Phil Liggett MBE is affectionately referred to as the “Voice of Cycling”. Phil was last on The Greg Bennett Show back in episode 28, almost two years ago! He truly is the “Voice of Cycling”. In fact, the recent documentary film of his life is called exactly that. This year is the 50th year that he'll be working at the Tour De France - what a fantastic achievement that is. Add to that his 16 Olympic Games, and you get an understanding of why he is held in such high regard. In 2009, he was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame. Phil is currently residing with his wife Trish on a game reserve in South Africa where he helps with efforts to protect rhinos from poachers. It was created by an Australian film crew and has been over 2 years in the making. However it has not been without challenges, Phil explains some of the back story. 21:01 - Phil is incredibly philanthropic and is involved in saving rhinos in South Africa and also building a Vocational School offering quality and relevant skills training programs to vulnerable girls in an area where life opportunities are limited. The Paul Sherwen Project was established to support the good that Paul was enacting in Uganda and across East Africa – empowering local people to drive progress and economic development through education, job skills, and personal training, while promoting & protecting the unique culture and environment of their communities. If you feel this powerful project resonates with you, you can donate here 27:43 - Phil managed to turn his hobby of cycling into a career ... and it all started with his first job for ₤15 (approx $25) Listen in for the clues to Phil's success in life ... his incredible work ethic. 33:37 - Phil greatest career failure was not becoming a pro cyclist ... however it led him to his career for the past 50 years ... commentating pro cycling. 43:44 - Phil describes his greatest career highlight ... This story from Phil around Eric Zabel who was celebrating his birthday within the peloton proves why Phil Liggett is so loved as a commentator. 54:10 - So where did all the Phil Liggett quotes come from? Liggett-isms are a thing! "Dancing on the pedals ... The Rollercoaster of pain ... He's wearing the mask of pain ... Once again, they've stretched the elastic. ... It's rather like holding back the flood with a little finger ..." Phil explains how all these quotes (and more) came about. 57:46 - Paul Sherwen was a cherished friend and colleague in Phil Liggett's life. Paul Sherwen was an English professional racing cyclist and later a broadcaster on cycling, notably the Tour de France. Paul Sherwen passed on December 2, 2018. 1:05:08 - Phil names his three living people (non-family), that he'd invite to dinner. * Spoiler alert * The story Phil tells of his experience with the warden of the prison that incarcerated Nelson Mandela is fascinating. 1:14:22 - Phil gives us his exclusive predictions for the 2022 Tour de France. 01:18:08 - What's next for Phil Liggett? 01:21:41 - Interview ends. He explains both the pros, and cons of the training and nutrition from back then. 29:07 - Being an elite athlete meant missing out on friend and family time back home ... Cycling has always been a part of Christian Vande Velde's life. From current color commentary on NBC's broadcast of top professional race to his storied career which crested with 4th place in the 2008 Tour de France to his swan song as race champion of the USA Pro Challenge (aka Tour of Colorado) in 2013. Brought up in a household of cyclists, led by his father John, a two-time Olympian, Christian talks about his lineage, fighting through a rash of crash-related injuries at inopportune times to life inside the commentary booth and his unique relationship with former colleague Paul Sherwen. For both the hardcore fan or the novice, Vande Velde (aka "CVV") tells plenty of engaging and earnest stories from his life on and off the bike. Sign up for the newsletter
The Voice Of Cycling, Phil Liggett joins us on the Bicycling Australia Cinettica Podcast. Phil discusses the feature film about his life, the loss of Paul Sherwen, the Lance Armstrong years, the history of the Tour Down Under and more. This is a deep insight into the life and times of Phil Liggett. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In Part 2 of the The Outer Line: "Perspectives on Pro Cycling", Phil Liggett provides insight to some of the top Tour de France champions, talks about his life in Africa and animal conservation, his early days in the hotbed of British culture in the 1960s in Liverpool, and life inside the commentary box with former partner Paul Sherwen. Phil Liggett is the Voice of Cycling and known to American audiences for generations for Tour de France commentary every July. In the first of this two-part series of The Outer Line: "Perspectives on Pro Cycling", host Steve Brunner talks to Liggett about life in and out of cycling, including his unintended start in broadcasting to his long-time friendship with colleague Paul Sherwen to his early days of racing and directing Britain's Milk Race. As always, Liggett is chock-full of good tales.
