We could think of a better killer to bridge the gap between Summer of Slaughter to Spooky Season than Ed Gein, AKA The Butcher of Plainfield or The Plainfield Ghoul. Welcome to the 2nd Annual Halloween Spooktacular! Last year, you heard the gruesome tale of Ed Gein, the Plainfield Ghoul. He made lampshades out of human skin and hung his victims up like deer. If you thought that was shocking, then wait till you get a load of this year's creeps. We're going to back to Wisconsin for, not one, but two horrifyingly true stories. First up is Gerald Turner, The Halloween Killer (who's unfortunately from co-host Alejandro's hometown of Fond du Lac). His crime was so heinous that it changed trick-or-treating forever. Next, we devour the case of Jeffrey Dahmer, The Milwaukee Cannibal, one of the most notorious serial killers of all time. A new media spotlight shines on him and his disgusting crimes because of the popularity of the Netflix series based on his life. But if you think you've heard it all, think again. On November 16, 1957 hardware store owner Bernice Worden went missing after an everyday interaction with a not-so-everyday man, named Ed Gein. Ed Gein had a fascination with his late mother due to the abuse he suffered as a child, and this fascination would lead him to taking the body parts of women who apparently looked like her, in order to fashion a flesh suit Gein could wear. To this extent he would go to the graves of women and exhume their parts, with, in his opinion, the "less-useful" parts becoming furniture in his house, such as bowls, chairs, soap containers, etc. What he would do to her, and Mary Hogan, another missing woman, were some of the most graphic and heinous acts known to man–that would later go on to inspire several famous horror movies.

Born on August 27, 1906 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin to parents George and Augusta Gein (who were both natives of Wisconsin); Edward Theodore Gein's gruesome and unbelievable crimes were the inspiration for many books and horror films. Known as the “Butcher of Plainfield” and “The Plainfield Ghoul”, Gein was known for skinning his victims, robbing graves to obtain body parts, and then crafting household and clothing items out of said body parts. Instead of hitting up the local hobby shop for supplies, Gein opted for a more “scavenger hunt” style of collecting necessary items via local graveyards. Shopping is overrated anyway. Why pay for something, if you can make it yourself…right? Not like the deceased needed their skin…or skulls anymore, right? Sure does seem like this was Gein's mindset. But I'm jumping ahead. So, let's go back to the beginning and see if we can determine what made him commit these heinous acts, before his death on July 26, 1984.------For this episode, I stuck to the dates and the facts that we knew about him/his criminal life. In part 2, We will delve more into the myths about Gein as well as our thoughts regarding Ed's crimes, behavior, and some additional facts about the trial itself. So, join us tomorrow for Part 2 - where Brittany (from Where the Weird Things Are Podcast and I will do a deep dive discussion about the case, the people involved, our thoughts regarding nature vs nurture, and much more. Ed was an odd fellow, who turned into a murderer who robbed graves in hopes of creating a "woman suit" that resembled his dead mother. Edward Theodore Gein, aka The Butcher of Plainfield and as the Plainfield Ghoul, was an American murderer and body snatcher. Gein tormented his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin and gathered mass attention in 1957 after authorities discovered that he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards… as well as numerous body parts. Ed Gein also confessed to murdering two women. But why did Ed Gein exhume corpses and collect very disturbing paraphernalia? There are numerous reasons we think played a role in the formation of the Plainfield Ghoul. A traumatic childhood, a strict Lutheran mother, and an unhealthy obsession with his mother were the wrongful influences behind Ed Gein. Join us on this episode, as we discuss the life and crimes of Ed Gein.
