Our guest today is rising pop star Cil. The Colorado-born, LA-based singer and songwriter makes hypnotic R&B-infused pop that's as emotionally raw as it is sonically slick—and she's quickly becoming one of the most exciting new voices in the genre. With co-signs from the likes of Stevie Nicks and praise from Billboard and V Magazine, she's already made waves with singles like “Bloodsucker” and “One More Shot.” Today, Cil releases her new EP don't hold me accountable—a bold, emotionally charged collection that showcases her signature edge and refusal to play by the rules. While we were in Sydney, we sat down with her to talk about the making of the EP, how tuning out external expectations helped shape its sound, and how '90s R&B left its imprint on her music. We also dive into her early songwriting journey, the story behind “Pretty Years,” and introduce her to the very Aussie concept of a shoey.Cil: Instagram / Spotify Find more information about Cil hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. Brandi Carlile is an eleven-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, producer, #1 New York Times Bestselling author and activist – one of music's most respected voices. Aside from the production of her own work, Carlile has been increasingly in-demand as a record producer – helming albums by Tanya Tucker, Lucius, The Secret Sisters, Brandy Clark, and Tish Melton. Tanya Tucker's 2019 album While I'm Livin', co-produced by Carlile with Shooter Jennings, won the GRAMMY for Best Country Album. Last year saw her production talents excel with new album projects from Brandy Clark and Joni Mitchell – both of which took home wins at this year's GRAMMY Awards – as well as her cover of “Home” for the last season of Ted Lasso and her version of “Closer To Fine” with wife Catherine Carlile for Barbie The Album (Best Weekend Ever Edition). Carlile has collaborated closely with Joni Mitchell, Elton John, The Highwomen, Soundgarden, Alicia Keys, Marcus Mumford, Dolly Parton and more. When not on the road, she spends time in her home studio in rural Washington state where she and Catherine raise their two daughters, Evangeline and Elijah. Tish Melton: 18-year-old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who wears her incredibly perceptive heart on her sleeve. “As a songwriter, I've realized you can just tell stories,” she says. “They don't have to be big, dramatic moments. Personally, I learned how to write songs by simply sharing my journey and feeling how I naturally do.” For her debut EP When We're Older, she has teamed up with eleven-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Brandi Carlile, who is a mentor to Melton and joins as producer. Their musical chemistry is undeniable, rooted in mutual respect, shared taste, and an appreciation for good songwriting and musical catharsis. Inspired by the clear-eyed storytelling and indie rock influences of Taylor Swift and boygenius, Melton chronicles teenage relationships – from the lonely pain of first love, unrequited love, friend crushes, joyous friendships, and the pain, fear and excitement of becoming an adult. She tells these stories as she's living them, with a sharp eye for detail and lyricism that brings them to life. Her work has received praise from Variety, V Magazine, FLOOD, and Magnet Magazine. When We're Older is a bold and generous opening statement from a newcomer who is destined to share her stories, and it's available to stream or download now. We had the pleasure of interviewing GXTP over Zoom video!GXTP — comprised of multi-platinum and GRAMMY nominated producers Jason Paul and Sasha Sirota, along with Triple Sixx — who have released their debut album Smoke & Mirrors! The collection of catchy hooks and heavy beats was conceptualized during the pandemic and allows the group of creatives to tap into a genre they had not previously explored. On Smoke & Mirrors, GXTP hone in on their motto as “the greatest f*cking rock band of all time,” spotlighting various rock elements with the perfect amount of comedic relief. The project — led by multi-platinum and GRAMMY nominated producers Jason Paul and Sasha Sirota, along with Triple Sixx — provided the group of creatives an opportunity to tap into the rock world in a way they had not yet explored. The result is an anthemic collection of catchy hooks and heavy beats including “Lust & Purity” and explosive track “Contraband” featuring the legendary Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe which was praised as a “rock and roll banger” by V Magazine and quickly climbed up the Top 40 Mediabase Active Rock chart. Also on the album is the energetic “Quiet Riot” featuring iconic keyboardist and Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan, debut single “Foresight,” and the adrenaline-fueled “Accusation,” which have been quickly adding to the band's over 7.5 million global streams and media support from the likes of E!, Forbes, Loudwire, Blabbermouth, and Spindle Magazine, among others. The record was produced by the band with all members contributing vocals and Sasha performing guitar, bass, drums, and keys throughout. Smoke & Mirrors features additional production on select tracks from Brent Kolatalo (Kendrick Lamar, Drake) and was mixed by Tom Lord-Alge (Blink-182, The Rolling