Long-serving listeners might recall that for episode 45 of the podcast Sam Stafford published a conversation with Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, about the then Housing, Communities & Local Government Committee's recently-published report on the future of the planning system in England. Clive chaired that committee and has been involved in housing and planning-related select committees of different names since 2002. He has been a member of parliament since 1992. That 2021 report, which considered the ‘Planning for the Future' white paper of August 2020, highlighted concerns about "the lack of detail, which has made it very difficult to assess the possible practical implications” and concluded that “Government should consult on the details of proposed reforms to prevent unintended consequences and harms resulting from them”. Here we are a couple of years on and the now Levelling Up, Housing & Communities Committee, which Clive still chairs, has published another report on reforms to national planning policy and he very kindly made time to record another online conversation with Sam about it. Their wide-ranging, whistle-stop conversation takes in, amongst the other issues covered by the Committee's inquiry, the politics of the NPPF consultation, housing targets, a 'Plan for England', Green Belt (obviously), the Infrastructure Levy and local authority resources. Bottleshare founder Christopher Glenn lives to help those in need Last week we sat down at Bottleshare Benefit Bash Vol. 1 to talk with Bottleshare founder Christopher Glenn as well as his collaboration partners Trey Sinclair of Dry County Brewing and Sean O'Keefe of Pontoon Brewing. Chris' story is pretty amazing, after a serious accident left him unable to return to his previous career his former boss (Sinclair) shared an idea he had for "The Bottleshare."  Chris was excited, ran with it, and has grown it into something much bigger than the original idea.  Bottleshare's motto is Raising Glasses, Raising Hopes and their mission is to help those in the craft beverage industry that face hardships that pose a financial burden.  At the Benefit Bash, Chris presented a check for $15,000 to Jennifer Barnes, widow of Modern Hops co-founder Philip Barnes. [caption id="attachment_46754" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Bottleshare founder Christopher Glenn presents a check for $15,000 to Jennifer Barnes, widow of Modern Hops co-founder Philip Barnes, at the Bottleshare Benefit Bash Vol 1.[/caption] Collaboration is key Glenn tells us many times how the support of Dry County and Sinclair helped grow Bottleshare.  One of the ways the organization raises funds is through collaboration beers.  Dry County was Bottleshare's first collaboration partner and have partnered with them on other beers as well.  More collaborations are coming up from breweries like Atlanta's New Realm and New Orleans' Urban South. Although slightly delayed due to some medical needs, early this year Glenn will embark on his #RGSA2020 tour.  That's Raising Glasses, Saving Asses; a slight spin on the core slogan.  RGSA will take Bottleshare across the US with stops in New Orleans and Denver already scheduled.  The mission is to raise awareness of the organization, brew up some collaborations, and find partners for their new Bottleshare Collective. Thirteen Across - Action Novel - Action-Packed FBI ThrillerQuote:"Katherine be mindful of origins and the clock. The puzzle is greater than riddles and pain. The quest for truth is not for the faint at heart. Survive if you can." Thirteen Across Book Review:Hang on for a terroristic rollercoaster ride! Thirteen Across is an action novel, and an FBI thriller adventure, hurtling readers through Washington, D.C.FBI Special Agent Kate Morton somehow manages to survive her early morning railway commute after the commuter-packed train is bombed and derailed. Philip Barnes, a government lab rat, is the domestic terrorist responsible for the bombing. Philip’s super power is extraordinarily high intelligence. Kate soon discovers the evil-minded Barnes is hell bent on revenge and has thrust her into a frantic race against time to solve a cryptic crossword puzzle (with a violent solution) before the stroke of midnight.Kate is determined to thwart Philip’s plan and she is quick to accept that she cannot accomplish this goal on her own. The Thirteen Across storyline flies towards midnight at a hurried pace. The crossword puzzle, and its possible solutions, takes the characters through the nation’s capital city searching for victims in churches, underground tunnels and more. Barnes’ high-tech weaponized autonomous/driver-less vehicles travel the city undetected.Thirteen Across reads like an action-packed spy movie. I can just picture Jennifer Garner as Katherine Morgan. And I can see Kate's team of strange bedfellows, with Steve Carell as William Shortz, a NY Times crossword editor/master crossword puzzle solver, and Gal Gadot as Rachel Pratt, whose super power is self-healing. I can imagine all three of them in Thirteen Across scrambling at a frenzied pace to save lives and prevent disaster.I found Thirteen Across to be unputdownable. The storyline is an original page-turner with plenty of plot twists to keep it moving ever forward to its ultimate conclusion. And yet when the story ended, it left me yearning for a great action-packed sequel. And I think that's outstanding! If you like action adventure novels, I believe you will love Dan Grant’s Thirteen Across!Get the BookRead my full book review of Thirteen Across and lots more book reviews on my blog site BookClubReporter.comDisclaimer: I am a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for me to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Running a successful business can be hard and the financials overwhelming, but knowing your numbers is key to knowing your business. That’s what Philip Barnes, founder of CFO Insight, told me. A Chartered Accountant, Philip has worked with over 50 business in a range of industries since 2006 in either non-executive board roles or as a consultant. Pulling his wealth of knowledge of helping companies in distress and helping Australian tech startups commercialise in North America together, CFO Insight was founded in 2006. The company helps SMEs solve some of the major and most common business problems, and helps them to shape their business, primarily for success.
