Emma Summerton Reimagines the Iconic Pirelli Calendar

What's Contemporary Now?

To Emma Summerton, shooting the 2023 Pirelli Calendar was a dream—one that was years in the making. Entitled "Love Letters to the Muse," the 49th edition of the calendar is steeped in magical realism, with portraits going beyond aesthetical beauty to acknowledge women's strengths, talents, and sensibilities. The sought-after Australian-born photographer embraces freedom and constraints, and her work often relays this message, yielding a powerful, unique expression. As a visual artist, Emma meanders between making art awash with a distinctive vision and working as a fashion photographer with a sharp eye and a bold, dramatic style. In her much-lauded career, she's learned to overcome obstacles and keep projects moving forward in any scenario. Her mantra when it comes to the unexpected is "Have fun. Don't freak out." Adopting—and shockingly welcoming—chaos can be unexpectedly rewarding. As she recalls, what seemed as challenging and disastrous shoots, often turned out to be uncannily sublime. Episode Highlights: “Love Letters to the Muse” is the culmination of Emma's decades-long dream to imagine a unique Pirelli Calendar edition. The seven muses represented actual artists—rather than women who had inspired artists. Art or Fashion? Emma happily discovered that the two could coexist and complement each other. Emma plays with reality, transforming it with the camera, light, and composition. Emma got her first break as an assistant to a technically brilliant photographer, who gave her an education in both fashion and photography. Emma developed her voice and style through self-portraiture, which was also her entry into commercial practice. Emma revels in the uncontrolled element of throwing a creative party when doing her art versus marshaling disciplined results for industry clients. Expectations and judgment are ever present, the stress of which Emma manages by trusting her best instincts and staying in the moment. Emma reminds us that imposter syndrome is real, but usually, it's less about others doubting us than us doubting ourselves. Technical skill helps compensate when plans go awry. Ultimately it's about being agile and letting things land as they may, and then just getting on with it. Every artist interested in both personal and professional work must find a balance they can comfortably hold in daily practice. There's no one recipe. Instagram, avatars, and the gaze of social media do not compel Emma—there is “nothing more fun than doing huge, big prints of pictures and having someone put them on a wall or make a book.”

This internationally renowned fashion model has teamed up with Women’s Running Magazine to found Project Start, a collaborative effort to encourage and inspire women to begin their own running journey. She has also launched a size inclusive clothing line for women, Day-Won. While she is termed a “plus -size” model, Huffine is at the helm of models pushing to expand boundaries for curvy models and to eliminate the label “plus” from the fashion vernacular. Candice is a runner and ran the 2017 NYC Marathon. Today’s Guest Candice Huffine is an internationally renowned fashion model. She became the first plus-size woman to be featured in the Pirelli Calendar, a UK Glamour trade calendar. Her A-list work includes being featured in publications such as CR Fashion Book, Italian Vogue (cover), Vogue, W, V Magazine, i-D and Glamour. She has also recently launched a clothing line for the full size range of active women called Day/Won. What you will learn about: How she is living the dream she had as a little girl, despite the fact that she doesn’t have the typical model body type/size. How being slotted into a role as a plus-model, at age 15, allowed her to grow into being a woman with all the curves of a normal woman, and being positive with her body as it is. It was the impetus to grow into a role as a spokesperson for body acceptance. How the body positivity acceptance move is allowing people to feel they are represented. And how it is becoming more acceptable to let our bodies settle where they are meant to be rather than endlessly trying to lose weight to fit into some pre-conceived mold. How she started running in 2015 when her husband dared her to do a half marathon as a part of their annual discussion of their goals for the next year. She first viewed it as just an impossible and unfair dare, but he was so passionate about it she stopped and listened to his reasons. She was inspired by the positive changes in his life when he first took up running, so something in the dare caught her interest. Her first half marathon (NYC half in 2016) was such a learning experience, as she had never trained more than 8 miles and didn’t know what at all to expect. So she psyched herself completely out. But she then used it as a learning experience to move forward. She learned that not only is she susceptible to a dare, but how competitive she could be with herself. It also taught her how important it was to take time for herself to do things that balance you out, and running has been an outlet for that. It has given her time to be meditative and thoughtful. How she found that the running clothing that was available was so uncomfortable and she spent more time adjusting clothing that just didn’t fit her body properly so she spent a bunch of time tugging at things. She decided to found her own brand, Day/Won, launched in the fall of 2017, that made athletic clothing that really fits a woman’s curves and was inclusive across the entire range of sizes. How she used her own brand to stand for causes she felt were important. Inclusivity, sustainability, etc. From giving back to charities, supporting the LGBT community, using recycled materials, making things in the US, digital printing to avoid water waste, and making things to order to save on waste.   Inspirational Quotes: There is always someone listening, being self-deprecating can influence someone and you won’t even realize it. We have to break the cycle of the negative things we say to ourselves. If you commit yourself to a goal, other things you want in your life will fall into place. You have to know it is going to be a slow process but suddenly you start to see the progress you have made and how you have achieved the short term goals that make you proud of what you can accomplish. Run because of how it makes you feel, not how it makes you look. So many women of all sizes are out there doing incredible things, it was time we started dressing them. You stand at the sidelines of a race and see people of all ages, shapes, etc. and it is so inspiring. No one should feel on the outside, you should not have to change to fit in. Explaining and apologizing for our bodies is exhausting and frankly has nothing to do with the bigger picture. It’s Sweet November, folks! So, best to enjoy this episode with some garma-garam aadrak-wali chai. We start off with the 10th annual Queer Pride march that just happened in New Delhi. 2017 is really turning out to be the year all our favourite celebrities let us down. Remember when we hated 2016 for killing all the famous people we loved? Ronan Farrow's New Yorker article has had a butterfly effect - reports are coming in of white men in power in business being called out for their behavior towards women, or for not doing enough. And while Hollywood is a festering puss, Bollywood is a septic tank when it comes to the toxic work environment women have to put up with. Priyanka Chopra’s mom talks of the sleazy directors her daughter had to put up with. Pappu & Sweety review the movies we watched – Mother! (ugh), Ingrid Goes West and the trailer for Basmati Blues (Hollywood, can we please stop with the fake Indian accents? It’s 2017 for God sakes!). Black excellence is having its moment now – we’re talking the new 2018 Pirelli Calendar. Also Chadwick Boseman makes a point on his deliberate non-European accent as Black Panther in the movie we are breathlessly waiting for. Finally, we have a Show the Bhindi (Show the Ladyfinger) Award to give – our very last one for 2017. Sweety tells us why P*ssy Riot is the deserving recipient for this week’s award. --- Sound Clips from Pyaar Mein Twist (2005)and DIllagi(1999) -- // Starring: • Sweety & Pappu // See what’s next on Chuski Pop: • ChuskiPop.com // Buy Art Prints - ChuskiPop.com/Shop // Listen To Us: • SoundCloud - @chuskipop • iTunes - itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/chusk…d1021452101?mt=2 • Stitcher - www.stitcher.com/podcast/chuski-pop • GooglePlay - play.google.com/music/m/Itfvq2wpw…inei?t=Chuski_Pop • Youtube - www.youtube.com/channel/UCVXt7nc3pu2e9WJf6jcKMjg // Follow Us: • Twitter.com/ChuskiPop • Instagram ► instagram.com/chuskipop • Soundcloud ► @chuskipop