Stones) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Metallica) at Sterling Sound Studios.Formed to not only provide audiences with unparalleled writing and musicianship, but to be an almost reflection of society unto itself, GXTP was conceptualized during the pandemic when the nation fought and scrambled for supplies and is an abbreviation for what the news and communities placed the most importance on: guns and toilet paper. The project features two powerhouse songwriters and producers who have both previously held top spots on Billboard's R&B Producers charts with Jason being known for having penned and produced some of the biggest hits by Justin Bieber, Maluma, and J Balvin among others while Sasha has worked with the likes of Justin Bieber, Zac Brown Band, and Drake. Applying the same rules and quality standards they hold for their own various projects, GXTP's debut album is yet another masterpiece to add to their growing catalogs. We want to hear from you! Sophie Ward Koren has been writing since she was old enough to hold a pen, and has published two books with a third on the way. She also has a busy blog and Instagram account chronicling her essays, poetry and stories about raising children in Ojai. Her work has been published in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, V Magazine and others. Born and raised in Perth in Western Australia, the oldest of four children, she went on to a successful career in modeling (her sister Gemma Ward is a well-known model as well) before meeting fellow Aussie Isaac Koren (the accomplished vocalist with The Kin and the Koren Brothers), having a son and moving to Ojai. Now they have a newborn and Sophie uses her writing to share her struggles, triumphs and helpful life lessons along the way. We talked about Perth's exotic wildlife (quokka anyone?), creative community, cooking, international fashion modeling, finding a purpose through dark clouds of doubt and fear, Ojai's exceptionalism and much more. We did not talk about Shark Week, Australian Rules Football or Genghis Khan. We had the pleasure of interviewing UMI over Zoom video!R&B singer-songwriter UMI announces her new EP talking to the wind out January 19. She also releases the second track off the project, “why dont we go.”talking to the wind follows UMI's critically acclaimed debut album Forest in the City (2022), which Rolling Stone praised for its expansive “sun-soaked electro R&B” and “moody slow jams.” The new 4-track project sees UMI in a confident new light as she fully embraces love, life, but above all, feeling okay with being lost in the world. Her first independent release, talking to the wind was written during a transitional period. Ultimately, UMI found wisdom and the creative motivation to write the EP through meditation and getting in touch with the elements by literally speaking with the wind.UMI's second offering from the project, “why dont we go,” begins with reverberating vocals before funk-infused guitar and a snapping bass line come into play. It's the perfect backdrop for an upbeat anthem about throwing caution to the wind and falling in love. The accompanying video is a playful celebration of youth and beauty. UMI and her friends are the epitome of carefree as they dance around a sunlit room.“This song is about enjoying your eternal youth, to be playful, to be free, to not think so much about life. Through the lyrics I paint a scene of me falling in love with someone I met for the first time, dancing through the night and forgetting my parents advice. ‘why don't we go' is me inviting myself and the other person to just let go and to live for the sake of living—even if it's just for one night,” UMI says of the single.“why dont we go” channels many of the same themes as UMI's previous single “happy im,” released on August 11, existing in the same sonic universe but paired with a more danceable beat. Upon release, “happy im” was praised by outlets like Billboard and Vibe, which raved “UMI is a whimsical, enchanting dream personified. With her new single, ‘happy im,' she kicks off her 2023 in bliss.” V Magazine said that “the infectiously uplifting track is enough to cheer audiences up instantaneously.” And Numéro Netherlands summed up her trajectory, stating that UMI is “gearing up for a prolific, passionate, and powerful new season.”On November 27, UMI will host two meditation events at Lune Souleil in Downtown Los Angeles. An extension of the meditations she leads before each of her concerts, UMI and attendees will celebrate that evening's beaver moon aka the November full moon. At both the 7 pm PT and 9 pm PT meditations, UMI will lead group breathing and a sound bowl session to infuse the power of the moon into attendees. On December 2, UMI will join Jhené Aiko at Oakland Arena, where she'll perform her new singles from talking to the wind as well as hits from Forest in the City. Coco Jones and Tink will also make special appearances as openers. With only a debut album under her belt, UMI has quietly risen to the forefront of R&B. Beyond tens of millions of streams, Complex hailed her as one of the “20 R&B Artists to Watch in 2023,” noting, “Even if you aren't familiar with the name yet, it's highly probable you've heard her voice. UMI is just getting started and feels poised for greatness.” Beyond plugs from