Ultimately she portrayed a conflicted character that was believable. I laughed out loud when Stingray from Cobra Kai rolled in as the Mole Man. I guess Cobra Kai truly never dies! It's just been driven underground.Which unfortunately leads me to Reed Richards himself portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Pedro Pascal is as much Mister Fantastic as I'm Denzel Washington. I needed to see another Pedro lead like a golf club to the head (SFX). If you know, you know. He delivers amazing lines like "I don't know." and others that make you second guess the idea that he's the smartest man alive. I am suffering from Pedro fatigue!HITS:I'll say it again, the costumes were excellent! Even though I couldn't help but itch myself uncomfortably while looking at that material, the suits were incredible. The Thing was done justice in this movie! I thought about how cool playing a video game would be as he smashed through the columns of that building. Can we get The Thing vs The Hulk please? That's one of my favorite comic book childhood matchups.I liked the blending of high and low tech items. Seeing physical records made me nostalgic but didn't take away from the sophisticated feel the film delivers. The message of world-wide unity in the face of extreme turmoil was a refreshing insertion that didn't feel like a ‘nine iron to the head' political lecture.Who doesn't love a superpowered baby? Although I wished they would have fleshed that out more in this particular movie instead of hoping I watch what's next. A cute baby trumps an obnoxious dog any day of the week. I'm looking at you James Gunn!MISSES:Galactus is estimated to be approximately 440 meters tall.
Today we talk about the time Reed Richards had Ben Grimm repeat what he said and came up with a FANTASTIC name for his team of FOUR, but THE THING is the name was kind of a STRETCH, but in the end the name was FIRE, even if the rest of the team COULD NOT SEE IT at first. Send us a textThe Fantastic Four has finally arrived in the MCU, but not in the way anyone expected. Rather than another tired origin story, we're dropped into Universe 828—a gorgeously realized retro-futuristic world where Marvel's First Family are already established heroes beloved by the public. What makes this film truly special is how it balances cosmic spectacle with intimate family drama. When we meet Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben, they're facing their greatest challenge yet: impending parenthood. Sue Storm is pregnant, and Reed's anxiety about what their altered genetics might mean for their child drives much of the emotional narrative. Pedro Pascal brings a fascinating vulnerability to Reed Richards—a brilliant mind constantly plagued by feelings of inadequacy, always believing he should be able to do more.Vanessa Kirby delivers what might be the definitive Sue Storm performance, finally showcasing the character's immense power that comic readers have known about for decades. The climactic sequence where she confronts Galactus while literally in labor is both visually stunning and emotionally resonant—a mother's fierce protection taken to cosmic levels. Meanwhile, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach bring fresh energy to Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm respectively, with their relationship capturing that perfect balance of friendly ribbing and genuine brotherhood. The film's visual aesthetic deserves special mention—Universe 828 feels like tomorrow as imagined in the 1960s, with flying cars, impossible architecture, and a sense of optimism that's been missing from recent superhero fare. This distinct setting, coupled with the post-credits tease of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom appearing in Franklin Richards' nursery, suggests an exciting direction for the future of the MCU.Whether you're a longtime Fantastic Four fan or completely new to these characters, this film offers something genuinely fresh in the superhero landscape. It reminds us why these characters have endured for over sixty years—because at their heart, they're not just superheroes, they're family. And that's fantastic.Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbANew Video: The Divine Structure Hidden in Superman's Timeline: https://youtu.be/iHgcBcCSJgM?si=9xmcl76NZR3Sdx3wSupport the show

Editors - Nona Khodai ACE and Tim Roche The Fantastic Four: First Steps sees editors Nona Khodai and Tim Roche reunite for the 37th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the second reboot of the Fantastic Four film series. The film also marks the first time the two have worked together since Marvel's live action series debut, WandaVision. Although each had worked with him separately before, WandaVision was the first time both Nona and Tim worked with director Matt Shakman on a Marvel project. The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes place in 1964, as the world celebrates the fourth anniversary of astronauts Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm becoming the superhero team known as the Fantastic Four (Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing). But the celebration doesn't last for long as the four face their most daunting challenge yet as they defend Earth from Galactus and Silver Surfer. NONA KHODAI ACE A Southern California native and graduate of USC's Cinematic Arts school, Nona started her career as an assistant on such films as the Bad Robot production, Super 8. Her first foray as an editor on a "superhero" project came courtesy of showrunner Eric Kripke who brought her aboard the The Boys, where she would work with director Matt Shakman for the first time. Nona was twice nominted for an Emmy award for her work on Marvel's WandaVision, and nominated for another Emmy for Marvel's Ms. Marvel. Send us a textAs promised, this week on episode #109 of "Fabulous Film & Friends we're going to weigh in on the two big ticket super hero extravaganzas from the Summer of 2025: James Gunn's Superman starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisando, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio and Nicholas Hoult up against The Fantastic Four: First Steps directed by Matt Shakman and starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson. Returning for yet another daringly detailed deep dive into the world of fantastical four colored fantasies is nephew to a comic bookstore Kingpin, author, teacher and hypnotherapist, Joe Field. Before we blast off into the Ultra-Negative Zone, the synopses: In 2025's Superman, it is 3 years into his mission and Earth's Champion, The Man of Steel has met his match in Lex Luthor who causes a distraction with a giant monster and breaks into Superman's secret Fortress of Solitude where he translates a message from Superman's parents in which they instruct their son Kal El –Superman's Kryptonian name-- to take over earth and spread his seed. Using this jarringly awkward info to turn public opinion against our hero, Luthor has also made a clone of Superman called Ultraman who continually batters and beats the Man of Steel into submission. On top of that, Luthor has a Pocket Universe where he jails his enemies including his ex-girlfriends. And Lex has Ultraman place Superman in a cage with another a super powered being named Metamorpho who can weaken Superman by turning his hands into Kryptonite. Ultimately, Luthor's cruelty overwhelms Metamorpho who helps Superman escape the pocket universe but it in doing so, the unstable dimensional rift threatens to swallow Earth. It is only with the help of scrappy reporter Lois Lane and a team of heroes called The Justice Gang that Superman that is able to beat Ultraman, Luthor and close the rift. There's also some political stuff going on with two made up countries going to War because of Luthor's manipulations. