It's Acadiana: Out to Lunch

Some people build businesses on big ideas—others on big hearts. Sometimes, the best business plan is just knowing how to help people. Music might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to helping people, but for Vanessa Lomas, it’s her love language…or maybe help language. Vanessa is the owner of TheraCare Music Therapy. Ninety percent of TheraCare’s clients are autistic, have down syndrome or cerebral palsy. The idea behind music therapy is that it can help people express or cope with their feelings. That can be a powerful mode of connection, for instance, for people with autism. Vanessa is a military kid who’s lived all over the place. She landed in Lafayette in 2014 and has made it her mission to support people like her brother, who is autistic and nonverbal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from William Carey University and a master’s in music and music therapy from Florida State University. She is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and also specializes in neonatal music therapy. Vanessa is also involved with CYT and volunteers at her church’s children’s ministry. Roy Hebert knows a thing or two about business. He’s been in banking, finance, and the oilfield, and now he’s giving that knowledge away for free. Roy is a mentor with SCORE, a nationwide organization that helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. A Kaplan native, Roy attended UL for both his undergraduate degree and MBA. His career spans decades in the financial sector, including roles in commercial banking, corporate finance, and consulting. Roy is an adjunct professor at SLCC, and that’s where he discovered SCORE, a program of the U.S. Small Business Administration. SCORE, an acronym for Service Core of Retired Executives is a free service that connects experienced business leaders with burgeoning entrepreneurs. Roy says his clients come from all walks of life and range in sector and scale. They could be starting a landscaping business or getting an oilfield service company off the ground. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. You can find photos from this show at itsacadiana.com.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ryan Pécot – Adopted Dog Brewing

Discover Lafayette

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2025 52:26

Ryan Pécot, proprietor of Adopted Dog Brewing, is a successful commercial realtor with Sterling Properties as well as a force in changing the food and entertainment landscape in Lafayette. Adopted Dog Brewing offers a family friendly place to bring your kids and your dogs. Located at 329 Dulles Drive, it celebrated its second anniversary on February 1, 2025. A public celebration will be held on February 22 , 2025, where The Good Dudes will be playing. "They're at the brew house right now brewing a beer with my brew master called the Good Brew 2, a Mexican cerveza with lime that we will release on our birthday party weekend," Ryan says. Ironically, Ryan didn't drink beer much in his college days. And he recounted that when he and his younger brother would travel to sporting events, his brother would always sample local craft beers, while Ryan would choose generic alcoholic beverages. "Ultimately I got jealous of him. And being jealous of your younger brother is not that cool. I realized he was getting more out of our trips than I was because he was getting a local flair whereas I was just getting the regular thing. I made a New Year's resolution to learn how to drink beer. And on January 1st, I drank a beer and it was awful. And I drank another one. I couldn't figure it out. I just didn't like it. And then I got to a spot where I did. On one of those trips, I said if I ever learn how to drink beer and if I ever open a brewery, this is some of the things I'd like to do. Our flagship beer, which is aptly named 337, is a Blueberry Blonde inspired by a place called Boston BeerWorks across from Fenway Park. We walked in there and saw a bunch of ladies drinking beer, which was not normal. They all had blueberries in their beer. How are all these chicks drinking beer? Like, what is going on? And then I realized, that if I ever open a brewery, I'm going to offer a blueberry lager, because clearly this works." A few years back, Ryan wasn't planning to open a brewery, but was inspired to open Adopted Dog by synchronistic events. One day, he and a friend were driving around the industrial area near Dulles Drive looking for a site to store their UL tailgating trailer and assorted gear, while waiting to have a B. F. Goodrich tire changed on Ryan's truck. They happened to pass by 329 Dulles, the site of the former Cafe 329 which was owned and developed by Peter Martin. "We went through that cul de sac by SLCC. I didn't even know that road existed. We came across the real estate, and I asked my buddy James to pull in, and I peered through the windows and I'm like, it's awesome. I'm opening a brewery. James said 'What?' I said I'm opening a brewery here. I'm telling you, as a real estate guy, when you see it, you know it. If I was going to open a brewery in Lafayette, this is the physical spot. You're five minutes to everything, but you're kind of in a donut hole of nothing else offering all that land. You sit there and you feel like you're not in Lafayette for an hour." "I look for the little things. As soon as I saw the building, I realized that the patio on the back deck faced the southeast. That means you're going to get shaded the quickest in our hot, long summers. If we were going to ever eventually build a deck and a stage that would be positioned correctly, the wind cut through the way the heat felt. The building with the high ceilings has pros and cons, but generally, it worked and checked all the boxes." The site is also located in mid-city Lafayette, which was important to Ryan in his quest to develop establishments in the heart of our city, just as he has enjoyed when traveling across the country and getting to know the heart of local communities. While the land and building were perfect, opening a brewing company in Lafayette was a challenge. Ryan says, "Without my background as a commercial broker, I'm not sure I would have been successful in opening Adopted Dog Brewing.

Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal is a passionate Indigenous community leader, educator, and advocate based in British Columbia, Canada. She is a member of the Sk̲wxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the Líl̓wat7ul Nations, and her career is focused on advancing the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples in her community and beyond. Alison is particularly interested in language revitalization, land stewardship, and cultural preservation and has worked extensively in these areas throughout her career.Mixalhítsa7's leadership and advocacy work have earned her several awards, including the Order of British Columbia and the Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievement in Canada. She has also served on several boards and committees related to Indigenous issues, including the First Peoples' Cultural Council and the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. Through her tireless work and dedication to Indigenous rights and cultural preservation, Mixalhítsa7 has become a respected and influential voice in her community and beyond. The podcast with Alison Pascal was a heart-wrenching conversation about the historical and current struggles of Indigenous communities in Canada. Pascal spoke about how the Canadian government's intervention in the lives of Indigenous people has caused them to suffer from alcohol consumption, drug use, and poor food management. It was not an accident, but a deliberate choice that resulted in intergenerational trauma affecting their physical and mental health. Pascal shared a story about how immigrant families were starving and freezing, but Indigenous nature helped them survive by teaching them how to farm. However, the Indigenous people were forced to side with the British to fight the French and Spanish, resulting in the loss of their land, which is now a commodity that can be sold. Today, Indigenous people are conditioned to stay inside and are denied access to gathering and foraging, leading to a loss of culture and spiritual connection to the land. The residential school system, which separated Indigenous children from their parents and land, led to a truth and reconciliation diet where children worked on school farms but were not allowed to eat the food, resulting in malnutrition and chronic diseases. Pascal questioned if it is possible to reprogram our bodies to not have chronic diseases and suggested the use of ancient medicines to maintain good health. The podcast also highlighted the issue of mental health stigma in Indigenous communities, which is exacerbated by the social aspects that white people see in Indigenous people, such as domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, and gambling. Pascal spoke about the importance of a sustainable program to get kids onto the land to foster their interest in culture and the need for parents to be involved. Indigenous people are part of the land, and the land is part of them, but the spiritual loss has led to an autonomic economy that is split into unfarmable land, affecting their drinking water. Overall, the podcast highlighted the interconnectedness of intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional health, and how the wellbeing of Indigenous communities in Canada is essential for all living beings and the land. Pascal's emotional testimony left a lasting impact on listeners, calling for immediate action to address the long-standing issues affecting Indigenous people in Canada. Find Dr.Alison Pascal at:LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/3TYHubVWebsite: www.SLCC.caFacebook: @SLCCWhistler, @SistersInSpiritVigil2015, @Alison.PascalInstagram: @alison.pascal Discussed on the PODCAST:Unreserved Podcast: The dark history of Canada's Food Guide: How experiments on Indigenous children shaped nutrition policy with Dr. Ian Mosby - https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1887262787815Dr Ian Mosby - http://www.ianmosby.ca/GATHER Documentary - https://gather.film/First Nations Drinking Water – www.firstnationsdrinkingwater.caSLCC Ancient Medicines Exhibit - https://slcc.ca/exhibits/ancient-medicine/ Learn More: Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? Some would even argue that we are closer now than we were in those fateful days, when Soviet missiles in Cuba almost triggered a nuclear war between the US and the USSR." Our guest is Ryan Pécot, proprietor of Tchoup's MidCity Smokehouse, a full-service BBQ restaurant and bar located at 117 S. College Road in Lafayette. Discover Lafayette is proud to partner with Eat Lafayette and Lafayette Travel to showcase this young entrepreneur whose creative concepts are redefining the 'cool' culture of Lafayette. Ryan's work ethic started early in life when he said he'd like a car and his dad, Kirby Pécot, told him to go get a job. He took an entry-level job at Outback