MTV, Vogue and more, Pitchfork said that “her growth is both exciting and compelling.”ABOUT UMI:UMI is a 24-year-old Seattle native pioneering a new sound rooted in neo soul and folk. Her deepest intention is to use her music as a vessel for healing and human connection. Meaning ocean in Japanese, "umi" is a beautiful reflection of her artistry - soothing like a day spent in nature. She flows across melodies and allows herself to dive into the human experience in a way that leaves listeners feeling deeply understood. UMI's Japanese roots as well as her life journeys as a Queer woman can be felt throughout the themes of her songs. The energy of her melodies reflects her personality - deeply caring and inviting. Currently living in Los Angeles, UMI continues to create genre-bending music that captivates and inspires listeners. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing NIKI over Zoom video!Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter, and producer NIKI releases the visual for her track “The Apartment We Won't Share.”Directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the new visual for “The Apartment We Won't Share” compliments the nostalgic track that reflects on what could have been with a past relationship. NIKI is contemplative as she strolls through her apartment alone before picking up her guitar to craft the introspective song. Most recently, NIKI made her NPR Tiny Desk debut where she delivered a carefully crafted & stripped-back performance of a handful of songs from her sophomore album Nicole, before closing with her hit single “Every Summertime."Following her sold-out North American headlining tour last fall, NIKI will be bringing her live show to cities across the globe with her 2023 world tour which will span across North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. The run also includes performances at festivals including Head in the Clouds NYC & LA, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. The full list of dates is below; please visit https://nikizefanya.com/ for more information.Previously, NIKI released the music video for her track “Backburner.” The video is deliberate and intimate, taking viewers into her world as she watches old footage recorded on her camcorder and re-lives fond memories of a past relationship.Last summer, NIKI released her sophomore album Nicole, a project that sees her where she shines, returning to her singer-songwriter roots in a carefully crafted coming-of-age juncture that sees present-day NIKI meet with her teenage self. The album was released to critical acclaim by the likes of NPR, Billboard, Vanity Fair, and V Magazine, who hailed Nicole as “NIKI's piece-de-resistance that kicks off an exceptional new chapter for the burgeoning songstress.” NIKI also released her live album Live at the Wiltern last month, which features live recordings performed at the final show of NIKI's sold-out headlining tour at the Los Angeles venue last October.NIKI has had an impressive career thus far, amassing over 2.1 billion streams worldwide and opening for Taylor Swift on tour when she was just 15. In addition to performing at Coachella and embarking on her headlining North American tour last fall, she has also headlined at 88rising's Head in the Clouds Festival in Los Angeles, New York, Manila, and Jakarta.ABOUT NIKISince breaking through with her 2018 EP Zephyr, NIKI has made a powerful imprint on the pop scene, amassing a devoted global fanbase with over 2.1 billion streams to date and making history as the first Indonesian artist ever to perform at Coachella. But after delivering her critically acclaimed debut album MOONCHILD, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter felt compelled to completely reexamine her artistic process—a move that found her revisiting the vast catalog of unfiltered and indie-folk-leaning songs she'd created in high school. As she returned to the stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting that defined her earliest material, the 23-year-old musician soon arrived at her sophomore album Nicole: a boldly self-possessed body of work written entirely by NIKI, spotlighting her finespun storytelling and warmly expressive vocals more fully than ever before. With the album's first half comprised of new or never-before-heard songs and its latter half featuring her favorite tracks from her widely beloved YouTube channel, NIKI imbues her songs with the kind of lived-in specificity that immediately reconnects the listener with the rush and devastation of their own first love.We want to hear from you! Today on What's My Frame? I'm joined by Poker Face hair department head, Marcel Dagenais. I had the absolute joy of meeting Marcel last year on the set of Rain Johnson's new series Poker Face. In the week leading up to joining the show I was blown away by Marcel and his team's attention to detail and pre planing. It dawned on me so many actors don't know what to expect after the offer email. We spend so much time focusing on getting the job we don't discuss the flood of emails / txts and planing that happens between booking and landing on set. Today Marcel and I discuss just that, how to share helping info with the hair & MUA department heads before arriving in their trailer along with so many more helpful tips. Of