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps it has been four years since Reed Richards, Sue Storm, her brother Johnny and Ben Grimm were transformed by cosmic rays into the world's protectors, super stretchy genius Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and the rock man known as The Thing who are biggest celebrities on the planet. The exciting news that team leaders Reed Richards and Sue Storm are expecting their first child is put on the back burner by the arrival of the Silver Surfer the herald of the planet eating Celestial known as Galactus. Galactus tells the Fantastic Four that he will spare Earth in exchange for their yet unborn child, but that his too high a price to pay. With the public opinion against them, and world watching nervously, the team springs into action and devises a incredible plan to teleport planet earth into the far reaches of space. But then the Surfer and Galactus arrive and put the kabosh on the plan so the FF amends the plan to send Galactus himself into the far reaches of space, which seemed like the better strategy to begin with. So which movie was dumber and more suitable for booger eating six year olds? Find out!Watch to the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/cZCszsepEVM

In this episode, Eden and Peter dive into Fantastic Four: First Steps, a surprisingly hopeful and aesthetically stunning addition to the MCU. They unpack the film's utopian vision, its fresh take on superhero storytelling, and why it might be one of Marvel's most emotionally resonant efforts to date. It's the end of an era and the dawning of a new one. Fantastic Four: First Steps was phenomenal in ways that the Nerd Alert Girls cheer about. Johnny Storm gets to show off his emotional intelligence; Sue Storm gives major Mama Bear energy; Reed Richards is a precious, neurodivergent bean; and Ben Grimm is the best boi who deserves the world. From the superb casting to the emotionally evocative family themes, this movie was a slam dunk and, hopefully, a foreshadowing of things to come for Marvel.

To pay for his daughter Vienna's ballet school in Paris, he returns to pro golf—and chaos ensues. The film leans hard into callbacks, celebrity cameos, and legacy sequel nostalgia. Director: Kyle Newacheck Writers: Tim Herlihy & Adam Sandler Cast: Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin Ben Stiller as Hal L. (in sobriety group leadership) Bad Bunny as Happy's new caddy Benny Safdie as golf mogul Frank Manatee Additional Cast: Sunny Sandler (Vienna), Sadie Sandler, Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, John Daly, Rory McIlroy, Eminem (cameos), and more sport & music legends Production Notes: Produced by Happy Madison and STX Films, filmed in North Jersey over fall 2024; directed by Newacheck with music by Rupert Gregson-Williams. The production is built around cameo-heavy nostalgia and real-world athletes. Budget: Estimated at $30 million, modest compared to legacy sequel standards. Distribution: Released globally via Netflix on July 25, 2025. Reception: Critics remain divided—mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (65%) and Popcornmeter (~70%). Praise comes for Sandler's commitment and cameo spectacle; criticism centers on overreliance on callbacks, tonally uneven storytelling (including a shocking death), and lazy legacy sequel tropes. Some outlets called it a “cinematic disaster,” while others saw it as funny and heartfelt escapism. Marvel's First Family has returned to the big screen.....could the THIRD (or actually fourth if we're counting the Roger Corman version which never got a proper theatrical release) time be the charm? Well it helps that they brought out the big guns: Matt Shankman (WandaVision) is directing and the all-star cast features Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as Reed Richards otherwise known as Mr. Fantastic, Vaness Kirby (Mission Impossible Fallout, Napoleon) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One, Gladiator II) playing Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, Girls) as Ben Grimm otherwise known as Thing. This is still very much a stand-alone story mostly separate from the MCU (which this is a part of) as the Fab Four are settled in New York City but on an alternative Earth. And THIS Earth has some scary new visitors....the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) has come calling declaring that GALACTUS (Ralph Ineson) is on his way to consume the planet....who can stop them?? Let's find out out if Producer Kevin Feige's latest big screen heroes are up to the task.....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

It's finally time to talk in full about Marvel Studios' latest film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Find out why the guys felt that Matt Shakman and the rest of the team finally made the great adaptation of Marvel's First Family that we've all been waiting for. Plus, the guys discuss why Vanessa Kirby is the heart of the movie, the intepretation of Reed Richards, whether they could've used more Ben Grimm, how this film showcases Johnny Storm in ways we haven't seen before, why Galactus and Shalla-Bal are antagonists not villains, what that mid-credit means for the future, and much more! In this episode of Catch These Vibes, Sharmanique dives deep into the legacy of Marvel's very first superhero team — the Fantastic Four. From their 1961 comic book debut to their complicated journey through live-action adaptations, this episode explores how Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm redefined what it meant to be a superhero family. We unpack their origin story, iconic villains like Doctor Doom and Galactus, and the cultural impact they've had on Marvel storytelling. With a reboot released this past weekend, it's the perfect time to revisit why the Fantastic Four still matters.