The production of today's edition of "The Aid Station" with Phil Liggett, The Voice of Cycling, was an endurance event in itself which took almost a week to complete due to him being stranded in a remote game reserve in South Africa with limited connectivity. In this entertaining edition Phil shares the parallels of the challenges he experienced last year following the death of his dear friend and co-commentator for 33 years, Paul Sherwen and the impact of COVID-19 on his life in 2020. He talks candidly about the impact on the cycling calendar. He believes "it will never be the same" and questions how many of the Pro teams will be able to survive if there is an extended lock-down. He also wonders how the pro riders will be able to be fit enough to ride the Tour de France if it is able to go ahead in August.
Finally time for the Tour. The Grand Depart in Brussels saw some drama. Some crashes, huge crowds and a photo finish. The boys jump into the new studio in Aspen to break it all down. They touched on memories of Paul Sherwen, Bob Roll in the booth, Jakob's senseless crash and a historic win. Today's episode was brought to you by PowerDot, Roka, High Brew Coffee and RoadID.
December 26, 2018 The Just Riding Along Show Page ABOUT THIS EPISODE The episode opens on a dark note: this episode was recorded on December 2nd, the day that Paul Sherwen died of a heart attack. Paul Sherwen was a long time on air personality for the Tour de France, and while we all liked to poke fun at him, the man taught us all a lot about castles, group riding, racing dynamics, and much more. I hope this show brings you half the joy that his coverage of the Tour brought me – Matt. SHOW DONATIONS -None this week If you would like to support the show, CLICK HERE. We want to hear from you! I mention the tragic loss of Paul Sherwen to cycling. It is going to seem very strange to not have him along side Phil Liggett during future TdF broadcasts. I go over what I have been doing since August since that was the last time I had published a podcast. Also I do a little update on the Jeff Galloway Half Marathon That took place on Dec. 9th. This podcast was recorded on a Zoom H1 Handy Recorder and edited using Hindenburg Journalist software. Raphaële Lemieux, who retired from speed skating and road riding roughly 11 years ago, picked up racing fixed-gear bikes a few years ago. She’s been doing pretty well at that discipline. This year, she won the Red Hook Crit in Brooklyn and the Red Hook series overall. She discusses the fun of racing fixed, the speed-skating skills that transfer over to her cycling endeavours and what it’s like balancing a 40-hour workweek and racing at a high level. In this episode’s Full Send/No Send segment, Dan Walker and Matthew Pioro wrestle with UCI regulations about sock height, holiday cycling challenges and clothing made specifically for indoor cycling. (Find out who tries to get away with a shrug on a podcast.) They give a final big full send to Paul Sherwen, who recently passed. Finally, writer Tom Babin talks Spikes on Bikes. In the most recent issue of Canadian Cycling Magazine, Babin has a feature about the harm-reduction program based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The program comprises “peers” who head out into the neighbourhood on bikes. They do everything from saving people from overdosing to offering advice on getting off the streets. Often, the peers themselves have experience with addiction and homelessness. It’s a story of hope and community building amid the opioid crisis. December 6 | In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe remember Paul Sherwen, who died at the weekend aged 62. Sherwen was a pioneering rider – heading to France to make it as a professional in the late 1970s when very few British or English-speaking riders managed to make that breakthrough. He was the first of the 'second wave' of English-speakers to tackle the Tour de France and he paved the way for the likes of Graham Jones, Sean Yates and Robert Millar, as well as Phil Anderson and Allan Peiper from Australia. Sherwen rode the Tour seven times for the Fiat and La Redoute teams, finishing it five times, he was twice British national champion, and when he retired he was a directeur sportif for the iconic Raleigh-Banana team. But he is perhaps best known to millions of British, American and Australian cycling fans as one half of the television commentary double-act he formed with Phil Liggett. For successive generations of cycling fans he has been a friendly, welcoming voice for newcomers discovering a complex sport. He was also one of the first team press officers, with the Motorola team in the early 1990s, and – having been brought up in Kenya – he returned to Africa and lived in Uganda, where his passion for the people and the countryside was obvious to everyone who met him. In this episode we hear from Sherwen's great friend and colleague Phil Liggett, from contemporaries from his early professional years, John Herety, Sean Yates and Tim Harris, from journalist Luke Edwardes-Evans, American rider Ian Boswell and François Thomazeau and Orla Chennaoui.
