At 10 a.m. on the morning of February 2nd, 2008, the Lane Bryant store and Tinley Park, Illinois opened for the day. Just minutes later, a man entered the store posing as a delivery person. He eventually pulled out a gun and took the store manager, a part time employee, and four customers hostage. The six women were forced into a back room, where they were bound with duct tape and shot, execution style. The store manager and the four customers were killed instantly, but the part time employee survived. She had moved just as the gunman fired, and although she was shot in the neck, she lived to give police a detailed description of the killer. Despite her account and an extensive investigation, the gunman has never been identified. It's been over 16 years since Rhoda McFarland, Jennifer Bishop, Carrie Chiuso Hudek, Connie Woolfolk and Sarah Szafranski were murdered, and investigators are still searching for the person responsible. On the morning of February 2nd, 2008, five women were murdered inside the Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park, Illinois. The gunman entered the store at 10:08 a.m. posing as a delivery person, and by 10:46 a.m. he had executed five victims. Surveillance footage captured two vehicles outside the store, a dark colored SUV and a smaller sedan, both leaving moments after the murders. The gunman was described as a husky, medium to dark complected black man, approximately 6ft - 6ft two inches tall, with a receding hairline and braided hair. He was wearing black jeans with rhinestones on the back pocket and a charcoal gray knit cap. His identity remains unknown. February 2, 2008. Tinley Park, Illinois. Police are summoned to a Lane Bryant clothing store at the Brookside Marketplace Shopping Center and discover that five victims have been fatally shot in the back room: the 42-year old store manager Rhoda McFarland, and four customers, 37-year old Connie Wolfolk, 34-year old Jennifer Bishop, 33-year old Carrie Hudek Chiuso, and 22-year old Sarah Szafranski. Even though another store employee was wounded with a bullet which grazed her neck, she winds up surviving and tells police that the shooting was committed by a black male. While the crime is suspected to be a robbery gone wrong, investigators are unable to find or identify the perpetrator or make much sense of his actions. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the Lane Bryant Shooting, a baffling crime involving five murdered victims which has somehow managed to remain unsolved for 16 years. Plus-size fashion has come a long way in the 119 years since Lane Bryant opened its doors in 1904, but it still has a long way to go. Many people still struggle to access the same clothing options as straight-size people. Reset learns more from fashion blogger Natalie Craig and journalist Gianluca Russo, author of The Power of Plus. Then we'll hear from Jovana Savic, founder of Thick Mall, a local vintage market offering more options to plus-size customers and local writer Megan Kirby who covered Thick Mall for the New York Times.
In this episode, Elle talks about her experiences learning how to dress herself again after presenting as a man for 30+ years. For trans feminine people in particular, clothing is a really big deal as we go through transition. One of the consequences of rigid American masculinity is a severe restriction in fashion creativity within the norm. For Elle, and for many trans people who present as women, getting to wear a wardrobe that feels more true, is one of the sun parts of going through this process. Elle talks in this episode about the things she has learned about how to dress her self, and where she shops as a woman who is tall and thick. Some of her favorite stores include: Asos, Old Navy, Nordstrom Rack, Target, Lane Bryant, H&M, Amazon / Zappos. Chat with her at TWATpodcasting@gmail.com

Hunter McGrady is such a dreamboat. This conversation was expansive, honest, so funny… and truly nothing was off limits. We talked about the challenges and shame that can come with finding a wedding or bridesmaids dress for a curvy figure. We talked about 2020, during which Hunter not only welcomed her first child but was a time when her life came to a crashing halt with the unexpected loss of her younger brother. She shares how she straddled the most devastating and crippling grief with the excitement and joy of her new baby boy. Hunter and I both come from blended, modern families and we talked about both having a stepmom and BEING one, as Hunter became a stepmom in her early twenties. We even covered finding gray hair, death doulas, and what bitches girls are in high school (and how much we still blame the moms who bred that horrible species of female). Growing up in Los Angeles as an aspiring model, Hunter McGrady is breaking down cultural beauty barriers as the first plus size woman to appear on the cover of The Knot. She's the curviest model to appear in ‘Sports Illustrated' and was named their 2018 rookie of the year. Hunter was one of the first curve models to walk NYFW runways in September 2017, and has worked with top brands such as Olay, Revlon, Nordstrom, and Lane Bryant. Hunter is a dedicated advocate for body positivity and mental health, and works closely with the JED foundation for suicide prevention.