The Fantastic Four finally arrive in the MCU... sort of? Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing must unite to save an alternate Earth from Ralph Ineson's Galactus and Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, but are their power's combined enough to set Marvel's Multiverse Saga back on track? What about the threat of Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom and the arrival of AVENGERS DOOMDAY? Read transcriptFlame on, podcast listeners! This week we're stretching our way back to 2005 to tackle the Fantastic Four game that somehow managed to land on more consoles than Reed Richards has had scientific breakthroughs. Based on the first Fox movie that made us all question whether Hollywood truly understood what “fantastic” meant, this multi-platform adventure promised to let us clobber our way through levels faster than Ben Grimm goes through doorframes. Joining us for this cosmic-powered gaming expedition is Anthony Sytko from Capes on the Couch, who's here to help us determine whether this game was the ultimate power or just another case of “it's clobberin' time” gone wrong. We'll be exploring how this tie-in game managed to squeeze onto everything from GameCube to Game Boy Advance, and whether any version actually captured the magic of Marvel's first family – or if they all just left us feeling more invisible than Sue Storm on a bad day. So grab your unstable molecules costume and prepare for a gaming experience that's sure to be more unpredictable than Johnny Storm's dating life. It's time to see if this Fantastic Four adaptation was truly marvelous or just another victim of the superhero movie game curse! Learn such things as: Does yelling “FLAME ON!” improve your loading times? Is this the worst timeline for Dr. Doom? How long can we go without saying something about America's Ass? And so much more! Andrew Gordon & John Humphrey unite for a Reaction & Review of Fantastic Four (2005), the action-packed superhero blockbuster that brought Marvel's First Family to the big screen! Directed by Tim Story (Barbershop, Ride Along), this early 2000s adaptation follows four astronauts who gain extraordinary powers after a cosmic radiation accident—setting the stage for one of the most iconic Marvel origin stories. Ioan Gruffudd (King Arthur, Titanic) stars as Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic, the brilliant but emotionally awkward scientist with the power of elasticity. Jessica Alba (Sin City, Into the Blue) plays Sue Storm aka the Invisible Woman, whose force fields and invisibility are matched by her inner strength and intelligence. Michael Chiklis (The Shield, American Horror Story) brings pathos and grit to Ben Grimm aka The Thing, a rock-skinned powerhouse grappling with his new form. Chris Evans (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Knives Out) blazes onto the scene as Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch, whose cocky charm and flame powers light up the screen. The late Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck, Charmed) menaces as Victor Von Doom aka Doctor Doom, a power-hungry industrialist turned metal-skinned tyrant. Kerry Washington (Scandal, Django Unchained) also stars as Alicia Masters, the kind-hearted sculptor who sees beyond Ben Grimm's monstrous exterior. From the unforgettable Brooklyn Bridge rescue scene to the climactic final battle with Doom, Fantastic Four features early 2000s Marvel flair, flashy powers, and crowd-pleasing teamwork. Picture this: You're facing Ben Grimm, better known as The Thing. His massive rocky body towers over you, each movement causing the ground to tremble. A new final (??) trailer has dropped for Fantastic Four: First Steps, and it kinda feels like damage control. It seems to address a lot of the criticism of the previous trailer, including way less Sue Storm a close up of the female Silver Surfer, more Galactus and banter between the men in the group. But... Ben Grimm with a beard isn't something that's selling me on this one, I gotta tell you. Watch this podcast episode on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify.