course we also dive into Marcel's work in commercials and editorial along with a few favorites stories from set including a wild one from Russian Doll. Jason Crombie is a writer and the Editor in Chief for Monster Children. I've been reading Monster Children for years whether it was for skateboarding, art, music, cars, girls, not porn, travel, design, photography, the list goes on. I have a stack of Monster Children in my USM Haller. No flex. Not porn. In 2003, Jason created the magazine Wooooo that featured Thurston Moore, Mark Gonzales, Zach Galifianakis, James Dean's roommate, and Michelle Williams, among other lesser-known individuals which would probably feature me at some point. Wooooo established Jason as someone able to conduct interviews and cobble sentences together, which resulted in real writing work. Then more work. My favorite part of his bio is: Jason mentions that he was able to quit his job at the dildo factory and begin living the frightening and unpredictable life of a freelance scribe. So that means I no longer work at the dildo factory as well. Jason contributed features and interviews to publications such as ID, Vice, Saturdays, Fantastic Man, V Magazine, and more. Jason also provided creative direction and copy for many brands, including Nike, Adidas, Canon, Vans, Burton, and Budweiser. In 2012, Jason became Editor in Chief of Monster Children magazine. Turns out he has been working on a non-fiction novel since 2017. This is one of the moments where I've known about Jason's work for years but never really mentioned it to anybody because nobody asks. I used to steal Monster Children's at Barnes and Noble but now I can afford them. Not a flex. Not porn. After my blockbuster first guest, I'm thrilled to have sat down for the second episode of A Life Curated. with the worlds greatest fashion artist and Claridge's artist in residence , DAVID DOWNTON.It's often written that David has single handedly revived interest in fashion portraiture bringing the golden age of illustration to the 21st century with his classically elegant, yet highly contemporary images all executed in his distinct sweeping style. In 1996 David got his big break when he was sent to draw the Paris Couture starting with unparalleled access to Valentino and Versace at the Ritz. Since then he hasn't looked back and counts Chanel, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, Fenwick, Harrods, Tiffany and the V & A amongst his clients.David's portraits of the worlds most iconic women include Laura Bailey, Iman, Dita von Teese, Erin O'connor, Gillian Anderson, Catherine Deneuve and Jasmine Guinness and his work routinely appears in the The New York Times, Vogue, V Magazine, Harpers Bazaar and most recently Vanity Fair.In this 55 minute odyssey and recorded from his suite at Claridge's, David and I discuss his inspiration in the early years, how he navigates the personalities in the fashion world, opening that invisible door from a commercial illustrator to the high octane world he now inhabits, tells us the key ingredients of how he made it, the process of a life drawing and if Warhol had Marilyn, Sargeant has Madame X, who is his favourite subject?Put the lead on the dog, whip on that coat or lie back on the sofa, just remember to plug me in and turn up the volume for this fabulous episode.Thank you to DD for being such a brilliant guest and an all around class act.Produced by Martin Lumsden Hosted on Acast. We had the pleasure of interviewing Spencer Brown & Marieme over Zoom video!Spencer Brown launched his own record label, diviine, earlier this year to release whatever music type he wanted, when he wanted, without restrictions. The label's debut double single ‘Forbidden Flow / 18 Min Loop' featured a song that clocked in at, you guessed it, 18 minutes. While the initial release was geared towards the club, Spencer further demonstrates the zeitgeist of diviine with the follow-up up release ‘Stuck/Reflex,' two beautiful songs that feature vocals from Senegalese-American singer-songwriter, Marieme. A favorite of top lifestyle publications including V Magazine and FLAUNT, Marieme's sultry, smooth and soulful touch is at the core of what makes this unique collaboration so special. ‘Stuck' is a flowing, ethereal slice of progressive house while ‘Reflex' is built around a traditional songwriting structure, allowing Marieme to tell her story unaccompanied by beats until the very end. Spencer is an artist who likes to live on the cutting edge of dance music without being boxed into any genre. Whether it be techno, deep house, progressive house, or a whopping 18-minute stormer, Spencer creates what he wants, when he wants, for the love of music. Throughout his career, he's explored the label system, never bound to any organization, but choosing world-class imprints such as Anjunadeep, Last Night on Earth, Factory93, and mau5trap to release his diverse work. It's now time for Spencer to take the next step in his career and launch his own label...a place for dance music without any boundaries…this is diviine. Whether it's her high-fashion yet effortlessly cool aesthetic, her irresistible blend of vintage pop and lush contemporary beats, or the raw honesty that comes through her lyricism, one thing is certain - there is a rarity about an artist such