Steakhouse dumping the trash cans and worked his way up to management and becoming a part of the training team for the chain. Today, Ryan's typical workday is jam-packed as he also serves as Senior Retail Leasing and Development Advisor with Stirling Properties, a career he began after graduation from UL-Lafayette in 2001, and as the owner of Paws & Paw Paw's boarding/daycare/grooming facilities with his wife, Traci. Another endeavor, Adopted Dog Brewing, is also anticipated to open soon at 329 Dulles Drive (near SLCC) which will be the only brewery within the city limits of Lafayette. Ryan and Traci have always enjoyed traveling and looking for offbeat restaurants and breweries while on the road. Ryan calls himself a beer aficionado as well as a lover of good BBQ, so finding great local restaurants tucked away unexpectedly in the middle of a neighborhood while on the road always brings joy. These adventures are what inspired Ryan to open Tchoup's in mid-city Lafayette as he didn't see anyone in Lafayette offering the unique combo of BBQ, a full-service bar and outdoor seating, all tucked away in a 2600-square-foot structure that incorporates many of the homey elements of the original dwelling built decades ago. As a seasoned commercial realtor, Ryan approached his restaurant's location with the same special care he affords all of his retail clients. Tchoup's venue was not chosen randomly; it was selected specifically for its geographic location in the core of Lafayette, the "Mid City," and Ryan hopes this moniker will become a trend with many others following suit. He believes the side roads, what he calls "B" streets, off of Johnston Street have something very special to offer the residential neighborhoods that don't typically have the option of a restaurant near their home. He knew immediately that Tchoup's site was the perfect location for his original concept and did a lot of the carpentry work himself to maintain his vision. When you walk in, you feel instantly at ease; Tchoup's has a lovely feel that evokes memories of family gatherings and festive occasions. Tchoup's opened in June 2020 in the midst of the pandemic. Even with the incredible challenges brought about by the shutdown, Tchoup's has grown into a popular dining destination known for its comfortable ambiance and for being a friendly place to bring your dog. Tchoup's even offers a complete menu for your dog to choose from, including selections such as dog beers (broth-based) and dog treats such as Crunchy Rabbit, Jones' Whole Pig Ear, or Hawaiian Luau Bites! Tchoupitoulas was the inspiration for Tchoup's MidCity Smokehouse. Ryan and his wife, Traci, are both dog lovers and opened Paws & Paw Paw's boarding/daycare/grooming facility Tchoup's offerings are all 'scratch,' meaning everything is freshly prepared from start to finish and of the highest quality. There is no freezer or microwave on site. Food is brought in fresh and cooked fresh. Ryan spoke of how he enjoys doing business with local vendors and fills up a shopping cart of sausage each Tuesday at NuNu's. Ryan credits other local restauranteurs for the great support they have offered him. He partnered with Social Entertainment's Gus Rezende and John Peterson who helped him draft his employee handbook and navigate other start-up issues. The Burnt Bacon Ends are a huge hit and consist of pork belly with a homemade special rub,

3 Quick Lessons on Evaluating Your Writing

I've talked about this a few times here on the podcast before. But, just in case you haven't heard, I left my teaching job at St. Louis Christian College this past summer in order to focus full-time on ghostwriting and running my Daily Writer membership community. Now that SLCC has announced it will be merging with another school at the end of this school year, I have been reflecting a lot on what I learned as a professor during the previous 17 years. One of the most important things I learned as a teacher is the value of assessment. "Assessment" is a broad term for a set of practices designed to help you see if you're reaching your goals. Most people in higher ed honestly hate assessment because it feels like a huge pain. It's time-consuming and often feels like busy work. However, being in this world taught me the value of taking a detailed, honest look at how you can improve. On today's episode, Kent shares three critical things he learned as a college professor that can help us with our writing. *** Are you looking for a community of enthusiastic, generous writers to help you build better habits and grow your writing business? Check out our Daily Writer Community.  Check out our Daily Writing Prompts, which will help you break through creative blocks, brainstorm new ideas, and get back into a state of flow. Writing prompts are a fantastic creative tool for creative writing, journaling, teaching, social media posts, podcasting, and more!