as RALPH. With an emphasis on narrative songwriting and genre-bending musical style (with a background in vocal jazz and folk music), RALPH has created a special role for herself within the contemporary music scene; a sound that is catchy but cool, sexy but smart, edgy but sophisticated. She's developed a soundscape that is uniquely her own, but what truly makes RALPH's songs special is that they are ferociously honest and relatable. This finesse sent her hit track “Gravity” up the radio charts into the Top 20, followed by a JUNO award nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. Starting with little more than talent and a vision, over the past five years RALPH has built an incredible following in the USA, Canada and Europe. She's joined the likes of Ria Mae, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Scott Helman on three cross-Canada tours, and has drawn crowds south of the border for a North American tour with US band JOAN. Earning over 35 millions streams across platforms and seeing her music featured across television networks such as E!, HBO, Freeform, CBC, and VICE, she has earned praise from a wealth of tastemaker press such as The FADER, Billboard, Paper, Paste, NYLON, V Magazine, Mother Jones, Interview Magazine, Elle Canada, Hollywood Reporter, Teen Vogue, and MTV News. She has also seen her face featured twice on the Dundas Square Amazon and Spotify billboards, and was the guest vocal coach on two episodes of Canada's Drag Race. The scope of RALPH's talent reaches far beyond her sonance; her aesthetic eye has served in the consistency of her photography and the artful approach to her music videos as she continues to grow not only as a pop-icon, but a style purveyor. Whether it's to catch the next look she'll be serving, or the next bop she'll be dropping, all eyes are on RALPH. Ralph's newest EP Gradience was just released July 2021, and her single ‘Tommy' is already being played on radios across Canada. She has a Canada headline tour booked for November 2021 and will be continuing her tour in January, visiting select cities in the USA. New York Times bestselling author Robert Venditti broke into comics the old-fashioned way—by starting out in the mailroom. He began working for publisher Top Shelf Productions in 2002, and within a few months sold them the script for The Surrogates, his first comic book series. The story was later adapted into a feature film starring Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames. Venditti went on to write the original graphic novel The Homeland Directive, as well as the graphic novel adaptations of Rick Riordan's bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels. In 2012, he helped relaunch Valiant Entertainment's comic book universe by writing their flagship title, X-O Manowar. Venditti currently writes GREEN LANTERN for DC Comics. He lives in Atlanta. Bridget Malcolm is an international fashion model whose career has spanned from campaigns with Ralph Lauren to Maybelline to V Magazine to Victoria's Secret and Harper's Bazaar. Listen to Dr. Allie in conversation with Bridget Malcolm as they speak on Recovery, Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and a Renewed Perspective on her mental health. Bridget Malcolm grew up in South Fremantle, a little beach town just south of Perth, spending most of her days at the beach and ballet class. She was surrounded by music—her dad plays flamenco guitar and her mother the piano – so it was little surprise when on a whim she took up the oboe and fell in love with it. After just six months, she was performing with the local university's octet and toured Europe with her high school orchestra. At age 14, she was scouted by her first modeling agency, Vivien's, “but we had to wait a year or so for me to outgrow my terrible haircut, braces, and general awkwardness.” Her first job was for Harper's Bazaar Australia, with photographer Nicole Bentley, the woman she credits with teaching her how to model. At 16, she was signed to an international agency, and before she knew it, was juggling high school and modeling work. Upon graduation, she was accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and WAAPA, but instead decided to move to New York City to pursue modeling fulltime. Throughout her modeling career Bridget suffered from a wide variety of mental health struggles, including an eating disorder and anxiety, which interfered with her ability to work. She began blogging about her experiences and was humbled by the level of connectivity and overwhelming positive reaction from people around the world. She realized that even though the pressures she faced – working in an image-based industry where the inside often gets ignored – were specific to the modeling and fashion industry, the resulting mental health issues were universal. Bridget currently lives in New York City. She continues to model and advocate for mental health in the fashion industry and has formed a peer support group for models, while also focusing on “post-modelism” life including working towards a bachelor's degree with the intention to study public health and writing her memoir. Bridget is also a classically trained oboist and musician. “My motto is progress over perfection” – Bridget Malcolm This episode was recorded in August of 2019.
